Anurag Thakur has been unanimously elected the BCCI president at the board’s special general meeting in Mumbai on Sunday. Thakur, 41, and formerly the BCCI secretary, was the only nominee for the post; he will serve as president until September 2017. He will also represent the BCCI on the ICC executive board and the Asian Cricket Council.Thakur is the 34th president of the BCCI and after taking office he nominated Ajay Shirke, the Maharashtra Cricket Association president, as his successor as secretary. Shirke will represent the BCCI at the chief executives committee meetings of the ICC. He had previously served as BCCI treasurer, resigning the post in 2013 because he was unhappy with the board’s response to the IPL corruption scandal.Thakur succeeded Shashank Manohar, who had stepped down as president a week ago so that he would be eligible to be elected the ICC’s first independent chairman. He had held the post of BCCI secretary during Manohar’s tenure and was seen to be the automatic choice to replace Manohar, given the support he gained since he was appointed joint secretary in September 2011.As per the BCCI constitution, its president is elected by a rotational system where each of the five zones is given the chance to put forward candidates at the special general meeting. It was the East zone’s turn and Thakur was formally endorsed by all its six units – Cricket Association of Bengal, National Cricket Club, Odisha Cricket Association, Tripura Cricket Association, Assam Cricket Association and Jharkhand Cricket Association.Thakur, one of the youngest BCCI presidents, is also a politician and is the BJP member of parliament from Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district. The son of the two-time former Himachal Pradesh chief minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal, Thakur is also the head of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association.

Arsenal: Arteta Could Now Lose "Revelation" This Summer

Arsenal and sporting director Edu by extension could let midfield star Granit Xhaka leave if they find a suitable replacement, according to reports.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The north Londoners are still fighting for their first Premier League title in nearly 20 years as manager Mikel Arteta seeks to end his side's long wait for domestic glory.

They have it all to do, though, as close rivals Man City have stolen a march on Arsenal and remain in the driving seat – possessing both a one-point advantage and game in hand.

Like Real Madrid proven on Tuesday evening, the Blues are not unstoppable, which could give Arteta some hope as Arsenal look to take City all the way to the wire.

Off the pitch, Edu and Arsenal are working on additions for next season to maintain Arsenal's place among England's elite, with central midfield reinforcements thought to be taking priority.

emile-smith-rowe-arsenal-opinion-granit-xhaka-mikel-arteta-premier-league

The likes of West Ham star Declan Rice, who the Gunners are in behind-scenes talks with, are top of their transfer agenda for the summer.

In terms of who could depart the Emirates Stadium, a name up for nomination is Xhaka, who has been a fixture in Arteta's starting eleven this season.

German news outlet Sport 1 now claim that Arsenal and Edu are "not averse" to selling the 30-year-old if they find a suitable successor – with Xhaka's deal set to expire in 2024.

The midfield general already has a suitor as well, with Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen apparently working on a deal to sign him.

Alonso is said to have a close relationship with Arteta as the pair were raised together in the Spanish Basque country. They were also former teammates and remain great friends.

Should Arsenal sell Xhaka?

Arsenal have the option to extend his stay by a further year and we believe Xhaka could still have a part to play under Arteta.

His years of top flight experience at Arsenal could make an invaluable member of the dressing room, especially if Arteta has to re-challenge for the title from scratch next season.

Xhaka has played nearly every league game bar one this campaign, registering 12 goal contributions in the process, with Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn calling him a "revelation".

Arteta himself has also called Xhaka a "really important" player this season and it is certainly possible that he could play yet another crucial role next campaign.

Predicted Celtic XI, Team & Injury News Vs Rangers

Celtic return to action in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon as they travel away from home to face Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox as confirmed champions.

The Hoops are 13 points clear of their rivals in the table and have the chance to extend the gap to a staggering 16 points with three matches left to play.

Ange Postecoglou's side secured the league title last week with a 2-0 win against Hearts and could use these last four games to rotate his side with a view to making decisions on what he wants to do with the squad in the summer transfer window.

How will Celtic line up against Rangers?

The Australian head coach could make three changes to the XI that started against Hearts last time out, with one in midfield and two in attack.

However, the defence could remain the same with Joe Hart between the sticks and a back four of; Anthony Ralston, Carl Starfelt, Yuki Kobayashi, and Greg Taylor.

Cameron Carter-Vickers has been ruled out for the remainder of this season with a knee injury and this has opened the door for January signing Kobayashi to showcase his quality on a regular basis.

Celtic midfielder Aaron Mooy.

In midfield, Aaron Mooy could be brought in to replace Matt O'Riley next to Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate. The 32-year-old has registered four goals and ten assists in 13 Premiership starts this season and the boss could give him an opportunity to add to his tallies against the Light Blues this afternoon.

On the wing, Daizen Maeda could make way for Liel Abada.

The Japan international has one goal in his last seven appearances and the latter has two goals and one assist in the same time, despite only starting once, which could lead to the £15k-per-week "revelation" – as he was dubbed by Alan Hutton – taking the 25-year-old's place this afternoon.

Finally, Kyogo Furuhashi came off with a knock against Hearts and Postecoglou could rest the club's star striker by offering Oh Hyeon-gyu a rare start after his goal off the bench last time out.

Oh has only started once of his 12 Premiership appearances and managed to plunder three goals for the club since arriving on a permanent deal in January and could be given a huge chance to impress whilst leading the line against Rangers today with Abada and Jota either side of him.

Predicted Celtic XI (4-3-3): Hart; Ralston, Starfelt, Kobayashi, Taylor; Hatate, McGregor, Mooy; Abada, Oh, Jota.

Ingram maintains Glamorgan's upward curve

Colin Ingram blasted 64 off 30 balls as Glamorgan continued their impressive start to the NatWest T20 Blast with a six-wicket win over Gloucestershire at Bristol. The experienced South African hammered five sixes and four fours as his side comfortably chased down a target of 169 with seven balls to spare. After rain delayed the start until 7pm, Gloucestershire posted 168 for 8, Ian Cockbain and Kieran Noema-Barnett both scoring 37.Dale Steyn was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers with 2 for 21 from his four overs, while Graham Wagg claimed 2 for 28.It didn’t look enough on a good pitch with a fast outfield. Ingram was well supported by Anuerin Donald as Glamorgan made it three wins from four group games.Gloucestershire’s innings got off to a poor start as they lost their two best T20 batsmen Michael Klinger and Hamish Marshall in less than three overs.Klinger had made only five when loosely driving a catch to extra cover off Timm van der Gugten and it was 11 for 2 when Marshall, on 3, played an equally poor shot to be be caught at mid-off, Steyn the successful bowler. It was 30 for 3 when Chris Dent lofted Wagg to long-on where van der Gugten took a good catch in the final Powerplay over.Cockbain launched a counter-attack, hitting two sixes off Meschede before the bowler took revenge by having him caught behind. By that time Benny Howell had gone too and at 79 for 5, the hosts were in a hole.Noema-Barnett played a powerful cameo, hitting sixes off Dean Cosker and van der Gugten in making his runs off 22 balls and Jack Taylor steered Gloucestershire towards a respectable total, helped by an enormous scooped six by Gareth Roderick off Steyn.Andrew Tye’s two sixes in the final over gave the home side hope, but proved in vain.Jacques Rudolph and David Lloyd gave the visitors a solid start with a stand of 29 before Tye struck with the last ball of his first over, the fifth of the innings, Lloyd getting a thick edge off a quicker ball to Liam Norwell at third man.Ingram picked up two sixes over deep backward square in the same Norwell over as Glamorgan moved to 45 for one at the end of the powerplay. The next over from Howell saw Rudolph bowled for 16. But Ingram pulled a Noema-Barnett full-toss for his third six and at the halfway stage in their innings Glamorgan were well placed at 86 for 2.Tye, who had bowled his first two overs for ten runs, was ordered out of the Gloucestershire attack after being no-balled twice for high full-tosses in the 15th over.It was a blow the hosts could not afford. Ingram had reached a 24-ball half-century and by the time he fell to Chris Dent, who had replaced Tye, after hitting the left-arm spinner’s first two balls for six, only 29 were needed from 32 balls.Chris Cooke fell for 16, but Donald was still there at the end, having hit four fours and a six in his 39-ball innings.

England in front as bowlers hold sway

Nearly 10 years have slipped by while Alastair Cook has been a permanent fixture at the top of England’s order in home Tests. In his temporary absence at Lord’s because of a bruised knee, England had an unnerving vision of the future

The Report by David Hopps11-Jun-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:34

WATCH – Highlights of the third day’s play

Nearly 10 years have slipped by while Alastair Cook has been a permanent fixture at the top of England’s order in home Tests. His absence at Lord’s was only temporary, the result of a hospital scan on a bruised knee, but in that time England had an unnerving vision of the future as Sri Lanka made them sweat in the final Investec Test.Four down by the close of the third day, England still held a healthy lead of 237, with six wickets – Cook included – and remain overwhelming favourites to win but shorn of his presence for the first time on these shores since Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Strauss opened against Pakistan at The Oval in 2006, their shortcomings were stripped bare. There was another failure for Nick Compton, moved up from No. 3 to fill an emergency opener’s role, that will surely end the second phase of his Test career, his footwork again leaden as Shaminda Eranga brought one down the slope to have him caught at the wicket. There was a first-ball duck, too, for James Vince, who has failed to secure a maiden Test half-century in this series, and who naively left a delivery from Nuwan Pradeep which skipped back down the hill to hit his off stump. So far he has been a player of style rather than substance.”No thoughts of retirement for a while yet” will be England’s exhortation to Cook, a CBE freshly to his name in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. With Pakistan lying in wait later this summer, there will be relief that the x-ray – the result of a blow from Kusal Perera while fielding at silly point – revealed nothing sinister.Pradeep’s zestful display brought him three wickets in all, a shooter accounting for Joe Root, who risked ricking his back on his return to the pavilion as he turned round frequently to watch his demise on the big screen, and a hack across the line by Jonny Bairstow that was a throwback to earlier times. Alex Hales, 41 not out, stood firm but Pradeep would have removed him as well, on 19, if Dimuth Karunaratne had clung to a low chance to his left at second slip and again on 39, shortly before the close, when he glanced Pradeep down the leg side only for Dinesh Chandimal to grass the chance.A Lord’s Test Saturday had swung loyally towards England in the morning, as a place of such ingrained traditions must presumably feel obliged to do when they are Trooping the Colour a few miles down the road for the Queen’s 90th birthday.Sri Lanka’s visions at start of play of conceding more than 400 in the first innings and then winning the Test, as they did at The Oval in their Muttiah Muralitharan-inspired 1998 victory, would have been encouraged by reaching the close on the second day 162 runs to the good and Karunaratne the only casualty. But by lunch, they were obliterated: six down and still trailing by 198, Kusal Mendis, Kaushal Silva and Angelo Mathews all dispatched in the first 7.3 overs as England’s pace attack regained the initiative.Chris Woakes had been the most insistent of England’s attack on the previous evening and that was enough for him to start the day alongside Stuart Broad. There was enough in the air to encourage the bowlers that it would be a more even contest and they pounded a good length – a fuller length than on the previous day – from the outset.Woakes’ first ball of the previous day had brought about the Bairstow howler – and more critical examination of his wicketkeeping role. This time Woakes enjoyed immediate success, winning an lbw as he rammed a delivery down the slope into Mendis’ pads.Silva failed to add to his overnight 79, his edge to Bairstow in Broad’s third over of the morning extending a remarkable record in which he has been caught at the wicket in all nine of his Test innings in England. Repetition around off stump has rarely been more obviously rewarded.England’s energy also extended to Bairstow. When Mathews thick-edged Broad to third man, Hales and Root, giving chase, were shocked to find a red-headed retriever tearing past them and diving full-length in wicketkeeping pads to save the boundary. Such chases are part of Bairstow’s make-up and his pleasure in mildly embarrassing two of his team-mates was evident.Mathews’ pugnacity was needed to restore Sri Lanka’s ambition, but he was defeated by extra bounce from Woakes, going wide on the crease, and Root, quite close at second slip, held a good catch. It was a delivery that encapsulated Woakes’ improvement, a bowler of good habits and decent action now capable of something a little more unsettling.Chandimal was equally uncertain, beginning with an inside-edged four against Woakes and almost scooped up at second slip by Root when Anderson made an unaccustomed late arrival into the attack. It was not long before Chandimal fell, too, lbw to a fullish delivery from Steven Finn and unsuccessfully reviewing in the hope that the ball might have faded down the slope past leg stump. Finn also looked more eager than on the previous day and the wicket of Lahiru Thirimanne completed a satisfying England morning, a poor uppish-drive which gave Root another catch.Root, England’s stand-in captain, endured a merry stand of 71 in 17 overs, against old ball and new, by Sri Lanka’s seventh-wicket pair of Perera and Rangana Herath. Perera, back in the Sri Lanka side after overturning drugs allegations, produced some typically emphatic blows and Herath offered good support, chancing his arm and indulging in some puffed-out cheeks fist-pumping with his partner with an air of mild relief.Root’s star fast bowlers were also having a wild mustang moment. Root wisely resisted a headstron g appeal from Broad to review a refused lbw appeal against Herath, and then was spoken to by the umpires regarding Anderson, who indulged in some behind-the-hands muttering at slip (always a sign of trouble afoot).Around the time Cook collected his diagnosis, Sri Lanka’s lower order crumbled. Broad caused Herath to chop on, Perera was caught behind off a bottom edge, attempting to pull, Suranga Lakmal edged Anderson low to second slip, and Woakes, who had followed his highest Test score with a stand-out bowling display, took his third wicket when Eranga edged the first ball of his spell to Vince at third slip. When Anderson dismissed Perera the Anderson-Broad new-ball combination became the most prolific opening partnership in history, overhauling the 493 collected by Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis and ahead of other notables on the list: Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie, and Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock. Those wickets have come at five-runs more per wicket – roughly 26 to 21 – but they are all in the book, Anderson and Broad both stand in the top three in the ICC Test bowling rankings and how England will miss them when they are gone. Of Cook, the same was evidently true.

"Outstanding" Villa academy star could thrive under Unai Emery

Aston Villa have had an emphatic season under Unai Emery, who has taken the club to new heights since taking over in November.

The Spaniard has surpassed expectations in embarking on a journey from relegation candidates to European hopefuls in just over six months at Villa Park.

With two crucial Premier League games remaining for Villa, a top-six spot is all to play for to round off what has been not only an incredible season but the beginning of great things for the club.

As the season comes to a close, the summer transfer window looms with the Midlands reported to be involved in a number of moves as Emery takes charge of his first full transfer term.

With talk surrounding potential incomings taking centre stage, the summer will also be a chance for some of the club’s academy talents to impose themselves on the senior squad, with a range of talent due to return from loan spells.

One name was once the talk of all things bright in the academy, however after a spell of successive loan moves, the time could be nearing for Louie Barry to impress the four-time Europa League-winning coach.

Who is Louie Barry?

From La Masia to Salford City, former West Brom academy product Louie Barry has been on the move since being snatched by FC Barcelona in 2019.

Despite things not going badly for the youngster, he departed Catalonia just six months after signing due to lack of playing time, where he linked up with his boyhood club Villa.

The youngster imposed himself quickly, scoring in the FA Cup against a full-strength Liverpool side, earning praise from Jurgen Klopp when speaking to talkSPORT, calling the forward a “little Jamie Vardy” and "a proper threat."

That season, the teenage forward found the net 13 times in 17 Premier League 2 appearances and has since moved around on loans away from the comforts of the academy.

Whether it be game time or struggling to find the net, Barry has failed to make an impact as great as he did in the academy, however at just 19-years-old, the future is bright.

What could the future hold for Louie Barry at Aston Villa?

Emery is a coach that has handled a share of young players over the years, at Arsenal he nurtured the likes of Bukayo Saka and Matteo Guendouzi, and similarly at Villareal with Yeremy Pino.

Soccer Football – Europa League – Group Stage – Group E – FC Vorskla Poltava v Arsenal – NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium, Kiev, Ukraine – November 29, 2018 Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka receives instructions from manager Unai Emery before being substituted on REUTERS/Valentyn Ogirenko

Now at Villa, the Spaniard has continued to give Jacob Ramsey room to flourish in his plans, developing him into a star that academy players can hope of replicating.

The likes of Bertrand Traore and Leon Bailey in the flank positions at Villa have been impressive at times, but inconsistent in their brilliance, and flag as a potential area for improvement this summer.

Barry is a player with huge potential, versatile in attack, the forward has been lauded as “outstanding” by club legend Gabriel Agbonlahor as per Football Insider.

The 19-year-old has the talent to surpass such names, with his attacking versatility and ability in front of goal and should be looking at Emery’s squad this summer with the belief that he could make the difference after some time away.

Shami, Yadav make West Indies follow on

Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav took four wickets each to give India a 323-run lead, which resulted in a follow-on for West Indies

The Report by Sidharth Monga23-Jul-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Mohammed Shami bowled through the 2015 World Cup with a busted knee. By the end of it, he needed surgery, lost out on the IPL earnings and missed more than a year of international cricket. The BCCI compensated him for the loss of IPL money, a first such recorded instance. Once he was fit, Shami walked into the Test XI in Antigua, and showed why he might be a man worth looking after. On a slow pitch where it looked difficult to dismiss batsmen who didn’t play shots, Shami bowled with menace to take four wickets, after which Umesh Yadav chipped in with a four-for of his own, to make West Indies follow on 323 runs behind. In the follow-on, the other quick, Ishant Sharma got rid of Kraigg Brathwaite, a man known for quiet defiance who denied India for 218 balls in the first innings, in the first over.Shami’s time away from the game was well spent from the looks of it. In his last Test series, the fast bowler was guilty of offering leg-side runs when asked to bowl long spells. The coaches identified long strides in his run-up as the problem, a result of a huge workload in his first year with the Indian team. Shami came back with shorter strides, stayed at the batsmen for longer, provided fewer freebies, and took out the heart of the West Indies batting. A word of caution, though: West Indies, not the best going around, contributed to their dismissals.Brathwaite didn’t. From the time he and nightwatchman Devendra Bishoo frustrated India for 16 overs, it was clear the bowlers would have to work hard. Patience, the buzzword leading into the series, was tested. A measure of the difficulty in taking 20 wickets was how both wickets in the first session came through injudicious shots. It was a period when West Indies didn’t look for runs, which made it difficult for wickets to come. The resistance was led by Brathwaite, who rode his luck a little at the start of the day. With a forward and backward short leg in play, he failed to keep the balls angled into his ribs down on at least three occasions, but managed to avoid the fielders. His partner Bishoo’s outside edge was beaten at least seven times. It would have frustrated India even further considering Bishoo faced only 15 balls in the first eight overs of the morning. The early jitters out of the way, Brathwaite did what he is known for. Bowling outside off to him, if not a long half-volley, was a waste of energy. At the other end, though, India began to make inroads. Amit Mishra, introduced ahead of R Ashwin, provided the first breakthrough when Bishoo played an impatient sweep shot and dragged his foot over to be stumped. Just before lunch, Kohli sensed an opportunity and went back to Shami, who had been desperately unlucky in his first spell of 6-1-16-0.Shami glided in and remained threatening even if the batsmen were patient. Darren Bravo wasn’t even patient. When India were getting restless, he calmed them down by flirting with a wide delivery five minutes before lunch. The ball did bounce more than expected to take the edge, but Bravo had played with an angled bat with his feet stuck on the leg stump. On the way back for lunch, Kohli was heard telling his bowlers, “This is the reward for patience.” More reward was to follow in the second session. Marlon Samuels, who might be playing his last Test series, is not a proactive batsman. He likes to sit on the back foot, and lets bowlers bowl where they want. Shami did so and in the fifth over after the break, he bowled an in-between length, which dragged Samuels forward even though his weight was back. The ball held its line to take the edge. An aggressive short ball took the shoulder of Jermaine Blackwood’s bat to end a double-wicket maiden. This was the first dismissal that didn’t include wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. From 92 for 5, Brathwaite and debutant Roston Chase resisted for more than 16 overs. They were undone by a man often guilty of not using the crease and also offering freebies on the pads, Yadav. While he did offer freebies here too, especially in the first session, he showed a clear intent of using different angles to make the batsmen play at balls they would otherwise leave. The reward came unconventionally.Chase pulled an inviting short ball straight to short midwicket followed by a brute to Brathwaite, who on 74 didn’t look like he was going to make a mistake. Yadav went wide on the crease, angled a bouncer in, got Brathwaite to throw his gloves in front of his face.Playing his first Test as a specialist wicketkeeper, Shane Dowrich scored his second Test half-century, an unbeaten 57, to hold India off in the final session of the day, but didn’t cause enough damage to prevent a follow-on.Yadav had taken Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite out in successive balls to seemingly end India’s frustrating experience with the tail. Holder edged a wide outswinger to give Saha a record-equalling sixth dismissal for an Indian wicketkeeper, and Brathwaite pre-meditated a leave to be bowled. Dowrich, though, annoyed India a little more in partnership with No. 11 Shannon Gabriel, who lasted two balls once the legspin of Mishra was introduced. With only 90.2 overs bowled in the first innings, with a possible 13 overs to go before a full night’s rest and with five bowlers in his side, Kohli enforced the first follow-on for India since late 2012 against England in Ahmedabad. Ishant provided instant pay-off with an inswinger that trapped Brathwaite in front, but Bravo and Rajendra Chandrika prevented further damage.
