Wolves could sign "unplayable" 21-goal striker this summer

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly already turning their attention to the summer transfer window, as Julen Lopetegui’s first spell at Molineux is nearing a close.

The 2022/23 campaign has been a tough one for Wolves, who suffered a testing time under Bruno Lage at the start of the season before the Portuguese manager’s dismissal in October.

Lopetegui has been a shining light for his ability to turn fortunes around at Molineux, with survival confirmed and a host of impressive displays showing the squad’s progression under the Spaniard.

This summer, the former Real Madrid boss will have the chance to put his own stamp on the team he inherited from Lage in the bid to make improvements ahead of his first full campaign.

One area to strengthen this window is the club’s strike options, with Wolves being the lowest scorers in the league this season, netting just 30 goals in 36 games.

Lopetegui could fix his side’s woes in front of goal with a single signing, a player that’s potentially Premier League bound with almost as many goals as the entire Midland’s side this season.

What’s the latest on Viktor Gyokeres to Wolves?

As reported by Sky Sports earlier this month, Wolves are the 'leading club' in the pursuit of snatching Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

The news was relayed by Bela Shah on Sky Sports News (via Football Daily) stating that there have been “no ongoing negotiations” as of yet.

The statement is expected as the Swede continues to push for promotion with his current club, with their position next season being a potentially defining factor to the potential move.

Meanwhile, it's thought that the Championship playoff outfit will demand in excess of £20m, according to The Sun.

What could Viktor Gyokeres bring to Wolves?

The 24-year-old is the Championship’s second-highest goalscorer this season, having scored 21 goals in 46 appearances, following Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom who leads the race with 28.

Most impressively, goals aren’t the only thing the City striker has contributed to, having registered 10 assists in the Championship taking his goal contribution tally to 31 in the league alone this campaign.

Lauded as “unplayable” by teammate Maxime Biamou, the young forward could have a similar impact on Lopetegui’s goal-hungry side as the introduction of Erling Haaland had on Manchester City.

viktor-gyokeres-championship-leeds-transfer-news

Before the signing of the Norweigan, City’s top scorer was Kevin De Bruyne who netted 15 times last season, Haaland has scored 36 so far as the treble is in sight for Guardiola’s formidable squad.

While the treble is a slight reach for Lopetegui, the general impact of signing a natural goalscorer can transform a side at any level or aspiration.

It simmers down to basics, and Wolves have to get scoring if they are to progress in the Premier League next season.

Having also averaged 0.40 non-penalty goals per 90 – as per FBref – Gyokeres would be the perfect man to lead the line in the Spaniard’s project.

Leeds Could Bin Elland Road ‘Liability’ For £9k-p/w Ace

Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Swansea City defender Ryan Manning this summer and the 26-year-old's potential arrival could see the Yorkshire outfit finally get rid of Junior Firpo for good.

Could Leeds United sign Ryan Manning?

According to Football League World, the left-back is on Leeds' radar regardless of the division they find themselves in next season, with relegation looking likely to be confirmed against Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday.

The former QPR man is available on a free transfer ahead of his contract's expiry at Swansea and would represent a solid option for Leeds considering his impressive displays in the Championship this term.

Would Manning be a good signing for Leeds?

Manning was named as the Swans' player of the year following a campaign which saw him register five goals and ten assists in the second tier, earning a superb 7.20 average rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Not only is this comfortably better than what any Leeds player has averaged in the Premier League, but it is also more goal contributions than anyone in Sam Allardyce's squad, which emphasises the attacking quality the £9k-per-week Irishman could provide at Elland Road.

Russell Martin identified him as an important player for the Welsh side even in 2021, saying:

“Ryan is someone who can play anywhere. We are going to be very demanding of him because he is a talented player. He knows my feelings on him as a character and a player and he is responding brilliantly.

“I hope he can keep going, wherever he plays he is going to be an important player for us.”

Manning's versatility and experience in the Championship suggest that he could be a superb option for Leeds on a free transfer, especially if he can oust Junior Firpo at left-back, as the Spaniard continues to struggle following his arrival from Barcelona in 2021.

Could Manning replace Firpo?

There is likely to be an exodus of first-team players should Leeds suffer relegation back to the second tier, with former Barcelona man Firpo perhaps one who would consider himself too good for the Championship.

junior-firpo-leeds-united-javi-gracia-reborn

There were high hopes when Marcelo Bielsa brought him in from the Catalan side in a deal worth £12.8m two years ago but he has never really adjusted to the Premier League, with journalist David Anderson dubbing him a "liability" after a tricky debut campaign.

Things haven't gotten much better this season, as his woeful 6.42 rating from WhoScored sees him ranked as the 20th-best performer at Elland Road, with his recent red card against Newcastle United once again highlighting that he cannot be trusted defensively.

Considering Manning has averaged more key passes (2.5 vs 0.4) and shots (1.3 vs 0.1), while he has also been dribbled past on far fewer occasions per game (0.5 vs 1.2) than Firpo, it seems clear that he would be a big upgrade this summer.

Kent’s beneficiary Darren Stevens was already ‘suited and booted’ by the close of play having top-scored with 81 during Kent’s fascinating Specsavers County Championship tussle with promotion-chasing Worcestershire. With a benefit dinner at the Shepherd Neame Brewery in Faversham awaiting him, Stevens admitted his disappointment after his side had closed on 397 for 9 for an overall lead of 186 at the mid-point of this the 165th Canterbury Cricket Week fixture.”We’re disappointed with our day’s work to be fair. I got in, Dickson and Denly did too, but we all got out without going on to get a big score,” said the former Leicestershire batsman.”Yes, we’ve got a nice little lead, but we only wanted to be four or five wickets won at this stage. Personally I’m disappointed. I started counting down to my hundred and it proved a big mistake. It’ll be the last time I ever do that and I’m really gutted to miss out on three figures.”If I were still there at the end of the day I’d be sitting pretty on 140 not out and the side would have a 220 lead. We should be in a stronger position.”The 40-year-old all-rounder batted 142 minutes and hit 12 fours and a six which, in tandem with half-centuries by Sean Dickson and Will Gidman – the latter on loan from Nottinghamshire and on his Kent county championship debut – ensured that the hosts will go into day three in a fairly dominant position.Resuming on their overnight score of 55 without loss in response to Worcestershire’s 211 all out, Kent lost three first-session wickets as batsmen again struggled to bat long-term on a spicy Canterbury pitch.Daniel Bell-Drummond, celebrating his 23rd birthday, added only seven to his first-day score before becoming the first casualty of Ladies Day at the world’s oldest cricket festival. The right-hander fenced a Kyle Abbott leg-cutter to second slip, where Ross Whiteley held onto the good catch diving to his left in front of first slip to make it 74 for 1.Joe Denly moved smoothly to 21 before having his off stump trimmed by a Charlie Morris yorker then Sam Northeast spooned a catch to cover off a leading edge to gift Ed Barnard a wicket and leave centre stage marooned on 995 county championship runs for the summer. At the other end Dickson, Kent’s South African-born right-hander, posted a 106-ball half-century with nine fours – his fourth 50 of the county championship campaign.Having taken his side in at lunch on 152 for 3, Dickson added only two to his interval score before chopping on against Ed Barnard to go for a well-made 77.Sam Billings and Stevens then teamed up to add an attractive 40 runs inside 13 overs before Billings, on 33, edged an attempted cut to the keeper off the bowling of Charlie Morris with Kent still trailing by two on first innings.Stevens and Alex Blake took the hosts into profit before Blake (9) lamely chipped to short mid-wicket off the bowling of Joe Leach with Kent seven short of their second batting bonus point.Stevens marched on to a 67 ball 50 with six fours and a six, the 69th half-century of his career but only the fourth of this somewhat barren benefit summer.Soon after tea and only 19 from is maiden ton of the summer Stevens slapped one to cover off the bowling of Joe Leach then James Tredwell gloved a half-hearted pull to the keeper to go for 9.The Kent tail wagged however, as Gidman and Matt Coles combined to add 51 inside 14 overs before left-handed Coles holed out to cow corner.Gidman was still unbeaten at the close however, having posted his maiden Championship 50 for Kent from 86 balls and with five fours.

Arthur left 'frustrated' by Irfan's fitness

Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s coach, admitted it was very frustrating to see Mohammad Irfan only able to deliver five overs at Headingley before leaving the field with what was said to be cramp

Andrew McGlashan at Headingley02-Sep-2016Mickey Arthur, Pakistan’s coach, admitted it was “very frustrating” to see Mohammad Irfan only able to deliver five overs at Headingley before leaving the field with what was said to be cramp despite having been training as a standby player.Irfan had been drafted into the squad after Mohammad Hafeez was ruled out of the series and was one of four changes Pakistan made after conceding the world record total of 444 for 3 at Trent Bridge. He delivered Pakistan’s fieriest spell of the one-day series to remove Jason Roy and Alex Hales, setting back England’s chase of 248, and nearly claimed Eoin Morgan as well during a hostile over in the ninth. That battle with Morgan ended his first spell when he was then withdrawn from the attack after five overs. He continued fielding for a period which included holding a catch at fine leg to remove Joe Root, then disappeared to the dressing room.He eventually prepared to bowl again for the 42nd over but only managed one delivery, a vast wide off the pitch outside off, before trudging off again with Arthur clearly unimpressed as he watched from the sidelines.Leading into his comeback match, Irfan had bowled just four competitive overs – in a domestic T20 for Islamabad against Lahore on August 26 – although Arthur did reference two “50-over games” as part of his period with the National Cricket Academy (NCA).”It’s very frustrating,” Arthur said. “There were checks and balances in place. He was put on standby when we selected our one-day squad, he went to the NCA and did his training. He played two 50-over games and 20-over game and was resident at the NCA for a period of a week and a half.”Arthur conceded “I’m finding my way with the one-day team” – which was already in a far greater degree of flux than the Test side when he came in as coach – but insisted he has a full say in selection alongside the chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq.”I want to give guys opportunities and then we’ll know by the end of the tour who we can and can’t take forward. Irfan was a player of interest and I wanted to have a look at him go. Inzi and myself have developed a really good relationship. We speak a hell of a lot. I spent probably 40 minutes on the phone to him yesterday just discussing where we were and possible names who could come in in positions I’ve identified. What I am finding out is who can do a job and who can’t.”Arthur, who before the match at Lord’s earlier in this series said that no one’s position was safe in the side, and put his over-30s on particular notice, admitted it had been an “eye-opening” four matches against England.”England are a phenomenal cricket team, power hitters all the way down, we haven’t been able to get quick starts and clear the ropes,” he said. “We just don’t have the players to do that within our group of 15 at the moment. Those are things we need to address and bear in mind for the next series. It also gives me an opportunity to decide who we take forward and how we play our cricket. With every game that becomes clearer and clearer.”One issue he remains adamant on, however, is that players must conform to the off-field standards expected. One particular name in focus continues to be Umar Akmal whose attitude has come in for previous criticism by Arthur. He is still sidelined from the national side, having not been included for the one-off T20 at Old Trafford, and Arthur was again cautious in his assessment of Akmal.”They have to conform. You would like to think, and I’ve never worked with Umar so it’s all hearsay for me, that he’s learnt a lesson,” Arthur said. “I haven’t had any conversations with him yet. He’s a very good finisher. His form in the local T20 competition is very good so he’s putting his hand up and he’s going about his business in a fairly good way. But in terms of other off-field stuff, that will be decided at a later date and we’ll never compromise.”

Chelsea Close To Selling £100k-A-Week Star

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic is closing in on a move to Manchester City this summer, according to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Is Kovacic expected to leave Chelsea?

The Blues suffered a hugely disappointing season in the Premier League, finishing 12th in the division, which almost nobody could have predicted back in August. A combination of managerial issues, poor individual performances and iffy signings all played a part in the struggles, and huge improvements are needed in 2023/24.

Kovacic is one of many players who has fallen a long way below his top level, with his displays often lacking the influence they have had in the past. Injuries also prevented him to just 17 starts in the league, and he couldn't do enough to prevent some very mediocre days at the office for Chelsea.

The £100,000-a-week Croatian is out of contract at Stamford Bridge this time next year, meaning this summer is the last chance to earn a fee for his services. A move to City has been strongly mooted in recent days and it now looks like it is a matter of time until he heads there.

Chelsea's Mateo Kovacic

Are Man City close to signing Kovacic?

Writing on Twitter on Thursday, Romano claimed that personal terms are almost agreed between Kovacic and City, with his move to the Premier League champions now feeling like a formality:

"More on Mateo Kovacic and Manchester City news revealed yesterday. Been told the agreement on the personal terms between Kovacic and City is really close, almost completed. Man City and Chelsea will be in direct contact to discuss the fee. Kovacic will leave."

Losing Kovacic has both plus and minus points, with the 29-year-old clearly a talented footballer, having won the Champions League during his time with Chelsea. He is also a 93-cap Croatian international, which says a huge amount about his quality and longevity, while his class in midfield is undeniable.

That being said, he has really struggled over the past 12 months, and there could be an argument to say that they are selling him a little bit past his peak, at a time when it makes more sense to receive money now, rather than lose him on a free transfer next summer.

Kovacic could easily excel for City, given his intelligence and ability to keep possession in tight areas – he enjoyed a 90.8% pass completion rate for Croatia at the 2022 World Cup – but now could be the right time for Chelsea to allow him to leave.

PCA warns against BPL involvement

The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) is to advise England-qualified players against participating in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) on security grounds

George Dobell03-Oct-2016

Ravi Bopara took part in last year’s BPL and has been drafted for 2016•BCB

The Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) is to advise England-qualified players against participating in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) on security grounds. While the organisation, effectively the players’ union, was happy to sanction the England tour of Bangladesh after the PCA chief executive, David Leatherdale, witnessed security arrangements at first hand, it does not anticipate the same level of protection at the BPL.The PCA has advised players not to take part in the tournament before. Last year it asked players to sign an acknowledgment that they understood security arrangements were their own responsibility and that they went in spite of the PCA’s advice. In previous years it has warned of the unreliability of payments for playing in the league and expressed concerns over the anti-corruption arrangements.Among the England-qualified players expected to take part in the BPL this year are Ravi Bopara, Tymal Mills, Riki Wessels, Samit Patel, Josh Cobb and Richard Gleeson. It is understood that Jason Roy, who is centrally contracted by the ECB, and Kevin Pietersen are among those who declined offers to participate this year. Roy’s decision was not made on the instigation of the ECB but with the benefit of some advice from the PCA.Any player taking part in the league will require a No Objection Certificate signed by their county and the ECB. It is far from certain they will be granted in all instances. While the PCA believes that Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice has not changed since it warned players against participation in the BPL in 2015, the issue has gained more attention following a terrorist attack in Dhaka on July 1 that left 22 dead and in light of the England team’s decision to go ahead with their tour. The FCO currently warns of a “heightened threat of further terrorist attacks” and states that Dhaka airport does not currently meet international security standards.Advice on its website says: “Attacks could be indiscriminate although foreigners, in particular westerners, may be directly targeted. Crowded areas and places where westerners are known to gather may be at higher risk of attack. You should minimise your exposure to these areas, consider your movements carefully and take appropriate security precautions.”The Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) is also understood to have apprehensions over the tournament. It stresses it has not seen security arrangements for the BPL and insists that any playing taking part will do so “at their own risk”. It also notes that, while “security provided to international touring teams in Bangladesh relies heavily on government input from numerous agencies… It is unclear whether a similar level of security will be provided at this event.”The FICA statement adds: “Anyone taking part in the event needs to be aware of the increased level of risk and understand clearly that all informed advice is to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to Bangladesh.”

West Brom Braced For Approach For "Very Talented" Key Figure

West Bromwich Albion are prepared to receive an approach from Leeds United to enquire about the services of Carlos Corberan, according to reports in the last 48 hours.

Is Carlos Corberan leaving West Brom?

The Spaniard was first appointed at The Hawthorns back in October 2022 and his debut season in the Midlands was a huge success having finished just three points outside of the Championship play-offs, and this impressive form in the dugout didn’t go unnoticed in the Premier League.

Sky Sports reported in February that the Whites were interested in a swoop for the 40-year-old to replace Jesse Marsch, but despite there being plenty of speculation that he would depart, he quickly shut down exit rumours by signing a new contract that keeps him at the club until 2027.

Following Sam Allardyce’s departure now though having failed to prevent his side from relegation, the Elland Road outfit are on the hunt for a new long-term boss, and if the following update is to be believed, there’s a chance they could come calling again for Corberan.

Are Leeds appointing Corberan?

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke, West Brom are “braced for an approach” from Leeds who have already begun their search for Allardyce’s successor ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Corberan is a manager that will be “on the radar” of the Yorkshire club due to not only their previous interest earlier in the year, but also the fact that he used to work there under Marcelo Bielsa so will have existing connections to the hierarchy.

Andrea Radrizzani and the 49ers have specified that they want to recruit a “head coach” rather than a permanent boss, and it’s stated that this could be a “hint” that they are going to take a second bite of the cherry for the Baggies man, with the Hawthorns club dealing with financial difficulties.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

West Brom were in serious danger of relegation themselves when Corberan was appointed, but having completely transformed the side to the point that they almost made the top six, retaining his services beyond the summer is an absolute no-brainer of a decision.

The Cheste native, whose preferred formation is a 4-2-3-1, has won 17, drawn five and lost 11 of his 33 games in charge so far whilst averaging 1.70 points per match, via Transfermarkt, which even though is a real mixed bag of results, is consistent enough to be challenging in the second tier.

Corberan, who was previously hailed “very talented” by Bielsa himself, also took Huddersfield Town to the Championship play-off final during his time at the John Smith’s Stadium so knows what it takes to compete and be successful at this level, and there’s no reason why he can’t be up there challenging again in 12 months time with a full term and new players under his belt.
