Livingstone makes irresistible case for England call-up

Selectors searching for reasons why Liam Livingstone should represent his country in next month’s one-day internationals against Ireland did not have to ransack videos for their buttressing arguments this chilly, sunlit Sunday at Emirates Old Trafford

Paul Edwards at Old Trafford23-Apr-2017
ScorecardSelectors searching for reasons why Liam Livingstone should represent his country in next month’s one-day internationals against Ireland did not have to ransack videos for their buttressing arguments this chilly, sunlit Sunday at Emirates Old Trafford. There was the mid-morning leg side swat off Jack Leach which sent the ball out of the ground. Or there was the effortless lofted persuasion over the midwicket boundary off the same bowler which brought up Livingstone’s 192-ball century. No less admirable was the straight drive off Peter Trego or the deceptively facile leg-side clip off Tim Groenewald which saw the stand-in Lancashire captain pass his previous career-best score. In less than a year Livingstone has now made five first-class centuries, one more than Haseeb Hameed. If English cricket has its wits about it, the national side should call on his abundant talents without observing the frequently pointless protocols of progression. When he was eventually dismissed two overs after tea, caught at shortish cover by Dean Elgar when he skied another attempted leg side hit off the persevering Leach, Livingstone had made a career-best 168 in four minutes over seven hours. What he had not done, however, was leave his side with the sort of lead that might permit a declaration on the fourth morning. Thus Livingstone seemed disconsolate even as he accepted the chivalrous congratulations of the Somerset players. It is often the way. The very best have no time for flawed excellence.Nevertheless, Livingstone’s batting brooked little criticism on the third day of this match and it threatened to overshadow both Alex Davies’ very fine 130 and a combative Somerset bowling performance which may yet see Tom Abell’s team emerge victorious on the final evening. The problem about Livingstone, although it is really no such thing, is that the sublime arcs and outrageous effrontery of his batting can transcend the context in which they are displayed. They should not do so, as Livingstone patiently repeats to all those prepared to listen. His innings on this third day would have been of small value had he not been accompanied in a 245-run stand for the third-wicket by that splendidly scrappy bantamweight, Alex Davies, who has now made two centuries in five innings this season and is a fully-fledged all-rounder.Somerset’s bowlers, too, made an immense contribution to a day which never lost its fascination and a match which may be building up to a last session to treasure if only bad weather keeps its distance from Manchester 16. Only five wickets fell on Sunday but each was significant and the three lbws may offer encouragement to Lancashire bowlers hoping to detect variable bounce. The first to fall was that of Davies, who was trapped in front by Lewis Gregory before the members in the 1864 suite had digested their lunchtime Oscietra and blini. Rob Jones then batted with encouraging competence for his 37 before both he and Dane Vilas fell in the space of four balls to Craig Overton, who has bullocked to the wicket from the Pavilion End for 29 overs this innings and whose accuracy deserved greater rewards. And when Leach followed the dismissal of Livingstone with that of Jordan Clark, who was stumped for five, Lancashire’s lead was only 210. It was extended to 254 by a deceptively modest unbroken partnership of 44 between Ryan McLaren and Stephen Parry and we have an enthralling last day before us. We are lucky people. All the same, the last word should go to Livingstone who learned his cricket not in Lancastrian heartlands but in Barrow-in-Furness, a curious and marvellous . For if Barrow is on your tourist trail, you are, one suspects, a pretty weird tourist. It may be near the Lake District but the only romantics wandering lonely as a cloud in the town have fallen out with their mates. The delights of Furness Abbey and industrial history are not for everyone. Barrow is, however, a proper place, one which fosters a splendid independence of outlook in its citizens and a reluctance to concede accepted truths without demur. Liam Livingstone is a Barrovian and it shows. It reveals itself in his dry humour but also in his insistence that he must work things out for himself, a dogged self-belief which, to their credit, the Lancashire and England Lions coaches encourage. The willingness of proper cricket people like John Stanworth, Mark Chilton and Andy Flower to let the young cricketer both take and leave their suggestions is greatly appreciated.”Everything I have done has been self-taught,” he said. “Every time I have tried to be coached it hasn’t been great for me. Myself and Chilly have a great relationship because he knows as soon as he starts to get technical with me, then I start to struggle. You know your own game at this stage; you know what works for you and what doesn’t. Over the winter with the Lions I was encouraged just to do what I do well, and I am sure that is what it is like with England.”That is great because I know relaxing and being as positive as I can is very good for me. I did a lot of work with Andy Flower over the winter and he enjoyed the fact I questioned him on a few technical things and that’s a great way to work with a coach. Sometimes you just get told to do things, and they don’t work for everyone.”Over two contrasting innings in this match Livingstone has showed what his cricket is about and what works for him. However, sparing his independence, there is one thing that he should be told very soon; he should be told that he is playing one-day cricket for England.

Rangers Make New Transfer Bid To Sign 24y/o

Glasgow Rangers have made a new offer to sign Feyenoord forward Danilo, according to reports in the Netherlands.

Are Rangers signing Danilo?

Michael Beale and Ibrox officials have been busy so far this summer, bringing in a number of new players ahead of the manager’s first full season in charge.

Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling, Jack Butland and Leon Balogun have all made the move to Glasgow on free transfers after leaving Norwich, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and QPR respectively, whereas Brighton forward Abdallah Sima has arrived on a season-long loan.

Money has also been spent on attackers Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers from US Cremonese and Atalanta respectively in deals worth a combined €8.5m.

However, further additions in the final third appear to be of interest to the club and Beale, with Danilo heavily linked with a move to Scotland. Reports have suggested that the forward really wants to join the Scottish Premiership giants, with Rangers making a bid for the player last month.

Unfortunately for those at Ibrox, the offer was turned down and was believed to be “miles” off of Feyenoord’s valuation, with the Eredivisie side wanting more than £5m for the striker.

A new update has now emerged from Dutch outlet 1908 regarding Rangers and Danilo. They claim that the Scottish side are still in for the player and have made a new offer this week that comes closer to Feyenoord’s asking price.

Danilo has a generous multi-year offer on the table from those at Ibrox, with Beale personally thought to be an admirer of the forward.

Feyenoord striker Danilo.

Who is Danilo?

Danilo is primarily a centre-forward who can also play in an attacking midfield role and appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €6.5m Transfermarkt valuation.

The 24-year-old is sponsored by Adidas and actually shares the same agency as Rangers players Fashion Sakala, John Lundstram, Connor Goldson and Rabbi Matondo, so the club will already know his representatives.

The Brazilian began his career on the books with Ajax, where he was hailed by now Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, who called him the “best finisher” in the side at the time.

“Danilo is the best finisher we have in the squad.”

He scored nine times in 20 senior appearances for Ajax and enjoyed a successful season on loan with FC Twente back in 2020/21, netting 17 Eredivisie goals in 33 games.

Since joining Feyenoord on a free transfer last year, Danilo has found the back of the net on 14 occasions in 48 appearances, helping the club to the Dutch topflight title in the process.

With games coming thick and fast both domestically and in Europe for Rangers next season, having plenty of attacking options could benefit Beale, especially with Alfredo Morelos leaving Glasgow this summer.

Dessers and Lammers have already been brought in, and by the looks of things, Rangers are doing everything they can to add Danilo to their squad over the coming weeks, making this one to watch ahead of the cub's first game of the new season on August 5 against Kilmarnock.

Nottingham Forest: Romano drops big "in the coming days" update

Nottingham Forest former loanee Dean Henderson 'will' return to the City Ground on a permanent basis this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Is Dean Henderson going to Nottingham Forest?

According to Telegraph Sport, Nottingham Forest are 'locked in talks' to try and bring Henderson back to the City Ground on a permanent deal following his loan spell at the club in 2022/23.

The report states that Henderson is their preferred goalkeeping target if a fee can be agreed between themselves and Manchester United while Wolverhampton Wanderers stopper Jose Sa is an alternative target.

Last term, £100k-a-week earner Henderson made 20 appearances for Nottingham Forest and managed to keep six clean sheets, as shown by Transfermarkt.

Manchester United are expected to strike a deal to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, which will then offset Henderson's exit according to talkSPORT, who claim on Twitter: "BREAKING: The deal to sign André Onana is now set to be sealed in the next 24 hours to allow him to join MUFC on their US tour. Dean Henderson is then expected to be sold to Nottingham Forest. – talkSPORT sources understand."

Evidence that Henderson could be set to exit Manchester United is further supported by the fact that the Red Devils are keen on bringing in Urawa Red Diamonds stopper Zion Suzuki, according to respected journalist Romano, who recently revealed on Twitter: "Manchester United are working on Zion Suzuki deal. Japanese goalkeeper is one of 3 options as backup GK and talks are now taking place on player side."

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Romano has indicated that Henderson's pending transfer to Nottingham Forest is close to being completed.

He stated: “For sure United will bring in a new backup goalkeeper because the intention is to let Dean Henderson leave for Nottingham Forest in the coming days.

"There is still a conversation between United and Forest on the final fee.

"But I think in the end Henderson will become a Nottingham Forest player and they will bring in a new backup goalkeeper.”

Who else are Nottingham Forest keen on bringing to the City Ground?

Nottingham Forest are fond of a transfer incoming at the City Ground and it wouldn't be a surprise to see a few more arrivals in the East Midlands before competitive action gets underway this campaign.

The Scottish Sun claim that Rangers full-back Borna Barisic could be on his way to Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £2 million after betting charges were brought against Harry Toffolo by the FA that are expected to result in a ban for the 27-year-old.

Burnley loanee Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

90min report that Nottingham Forest alongside Fulham are leading the chase to sign Manchester City youngster Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who enjoyed an excellent campaign for Burnley last term as they cruised to the Sky Bet Championship title.

Southampton striker Che Adams is a target for Nottingham Forest; however, the Tricky Trees will face competition from Everton, Burnley and Leeds United for the Scotland international, as per TEAMtalk.

His current employers are open to initiating a sale this window to avoid losing him on a free transfer when his contract runs out at St Mary's Stadium in 2024.

Leicestershire kept their slim hopes of qualification for the final stages of the Royal London Cup alive with a comfortable five wicket win over Derbyshire at the Fischer County Ground.Half-centuries from Ned Eckersley, Lewis Hill and Cameron Delport saw the Foxes home after seamers Gavin Griffiths and Dieter Klein had each taken three wickets in restricting the Falcons to a score that always looked well under par on a good Grace Road pitch, despite a fine unbeaten 96 from Alex Hughes.Put in after losing the toss, Derbyshire quickly lost opener Ben Slater, caught behind after edging an airy drive at a wide delivery from left-armer Klein. Fellow opener Billy Godleman was superbly caught by Mark Cosgrove, diving to his left at second slip after edging an attempted back foot drive at Clint McKay, and Griffiths up-rooted Shiv Thakor’s off-stump with a full delivery that seamed back in.In the circumstances the Falcons could have done without the misunderstanding which left both Wayne Madsen and Hughes stranded in mid-pitch before Madsen was run out.Jeevan Mendis and Hughes set about rebuilding the innings, adding 69 for the fifth wicket before Mendis, shortly after having somehow slog-swept Rob Sayer for six while taking his bottom hand off the bat handle, tried to lift the off-spinner over mid-off and gave McKay an easy catch.Darren Smit and Luis Reece came and went quickly, but Matt Critchley also gave Hughes solid support in adding 55 for the eighth wicket before Critchley was bowled off his pads by Klein.Ben Cotton’s dismissal, well caught by Hill diving to his right behind the stumps, left Hughes stranded on a List A career best.Leicestershire also lost an early wicket, the in-form Mark Pettini edging Hardus Viljoen’s first ball to Hughes at second slip, but Delport hit his fellow South African for a big straight six as he and Eckersley added 76 for the second wicket.A superb catch by Smit, standing up behind the stumps to the medium pace of Thakor, ended Delport’s innings, and when Cosgrove and then Aadil Ali followed in short order, the Foxes were wobbling. With plenty of overs in hand, however, Eckersley and Hill could afford to play sensibly before accelerating, bringing up a century partnership in 16 overs. Eckersley was run out by Madsen with just two runs needed, but Hill saw his side over the line with ten overs in hand.Leicestershire must still beat Yorkshire in their final match, at Headingley on Tuesday, and hope results elsewhere go in their favour, to qualify for the knock-out stage of the competition. Derbyshire cannot now qualify, but Leicestershire will be hoping their East Midland neighbours do them a favour by beating Worcestershire, also on Tuesday.

The South Africans enjoyed a productive outing at New Road, with four batsmen registering half-centuries as England Lions managed just three wickets on another shortened day.Heino Kuhn, who is expected to make his Test debut at Lord’s next week, and Hashim Amla retired in sight of hundreds, while Temba Bavuma was unbeaten on 85 when an early close arrived due to bad light. Quinton de Kock added a brisk 51 as the South Africans scored 324 from the 77.3 overs possible.George Garton added a second wicket, after Kuhn’s retirement, when he dismissed JP Duminy for 25 and Liam Plunkett dismissed Theunis de Bruyn – the potential deputy for Faf du Plessis if South Africa’s captain does not make at back in time after the birth of his child.De Kock then added 82 in less than 20 overs with Bavuma during the afternoon before before falling to the back-up seam of hid former U-19s team-mate Keaton Jennings.Kuhn, who won a call-up after making an unbeaten 200 in a pink-ball game against Hampshire and then a century against the Lions for South Africa A, continued his good form by scoring 80 off 126 balls before retiring.Amla was similarly assured, with 91 from 148, while Bavuma batted for more than three hours, putting on an unbroken 68 with Chris Morris to give South Africa a satisfying day ahead of the four-Test series, which starts on Thursday.

Leeds Set To table Offer For 24-Year-Old Defender

Leeds United are expected to make an offer for Palmeiras defender Joaquin Piquerez in the coming days, according to an update from journalist Diego Firmino.

Who is Joaquin Piquerez?

The 24-year-old is now an experienced player who has enjoyed a good career to date, winning nine caps for Uruguay and playing for Palmeiras since 2021, having arrived from Penarol.

Piquerez has made 101 appearances for his current club, generally operating as a left-back but also at wing-back, scoring five goals and registering nine assists in that time. He also assisted 11 times in 53 outings for Penarol, outlining the attacking quality that he can provide from deep.

It could be that Leeds are looking to bring in a new left-back following the form of the hugely disappointing Junior Firpo, who failed to live up to expectations after arriving from Barcelona. That area now looks hugely lacking in quality, and if the Whites are to be among the promotion favourites in 2023/24, such positions need to be filled sufficiently.

Piquerez looks like a primary target for Leeds, following a significant update that has emerged regarding his future as they look to get a deal over the line in swift fashion.

Could Leeds sign Joaquin Piquerez?

Daniel Farke

According to Firmino on Twitter [via Sport Witness], Leeds are set to bid for Piquerez in the very near future, with a transfer having the potential to develop in a matter of days:

"Since I only talk about exits really, Leeds United interested in Piquerez. If not, proposals should arrive in the next few days. Whether it will come out or not, I don't know, it's another 500. Let's wait."

Piquerez may not necessarily be a household name to many Leeds supporters, but he is someone who could be a really shrewd signing as they look to bounce straight back in 2023/24 and sealing promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

The fact that he has won nine caps for a Uruguay side featuring so much talent from Luis Suarez to Fede Valverde says a lot about his quality, and the Whites could arguably be signing someone who is far too good to be playing in the second tier of English football.

At 24, Piquerez is still relatively young, making him a long-term acquisition for Leeds, and while his contract doesn't expire until the end of 2025, he shouldn't cost too much, and more funds should be available following 49ers Enterprises' takeover at Elland Road.

It is essential that an upgrade on Firpo comes in, avoiding another transfer error and ensuring someone consistent arrives, and Piquerez's experience to date suggests that he could make an ideal signing.

There is the risk that he has never tested himself in European football, and therefore could find it difficult to adjust to the pace and power of the English game, but if Daniel Farke sees him as a strong option to come in at left-back, the Leeds manager has to be trusted in the transfer market, bringing in the players he wants in the process.
