Aston Villa are "going to be very busy this summer" as they target Stade Rennais winger Jérémy Doku, claims Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol.

Is Jérémy Doku joining Aston Villa this summer?

It has been a wild nine months for Villa since the appointment of Spanish tactician Unai Emery as manager. The club went from a relegation scrap to a different scrap altogether, one for European football.

With their qualification for the Conference League secure and spirits high, the West Midlands outfit have been on something of a spending spree of late.

First came Leicester City's highly rated Youri Tielemans on a free, before Villarreal's Pau Torres arrived for a fee of £31.5m. Most recently, the Villans have announced the arrival of exciting French winger Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record fee in the region of £52m.

If that were the end of the club's business this summer, it would be hard to argue that it wasn't fantastic as it is.

However, the Claret and Blue aren't finished just yet, as they look set to target Belgian prospect Jeremy Doku.

Solhekol explained the situation live on Sky Sports News (via Football Daily), saying:

"According to reports in France as well, Aston Villa are targeting another winger, the Rennes winger Jérémy Doku. So Villa appear as if they're going to be very busy this summer.

"Unai Emery [is] really working to strengthen his squad."

How good is Jérémy Doku?

Having spent his short career exclusively in the Belgian and French leagues so far, fans in England could be forgiven for not knowing much about the exciting 21-year-old. However, given the potential people think he possesses, it might not be long until everyone knows his name.

This potential led to GOAL placing him in 14th place on their list of the top 50 wonderkids in world football back in 2021, ahead of the likes of Chelsea's promising winger Noni Madueke. And unlike so many 'wonderkids' before him, Doku has been slowly progressing and improving his game in the years since his nomination.

Last season he made 29 Ligue 1 appearances for Rennais, scoring six goals, providing two assists and maintaining a passing accuracy of 86.4%, which was enough for him to average a seriously impressive match rating of 7.08 – the fourth-best in the entire squad – per WhoScored.

Where he shines, however, and gives us a glimpse of just how exceptional a talent he really is, are his underlying numbers.

According to FBref, which compares players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, Doku sits in the top 1% for Non-Penalty Goals, expected assists, shot-creating actions, progressive carries, successful take-ons, touches in the opposition's penalty area and progressive passes received per 90.

Alongside his frankly outrageous raw numbers, he has also received praise from one of the best footballers on the planet, Kylian Mbappe, who, back in 2021, said:

"Recently, I was speaking with my father about a player who impressed me because of his speed qualities, that is Doku, at Rennes. In five years as a professional, I have never seen someone from a standing start demonstrate so much power."

Even Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has given his opinion on the dynamic winger, saying:

"He's agile, fast and he knows how to dribble. Sure, he sometimes makes a mistake, but who doesn't? It is a diamond in the rough."

If Villa can get this deal over the line and find a way to play him with Diaby, they could be fighting for more than just European football come the end of next season.

It's been a very busy summer at the Emirates Stadium as both manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu work behind-the-scenes to strengthen key areas of the squad.

Arsenal, much to the delight of their fanbase, have already completed a trio of marquee deals for Germany international winger Kai Havertz, star midfielder Declan Rice and versatile defender Jurrien Timber.

Havertz put pen to paper on a £65 million move from Chelsea and Timber joined for around £38 million from Ajax, while ex-West Ham star Rice sealed his transfer to Arsenal for a club-record £105 million.

Rice will strengthen Arteta's midfield to no end, with Arteta hailing his serious quality just after his side announced the capture.

“We’re really happy that Declan is joining us," said Arteta.

"He is a player with tremendous ability, who has been performing at a high level in the Premier League and for England for a number of seasons now. Declan is bringing undoubted quality to the club and he is an exceptional talent who has the potential to be very successful here.

“Declan has great experience in the Premier League at only 24 years old. He has captained a very good West Ham team and as we all saw, he recently lifted a European trophy. The responsibility and role he has taken on has been very impressive and we are really excited that he is joining us.”

It has been mooted that Arsenal will be focusing on player sales for the foreseeable, especially after spending over £200 million so far, but surprise reports in the last two days claim they've now entered the market for a new goalkeeper.

This is echoed by renowned reporter Romano, who has taken to Twitter with his own news on their fresh links to Raya of Brentford.

"David Raya prefers Arsenal move over Bayern," wrote the journalist.

"Deal depends on clubs now but Arsenal expected to bid soon in order to accelerate talks.

"Negotiations with Bayern are currently off after loan offered in the morning — not what player/Brentford wanted."

How good is David Raya?

The Spaniard, according to WhoScored, stood out as one of Brentford's best-performing players per 90 in the top flight last season.

Raya also featured over more league minutes than any other player in Thomas Frank's squad, playing every single game for them over 2022/2023 (WhoScored).

Speaking after the 27-year-old received his first ever call-up to the Spain squad last year, Frank also hailed his shot-stopper's "very aggressive" style of play.

"You can't have a strong mentality if you don't have any setbacks," said Frank.

Glasgow Rangers 2023/24 Premiership campaign got off to the worst possible start, slipping to an opening-day defeat at Rugby Park.

One player who is edging closer to departing is Fashion Sakala, as he looks set to end a two-year stint in Glasgow.

Having been left out of the squad to face Killie last weekend, Beale offered an update on his future, saying: “Fashion won’t be involved tomorrow because he is away having discussions. He’s talking to one of the Saudi clubs.

“He is a boy and a player that I have a fantastic relationship with but sometimes in football these things happen, an opportunity comes up and you discuss it with the player and from there something can happen.

“So he is away having talks, there is nothing confirmed either way but he won’t be with the squad tomorrow.”

It is looking likely that he will leave before the end of the transfer window, and with Beale signing four forwards during the summer, he may not need to replace him, immediately at least.

The Ibrox side have been linked with a move for Sunderland youngster Tom Watson however, and he has the potential to make Beale forget all about the Zambian in the coming years.

Who is Tom Watson?

The 17-year-old has been lighting up the Sunderland youth teams over the previous two seasons, registering 25 goal contributions across just 43 matches at U18 and U21 level.

This is even more impressive considering he is usually deployed on the left wing, although he can also play in a more central role. This is similar to Sakala, who tended to operate on either wing or through the middle last term.

Watson clearly wasn’t fazed by making the step-up to Premier League 2 level last season, scoring twice and grabbing three assists across seven matches, and his vast potential even led to a first team debut.

Tony Mowbray handed him a two-minute cameo against Huddersfield in April and this will give him a taste of the big time, which should give the youngster more confidence.

Sakala did register 20 goal contributions during 2022/23, however he wasn’t exactly the most clinical of players, missing 11 big chances which also included squandering two open goal chances against Celtic in the League Cup Final and the Scottish Cup semifinal.

Watson could perhaps offer a more ruthless nature in front of goal and was praised for his finishing abilities by journalist Josh Bunting, who said: “Tom Watson is a player to keep and eye on ,he’s scored for Sunderland 18’s against Leeds this afternoon, that’s three goals in his last four games , makes it stick up top , only 16 so is very much new in 18’s football but has taken it to it like a duck to water, natural finisher.”

He may not make an impact straight away should Beale lure him north of the border, but Watson looks to have the ideal qualities which could make him a stand-out figure in the future.
