xG, assists, dribbling: who is the best Premier League striker?

The Premier League is the biggest and richest league in the world. That naturally means many of the world's greatest strikers are plying their trade in England's top flight.

But who exactly is the best? That's always a tricky question, given different strikers do different things. One might be a fantastic one-v-one player, while another could be the perfect link-up man in his team's attack.

Of course, there is one category that stands out as key: goals. That's ultimately the metric you judge strikers by, and how they get those goals is important. So we're going to provide the data and let you be the judge.

With all of that in mind, Football FanCast has had a look at the numbers to see who stands out in the Premier League right now. And for those saying 'we all know who the best is, it's obviously Erling Haaland' – well, you're right. He is. But that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of interesting stuff, here.

What are the key stats for strikers?

We've primarily focused on attacking stats here and essentially how players help their team going forward. Primarily, of course, that's goals.

We're also looking at their expected goals, how they're performing against their expected goals, their assists, their key passes, their dribbling, and how many shots a player helps create per 90 minutes.

We'll explain exactly what these all mean when we get to them.

What is a striker?

ansu-fati-marcus-rashford-tottenham-transfer-premier-league

Yes, that's a ridiculous question but we wanted to comment on exactly how we're picking players. Essentially, we're focusing on players who have played at least a couple of games as a central striker so far this season. It's still early days, after all.

Some players, like Mohamed Salah, might be up there in the stats but we think you're pushing it to call them a striker. He's a winger or a wide forward – and that's a very different role.

And then there are the likes of Marcus Rashford, Son Heung-min or Julian Alvarez, who do play up top but also in wider or deeper roles. We're including them for now – but if they end up primarily in other roles, we'll stop featuring them.

No real explanation needed here – we're just judging the top scorer in the league right now. That's currently Erling Haaland, and we're going to make a wild prediction here and say we will never have to change that fact throughout the season.

Haaland is unquestionably the best goalscorer in the country and, arguably, the world. His record-breaking campaign last season is under threat this year and few would be surprised if he surpasses 36 goals.

As for the others, Evan Ferguson certainly boosted his numbers with a hat-trick already. Bryan Mbeumo and Odsonne Édouard have started well, too – but we imagine 2nd place onwards will change dramatically over the coming weeks.

Expected goals, or xG, assigns a percentage chance of a goal to each shot taken, based on data of previous similar shots. Have an effort on the goal line? Expect 0.9 (there's still a very small chance you could miss). Trying to smash one from 30 yards through a crowd of players? More like 0.1. Add those totals up and you have the number of expected goals.

As you can see, Haaland leads the list here. This is essentially the hallmark of his play – getting chances. Haaland's positioning and ability to turn just about everything into a chance leads to plenty of high-quality efforts. Having Kevin De Bruyne supplying you helps, too, of course.

Beyond that, these are probably not the names you expected. We're still very early into the season, though, and these could change completely after another matchday. Still, some encouraging signs for a few players – notably Nicolas Jackson, who only has the one goal so far.

Who is the most clinical striker in the Premier League?

Brighton striker Evan Ferguson.

This one measures how well a player is scoring against what's expected. In other words, these players have more goals than their chances statistically suggest they should.

Early on in the season, it's easy to inflate this one. Score a lucky hat trick, and you'll be massively outperforming – but unlikely to sustain it.

Odsonne Édourard is one to mention. He's got one of the highest total xG scores in the league right now – and is still outperforming it. That reads very positively for Crystal Palace fans.

Evan Ferguson is certainly another to watch this season. The young Brighton striker impressed last season and has a hat trick already this time out. If he can continue to perform in and around his xG, Ferguson will dramatically increase his stock over the course of the campaign.

Quite simply, the number of assists by strikers this season. An assist is a pass that leads directly to a player scoring.

This one is a little messy. Julián Álvarez, for instance, has played as an attacking midfielder at times this season. Jean-Phillipe Mateta, quite ridiculously, is yet to even start in the Premier League.

This is another that could change quite dramatically, then, as certain players cement their positions and others get more time on the pitch. For now, though, here are your leaders.

Which Premier League striker creates the most?

Player

Key passes

Julián Álvarez

Ollie Watkins

The big difference between this and assists is that it doesn't rely on anyone else. After all, you could create a dozen chances per game but if your teammate can't finish, you won't get any assists. Key passes, then, shows just how many times a player has set up a teammate for a shot.

Julián Álvarez clearly dominates this one, but again, he's played a little bit deeper this season. We might be moving him off the list soon.

Outside of that, it's clear that taller, physical strikers are generating chances. Ollie Watkins, Erling Haaland and Taiwo Awoniyi all fit that mould and all look creative right now. It's also worth noting that both Watkins and Awoniyi appear on the top assist list – something Haaland doesn't quite manage. Of course, there are two ways to read that – either the chances Haaland creates aren't as good, or the players just aren't finishing them.

Then there's Son Heung-min – another playing multiple positions. Tottenham Hotspur are trying him more centrally this season, though, and he's contributing a lot in response. If he cements himself as a striker, we expect him to feature on plenty of these stats going forward.

Shot-creating actions, or SCAs, are any contribution by a player that goes on to create a shot within two more actions. It sounds more complicated than it is – basically, anything you do that leads to someone shooting. That could be the pass or dribble before someone else makes an assist. It could be a shot that's saved by the goalkeeper but a teammate has a rebound.

Everton's new signing, Beto leads the way heading into this weekend. Now, this is judged per 90 minutes, so the player benefits from not having played that much. He's managed to be involved in 10 shots, though – from passing, shooting or taking players on.

Danny Welbeck is proving to be a creative force for Brighton, too. His passes have led to 11 shots, a massive number given he's played a little over half the total possible minutes.

Eddie Nketiah is showing just how useful he can be at Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has his wingers playing off the forward – and it's working.

Which Premier League striker is the best dribbler?

Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

This is a fairly easy one to grasp – the number of times a player has successfully dribbled past their defender. It's a fantastic way of breaking down a defence and something counter-attacking sides rely on from their usually sole striker.

That's certainly reflected here. Wolves, Chelsea, West Ham United and Newcastle United all look to break quickly with what is usually a lone striker.

Matheus Cunha is the standout in terms of numbers but it's actually Michail Antonio that we'll focus on. The West Ham striker has been successful with 69% of his take-on attempts, more than any of the others mentioned. To hit that mark with nine successes is simply fantastic.

A primeira metade
O Fortaleza fez valer o fator casa no primeiro tempo do confronto no Castelão.

Lloyd puts Glamorgan in Severn heaven

David Lloyd’s career-best has given Glamorgan an excellent chance of victory in the Severnside derby

ScorecardA career best century from David Lloyd has left Glamorgan in pole position going into the final day of their Specsavers County Championship game against Gloucestershire, in Bristol.Having started the day 60 runs ahead of Gloucestershire’s first innings total of 236, and with five first innings wickets in hand, the Welsh county reached 526 for 9 before captain Michael Hogan declared.By the close, Gloucestershire, who have been outplayed for long periods of the game, still required another 157 to avoid an innings defeat.Unless rain intervenes, Glamorgan look well set to kick off their four-day season with an emphatic victory over their Severnside neighbours.Lloyd’s innings was measured throughout. On a wicket that has favoured the batsmen for the best part of two and a half days, he was rarely troubled as Glamorgan dominated the third day much as they had the first and second. To their credit, Gloucestershire worked hard to extract some movement from the pitch, throughout a morning session that saw just two wickets fall. Chris Cooke departed for 43 and Andrew Salter for four as Glamorgan reached the lunch interval on 408 for 7.Having chosen to bat with due care and attention before the break, Lloyd and eighth wicket partner Marchant de Lange, changed tack after lunch and began to press home Glamorgan’s advantage.Lloyd, who passed 50 off 85 balls with nine fours, showed no mercy and reached three figures with two boundary fours and a maximum. It was a fine effort from the 25-year-old North Walian who is fast approaching 2000 first class runs.Having looked indomitable, Lloyd finally departed for 119, caught behind by Gareth Roderick off the bowling of Benny Howell at 496 for 8. His 160-run partnership with de Lange, eclipsed the previous best eighth wicket stand against Gloucestershire, held by current coach Robert Croft and Mark Wallace, at Cheltenham, in 2010.De Lange, who took five Gloucestershire wickets on day one, carried on where Lloyd left off and brought up his own half century off 73 balls. Shortly after, Hogan declared with Glamorgan 290 runs to the good.Desperate to make a good start, Gloucestershire suffered two early blows in the 35 minutes before tea. Lukas Carey, who looks a decent prospect, sent back Howell for six and Roderick for four as the host county were reduced to 18 for 2.Chris Dent followed after tea, caught by Salter of de Lange’s bowling, for 12, leaving James Bracey and Jack Taylor to stop the rot. They did just that for an hour before Taylor (29) top edged a rising delivery from de Lange to the diving Kiran Carlson, at pointGraeme van Buuren followed at 84 for 5, as de Lange struck once again, leaving James Bracey and Ryan Higgins to see Gloucestershire through to the close without any further setbacks.

'I have come to terms with everything' – Smith

Langer: Ball-tampering mistakes can be forgiven

Steven Smith is back in Australia and feels it is “time to get back into it”. Smith posted a picture of himself with his fiancee Dani Willis and their dog Charlie on Instagram along with a message thanking people for their support. The former Australia captain had broken down crying when talking about his role in the ball-tampering scandal in March, but the six weeks that have now passed since the incident in Cape Town have helped him “come to terms with everything.””The amount of emails and letters I have received has been incredible and I have been extremely humbled by the enormous amount of support you have given me. I now have a lot to do to earn back your trust. To my Mum, Dad and Dani, you have been my rock through this and I can’t thank you enough. Family is the most important thing in the world and I thank you for your love and support.”There was little of that from the public, however, in the immediate aftermath of the news that Australia had cheated in an effort to gain reverse swing, and that the captain had been involved. There was pressure from the Prime Minister downwards on Cricket Australia to take definitive action and the board responded by stripping Smith of his captaincy and banning him from playing cricket for a year. David Warner received the same sentence for his involvement while the man who rubbed sandpaper on the ball, Cameron Bancroft, was suspended for nine months. After the three men were told to return home early, the Australian Cricket Association suggested that their punishment was disproportionate to the crime. CA chief executive James Sutherland said the sanctions had to be severe because of the damage done the reputation of Australian cricket. But the wider cricket community were a lot more sympathetic.Australia’s new coach Justin Langer, who was appointed on Thursday following Darren Lehmann’s resignation, has thrown the door open for Smith, Bancroft and Warner to return to the fold. “Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith, literally besides Mike Hussey, love the game more than anyone I know,” Langer had said. “They are cricket tragics, and they’re great kids. That’s why it was such a surprise they made the mistake they did. Davey Warner is the same. He’s a really good young bloke, he made a mistake. I love the way he plays his cricket. Has he got areas to get better at? Yep. Has Steve Smith? Yep. Has Cameron Bancroft? Yep. Every single person in Australian cricket? Yep. If we can keep mentoring and helping them and they want to get better and meet the standards of the Australian cricket team of course they will be welcomed back.”Smith and Warner will only be available to play for Australia in April 2019, about two months out from the World Cup. Bancroft, meanwhile, will be eligible by January 2019.

Faster than Salah: Liverpool eyeing move to sign "interesting" player

Liverpool could have to replace Mohamed Salah in the near future, and they are interested in signing someone even faster than him, according to a fresh transfer update.

Could Salah leave Liverpool in 2024?

The time will come when the Reds have to find a successor for Salah, who is out of contract at Anfield in the summer of 2025. There was a huge amount of interest in him during the summer transfer window, with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad seeing a £150m bid rejected, but there is every chance that they could be back in for him in 2024.

At that point, the 31-year-old will only have a year remaining on his deal, so Liverpool will know that it may well be the last opportunity to earn enormous money for him, while a move away could even appeal to the player himself. Replacing Salah may prove to be an almost impossible task for FSG and Jurgen Klopp, should he move on at the end of the season, but it looks as though one new attacker is being lined up at Anfield.

taiwo-awoniyi-mohamed-salah-liverpool-transfer-opinion-premier-league

Liverpool line-up speedster to replace Salah

Speaking to Caught Offside [via Empire of the Kop], journalist Christian Falk claimed that young Hoffenheim winger Maximilian Beier is seen as a potential signing by Liverpool, labelling the player as "interesting".

"Another name on Liverpool’s list is Maximilian Beier of Hoffenheim – I heard he’s definitely on the list, as he brings something that’s very interesting for Liverpool! His high speed this season was 35.45kmph.

"It’s also really good for Germany; he’s the second-fastest German player behind Leroy Sane. His contract at Hoffenheim runs until 2025 and I heard he has a release clause; he’ll be a little bit more expensive for English clubs but for German clubs he’ll only cost €20m. So you see, Liverpool are looking around at the Bundesliga again.

"He’s a player you can educate, fast, can play as a striker as well as on the wings, which would be beneficial for Liverpool’s rotations in the forward line. I think he’s interesting. He could be the next German national player, perhaps not in the coming matches, but he’ll be in the national team.

"He’s not very expensive, which would fit into Liverpool’s business model. Keep in mind, though, that Brentford and Everton’s interest in the player is concrete."

In truth, the hope is that Salah remains at Liverpool beyond this season and also 2025, considering the Egyptian King is still a world-class player who could be at the top well into his 30s. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but Beier could certainly be an intriguing option as a long-term successor.

Ibrahima Konate

Mohamed Salah

The 20-year-old has been hailed for the "dynamism" that he possesses by Hoffenheim head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo recently, and he is actually even faster than Salah, having clocked a speed of 35.45km/h, as Falk mentioned, compared to the Egyptian's tally of 33.9mk/h.

Granted, Beier is still a raw player who is learning his trade at the top level, but he looks to have the right qualities to be a great fit at Liverpool, already scoring six goals in 18 appearances for Hoffenheim, and once in two caps for Germany's Under-21s, making this one to watch.

ASSEGURANDO A VITÓRIA

Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid ensure Australia end tour winless

Australia’s captain threatened to turn the game with an onslaught against Moeen Ali but he became Adil Rashid’s third wicket and England closed out the win

The Report by George Dobell27-Jun-2018
Live scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJos Buttler thumped the fastest half-century in his nation’s T20I history to help England withstand a brilliant innings from Aaron Finch and record another resounding victory against Australia at Edgbaston. The result, coming on the heels of England’s 5-0 victory in the ODI series, means Australia have lost all six international fixtures as part of their tour to England and Wales. They depart for a tour of Zimbabwe on Thursday.Buttler, promoted to open the innings after an excellent end to his IPL season in the same position, thrashed 50 from just 22 balls as England posted the second-highest total in their 101-match T20 history. Their highest T20I score remains the 230 made against South Africa in Mumbai in 2016, while the previous record for fastest half-century was 23 set by Ravi Bopara.Even by the standards of these punch-drunk days, when England seem to set new batting records by the week and feats we once thought impossible have become commonplace, Buttler’s batting here was remarkable. The speed of the hands, the range of strokes, the power and timing combined leave little margin for error for bowlers and make perfectly respectably-sized boundaries appear impossibly small. As early as the fourth over here, he followed a six over long-on with a ramped four from the next delivery and then produced what was basically a cross-court winner that would have pleased Roger Federer. The over cost 23 and set the tone for an unhappy evening for the bowler, Kane Richardson. For it was Richardson, on the long-off boundary, who spilt a simple chance offered by Jason Roy when the batsman had 27, Richardson who allowed Alex Hales a two with a misfield and Richardson who conceded 59 from his four overs; the second most expensive analysis in Australia’s T20I history. Later – inevitably, really – he came to the crease in an impossible position and slogged his first ball to mid-off.Partly due to Richardson’s slip in the field, Roy – who made 44 from 26 balls – helped Buttler post 95 for the first wicket (England’s sixth-highest opening stand in this form of the game) with 70 of them coming in the six-over Powerplay. With Hales following up with 49 from 24 balls – for a while it seemed he would break Buttler’s new record – and Jonny Bairstow underlining the depth of England’s batting by driving his first and final deliveries for six, England easily reached 200 for the first time in a home T20.It was clear from the first ball that this was to be a trying night for the bowlers. The ease with which Roy caressed the opening delivery of the match to the midwicket boundary spoke volumes for the nature of the surface: the sort of wicket of which batsmen dream and bowlers shiver. The over cost 13 and, when Mitchell Swepson, the debutant legspinner was introduced, Buttler immediately came down the pitch and, having first smeared him through mid-wicket for a boundary, then deposited him over long-on for six.Later Billy Stanlake missed his attempted yorker by an inch or two and Buttler, stepping back to give himself room, drove over extra cover for 6. It was a shot that would have pleased Viv Richards. Buttler’s 50 contained six fours, four sixes and four singles. And not once did he play and miss. With Australia losing five wickets in the first 10 overs of their innings, it seemed they were heading to a heavy defeat. But Finch had other ideas and, after being starved of the strike for much of the opening overs – he faced only 19 balls in the first 54 – launched an assault on Moeen Ali’s offspin that threatened to turn the game.Demonstrating awesome power, he deposited Moeen for five sixes and three fours – most of them over midwicket – as he added 86 in seven overs for the seventh-wicket with Ashton Agar. But Adil Rashid, who bowled 11 dot balls, and took three wickets kept his head and had Finch caught on the long-on fence by Chris Jordan. And with nobody else in the top six making 20, England’s total always looked just out of reach. Australia went down swinging, bowled out with two balls remaining. It was a good night, too, for Jordan. Having produced a well-disguised slower-ball to defeat Glenn Maxwell, he showed good pace and control of his yorker to end Agar’s resistance. He remains England’s outstanding fielder, too.For Australia there was some fine bowling from AJ Tye – who conceded just three from the fifth over of the innings and a respectable eight from the last – while Agar and Finch can also look back on this game with some pride. But losing all six internationals against the old enemy must rank this as one of the worst tours an Australian team has ever had to England.
