Leeds: Farke’s surprise Cooper heir could be his "clever" 6 ft 1 signing

The international break is well underway and a number of Leeds United players have been in action for their respective countries over the last few days.

It has been an opportunity for some of the club's squad options to get some much-needed minutes away from Elland Road in order to stay match fit and give Daniel Farke a reminder of what he has at his disposal ahead of their clash with Norwich next weekend.

One player who may have given the German head coach something to think about is Bulgaria international Ilia Gruev, who lined up at centre-back against Lithuania on Saturday.

How many games has Gruev played for Leeds?

The summer signing from Werder Bremen has made three substitute appearances for the Whites so far this season and is yet to make his full debut.

He is a central or defensive midfielder by trade but his outing for Bulgaria as a centre-back suggests that he is also comfortable in defence, which is something that Farke could look to explore.

Gruev lined up on the left of the defence, despite being right-footed, and could, therefore, develop into a surprise heir to 32-year-old Leeds captain Liam Cooper, whose contract expires next year, instead of working his way into the midfield set-up.

Could Gruev replace Cooper for Leeds?

The Bulgaria international has strong defensive instincts and could eventually replace the Scottish defender at Elland Road if Farke unleashes him as a centre-back and helps the ace to utilise his impressive skills in defence.

Gruev made 2.5 tackles and 1.25 interceptions per 90 in the Bundesliga for Bremen last season, which placed him within the top 26% of his positional peers respectively.

That came after he managed 2.64 tackles and 1.58 interceptions per 90 for the German side during the 2. Bundesliga campaign the previous year, which ranked him within the top 12% of players in his position.

The 23-year-old battler also ranked above average for Bundesliga midfielders for blocks (1.31) and clearances (1.19) per 90 last term.

Former Werder Bremen midfielder Ilia Gruev.

These statistics show that Gruev, who his former coach Ole Werner dubbed "clever", is an excellent defensive option in midfield who is able to make multiple vital interventions per game to cut out opposition attacks.

Cooper, meanwhile, has made 1.8 tackles and interceptions combined and made 1.4 clearances per game across five Championship outings this term.

Leeds defender Liam Cooper.

The Scotland international, who has completed 89% of his attempted passes this season, turns 33 next year and it remains to be seen whether or not Leeds are prepared to extend his current deal.

If Farke and the club opt against a new contract for Cooper then a place in the squad as a centre-back to challenge Pascal Struijk for the position on the left of the defensive pairing could be up for grabs.

Gruev's strong defensive qualities suggest that he has the raw tools to be utilised as a superb option at the back and his display for Bulgaria shows that the 6 foot 1 enforcer is willing and able to play in that role.

Chelsea must move Disasi aside to unleash their "incredible" 5 ft 10 dynamo

Under Mauricio Pochettino's expert guidance at the helm – the Argentine manager who was successful with the club's London rivals – Chelsea were expected to turn the tide and put the woes of last season behind them.

Yet, with a multitude of new signings to contend with, the inconsistencies in performance that saw the Blues finish in a disastrous 12th spot last campaign are rearing their ugly head once more even with Pochettino in the dug-out instead of an underperforming club legend in Frank Lampard.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

An encouraging display against Arsenal – the Gunners salvaging a share of the points in the end at Stamford Bridge in a 2-2 contest – was then followed up with an abject home display versus Brentford with Thomas Frank's Bees winning 2-0 at the expense of a toothless Chelsea side.

Registering just two shots on target in that lunchtime kick-off, Pochettino will be scratching his head at his side and assessing what he can change to conjure up more consistent displays from his group and get more wins on the board.

The Argentine head coach could well look to Reece James as a way to add more creativity to his side, the wing-back battling with his fitness for some time now but he could be devastatingly effective if called upon fully fit.

This could however, in tow, see the likes of summer signing Axel Disasi reverted back to a familiar centre-back position after playing there against Brentford or ditched completely for James to come back in and make that spot his own again.

Axel Disasi's performance against Brentford

Signed from Monaco for £38.57m in a transfer window that saw the Blues go overboard with new faces, Disasi has shown glimpses of promise in a Chelsea shirt so far.

Switched to a right-back slot against Brentford, usually operating as a centre-back, he was largely ineffective in an unorthodox role – leaving the field of play in the 67th minute after only registering 69 touches of the ball per FBRef, rarely involving himself in the attack to aid his impotent side, with zero key passes to his name.

This shows that he was not able to provide a burst of attacking quality from that position, which played a part in the Blues' lack of action at the top end of the pitch.

axel-disasi-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

Given 23 minutes in place of the ex-Monaco man, James should comfortably come back into the first team when fully fit and show everyone what they have been missing out on since he's been sidelined with reoccurring injury knocks – James once an integral part of the Chelsea jigsaw, key to success under Thomas Tuchel.

Why Reece James could improve Chelsea

As much as Chelsea want to show off their new, expensive buys, results are what are more paramount at this current point in time.

Slotting James back into the line-up would still allow Chelsea to utilise their exciting plethora of talent purchased this summer, alongside having an experienced Premier League player charging down the flanks to attempt to make the Blues more incisive and add verve to their game overall.

Chelsea'sReece James

James' stats for Chelsea speak for themselves, especially his output during the 2021-22 campaign for the Blues – registering nine assists in total domestically, whilst helping to a single goal in the Champions League as the West Londoners crashed out in the quarter finals.

Labelled as an "incredible footballer" by football journalist Adam Newson at the peak of his powers, everyone at Chelsea will have their fingers crossed that the 5 foot 10 dynamo can replicate his best against at Stamford Bridge and help his team become more ruthless in attack with an added threat down the channels.

There is still time for the Blues to find a solution to their continuing woes, and in James, they might well have find one potential remedy.

The England international has averaged at least 1.3 key passes per game in each of the last three full Premier League seasons and could, therefore, provide far more creativity than the naturally defensive Disasi did on the right flank.

Pochettino must finally unleash James from the start for the first time since August and move the former Ligue 1 man to the side, at centre-back or on the bench, to do so.

Felipe Rodrigues explica invencibilidade do Novorizontino: 'Trabalho sério desde o Paulista'

Imran Khan opts for "austere" inauguration, ruling out Gavaskar, Kapil's presence

Desire for austere ceremony has ruled out the fascinating prospect of Indian cricketing royalty’s presence for Imran Khan’s inauguration

Plans to invite foreign dignitaries, including some of India’s greatest cricketers, to Imran Khan’s impending inauguration as Prime Minister of Pakistan have been shelved. Fawad Chaudhry, the spokesperson for the party Imran heads, said Imran had ultimately decided on a “simple ceremony” that would include just a few of his close friends. That was a 24-hour turnaround in which Imran’s party had first floated the tantalising possibility of the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev flying in for the inauguration. Chaudhry had confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that enquiries had been made of the Foreign Office to see if foreign delegates could be invited to the oath-taking ceremony. Those in line for invitations to the event included Gavaskar and Kapil, contemporaries of Imran in his cricketing heyday, as well as Navjot Sidhu. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi was also in the frame for an invitation, but the change of stance today means those high-profile guests from across the border will not attend.”The PTI chairman [Imran Khan] has directed us to stage the oath-taking event with austerity,” Chaudhry told . “He will take his oath in a simple ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr (President House). It has been decided that no foreign personalities will be invited to the ceremony — it will be a completely national event. Only a few close friends of Imran Khan will be invited. There will be no show of extravagance at the event.”Imran, whose party the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) won the most seats in the country’s general elections last week, is effectively Pakistan’s Prime Minister-elect, with his inauguration likely to be days away. His decision to invite cricketers who were among the biggest rivals of his career appeared to be, prima facie, an extension of the agreeable tone he struck towards India in his unofficial acceptance speech following the elections.Imran has enjoyed convivial relations with most of his contemporaries across the border. When he was an opposition leader in Pakistan’s parliament in 2016, he was a high-profile attendee in Kolkata for the India-Pakistan game at the World T20, and was part of an entertaining evening after-dinner talk on a panel that also included Kapil. The pair were two of the great quartet of allrounders that dominated the game in the 1980s, alongside Ian Botham and Richard Hadlee.Kapil was among the first from the cricketing fraternity to send his congratulations to Imran following his party’s victory, saying it “felt really good” to see a cricketer he had played alongside become Prime Minister of his country. Sidhu was particularly effusive in his praise of Imran following the election, calling him a “pure soul who led from the front”.Long-suffering fans across both sides of the border may have drawn a flicker of hope from this recent outpouring of warmth for the India-Pakistan on-field rivalry, currently on hold by factors unrelated to cricket. Political tensions have meant the two countries haven’t played any bilateral cricket since Pakistan toured India in 2012 for two T20Is and three ODIs, while the last time they clashed in a Test match was back in 2007. Of the Indian side currently playing the first Test against England at Edgbaston, only two players – Dinesh Karthik and Ishant Sharma – have played a Test against Pakistan. India and Pakistan will clash in the Asia Cup in the UAE in September. The last time Gavaskar toured Pakistan as a cricketer also had heavy political overtones. It was the ill-fated tour of 1984, which saw an ODI between Pakistan and India in Sialkot cancelled halfway through after news broke of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination, with the tour immediately called off. Gavaskar was never to play in Pakistan again.*Aug 2, 1215 GMT: The piece was edited to reflect the fact that Imran Khan decided against a lavish oath-taking ceremony, effectively ruling out the possibility of Kapil Dev and Sunail Gavaskar’s attendance at his inauguration.

Arsenal still eyeing move to sign "great" player for Arteta; scouts sent

Credit where it's due, Arsenal have once again got off to a flying start in the Premier League to put to bed any doubts that last season could have been a one off. Mikel Arteta has transformed the Gunners from lost failures into serious title challengers – the job that the Spaniard has done so far has been impressive.

The North London side have also improved off the pitch, with their transfer business ending in success more often than not, putting to bed the era of transfer flops that included the likes of Nicolas Pepe. Instead, this is the era of impactful additions, and that could include the potential arrival of one particular Turkish Super Lig player.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners spent well in the summer, refusing to take their foot off the gas ahead of their return to the Champions League this season. In the end, Arsenal's summer spending reached as much as the €235m (£205m) mark, and Arteta has been rewarded for his club's spending ever since.

With a long title race ahead, too, Arsenal could yet return to the transfer market when the January window opens, with the latest Sacha Boey transfer news suggesting that he could be among their targets. According to Fotospor, the Gunners have sent scouts to watch the right-back in Galatasaray's recent defeat over Besiktas.

Boey, of course, was the subject of Arsenal transfer interest throughout the summer, with reports in Turkey claiming that the Premier League giants made a £12m bid for the full-back, who had an asking price of £17m, leaving Arsenal to pursue and seal a deal for Timber instead. As Timber recovers from an ACL injury, however, the Gunners may need another right-back, which has seemingly turned their attention back to Galatasaray and Boey.

Sacha Boey's stats

So far this season, Boey's stats prove just how important he is for Galatasaray these days. The 23-year-old has started in every single game for Okan Buruk's side this season, who have even got a win at Old Trafford against Manchester United under their belt.

It's no surprise, given his importance, that Boey has been at the centre of praise during his time in Turkey, including from former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna, who said: "Galatasaray’s Sacha Boey is a player I really like. I think he will fit perfectly into Arsenal. As a right-back too, I have to say I think he’s great. I’m sure many clubs have Sacha Boey in mind.“There is a contract to sign.”

Whilst Timber remains on the sideline, it could be a wise move from Arteta to secure another right-back option, creating plenty of competition for both Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu. As the Champions League fixtures begin to come thick and fast, too, and injuries inevitably fall the way of those at The Emirates, the greater squad depth that Arsenal have, the better that they may cope.

O novo treinador passou a comandar o dia a dia do Alvinegro desde o último sábado, dando o primeiro treinamento no campo anexo do Estádio Nilton Santos.

Surrey conjure up their own bleary summer euphoria

England’s football team are out of the World Cup and the cricketers had just had a pasting by India, but 25,000 managed to forget all that at Kia Oval

Aaron Finch made an impressive return•Getty Images

ScorecardIt may not have been worth throwing a pint in the air for (at least not when they cost £5), but there was a familiar sense of high-summer euphoria to be experienced at The Oval as Surrey got their Vitality Blast campaign up and running with a win at the third attempt. England’s footballers are out of the World Cup, and their cricketers being dealt a reality check by India, but there are still beery, bleary fun-times to be had down in Kennington.Little more than a week after striking a T20 international record of 172 from 76 balls in Harare, Aaron Finch flew in to blow away Surrey’s troubles. He only made 58 from 33 this time, but right from the start his presence seemed to send adrenalin coursing through Surrey veins on the way to their second-highest T20 score; Varun Chopra struck a more stately 67 off 46 to keep Essex in with a chance of pulling off a record chase, but they fell away as the asking rate became ever-more vertiginous.Surrey know how to do the Blast justice, packing in the Thursday and Friday crowds for a night on the sherbet. They even produce their own in-house coverage, never mind whether Sky are in town, to give spectators the full experience: cue delirious big-screen footage of punters taking “Kia catches” worth £1000, and regular appearances of the “Floss cam” (a dance to ask your kids about, but not try).Talking T20 Podcast

This week Dan Norcross is joined by David Hopps to debate world records feats in the Vitality Blast from Ed Pollock, Joe Denly and (nearly) Dan Christian and still finds time to discuss carrots with Isabelle Westbury.

Finch is appropriately named, so fond is he of going aerial. Dedicated twitchers would doubtless identify him as a particularly aggressive breed of bullfinch, chest puffed out and plumage proud. Those watching the London skies for the Baby Trump blimp – or the version of Sadiq Khan being proposed by a rival group of activists – might be just as likely to catch sight of Finch’s range-hitting; though Surrey are off down to Hove on Friday, so their overseas batsman is unlikely to cause a diplomatic incident.Having only stepped off a plane a couple of days ago, Finch was quick to take flight once again. His second ball, bowled by Sam Cook, was clubbed unceremoniously towards cow corner; his fourth went even further, straight into the crowd at long-on for the first six of the night. Sixteen runs came from Cook’s over – Rory Burns had already taken 12 off Jamie Porter – as a Finch-inspired Surrey set about giving another roistering full house of nearly 25,000 plenty to cheer about. That included a drop from the first ball of the fourth over, as Finch swatted Porter straight to Matt Coles at deep square leg, only for him to misplace a desperate juggle. It was to be a costly error – though not as costly, for Surrey’s main sponsor, as some of the catching in the crowd.Finch’s batting not only enriched the scoreboard but was a profitable enterprise for spectators: two mighty blows over long-off were taken cleanly, each doubtless worth an immediate trip to the bar. Surrey’s new toy, a £250,000 screen on the Harleyford Road side of the ground, repeatedly lit up like a fruit machine as Ben Foakes and, later, Rikki Clarke joined in the fun.The arrival of Finch, and his compatriot Nic Maddinson, from Australia duty was always likely to pep up Surrey, whose opening fixtures saw them lose tight matches to Middlesex and Kent. Maddinson fell in single-figures, skewing Porter to mid-off, but Finch and Foakes made merry during an 86-run stand for the third wicket.Essex’s seamers were bludgeoned at will, Foakes demonstrating a high front-elbow on the drive while Finch rocked back and swung for the fences. Both made rapid half-centuries – Finch from 29 balls, Foakes pretty much keeping pace off 31 – and it required some controlled bowling from Finch’s fellow Australia international, legspinner Adam Zampa, to rein things in. His analysis of 4-0-20-2 highlighted the shortcomings in the rest of the Essex attack, who conceded 202 runs from their 16 overs. Both Finch and Foakes fell hitting across the line against Zampa but, just as Essex had a sniff of keeping Surrey to under 200, the bowling disintegrated again. Clarke slapped four sixes of his own, while Ollie Pope made puckish use of his angles at the other end, reverse-sweeping for fun as 52 runs bled from the last three overs and the flamethrowers on the boundary belched with enough violence to make the press box rattle.Surrey are on the board, and with Jason Roy and the Currans to return – Tom was fit enough for an extended bat in the nets before play – they will know that qualification is still eminently achievable; after all, last year’s winners, Notts, lost their opening two games. If England’s T20 trophy is to come back to its (spiritual) home for the first time since 2003, this was a night to inspire belief.
