West Indies to play India in Florida in 2019

The matches are part of a five-year plan by Cricket West Indies to have cricket in North America every year to develop the game further

West Indies are planning to host India in Florida next July, immediately after the 2019 World Cup, as part of a long-term strategy to play a minimum of two T20Is in North America every year until 2022.”There’s full board support as part of our strategic plan over the next five years to bring regular games into the Americas,” Cricket West Indies CEO Jonny Grave told ESPNcricinfo during the Caribbean Premier League matches in Florida. “So not always talking about USA, we’re talking about Canada and other parts to try to grow the sport. The whole ICC strategic plan is around growing the game and we’re huge advocates of Associate cricket.”We want to grow the game. We’re big advocates of playing in the Olympics even though one might argue that’s quite complicated because effectively we’d be playing as the separate sovereign countries of the West Indies – but we don’t have a problem with that.”Since the USA Cricket Board is yet to be fully ratified, Grave said CWI will seek the ICC’s permission directly to host the matches. They are expected to be prime-time affairs, starting as late as 9pm in Florida in order to accommodate Indian television market, while also ensuring the comfort of the people coming to the stadium. The T20Is between India and West Indies from two years ago were played at 10.30 am under heat that Grave felt was “unbearable”.”That would be our aim,” Grave said. “Clearly we have to discuss that with sponsors and broadcast partners, but realistically when you’re playing India in the Caribbean you have to play either very late at night or very early in the day. If you’re playing India, the passion of the India fans, they’ll turn up whether you play at 11am or 9pm at night.”England are touring the Caribbean from January to March 2019 and sources in Florida suggest they may also play some T20Is at Central Broward stadium. Grave, however, wasn’t very keen on relocating these matches.”England fans love coming to the Caribbean,” he said. “Even though we have a big England tour of three Test matches, five ODIs and three T20Is, that would be a big decision to take matches out of the region, whereas the traveling India fan is [coming from the USA] and it’s a growing market so it’s less of a risk to our region to have the England games in the Caribbean and the India matches [in Florida].”India and West Indies have already played at the venue earlier•Getty Images

India will start their 2019 tour with T20Is at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, before travelling to the Caribbean to play ODIs and Tests. According to the FTP, New Zealand (2020), South Africa (2020) and Pakistan (2021) are also scheduled to tour the region while India will visit again in 2022. Bangladesh have already come and gone. The PCB and CWI had tentatively agreed to play T20Is in Florida after the West Indies toured Pakistan this past April, but Grave said finding a window outside the FTP has been difficult. When asked if a tri-series in Florida would be possible involving Pakistan and India, he said that playing that many matches at the same venue could be problematic.Mid-week games scheduled in Lauderhill have had notoriously poor attendance. When Sri Lanka and New Zealand played the first T20Is on US soil in May 2010, the series, originally scheduled for three games, was reduced to a two-match weekend only affair since only 200 tickets were sold for a fixture on a Thursday. However, Grave indicated that in the future West Indies would be open to playing T20Is against Canada or USA on weekdays as build-up to matches against Full Member sides on weekends.Meanwhile, CWI extended an annual invitation for USA and Canada to play in the Regional Super50 competition, which begins in October, with Grave also hoping the women’s teams from both countries would be open to playing domestic cricket in the West Indies.”We’re not here to make a fast buck, that’s probably the bottom line,” he said. “This isn’t just about economics. This is a five-year plan and in five years we think we can start to make a difference to support USA and Canada and that’s just the next two best teams in the Americas.”We want to develop cricket in the whole region, but the next two sides have the ability to break into the 16-team T20 World Cup. Through CPL, playing in our Under-19 tournament, the Super50 and making sure this stadium maintains its status as an international ground can only help USA Cricket. We’ve been pretty vocal and been big advocates about how good the quality of the cricket was in the World Cup Qualifiers and how we need to expand the game and not shrink the game.”CWI had also played a part in helping Canada run their Global T20 tournament in June and July.

Reporter hints "high-profile" Leeds United star could leave in January

Leeds United could have a tough time keeping hold of one of their star men after one journalist has hinted that he could leave Elland Road in the New Year.

Leeds United updates…

Last weekend, Leeds continued their strong start to the campaign under Daniel Farke by defeating lowly Huddersfield Town 4-1 at Elland Road courtesy of two doubles from Daniel James and Crysencio Summerville. Maintaining their grip on third place in the Championship, the Whites have lost just once in their last five games in the division and are continually resembling a genuine contender to gain promotion from the English second-tier at the first time of asking.

Cited by Leeds Live, Farke signalled his delight at being able to get one over a Yorkshire rival alongside praising his players' spirit for reacting to their defeat to Stoke City last midweek with a comprehensive victory. He stated: "First of all, I think you could see how much it's meant to my players today,” a beaming Farke said after the game. Firstly to win the local derby and the second to show reaction to a bit disappointing result at Stoke and we did this in the perfect manner."

Farke then added: "It was an electrifying first half with some unbelievable offensive work, we were all over them and created so many chances. Was not perfect because of the beginning I also got the feeling, a bit like in last weeks we don't make enough out of our dominance and creating situations but if you’re 4-0 up at half-time, you can't complain too much about this."

Nevertheless, one sour note from the affair has been picked up on by Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Graham Smyth, who has detailed that Leeds star Wilfried Gnonto headed straight down the tunnel upon the full-time whistle against Huddersfield despite featuring as a second-half substitute during the encounter. Now, journalist Dean Jones has given an update on Gnonto and where his future could lie once the January transfer window begins to get underway.

Wilfried Gnonto transfer update

In a conversation with GiveMeSport, Jones has indicated that Gnonto could be one to watch in January after he previously attracted interest during the summer from the Premier League.

"I think they want to try and keep things as settled as they can going into the second half of the season. I mean, the Gnonto one is obviously going to be the most high-profile one to look out for. We all know how close he came to trying to leave the club and wanting to leave the club in the summer window. Quite how much Leeds have managed to convince him otherwise, I guess we’ll find out in January.

"But in terms of the other players that are key to this team, I think we'll have to wait until this summer because Leeds need the bulk of this squad to stick together for now. They've got a big task on their hands to get out of the Championship and having an overhaul halfway through the season probably isn't going to help."

Gnonto, who went on strike over the summer, is a talented player who has already gone on to be a full international for Italy at 19, so it will be interesting to see where his future lies when the window opens for business in 2024.

Arsenal star just endured a "scary" nightmare on international duty

The early hours of Friday morning happened to be a proud moment for Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli.

When it's come to international football, regular chances for the tricky wide man have been hard to come by. After all, this is a young talent competing among the likes of Neymar Jr and Vinicius Jr for a place on the flanks.

However, against Colombia on Friday, he stole the show from a Selecao point of view, scoring his country's only goal in a 2-1 loss.

It's now two defeats on the spin for Brazil who are finding it difficult to live up to the hype in recent international breaks.

Martinelli's stats vs Colombia

Described as a "constant threat" in GOAL's player ratings for the game, the 22-year-old was in electric form for his nation.

Some wonderful play between Martinelli and Vinicius Jr carved open the opening with the Gunners ace finding the net in assured fashion during the first 45. It was his first goal for Brazil, and surely the first of many.

Throughout his time on the pitch, the winger barely gave Colombia a moment of peace. He completed 91% of his passes, won six of his nine duels and even found room to play a key pass. His goal, meanwhile, came from the only shot Martinelli registered all game. Clinical indeed.

However, he wasn't the only Arsenal player in action for Fernando Diniz's side. Gabriel Magalhaes was selected to play at centre-half.

Gabriel's stats vs Colombia

Earning just his fifth cap for Brazil, this should have been a special night for the defender playing alongside his club colleague.

It started off an impressive performance from the centre-back, who ended the first half with a clean sheet in tact and a pass success rate of 100%. It's a shame, therefore, that his and Brazil's performance in the second period dwindled significantly.

Indeed, it was his missed header that led to the first Colombian goal as they fought back in the second half, a looping ball swung in from the left-hand side that Luis Diaz met from close range and found the back of the net.

The second goal – again scored by Diaz – he wasn't at fault for, but Gabriel and a number of Brazilian defenders did appear to be standing in a zone where they weren't even marking anyone.

Such a display led to brutal criticism of the 25-year-old with one notable Brazilian influencer and U23 scout suggesting he has been "very poor" whenever he's pulled on the jersey.

One Brazilian news outlet went even further, taking to social media to say: "It’s genuinely scary just how bad Gabriel Magalhães has been for Brazil tonight."

GOAL happened to give the central defender a 6/10 rating, suggesting he wasn't actually the worst of the defenders, something the stats would agree with.

He ended the game with a 93% pass success rate, only misplacing five passes on the entire night and won 4/6 duels. His defensive colleague, Marquinhos, only contested three duels during the game, winning two and had less of an influence on the ball, taking 57 touches to Gabriel's 84.

To suggest the Arsenal brute was the sole reason for Brazil's defeat was harsh, although supporters back at the Emirates and indeed Mikel Arteta will be hoping that sort of night doesn't seep back into his displays at club level.

Billy Root joins Glamorgan to prove his worth

Root wants to play regularly in all three formats and Nottinghamshire’s spending splurge suggested his chances might be limited

Billy Root, brother of the England captain Joe, has left Nottinghamshire for Glamorgan in search of more playing opportunities.Root’s departure continues a huge overhaul at Nottinghamshire which has seen three top-order batsmen – Joe Clarke, Ben Duckett and Ben Slater – arrive at Trent Bridge and Riki Wessels and now Root move on.Despite having one year left to run on his current deal, Root’s playing possibilities were limited in 2018, and the influx of three highly-rated batsmen, two with perceived England potential, suggested that was unlikely to change next summer.”We’re sad to see Billy go but understand that he wants more regular playing opportunities, something which has been hard to come by over the past year,” said Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket.”He has the ability to play in all three formats, as he has shown during his time with us and I am sure he will relish his new challenge with Glamorgan.”Root made over 1000 runs in his time at the club, including centuries in both first-class and List A cricket. His 133 alongside Chris Read in the final game of the 2017 season against Sussex, helped secure promotion from Division Two of the Championship and saw the Sheffield-born batsman sign his first professional deal.Glamorgan were attracted by the fact that he averages more than 30 in all three formats – albeit only just – as they sought to address a dismal 2018 campaign in which their homegrown players were not up to the task.Glamorgan’s director of cricket, Hugh Morris, still retains faith in the advantages of giving opportunities to Welsh youngsters – indeed the Welsh Assembly expects it – and the introduction of Root is not remotely a signal that such a policy is about to be abandoned.Root in many ways is a direct replacement for Aneurin Donald, who had encouraged such optimism in Wales but whose form declined before he left for Hampshire midway through last season.”Over the course of the campaign it became apparent we needed to supplement our batting stocks and in Billy we have signed a player who is still young but has experience playing Division One cricket and is hungry to succeed,” Morris said.”He can play across all three formats which makes him an ideal signing for the club and he will be a fantastic addition to the dressing room.”

Aston Villa now willing to "break the bank" for forward likened to Salah

Aston Villa are apparently willing to "break the bank" for a club's star forward who's even been likened to Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.

Villans make January transfer plans

According to various reports in the last few weeks, Villa appear determined to strengthen their ranks in the January window as manager Unai Emery looks to mount a serious challenge to Champions League qualification.

The Midlands side appear to be very real contenders for a top-four finish, as highlighted by their electric start to the Premier League season.

Winning eight out of a possible 12 league matches, Emery's side are just three points off table-topping Man City with barely anything separating first and fifth.

If Villa wish to maintain their excellent form, though, more squad depth is perhaps needed – especially in the midfield area as Emiliano Buendia is out with a long-term injury.

Everton vs Aston Villa in the Premier League at Goodison Park in February 2023.

The Argentine was a mainstay under Emery last term, playing in all 38 of their top flight matches, but Villa may not see him return until April next year.

As a result, Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe is believed to be a target for Villa, as well as Paris-Saint Germain midfielder Carlos Soler.

However, it is also rumoured that NSWE are plotting swoops for attacking additions, with an interesting claim now made involving Genoa star Albert Gudmundsson.

Villa ready to "break the bank" for Gudmundsson

The Iceland international has been in fine form for the Serie A side over 2023/2024, scoring five goals in 12 league outings.

Gudmundsson has even attracted attention from the likes of Tottenham as a result, with Villa being no exception as they have throw their hat in the ring.

According to Calciomercato.it (via Sport Witness), Villa are ready to "break the bank" for Gudmundsson and will have no issue paying his asking price either.

The 26-year-old only penned a new contract on Friday morning, but that hasn't deterred Emery and co who are still said to be pursuing Gudmundsson.

He is said to be valued at around £17.5 million, a very affordable fee for a high-flying Premier League side like the Villans. Gudmundsson can operate in many areas across the forward line, including on the wing and through the middle as an attacking midfielder.

This season, though, manager Alberto Gilardino has utilised the Icelandic star as a second striker behind Mateo Retegui – where he has blossomed and stood out as a key player for them.

Perhaps most interestingly, Gudmundsson has drawn comparisons with Liverpool star Salah. Teammate Kevin Strootman, speaking to Il Secolo XIX newspaper (via Football Italia), likened the player to Jurgen Klopp's Egyptian superstar.

"If he keeps improving, he won’t stay at Genoa for long,” Strootman said.

“He reminds me of Salah when he was at Roma, in that every now and then he disappears. Much like Salah then, he would have four or five chances per match and only score at most one.

“They used to say that if Salah was more clinical, he would be playing for Liverpool, and that is exactly what happened. All joking aside, Gudmundsson is a devastating player and also an exemplary professional.”
