The visiting batsmen ended without a half-century between them in either innings, after Kurtis Patterson smacked his second unbeaten hundred of the match

The Sri Lankan batsmen ended the three-day practice match in Hobart without a half-century between them in either innings, as they stumbled against the left-arm spin of Jon Holland on day three. The visitors had in fact been modest the entire day, taking only one wicket in their 32.5 overs with the ball before stuttering to 131 for 6 in their second innings. Their only solace is that the their tormentors on day three – Kurtis Patterson, who cracked a second unbeaten century in the game, and Holland, who took 4 for 28 – are not in Australia’s Test squad.Only Lahiru Thirimanne, who is essentially auditioning to open alongside Dimuth Karunaratne, made a score of significance for the Sri Lankans, making 46 off 121 balls. Nos. 4 to 7 fell in fairly quick succession to Holland, with Dhananjaya de Silva and Sadeera Samarawickrama picking up their second disappointing scores in the match, making 2 and 6 respectively. What was worse for the Sri Lankans was that Roshen Silva, who was batting on 23, was forced to retire hurt.Earlier in the day, Marnus Labuschagne, who may be in Australia’s XI in the first Test at the Gabba, completed a half-century, having begun the day on 33. Lahiru Kumara dismissed him for 50 off 101 balls, but that would be the last wicket the Sri Lankans would take in the day, as Patterson struck 102 not out off 136 balls, to go with his 157 not out off 212 deliveries in the first innings. Patterson was involved in an unbroken 90-run stand for the fourth wicket, to which partner Will Pucovski’s contribution was 33 off 70.Perhaps not wanting to risk their frontline seamers, however, the Sri Lankans bowled only Kumara in extended spells on day three, with Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal and Kasun Rajitha bowled only for a handful of overs. The first Test starts on Thursday.
Tottenham Hotspur have received an enquiry to ask whether they would be willing to sell one of their loan players permanently in January, according to a reliable journalist.
Tottenham ins and outs
The Lilywhites sanctioned the sales of nine players during the previous transfer window, with four of those being on a permanent basis, while the remaining five were sent out on loan for the rest of the season in order to increase either their experience and game time or simply their price tag.
Permanent Exits
Loan Moves
Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)
Djed Spence (Leeds United)
Harry Winks (Leicester City)
Tanguy Ndombele (Galatasaray)
Davinson Sanchez (Galatasaray)
Sergio Reguilon (Manchester United)
Lucas Moura (Sao Paulo)
Joe Rodon (Leeds United)
Japhet Tanganga (FC Augsburg)
Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou also have Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Hugo Lloris and Brandon Austin who will have all reached the expiration of their deals upon the conclusion of the campaign, so they could additionally soon be heading for the exit door (Tottenham contracts).
Back in 2020, Sergio Reguilon first put pen to paper in the capital from Real Madrid, but the left-back has found it extremely difficult to nail down a place in the starting line-up since joining having only made 67 appearances over the course of the past three years (Transfermarkt – Reguilon statistics).
The Spain international has therefore been sent out on the road temporarily on two occasions, the first time being to Atletico Madrid and the most recent to Premier League rivals Manchester United, but there’s a chance that the 27-year-old’s spell could be cut short at Old Trafford.
Borussia Dortmund want Reguilon
According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Patrick Berger, Borussia Dortmund are keen on Reguilon and they have already registered their interest in him ahead of January.
“The second left-back that the black-yellows have on the note is Sergio Reguilon. The 26-year-old is currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United, but only played there once over the full 90 minutes in the Premier League.
"Interesting: Reguilon has a clause in the contract with which he can terminate the loan himself at any time. The Spaniard could become an issue in the next few days if BVB works in. Dortmund has already inquired about the player.”
Manchester United's loan defender Sergio Reguilon.
Sell "worst of the bunch" Reguilon while you have the chance
At Man United, Reguilon currently ranks as Erik Ten Hag’s 13th overall best-performing player out of 26 squad members, so he’s not quite been able to make the huge impact that he would have hoped for when deciding to leave Tottenham (WhoScored – Man United statistics).
The Madrid native, who is naturally left-footed, has also failed to record a single goal or assist during his time with the Red Devils, so considering that he hasn't proved what he’s capable of or showcased his talents when handed the opportunity to do so really says it all.
According to Spurs expert John Wenham, Reguilon is the “worst of the bunch” from Jose Mourinho's crop of players and "so average it's untrue", so the hierarchy would be making completely the right decision to sanction his sale for good while they still have a chance to earn some cash from his departure.

The board are conscious of the amount of time some players will spend away from home in the World Cup and Ashes

In the wake of Will Pucovski’s early exit from the Australian squad to better deal with his mental health issues, the Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts has revealed that the governing body will seek to extend the amount of time the families and partners of players and support staff can spend with the team during the long-haul World Cup and Ashes tour of England this year.Speaking the morning after Pucovski chose to leave the Australian squad to return home to the support network he has established after taking time out from the game for mental health reasons earlier this summer, Roberts said that CA was looking at ways of establishing more of a “home base” for the touring teams, particularly players and staff likely to be needed for both the ICC tournament and the five Tests against England to follow. The World Cup squad is set to depart for England in mid-May, with players and staff involved in both assignments not set to return home until late September following the fifth Test at The Oval, entailing a trip of more than four months. Roberts said that it was important for CA to find ways to allow the players and staff to find some semblance of normality and family connection over this long period away from home, beyond the period of about two and a half weeks in which partners and family are usually offered financial support to travel with the team.”If you look at this winter we’ll have some players who are competing in the World Cup and then the Ashes – they’ll be over there for more than four months,” Roberts told . “So we’re actually having discussions now about what can we do to establish a bit of a sense of a home base in the UK for those players and our support staff who are there for such a long time.”How can we get their families in perhaps more than we might have in previous times, because that’s going to be a really exciting period, having a World Cup and an Ashes back to back in England, it’s a once in a lifetime experience for a player or a member of our support team, but at the same time we’ve got to help manage through that process, so it’s something we’re actually talking about now.”Addressing Pucovski’s situation, Roberts said that CA needed to be conversant with the fact that similar episodes are only going to become more prevalent in sport and life in general. “Mental health and wellbeing challenges are more prevalent right across society now aren’t they and it is a rollercoaster that people suffering mental health issues are riding,” he said. “Will’s handling that really maturely and we’ve got a lot of support around him in the form of the team doctor, the sports psych with the men’s team…I’m really proud of the network we’ve now got in place.”I spoke with Will yesterday morning and he was in good spirits in that conversation but it’s really important that he and we acknowledge how he can manage those challenging times. Good on him for identifying that he was experiencing more challenges and that it would be helpful not playing in this Test now, more helpful to move away from this environment and prepare him for getting back on the field in other forms of the game in coming weeks.”Roberts also pointed to the amount of investment committed to player welfare and development under the terms of the MoU struck with the Australian Cricketers Association in 2017. “We’ve invested about AUD13 million over five years in professional development and wellbeing for players,” he said.”It’s just so important to help players manage their wellbeing and also to have something outside their cricket so in those down times, all cricketers experience the bad times as well as the good, it’s really important they’ve got something to think about to occupy their minds outside their cricket.”Australia’s coach Justin Langer, meanwhile, denied that the process of picking Pucovski so soon after he returned to the game, exposing him to the hype of international cricket and then choosing not to select him for either of the two Tests in Brisbane and Canberra, had contributed to the decision to return home early.”I don’t think that [hype then non-selection] has anything to do with it. He and I have had a lot of really good conversations,” Langer told . “There’s a lot of hype, but that’s the Australian cricket team. I’ve been fascinated by the scrutiny coming into the job, I’ve been in this business for 25 years and I’m feeling it.”I can only imagine how some of the young guys are feeling about all the scrutiny. That’s just part of the business we’re in I think it would be great experience for him to have stepped into the jungle for a couple of weeks and see what it’s like, and I’m sure in the future he’s a good young player and he’ll get another chance.””In one way it’s sad, in other ways it’s great courage for a young man. There’s a lot of talk about mental health and he’s been fantastic. He’s been with the group in the last couple of weeks, he’s a sensational young bloke, love watching him bat, he’s a gun fielder, works really hard, but he’s obviously wanting to get on top of it and he’s gone home for a few days and he’s got some Shield cricket coming up and looking forward to seeing him healthy and well. He deserves it, because he’s such a good young bloke.”
Manchester United head into the festive period full of little cheer or joy. The Red Devils now sit eighth in the league table after a hugely disappointing start to the campaign.
Erik ten Hag's side are no longer in Europe and have won just one of their last seven matches in all competitions.
If the Dutchman wasn't already feeling the pressure then he certainly will after Saturday's 2-0 defeat to West Ham.
Man Utd's replacement for Erik ten Hag could be "blindingly obvious"
This “blindingly obvious” replacement for Erik ten Hag could finally be the right man to take Manchester United forward.
ByAdam Scully Nov 14, 2023
The clock is surely quickly ticking on his time at Old Trafford but fortunately, the January transfer window has arrived at just the right time. A productive month in the market could well save United's season and indeed his job.
Man United transfer news – A midfield hunt on the way
When it comes to improving the Man United squad in January, Ten Hag should be looking to reshape most areas of his team. However, he could certainly do with some more solidity in midfield.
A move for budding Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram has been linked with the Red Devils aiming to add a bit more bite to the centre of the pitch alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Co. However, if they want to make a statement then acquiring one of the best young prospects in Europe would surely go down well.
Royal Antwerp midfielderArthur Vermeeren.
The latest on their pursuit of 18-year-old Arthur Vermeeren came a few weeks ago with reports in Spain, via Sport Witness, suggesting that Liverpool, Man United and Barcelona were battling to secure the teenager's signature from Royal Antwerp.
Any move could well be a bargain one with Vermeeren expected to earn his side around €25m (£22m) from his prospective sale in 2024.
How Arthur Vermeeren compares to Kobbie Mainoo
Ten Hag is already blessed with one of the finest young midfielders in the Premier League in Mainoo.
The teenager burst onto the scene at Goodison Park a few weeks ago as he earned his maiden Premier League start at Goodison Park. He "put on a masterclass" in the words of reporter Liam Canning, even outshining that memorable goal from Alejandro Garnacho.

However, in Vermeeren, United could arguably land a bigger and brighter talent than their current academy darling.
Why? Well, for starters, Vermeeren already has a full season of Belgium Pro League football under his belt. You may well argue that the standard isn't particularly high but let us remind you this is the league where the likes of Youri Tielemans, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne learnt their trades as young footballers.
A midfielder, the teen has been cooking up a storm in his homeland over the last 18 months, notably being described as "one of the most complete young midfielders in Europe" by scout Jacek Kulig. Fine praise indeed for a youngster who's also been noted as the 'next Andres Iniesta' in some quarters.
But how do Mainoo and Vermeeren compare? Well, they're both adept technically and possess a high amount of discipline and maturity in the centre of the park. That latter quality is hard to sum up using statistics but the rest of their respective games can be quantified nicely.

As you can see, while Mainoo is more proficient defensively, it's Vermeeren who's more likely to get on the ball and make things happen. He's truly exciting, making a remarkably high level of progressive passes per 90 minutes in comparison, supplying more balls into the final third and boasting a higher number of shot-creating actions – moments that directly lead to a shot on goal.
You may well argue that United need more high-quality experience in their team but as Mainoo has shown, if you're good enough, it doesn't matter how old you are. The thought of pairing these two players together is a mouthwatering one.

Queensland managed a small first-innings but could face a tough chase in conditions that continue to aid the bowlers

A critical unbeaten half-century from Daniel Hughes gave New South Wales a chance to put up a challenging fourth-innings total after giving up a first-innings lead to Queensland at the Gabba. The Blues began their second innings on day two 35 runs behind Queensland after the Bulls’ tail wagged courtesy of Jimmy Peirson and Mark Steketee.Hughes lost his opening partner Nick Larkin in the third over of the innings, with only five runs of the lead erased, when Michael Neser made the breakthrough having Larkin caught behind.Hughes was joined by Kurtis Patterson and the pair chipped away at the lead and put the Blues in front with a 48-run stand before Luke Feldman struck. After five wickets in the first innings, including finding the outside edge of Patterson, Feldman nipped one back off the seam from around the wicket to find Patterson’s inside edge and Peirson took an excellent catch to his right.Hughes pressed on to his 13th half-century in Sheffield Shield cricket from 137 balls. He played with the patience required in conditions that continued to swing and seam. Moises Henriques was fine support, finishing 23 not out from 60 balls to leave the Blues 68 runs in front with eight wickets in hand.Earlier, Peirson and Steketee both made 41 as the Bulls climbed out of a hole at 7 for 104 to establish a lead. The pair added 50 for the eighth wicket before the breakthrough came via the unlikely source of batsman Jack Edwards as he had Peirson caught behind for his first wicket in first-class cricket.Steketee swung hard and found the boundary five times in his unbeaten 41, his equal second-highest score in Shield cricket. He added 30 with No. 10 Feldman before Sean Abbott and Trent Copeland finished the innings with wickets in consecutive overs to bag three scalps apiece.
