Spurs lining up bid for "elite" £10m Dragusin alternative

Tottenham Hotspur have navigated away from the dark patch before the festive period and returned to form across multiple fronts, in contention for the top four in the Premier League and having advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

It certainly hasn't been plain sailing, with the Lilywhites' issues over the past few months an unfortunate by-product of the squad's certain thinness, exacerbated by the numerous absences of key players.

But manager Ange Postecoglou has posed the pertinent questions in the boardroom and Tottenham are making moves in the transfer market this month, with a surprise loan move lined up for former Chelsea forward Timo Werner.

Spurs in talks to sign £50m Werner partner who would supercharge Maddison

Ange Postecoglou’s side appear to be busy in the January transfer market.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 6, 2024

The backline remains the priority, however, and Spurs are addressing this issue and searching for the perfect new addition.

Spurs transfer news – Loic Bade

According to one Spanish news outlet, Tottenham are lining up a formal offer for Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade and could advance their interest over the coming days.

Sevilla have fallen by the wayside this year but Bade, aged 23, has been a pillar of strength in the backline, and if Postecoglou wishes to snap him up Spurs will surely need to surpass the €12m (£10m) fee paid for his services in the summer.

It's been no secret that Spurs have been pursuing a deal for Genoa's Radu Dragusin over the past few weeks but discussions have become protracted of late, with Serie A champions Napoli now allegedly looking to steal a swoop.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024 Loic Bade's style of play

Nottingham Forest signed Bade on loan from Rennes at the eleventh hour on transfer deadline day in 2022 but the Frenchman failed to make a single appearance, a victim of the Tricky Trees' bloated squad.

Joining Sevilla on an initial loan deal 12 months ago, Bade has now chalked up 43 displays for his La Liga side, and having been described as "confident and assured" by former teammate Ignatius Ganago, he is now starting to live up to such praise with some stellar showings.

As per Sofascore, Bade has impressed over his 12 matches in the Spanish top-flight this season, completing 81% of his passes, averaging two tackles, 1.5 interceptions, five ball recoveries and 4.3 clearances per game while succeeding with 64% of his contested duels – with that latter metric above Micky van de Ven (61%) this season.

The £55k-per-week ace is enterprising with his passing and this is perhaps why he is not the most accurate with his distribution, but having been described as an "elite talent" by well-regarded scout Jacek Kulig, it's clear that he a move to a team like Tottenham could take him to that next level.

An energetic and tenacious player, Bade also ranks among the top 16% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles made per 90, as per FBref, underpinning that robustness that has urged Postecoglou and Spurs technical director Johan Lange to line him up as an alternative to Dragusin.

On that earlier point of passing accuracy, Dragusin has only completed 83% of his passes in Italy this year and is considered an excellent prospect; with Sevilla and Genoa fighting deeper down their respective tables than Tottenham, who are steeped in fluidity and crispness in possession, it is difficult to reach statistics of someone like Van de Ven.

One thing is certain, either target would mark a clear upgrade on Eric Dier, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign and pursued by Bayern Munich, somewhat surprisingly, having started just one Premier League match all season.

It's clear that Dragusin is Tottenham's number one target and that's fine; he's a great defender. But Bade is proving himself to be one of the best players in a rather dismal Sevilla side, and he would be a credit to Spurs blooming system under Postecoglou.

Rangers now weighing up January bid to bring new left-back target to Ibrox

Rangers are believed to be weighing up an offer to bring a player who has been hailed as a "really good athlete" to Ibrox, according to a fresh transfer update.

Rangers transfer news

Philippe Clement is likely to be eyeing up new faces during the January transfer window, with the Gers manager feeling that a few additions could end up being decisive in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Left-back has stood out as an area to improve in, especially if Ridvan Yilmaz ends up securing a move away from Ibrox before the end of the month, as has been strongly mooted in recent weeks, and numerous individuals have been thrown into the mix.

Josh Doig had emerged as a primary target in that area, with the 21-year-old continuing to impress at Hellas Verona in Italy, having joined from Hibernian after being a standout teenage player in the Scottish game at one point. Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Owen Beck has also been linked to join Rangers on loan, having returned to Anfield from a temporary stint at Dundee earlier in the campaign.

Elsewhere, Rangers are reportedly in a three-way battle to sign West Ham defender Ben Johnson, with a January exit for the 23-year-old arguably on the cards. Hearts' star striker Lawrence Shankland has also been seen as a possible target for the Gers, in what could be an eye-catching signing midway through the season.

Rangers want Cameron Pring

Focus does appear to be on the left-back situation, though, and according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon [via Ibrox News], Rangers are weighing up making a move for Bristol City left-back Cameron Pring, as Clement continues to look for a player in that position.

Pring could be exactly what Rangers are after at left-back, with the 25-year-old someone who is both experienced but also still a relatively young footballer. This season, he has started 25 of Bristol City's 27 Championship matches, chipping in with one goal and two assists, and former manager Nigel Pearson has heaped praise on him, saying:

"Maybe because of his career here so far, he’s been farmed out a number of times on loan, he’s had to work really hard to get back into the system here, but I’m really glad we’ve got him. He’s a good athlete, a really good athlete, and his pace and power is a huge asset of his. I’m pleased that he’s able to hold down a place."

Pring has now racked up a total of 90 appearances in the Championship, highlighting his experience, and his versatility is a handy weapon that he possesses, being capable of turning out at left-back, centre-back, central midfield and on the left wing.

That would immediately give Clement so many different options all over the pitch, and there is no reason why he couldn't be an important figure at Ibrox for years to come, making this one to keep an eye on.

Rob Keogh hundred gives Northants spoils in basement battle

Rob Keogh and Ben Curran put on the only partnership of substance to put Northants out of reach against their hosts

A century from Rob Keogh was the highlight as Northamptonshire defeated Midlands rivals Leicestershire more comfortably than the winning margin suggested in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon in the North Group of the Royal London Cup.Keogh’s fifth-wicket partnership of 156 with Ben Curran saw his team recover from 104 for 4 off 25.2 overs to post a record score for the Steelbacks against the Foxes in List A cricket.Leicestershire struggled throughout their reply, and there was no way back for the Foxes after Nathan Buck, a former Leicestershire player, picked up the wickets of Lewis Hill and Colin Ackermann, who had added 47 for the Foxes’ fourth wicket, in the same over, though the tail fought bravely to bring respectability to the scoreboard in the final 20 overs.Alex Wakely’s decision to bat first after winning the toss looked questionable after Northants lost two early wickets, openers Ricardo Vasconcelos bowled by a quick in-swinging delivery from left-arm seamer Dieter Klein, and Richard Levi caught at mid-off after attempting to drive a length delivery from Mohammad Abbas. It could and should have been worse for the visitors, Josh Cobb being badly dropped by Harry Dearden, on 1, and then by Ben Mike, on 2, in both cases off the bowling of the unfortunate Klein. The allrounder, formerly of Leicestershire, might also have been run out on 16, but Harry Swindells missed the stumps with Cobb well out of his ground.Wakely, by contrast, played fluently in going to 36, but missed a sweep at left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson and was given out lbw before Cobb’s luck ran out when he was on 43, Foxes triallist George Munsey taking a smart one-handed catch above his head.At 104 for 4 the innings was very much in the balance, but Keogh and Curran batted intelligently in compiling a partnership of 156 for the fifth wicket. Avoiding unnecessary risks, they worked the ball into gaps in the field and ran hard, with Keogh hitting only two fours in reaching his half-century off 56 balls, Curran four boundaries in reaching his, off 55 deliveries.Thereafter they accelerated impressively and although Curran was eventually run out for 69, Keogh’s second 50 took just 28 balls before he holed out to long-off off Abbas the ball after reaching the second List A century of his career.Leicestershire’s reply began badly. Vasconcelos took a fine catch behind the wicket, diving to his right as Dearden inside edged an inswinger from Ben Sanderson, and the Yorkshirman struck again when another full inswinger saw Munsey dismissed leg before.Mark Cosgrove, on 11, shuffled down the wicket, swung across the line at a straight delivery from Luke Procter, missed and was bowled, but Hill and Ackermann had begun to look threatening when Hill pulled a short ball from Buck straight into the hands of Brett Hutton at deep square leg.Two balls later Ackermann contrived to glove a slow leg-side bouncer from Buck, Vasconcelos diving forward to hold the catch, and though there were good late efforts from Tom Taylor, Mike and Parkinson, the Foxes never really looked capable of chasing down their target.

Conflict of interest allegation 'baseless' as CAC not permanent body – Laxman

In his affidavit to the BCCI Ombudsman, the former India batsman alleged complete lack of communication from the COA regarding the CAC’s role

PTI30-Apr-2019

BCCI

Responding to the allegation of conflict of interest against him, former India batsman VVS Laxman criticised the Committee of Administrators’ handling of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), of which he is a part, and blamed complete lack of communication from the Vinod Rai-led panel for the confusion.Laxman said the CoA had been using the CAC only for the selection of senior national coaches, despite having chalked out a broader role for the body originally.Laxman, in his official response to Justice (Retd) DK Jain, the BCCI’s ombudsman-cum-ethics officer, rebutted the allegations of conflict of interest, and stated that he was ready to “recuse” himself if found to be in a position of conflict.”On December 7, 2018, we had written to the Committee of Administrators requesting them to clarify the scope of our role and responsibilities. To this date, there has been no reply. Since no tenure had been mentioned in the letter of intent issued in 2015, it was only reasonable to expect some communication on whether the CAC was still in existence. Unfortunately that hasn’t been forthcoming,” Laxman wrote in his affidavit, which was filed through his lawyer.Laxman, along with Sachin Tendulkar, have now replied to notices served by the ombudsman following a complaint by Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association life member Sanjeev Gupta against their dual roles as mentors in IPL franchises (Sunrisers Hyderabad in Laxman’s case) and members of the CAC.”It will be worthwhile to note that the reason I agreed to be a member was because of the various inputs we were originally tasked with contributing towards the sustained growth of Indian cricket. The opportunity to be involved meaningfully in India’s climb towards becoming a cricketing superpower post retirement was privilege enough for me to turn down the offer of remuneration of being a part of CAC,” Laxman wrote in Point 3 (c) of his affidavit.”The allegation of the complainant are baseless as we are in no manner selectors of either players or coaches, and CAC is not a permanent body.”The pertinent points of his affidavit were 3 (d) and (e), where he criticised the CoA, saying that the body was never really forthcoming on the scope and role of the CAC.Laxman said the roles of the CAC, as told to him in 2015, included focusing on improving performances of the national team overseas, creating a pathway to track young cricketers’ careers from the Under-19 level to India A to the national team, managing workload for fast bowlers, means to improve the quality of Indian spinners, and education and life-skills for young cricketers. He said no such input was ever sought by the BCCI. “…none of the CAC members has (sic) been called on to give our opinion on any subjects except to be invited to be involved in the selection of national coaches and, once, the selection of junior national selectors. However, this is by no means a regular process and I am in no manner to be considered a selector.”Laxman also claimed that the CoA did not even give the three-member committee – the third member being Sourav Ganguly – enough time to confirm availability to select the women’s head coach last year.”In December 2018, we were given a little over 24 hours to confirm our availability to be on the panel to select the India women’s head coach. All three of us expressed our inability to participate in the process due to short notice and prior commitments,” Laxman said.An ad-hoc committee, comprising Kapil Dev, Shantha Rangaswamy and Anshuman Gaekwad, then selected WV Raman as the head coach.Laxman urged the ombudsman to view the “Conflict of Interest clause from the perspective of whether in the performance of my duties as a CAC member, I am being influenced by external factors”.”It is my respectful submission that when I am barely required to discharge any duties as a member of the CAC, which I wasn’t even sure existed due to the lack of communication until I received this notice, questions of any conflict of interest doesn’t arise.”

"We are in contact" – Agent admits Liverpool talks for versatile new player

Top of the Premier League and on course to reach a League Cup final, things can't get much better for Liverpool at the moment. But with the January transfer window well underway, Jurgen Klopp could still solve his defensive injury crisis with the arrival of a player that the Reds have already held talks about.

Liverpool's defensive injury crisis

After losing Joel Matip to an ACL injury which not only likely ended his season but also perhaps even his Liverpool career, with his contract due to expire in the summer, Klopp has been left with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and the young Jarell Quansah to choose from. Further injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas soon forced the Liverpool boss to shift Gomez over to left-back, however, leaving him with just three central defenders.

calum-scanlon-andy-robertson-liverpool-opinion

Given Konate's injury history at Anfield too, already missing four games this season, the Reds could do with finding another option this month. And that has seen them linked with the likes of Goncalo Inacio, Ousmane Diomande and Jean-Clair Todibo in three options that could instantly hand them a boost. Instead, though, Liverpool's attention has reportedly turned towards Feyenoord's David Hancko.

Latest Liverpool transfer news: Alisson heir identified; £85m ace on radar

Liverpool have a huge summer ahead of them following the arrival of Arne Slot – here are all the latest transfer rumours from Anfield this summer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 11, 2024

According to Branislav Jasurek, the player's agent, Liverpool are in contact about a potential deal for Hancko. Jasurek told TN: “As an agency, we are in contact not only with these two clubs (Liverpool and PSG), but also with others who are looking into David’s situation.

"I estimate that, 80 to 90 per cent, David will stay in Rotterdam, because Feyenoord is fighting for the Champions League and the people at Feyenoord know that David Hancko will be sold even in the summer. It would have to be one of the big clubs. He will certainly not go from Feyenoord, which is going to play in the Champions League, to a club that will play in the bottom half of the Premier League.”

Hancko's versatility could be key

Hancko's versatility certainly makes him an ideal option for Liverpool to turn to either in this month's transfer window or during the summer, which seems more likely given the words of Jasurek. The Feyenoord man can play as both a centre-back and left-back, meaning that Klopp would have himself another player able to provide cover in similar fashion to how Gomez's invaluable ability does.

Hancko's stats, meanwhile, represent a player at the top of his game this season, despite Feyenoord finding themselves behind in the Eredivisie title race. Here's how his numbers compare to those of Van Dijk, Gomez and Konate this season:

So, the Slovakian appears to have the ability to keep up with Liverpool's current central defenders, with his passing ability particularly impressive. Hancko's reported price tag of £39m could yet see the Reds make their move, though his agent believes a summer switch is more likely.
