Ange could end Richarlison’s Spurs career with late January move

Tottenham Hotspur have been active in the January transfer window and may yet strike again, with Ange Postecoglou searching for the formula to secure Champions League qualification come the end of the season.

By and large, the north London outfit have been excellent this season but perch outside the top four, in fifth place, after 21 matches, three points behind Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou justifiably felt that the squad's thinness called for reinforcements and he has indeed acted accordingly, with Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner augmenting the ranks earlier this month.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has been the priority target for a while now but securing his services will be no easy task for the Lilywhites, with precocious winger Antonio Nusa also being fiercely pursued before the deadline next week.

While all of this occurs, plans are judiciously being drawn up for the summer transfer window and Postecoglou is pushing for the acquisition of a truly exceptional player.

Spurs' search for a forward

According to Spanish reports, Tottenham are interested in signing Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane in what would be a stunning capture for Postecoglou's project.

That said, Liverpool and Arsenal are both named as suitors and Spurs' hopes of sealing the deal for the £86m-rated winger would inevitably hinge on qualifying for the Champions League.

samuel-iling-junior-leroy-sane-tottenham-opinion

Out of contract at the end of next season, the Germany international is said to be the perfect fit for the path Spurs are seeking under their manager, and concrete efforts could be made to bring him to the club in the summer.

Why Spurs want Leroy Sane

Sane signed for Bayern Munich in a £55m transfer from Manchester City back in 2020 and has since chalked up 47 goals and 48 assists across 160 fixtures, dazzling from both flanks throughout his trophy-laden time in Bavaria.

Tottenham have their work cut out in convincing the 28-year-old to join Postecoglou's team with vested interest from the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, but then clinching the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven last summer highlights the allure of making this move.

liverpool-leroy-sane-premier-league-transfers-mo-salah

And what a player Spurs would get their hands on, with Sane heralded as "one of the best wingers in the world" by teammate Jamal Musiala.

As per FBref, the 6-foot phenom ranks among the top 3% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 10% for shot-creating actions, the top 16% for pass completion, the top 18% for progressive carries and the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90.

Such metrics underpin the claim that he is among the pantheon of first-class wingers in the modern game, so effective with his creativity and marrying this technical prowess with raw pace and power that allows him to barge into the danger area.

This season, the £331k-per-week has posted nine goals and 11 assists across 27 outings for the dominant German champions, who do trail Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen this season, and while he hasn't scored across hisn past nine league matches, Sane has racked up eight assists in this period.

As per Sofascore, Sane has completed 85% of his passes in the Bundesliga this season and has averaged 3.2 key passes, 3.8 ball recoveries and 3.8 dribbles per game, making good on past praise that he is a "world-class" star from talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Sane also offers something that can be so important for teams fighting for success at the forefront of the Premier League: the 59-cap international has enjoyed ample success on English shores in the past, and should be able to transport his qualities to the English capital if Spurs do find success in the race for his services.

While Dejan Kulusevski occupies the right flank and is unerringly excellent in his energy and optimism for Postecoglou's side, Sane could revert to his natural left-sided attacking role at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, allowing Heung-min Son to wreak havoc from the spearhead.

This would, of course, make a regular starting berth rather hard to come by for Richarlison, but then Sane would undoubtedly be an upgrade, ruthless as that may be.

How Leroy Sane compares to Richarlison

There is probably a tacit understanding at Tottenham that Richarlison will not be the first-choice at centre-forward over the coming years.

santiago-gimenez-richarlison-tottenham-opinion

Indeed, it may well be more overt than that, with Spurs named as one of the favourites to sign prolific Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez of late.

To his credit, the dynamic Richarlison has been in fine fettle of late and has finally clicked into gear at Tottenham – awful last season, scoring once in the league, after joining from Everton for £60m – and has bagged six goals in the Premier League across as many outings.

But history would suggest that this recent purple patch will not last; the Brazilian has not surpassed 13 goals across any of his seven Premier League campaigns.

That's not to say that he can't play a role in Tottenham's future under Postecoglou's leadership, but the acquisition of Sane would knock him further down the pecking order and perhaps this is necessary to continue the strides that have been taken over the past months.

Few would argue that Son is the superior forward, and while all the data in the world could be collated to corroborate this point, just observe the South Korean in action to recognise his world-class qualities.

They are qualities that could be taken to a new level with Sane plying his trade on the flank beside him, and this is evidently something that Postecoglou has dreamt up as he and Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy assess the best options to propel Tottenham to the front of the European game.

Heather Knight, Amy Jones lead England to emphatic win over West Indies

Visitors beaten with bat, ball and in the field as England win by 208 runs

Before this match, West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor had bemoaned the lack of so much as a full-time masseuse within her team’s set-up. And, as a number of the visiting players stood round their dugout grimacing and clutching at aches and pains after a torrid afternoon in the field, it was clear much more would be needed to cure their ills. Not that Taylor was making any excuses in her candid interview with ESPNcricinfo, in which she also revealed that her passion as a competitor often brought her to tears just talking about her game. Taylor described her team’s sloppy performance in the field on Thursday as “atrocious”. England could also improve in the field, with four chances missed, but the difference between these two sides was staggering as her opposite number, Heather Knight, and Amy Jones led an impressive team performance.Katherine Brunt was at her best, claiming two wickets in two balls, while Sophie Ecclestone and Laura Marsh claimed three apiece as West Indies were bowled out for a paltry 110, Chedean Nation running out of partners with an unbeaten 42.On the basis of this showing at Grace Road, much will need to change – possibly too much – for West Indies to be competitive in the second match of their three-ODI series in Worcester on Sunday.Knight and Jones fell agonisingly short of centuries but, by both reaching the nineties, they set West Indies an insurmountable target – England’s 318 for 9 was their highest ODI score against West Indies – and made an emphatic statement to ICC Women’s Championship table leaders Australia ahead of next month’s Ashes.Tammy Beaumont set the foundation, seeing the ball magnificently to plunder 32 off 28 balls, including six fours, but her innings came to a premature end when she lofted Hayley Matthews over mid-on only to find Shakera Selman just inside the boundary. Beaumont and Jones had taken England past 50 inside seven overs with Jones hinting at her form when she smacked the first ball of the innings – a Selman full toss – over the leg-side boundary for six.It was one of two maximums for Jones, who also hit 10 fours on a good batting wicket with a fast outfield. After Sarah Taylor fell cheaply, Jones and Knight took total control and during passages of play appeared to be picking off boundaries at will. Jones brought up her fourth half century in a row but only briefly raised her bat to mark the moment. Her maiden ton remains elusive after she fell on 91, three runs shy of her best score, driving Matthews towards mid-off where Stacy-Ann King jumped and raised her left hand above her head to almost casually pluck the ball from the air.Knight reached 94 off as many balls with 13 fours and appeared annoyed with her tame dismissal, a top edge off Afy Fletcher that went straight to Shamilia Connell at fine leg. But she and Jones had put England in an excellent position and a neat cameo from Nat Sciver bumped the score up further.Heather Knight carves through point•Getty Images

As her team threw themselves about for little reward amid a flurry of uncharacteristic miss-fields, Taylor had a bright moment when she clean bowled Brunt, who tried to smack the ball onto the leg side but found herself out of position as the ball took the top of her off-stump. England lost four wickets in the last five overs and Knight was disappointed the total wasn’t nearer 340 but, against the opposition, they had more than enough.”It’s hard to swallow,” Taylor told Sky Sports. “I didn’t think we bowled to our plan and I think it cost us. The English girls are quite good when you look at their batting lineup, it will take a lot more discipline to get those girls out.”The fielding was atrocious today … it’s sad to say. It’s a matter of going into the team room and discus what we need to discus and let it out and let this game go. We have two more games to go so hopefully we can bounce back.”Brunt had a brilliant opening spell with figures of 5-2-6-2, claiming the wickets of Matthews and Shemaine Campbelle with the fourth and fifth balls of the eighth over of the innings.West Indies never really got going and when Ecclestone uprooted Kycia Knight’s off-stump to claim her first wicket, there was worse to come for the visitors. Ecclestone had Kyshona Knight and King out in consecutive overs and West Indies were 73 for 6 after 25. Marsh got amongst the wickets and, when she knocked over Connell’s off-stump it was game over.Knight said: “We’ve talked about hitting the ground running in series, something that hasn’t probably been a strength of ours as a squad, so to put in that sort of performance in the first game of the summer, I’m really chuffed.”I think we’re actually disappointed with 318 in the end. If one of me and Amy was there in the last five overs we could have pushed that up to sort of 340 and we want to keep pushing that bar in terms of scoring big.”

Spurs eyeing up £26m "monster" who could be their next Romero

The January transfer window officially slammed shut last Thursday and Tottenham Hotspur snapped up two new additions to their first-team squad.

Central defender Radu Dragusin was brought in on a permanent deal from Italian side Genoa to compete with the likes of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy also moved to sign Germany international Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig, and the former Chelsea man has enjoyed a strong start to his career in North London.

The end of the transfer window did not stop the club from doing more business, though, as 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall was snapped up for a fee of £8.5m earlier this month, and he will link up with his new team at the end of the season.

Latest Spurs transfer news

Tottenham may not be able to make more signings to bolster their squad for the second half of the current campaign but, like they did with the Swedish teenager, they can put work in ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Corriere di Bologna, via Tutto Bologna Web, Spurs are one of many sides 'launching' their interest in Serie A centre-back Riccardo Calafiori as Postecoglou eyes up another new enforcer.

The report claims that Juventus, Napoli, AC Milan, and the Lilywhites are all keeping tabs on the impressive defender, who has caught the eye with his performances in Italy so far this season.

Riccardo Calafiori.

It also states that a fee of €30m (£26m) has been touted for the 21-year-old colossus. However, it remains to be seen whether or not any of the interested parties would be willing to pay it.

There is also the possibility that Bologna's valuation of the towering ace could fluctuate based on his form between now and the end of the campaign, as a drastic dip could lower his market value or it could skyrocket with a string of sublime displays.

Spurs already have van de Ven, Romero, and Dragusin on their books as recognised, natural, centre-backs, which means that they have two right-sided options and one, van de Ven, for the left, although Ben Davies can also cover in that position.

Signing Calafiori, who is left-footed, would leave Postecoglou with exceptional competition for places as he would have two first-team quality options in each role, for the right and the left of the centre-back pairing, and ensure that complacency does not creep in.

Whilst, as a left-sided titan, the £26m-rated gem could play alongside him, Spurs could land their next Romero in a swoop for the Bologna star as both players are progressive passers who can also read the game effectively to win possession back for their respective sides.

Cristian Romero's impressive performances for Spurs

The World Cup winner has been a terrific performer for Tottenham in recent seasons with his full-blooded, committed, displays at the heart of the defence.

Romero gives his all on the pitch and that is sometimes too much when it boils over, as it did when he gave away a penalty and picked up a red card for a poor challenge against Chelsea in the Premier League earlier this season.

Take those occasional moments of rash play out of the equation, though, and the 25-year-old colossus is vital to Spurs with his play in and out of possession.

Over the last 365 days, Romero ranks within the top 14% of centre-backs in the Men's Big Five Leagues and European competitions for progressive passes (4.86), and the top 11% for shot-creating actions (1.23) per 90 respectively.

Cristian Romero.

This shows that the Argentina international is a forward-thinking defender who constantly looks to progress the play for his team to build attacks, rather than being a regressive centre-back who plays safe passes and stagnates build-up play.

Along with his superb use of the ball, the Tottenham star also excels as an out-and-out defender who can read the game and dominate in physical battles.

Romero ranks within the top 13% of his positional peers in the aforementioned competitions over the last 365 days for interceptions (1.56), and the top 5% for tackles (2.40) per 90 respectively.

He has also won 69% of his duels across 18 appearances in the Premier League so far this season for Spurs, which shows that opposition players rarely get the better of him.

Why Calafiori could be Romero 2.0

Postecoglou could land a left-footed version of Romero by securing a deal to sign Calafiori ahead of the likes of Napoli, Juventus, and Milan in the summer.

FBref list the Argentine enforcer as one of the most similar defenders to the Bologna star based on their respective statistics, and it is easy to see why when you look at the 21-year-old ace's form this season.

Calafiori, whose recent progression has been described as "insane" by analyst Ben Mattinson, is a progressive passer who does not shy away from his defensive responsibilities.

The Italian titan currently ranks within the top 6% of Serie A centre-backs for shot-creating actions (1.68), and the top 29% for progressive passes (3.53) per 90 respectively. He also ranks in the top 5% for successful take-ons (0.46) per 90 this season.

These statistics suggest that the Spurs target, who has played 19 league matches this term, is similar to Romero in how he excels at building attacks that lead to shots at the opposition's goal.

As you can see in the table above, Calafiori has dominated attackers in physical contests and made made multiple defensive interventions to win the ball back for his team each game.

In fact, he ranks within the top 6% of Serie A centre-backs for interceptions (1.97) per 90, which illustrates his ability to read the game to step in and cut out opposition attacks.

Calafiori, who was described as a "monster" in the air by the aforementioned Mattinson, has also won 73% of his aerial duels in the league this season.

Therefore, the Bologna tank could be the left-footed Romero for Spurs if they secure his services in the summer due to his qualities in and out of possession.

Shami-Bumrah, Kohli put India one step closer to semi-finals

West Indies crash out of the race for the final four after going down by 125 runs

The Report by Varun Shetty27-Jun-20191:13

Hussey: India’s well-balanced bowling unit makes them extremely hard to beat

As it happenedIndia’s bowlers nullified yet another middling batting performance, pounding West Indies into the ground long before they could think about any reasonable comebacks. Having elected to bat, India were kept in check by some disciplined seam bowling from West Indies, whose wickets through the middle overs gave India their second consecutive bout of existential dread surrounding their middle order. But a solid 72 from Virat Kohli, who became the fastest to 20,000 international runs in the process, and timely, staggered attacks from Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni gave India 268. Mohammed Shami then took four, Jasprit Bumrah was practically unplayable, and the others chipped in as West Indies became the latest team to crash out of semi-final contention.Watch on Hotstar (India only): Highlights of India’s win over West IndiesShami, the hat-trick hero from India’s last game, was at his attacking best once again. He had Chris Gayle swiping to mid-on, and followed it up by nipping a length ball past Shai Hope’s defences to hit off stump. At 16 for 2 in seven overs, West Indies had seemingly already gone off the rails. A laboured 55-run stand for the third wicket between Sunil Ambris and Nicholas Pooran took up 12 overs and had the required rate breach run-a-ball territory early in the innings. To this context were thrown India’s middle-overs bowlers, with all their variations. Hardik, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, and West Indies were simply outdone. Ambris was trapped in front, Pooran holed out at long-on, Jason Holder was expertly done in by Chahal, driving to a strategically placed extra-cover fielder, and Carlos Brathwaite was taken by Dhoni, diving one-handed to his right, on what was a below-par wicket-keeping day for him.Watch on Hotstar (USA only): Highlights of India’s win over West IndiesFor the most part, Dhoni seemed to be having a below-average batting day as well. Coming in at No. 6, after the promoted Kedar Jadhav had fallen cheaply, Dhoni had time to play in his preferred patient style. At 140 for 4, Kohli was at the other end – a power pair. But with the prospect of Shami at No. 8 and more than 20 overs to play, India were forced, once again, to play within themselves. Dhoni, however, strayed out of his crease and looked to hoick Fabian Allen over midwicket in the 34th over, only to miss and give up on getting back. But Hope spilled the ball, missed the stumping chance, and in his funk from that moment, failed to gather the ball and run Dhoni out as well. It would come back to haunt his team.Virat Kohli is in celebration mode•Getty Images

But the effects of Shikhar Dhawan’s injury were clearly still in play for India. When India bat well, it is usually on the back of a big partnership for at least one of their first two wickets. With Rohit Sharma having fallen early, KL Rahul and Kohli were on their way to setting up such a stand. But for the fourth time in five innings, Rahul was undone by his shot selection. Having punched, driven straight, and pulled with control, he went across the line to a length ball slanting into him and was bowled for 48.To their credit, West Indies did have good control at that point. All short bowling had been punished early on, but Holder quickly put a stop to the hitting with a simple plan – bowl an off-stump line. He began with two maidens, and barely bowled a single ball in line with the stumps during his first few overs. Kohli, especially, could do little against him, and would eventually fall to his opposite number trying to drag one into the leg side from wide outside off. In the middle, though, it was Kemar Roach who reaped the rewards.Watch on Hotstar (India only): Highlights of Virat Kohli’s inningsHe emulated Holder’s strategy and straightened one past Vijay Shankar, who the spotlight keeps following at No. 4. Jadhav’s push up to No. 5 was also struck down with that ploy, and suddenly India’s big-hitters needed to be smarter with their plans. In Hardik’s case, this meant keeping the slogs out till the last eight overs of the innings, without compromising on his scoring rate. He was the only batsman – barring Sheldon Cottrell later – who struck at a rate greater than 100, despite hitting only five boundaries during his 38-ball 46.For Dhoni, it was hobbling to 40 off 55 at the start of the 49th over. Oshane Thomas hit the blockhole thrice in the last over, and none of them cost any runs. But his decision to also bowl three short balls took India from 252 to 268. Dhoni finished unbeaten on 56, and West Indies were left ruing their choices at the death. The most noteworthy moment early in India’s innings was Rohit’s dismissal. He was given out caught behind off the inside edge on review. Rohit’s disbelief was blatantly evident, a reaction likely prompted by the seeming hastiness with which third umpire Michael Gough overturned the on-field decision. Changing a decision demands conclusive evidence, which Gough seemed to have found relatively early from replays, almost at the first instance of Ultra Edge. While there was a murmur as the ball went past the inside edge, the square angles showed the ball had been between bat and pad when the noise was registered. Front-on angles suggested daylight between bat and ball, and in all, it seemed much too close for a decision made as quickly as it was. In the end, it didn’t play too big a part in the result.

Spurs must ditch 5/10 star alongside Bentancur after Brighton

Next weekend, Tottenham Hotspur will face Wolverhampton Wanderers on home turf. It could be coined as a 'winnable' fixture for Ange Postecoglou's side, who have won their past five home matches in the Premier League.

Of course, it's rarely that easy in English football and Wolves' last-gasp turnaround to sink Spurs out of nothing proves the dangers that lay embedded throughout the pathway to success come summer.

But Postecoglou will be emboldened by the return of many absentees since the new year, plus the turn in form that has put a poor patch throughout November and December in the past and has placed Tottenham back in top-four contention.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

Indeed, Brennan Johnson's late winner against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend proved pivotal as Aston Villa lost their hold on fourth place one day later, losing 2-1 to Manchester United in a thrilling encounter at Villa Park.

Johnson, a £47.5m summer signing from Nottingham Forest, has now struck home across his past two substitute appearances in the top-flight, indicative of a fresh weight of depth that has unshackled Postecoglou's free-flowing attacking ideology.

Spurs missed out on Werner upgrade in "brilliant" Premier League star

The Lilywhites were reportedly eyeing up the Wolverhampton Wanderers whiz last month.

ByDan Emery Feb 12, 2024

Now, the brooding clouds have scudded away and, suddenly, Tottenham have options. No longer is the squad constrained by injuries, suspensions and mid-season international tournaments.

For this reason, perhaps it's time for certain stars such as Timo Werner to return to the bench…

Why Timo Werner must be dropped

Throughout the early phase of Postecoglou's reign, it was clear that a talented squad had married into the Australian's expressive tactical set-up, but the tenuous thread banding it all together always threatened to snap and so it did when the absences started mounting after a stunning start.

The defence was always going to be chairman Daniel Levy's priority heading into the January transfer window and the £27m addition of Radu Dragusin from Genoa confirmed this notion not two weeks in.

Dragusin had been pursued for weeks and a deal always looked likely to reach completion, but the Romanian wasn't the first to join the fold, with Werner arriving from RB Leipzig on a loan deal until the end of the term to bolster the frontline, with an option to buy for around £15m.

A Champions League winner with Chelsea, Werner, aged 27, always impressed with his fleet-footed gait and dynamic ability but has been marred by positional unawareness and a lack of potency in goalscoring moments, something on display for Tottenham thus far.

After five matches in all competitions, the Germany international has supplied two assists and is yet to score, sort of capturing the above-mentioned traits that many expected from him.

There's no doubting that he's a valuable option and has opened up a new dimension to the Spurs attack but is he worthy of a starting berth on the biggest occasions? Perhaps not.

As per Sofascore, the 5 foot 11 star has taken 2.5 shots, created 1.5 key passes and averaged 3.5 ball recoveries per Premier League game so far, crisp in possession with an 84% pass success rate.

These are not bad metrics by any stretch and Werner clearly makes an impact down the left flank, driving play forward, keeping it tidy and creating chances for his peers, but after four successive starts in the Premier League, it's time for a place on the bench.

Spurs forward Timo Werner.

Last time out, against the Seagulls, he completed just over an hour before being replaced – alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski – by Heung-min Son, Yves Bissouma and Johnson.

Kulusevski is the attack's engine and is considered among the club's most important assets but Bentancur has assumed quite the heavy load since returning from injury problems that had ravaged his progress throughout 2023, and with Pape Matar Sarr scoring and Bissouma making his return, it might be time for the Uruguayan to spend a bit of time on the bench.

There's a case that the starting players are worn out, with Son and Bissouma returning from international duty and significantly strengthening the squad in doing so, and for Werner, this was especially so, with football.london's Alasdair Gold handing him a 5/10 match rating.

The journalist wrote: 'A quiet first half with the odd little run and pass without really threatening. Started the second half well though with a strong run past a few challenges before a low deflected effort wide. His end product remains inconsistent.'

A quiet first half indeed, with Lilywhites shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario even having more touches (44) than Werner managed (41) across his 61 minutes of action.

The best option to replace Werner

With Son producing the weighted, curling cross-field pass to provide Johnson with the space to rifle home in the dying embers, it's pretty much a no-brainer that the South Korea international must be handed a starting berth going forward.

Not too long ago, a case could have been made to field Werner on the left and have Son occupy the focal role in the centre, but Richarlison has posted nine goals from nine matches in the Premier League so his place at centre-forward is pretty much locked in.

Son's not exactly ineffectual on the wing either. The 31-year-old club captain has scored 12 goals and supplied six assists from 21 league games this season and left Postecoglou gushing over his "world-class" ability after his match-winning moment on Saturday.

It was yet another creative decision to pay off handsomely for his side, and that's without even touching on his deadliness as a first-rate goalscorer.

There's a case to be made that Son is one of the game's finest natural finishers, taking just 2.5 shots per game in the Premier League this year compared to Erling Haaland's 5.8 and Mohamed Salah's 3.3.

Tottenham captain Heung-min Son.

With James Maddison fully fit once again, Son can release the creative burden he has held for much of the campaign and focus on his most effective threat on the field: bypassing goalkeepers' nets with alarming incisiveness.

Of course, he's hardly averse to supplementing his teammates, is he? And there's no question about the £190k-per-week machine's technical ability and tactical intelligence.

Werner will start again and has proved himself a good option for Postecoglou to have, but the time has come for Son to reclaim his rightful place at the heart of Spurs' exploits and after such a sublime assist on his first game back from a disappointing and likely dispiriting Asia Cup tournament, his unparalleled place in this Tottenham team is underpinned.

A equipe permanece concentrada no Hotel Gildásio Miranda, dentro do CT, para as próximas três partidas: Guarani (11/4), Ferroviária (13/4) e São Bento (16/4).
