'We're looking beyond winning one World Cup' – Eoin Morgan

After 2019 triumph, captain wants ‘special group of players’ to push on towards further glories

Eoin Morgan has hinted he could yet stay on as England captain until the 2023 World Cup, as he prepares to lead the 50-over team into their first ODI since that victory over New Zealand in last year’s final at Lord’s.Speaking on the eve of the ODI series opener against South Africa in Cape Town, Morgan said he had been in the form of his life in the lead-up to the 2019 World Cup, and while accepting that things can change quickly in professional sport, he acknowledged that it was important to make the most of the “special group of players” that had come together in England’s white-ball squads over the past four years.”It was our goal to win the World Cup. We managed to achieve that, which is an unbelievable feeling, and it lays a platform for us to build for the next cycle,” Morgan said. “We will stick to the processes by which we try to get better all the time, and that will involve younger guys coming through and testing the guys who hold the positions at the moment, because that has worked extremely well for us over the last couple of years.”Morgan himself will be one of those most tested by the coming generation, seeing as he will be 36 by the time the next World Cup takes place in India in the spring of 2023. However, there are two further ICC tournaments between now and then – back-to-back T20 World Cups in Australia this winter and India in 2021 – and right at this moment, he believes he has both the form and the drive to continue to flourish in his role.”I haven’t looked that far ahead,” Morgan said of the 2023 tournament. “But I’ve looked to the next T20 World Cups and I feel there’s enough space to say I’m hoping to be here for both. But things change, and when you make decisions to stay on, the decision is often taken out of your hands.ALSO READ: Back in blue for England as post-World Cup era begins”For me, it’s a matter of focusing on this year’s T20 World Cup, and putting us in the best position to try and win it,” he added. “But I think over the last four-and-a-bit years, I’ve been in the best form of my life. I think the level of experience I have now, and having grown in confidence as a leader, that has allowed me to be the best version of myself.”In the aftermath of England’s dramatic World Cup win, Morgan took his time to decide whether he had the hunger to carry on as captain. But the opportunity to reflect, both on the team’s achievements to date and on their opportunity for further success, persuaded him to continue in the short-to-medium term at least. In particular, Morgan admitted that the opportunity to have another crack at the T20 World Cup was a big factor, after England’s bid for the trophy at the last event in India in 2016 collapsed amid Carlos Brathwaite’s four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes in the final in Kolkata.Eoin Morgan and Joe Root were shattered•Getty Images

Despite the disappointment on that occasion, Morgan identified that setback – as well as England’s 3-2 series loss on their last ODI tour of South Africa that same year – as key motivations for a team that has grown together over the past five years. And now, with a core of senior players approaching their 30s, he believes the squad can use all that prior experience to push on towards yet more glory.”Given the age group that we have among our senior players, they don’t take their positions for granted but they are looking further, beyond winning one World Cup,” Morgan said. “Days like the T20 World Cup final in 2016, and losing down here in the fashion that we did last time, really did contribute to creating that drive moving forward.”We recognise that things don’t last forever and that we do have a special group of players together, so making the most of it is extremely important,” he added. “Sides over the years have had some unbelievably great individual players but actually haven’t won a great deal, so we’re really fortunate to have won something. But that drive going forward is extremely important.”A major factor in that drive was the healthy competition for places that England had in so many key roles, and Morgan said that they would not be changing their template as they look to refresh their squad with a new generation of younger players such as Tom Banton and Saqib Mahmood, in the coming months and years.”If we put this series in context, it will allow us to build a broader squad for three or four years’ time,” he said. “We’ll have more players to select from, like we did for this summer’s World Cup, and it also allows us to look at guys who could be potential candidates for the end of the year’s T20 World Cup.”We’ve never focused on peaking at a particular time, we’ve focused on finding opportunities to pick guys when we can,” he said. “Ultimately we don’t know how good people can be until they get exposed, so being as open-minded as we can with selection, and recognising performances around the world and at home is important.”We want guys to play their own way, within the framework of our gameplan, which is about playing positive, aggressive, smart cricket,” he added. “That leaves a lot of creative imagination and individuality for guys to go out and play their own way, and make their own decisions, and until that template changes or doesn’t suit us, we’re sticking to that.”

Reliable journalist shares promising Rangers injury news before Dundee

A promising Rangers injury update has emerged ahead of the Scottish Premiership clash with Dundee on Wednesday evening, shared on social media by journalist Joshua Barrie.

Rangers face huge clash with Dundee

The Gers suffered a damaging 3-2 defeat away to Ross County last weekend, in a result that could ultimately prove to be so costly come the end of the season. At half-time, it looked as though Philippe Clement's side were on their way to another victory, leading 1-0, but the manner in which they fell apart was a real concern.

Having drawn 3-3 at home to Celtic as well, the importance of victory away to Dundee in midweek cannot be downplayed, having allowed the Hoops an advantage in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

They now have a four-point lead at the top of the table, but Rangers' game on Wednesday will give them the chance to narrow the gap to just one. Going into the match, there are still injury concerns for Clement, with a number of players unavailable for yet another hugely important game. That includes the likes of Ridvan Yilmaz, Oscar Cortes and Ryan Jack, meaning they won't be at full strength for their midweek showdown.

Journalist drops key Rangers injury update

Taking to X on Tuesday, Barrie claimed that Yilmaz won't be out injured in the long-term, even though he is out of the Dundee game, providing quotes from Clement's pre-match press conference in the process:

"Clement is confident Ridvan won't be out long-term but can't put a timeframe on his return yet. 'I'm sure it's not going to be long-term, he's on the pitch training individually.'"

Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz.

This has to be considered good news for Rangers, even though they won't be able to call upon the services of Yilmaz on Wednesday night, considering there will have been fears about him potentially being out for the rest of the season.

The Turk hasn't featured for the Gers since the middle of the March, playing in the 1-0 defeat at home to Benfica in the Europa League, and Clement needs him back in the fold as soon as possible. That has only heightened because of Borna Barisic's form, with the left-back taken off early in the loss to Ross County, being handed a three-out-of-10 rating in the process.

Rangers chiefs changing plans after confirmed Champions League update

It’s going to affect them in more ways than one.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 16, 2024

It is important that Rangers don't rush Yilmaz back prematurely – fielding an under-cooked player is something that won't be of any help to anyone – but the hope is that he is fit and available for the end of the season, coming back into the team and playing his part in what could be a memorable Scottish Premiership title triumph for Clement and his players.

For now, three points at Dundee simply have to be taken, closing the gap on Celtic and ensuring that the Gers' slight blip in recent matches comes to an end sooner rather than later.

IPL halves play-off reward, hikes staging fee for franchises – owners object

Shah Rukh, Ambani, Jindal sign email asking league to reconsider proposed changes

Owners of all eight franchises have signed a letter that was sent to the IPL, asking the league to put on hold the proposed changes concerning the league standing money and the hosting fee payable to the state associations that house the venues. Among the owners that signed letter, which was sent last weekend, are Shah Rukh Khan (co-owner at Kolkata Knight Riders), Akash Ambani (Mumbai Indians), Kasi Viswanathan (CEO of Chennai Super Kings) and Parth Jindal (majority owner at Delhi Capitals).Recently the IPL told all eight franchises it was cutting the league standing money, earned by the four teams that makes the play-offs, from the existing INR 50 crore to half the amount. The league standing money, which is the same amount as the prize money, was introduced around the 2014 season when the BCCI decided to help out franchise owners who had requested funds. As per the existing system the IPL prize money is INR 50 crore. That is split among the four teams that make the play-offs with the winner pocketing INR 20 crore, the runner-up INR 12.5 crore and the third- and fourth-placed teams getting INR 8.25 crore each. The prize money goes exclusively to the players. However the league standing money is earned by the franchises. Going forward the IPL told franchises that although the IPL prize money pot would continue to be the same, the distribution of the league standing money would come down to INR 25 crore. As per the new distribution system for the league standing money, the franchise of the winning team would get INR 10 crore, the runner-up INR 6.25 crore and the third and fourth-placed teams would get around INR 4.12 crore approximately. In another proposed move, the IPL also told franchises that it was increasing the hosting fee per home match, payable to the respective state association, from INR 30 lakhs per match to INR 50 lakhs. That would mean each franchise will end up paying a minimum of INR 1.4 crore over an IPL season. A similar amount – INR 50 lakhs – will be paid by BCCI to the state association, thus increasing the staging fee from INR 60 lakh per match to INR 1 crore. The IPL reasoned that the hike in hosting fee was necessary to the state associations for the upkeep of the ground, stadium and other facilities. However, the franchises have called the IPL’s move “arbitrary”. They are also disgruntled because despite being the primary stakeholders, they were never consulted. In the email, the owners have asked the IPL Governing Council to consider putting on hold the two proposals until the various sponsorship deals, including the current media rights deal, expires in 2022.”We have to draw your attention to the changes which you have made with regards to the following: Increase fee by 66% payable by franchises to state associations. And reduce league standing fund which is reduced by 50% to franchises,” the email signed by the eight team owners, said. “We humbly request that the Governing Council defer the proposed changes till the end of the current media rights deal and thereafter enter into a consulting process with the various franchise owners to discuss any changes.”One of the owners at a franchise said that the IPL could have considered various factors including COVID-19, the epidemic that has disrupted life across the board globally and forced sporting contests or tournaments to be downright cancelled, postponed or played behind closed doors.”It should be a discussion. It shouldn’t be arbitrary,” the owner told ESPNcricinfo. “If you are going to make us pay more (to the state associations) and with the coronavirus, less people will be coming, so how are we supposed to make money? As it is we don’t make money through ticketing revenues. Secondly, why are being penalised?”A chief executive at one other franchise said the timing of the IPL’s decision had caught everyone by surprise. This CEO said that although the amount that the franchises stood to lose was not massive, it would still affect budgets which had been projected on a five-year model immediately after the IPL’s media rights deal in 2017. That deal had ensured every franchise stood to earn anywhere between INR 150 to upwards of 200 crore per season from the central revenue pool.”The budgets for this IPL has been frozen,” the franchise CEO said. “We all had made our projections based on the media rights for five years. It was based upon the money we would get from the central pool as well as the prize money. But all of a sudden now they are taking arbitrary decisions like increasing the hosting fee by two-thirds and reducing the prize money by 50%. That is not fair. That is the reason we are requesting them to continue with this existing arrangement till the end of the current media rights cycle in 2022. All the IPL deals including title sponsorships etc. are till 2022.”A senior BCCI official disagreed that the IPL decision was wrong. He said that the league standing fund was introduced to lend a helping arm to the franchises financially. Now that they are self-sufficient, that aid was being revoked. “There were certain concessions given when the franchises were bleeding, when they were not in a financially good state,” the BCCI official said. “Those concessions were not part of the IPL contract with franchises. In 2014, the BCCI had decided to grant those concessions. And now that they are financially sound and everything is fine, those concessions have been withdrawn.”

Nottingham Forest must rue not hiring "incredible" manager ahead of Nuno

Just over five months ago, Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis made the unfortunate call to sack manager Steve Cooper after a run of six games without a win.

The Welshman captured the hearts of the Reds fanbase, taking over the side after they were rooted to the bottom of the Championship after picking up just one point from their opening seven matches in 2021/22.

However, the former Swansea City boss achieved the unthinkable, leading the club to the Premier League following a 1-0 win in the play-off final over Huddersfield Town at Wembley.

Cooper once again worked his magic during the club's first top-flight campaign in 23 years, securing survival despite a huge influx of new signings – providing him with the huge task of gelling a bunch of strangers into a side good enough for the Premier League.

A poor start to the 2023/24 season – which included a run of five defeats out of six at one stage leading up to Cooper's departure – would see him lose his job at the City Ground, with numerous names flying around to replace the fan-favourite in the dugout.

Forest had verbal agreement with high-profile boss

According to a recent report from The Guardian, the club were recommended by advisor George Syrianos, to appoint former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner, with the Austrian being the perfect fit for the Reds' squad.

The report goes on to state the club had a verbal agreement with the 49-year-old to take over at the City Ground, before owner Marinakis caught wind of the deal and decided to pursue another option.

He instead decided to appoint Nuno Espírito Santo, mainly down to his agent – Jorge Mendes, a football super agent who has multiple high-profile clients, in a bid to tempt them to ply their trade in Nottingham.

Nuno enjoyed success at Wolves, with signings such as Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota making a huge impact in their Championship-winning campaign – scoring 23 goals between them that season.

However, with just three games to go Nuno's side sit just a point clear of the Premier League's relegation zone, with the Reds making a huge mistake in not hiring Glasner.

Why Glasner's system would've secured PL survival for Forest

The "incredible" Austrian, as described by Transfermarkt's Stefan Bienkowski, would subsequently join Crystal Palace in February, taking over from Roy Hodgson and making an instant impact at Selhurst Park.

He's already secured Premier League survival for the Eagles, despite being 15th and just a handful of points clear of the drop at the time of his arrival – with his 3-4-2-1 system working its magic in England.

His high-intensity system has allowed multiple players at Palace to thrive, with his tactics masterminding a stunning 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield a few weeks ago.

Glasner's formation depends on his three centre-backs being comfortable on the ball, with the central player out of the three often playing slightly more advanced in possession to allow for a third man in the middle of the pitch – subsequently creating an overload in midfield.

Jefferson Lerma has been one player who has hugely benefitted from his arrival at the club, with the Colombian midfielder slotting into a wide centre-back role in recent weeks – even claiming FotMob's Man of the Match award for his performance against Jürgen Klopp's side.

The two attacking players behind the central striker would have a crucial part to play in any success, with the two wing-backs often providing the width, allowing the number 10s to stay central.

Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze are arguably Palace's two most important players – hence their current £60m valuations – with Glasner able to utilise the duo in behind the striker, allowing them to get on the ball in some crucial areas, and further creating an overload alongside the two central midfielders and the centre-back who has pushed forward from the back.

Crystal Palace midfielderEberechi Eze.

However, he's had the greatest effect on striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the Frenchman thriving since Glasner's arrival at the club.

The Palace number 14 has scored eight goals in his last ten Premier League appearances, with Olise and Eze's creativity and the introduction of flying wing-backs aiding his tally.

Whilst Forest striker Chris Wood has registered 12 goals this season, Glasner's one-time potential arrival at the Reds would've allowed the New Zealand international to have further added to his tally.

Current boss Nuno has stuck to a 4-2-3-1 system throughout the majority of his time at the City Ground, with the emphasis on counter-attacking rather than dominating possession.

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno during a Premier League game.

However, Glasner's time short time at Selhurst Park has quickly transformed the side into a dominant force, with the aim to dominate possession, create overloads and play with fluidity in attack – all traits that would've aided Wood's goalscoring record.

Five months on from the deal to bring Nuno to the East Midlands, the Forest hierarchy must wish they had listened to Syrianos, who could've appointed the perfect boss for the club. However, with three games left this season, the Tricky Trees are sweating over their top-flight status, with fans still unsure whether Nuno is the right man to lead the club forward.

Arsenal enquire about signing £75m star who’s "very similar to Saka"

One game to go, just one more match, and we'll know whether the Premier League title is staying in Manchester or coming to North London for the first time in two decades.

Mikel Arteta's young Arsenal side have proven once again this season that they are the real deal, and regardless of the title's ultimate destination, they are here to stay and challenge Pep Guardiola's juggernaut for some time to come.

Alongside Sporting Director Edu Gaspar, the Spaniard has helped to transform the North Londoner's squad with impressive additions like Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz, but one player who could use some real competition is Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka

The club poster boy has been the first name on the teamsheet for several years now, but based on recent reports, he could soon have the perfect teammate to push him to new heights.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from former BBC journalist Ibrahim Sannie Daara, Arsenal have enquired about the availability of West Ham United sensation Mohammed Kudus ahead of the summer transfer window.

While this is certainly exciting news for the Arsenal faithful, the same report also revealed that Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain have all done the same thing, while Liverpool are set to trigger the Ghanaian's £75m release clause in the coming weeks.

There is a lot of competition for the Gunners to overcome in this transfer battle, but with the club on the precipice of lifting major honours, they might be able to sell themselves better than the Reds.

Moreover, while Kudus could come in as a Saka challenger, his positional versatility could also see him take over from Kai Havetz as the number nine, replace Leandro Trossard as the long-term leftwinger, or even move into the midfield to partner Martin Odegaard.

Ultimately, it will be a tough deal to complete, but for £75m, the club should fight tooth and nail for it.

How Kudus could fit in at Arsenal

Now, there are several ways Kudus could come in and make Arsenal a better team. The first is as a serious challenger to Saka.

According to respected data analyst Ben Mattinson, the former Ajax ace is "very similar to Saka" in that he has an immense impact on games from the right, assisting his teammates and scoring goals himself.

For example, in just 20 starts on the right side of the attack this season, the "generational" forward, as described by journalist Gary Al-Smith, has scored 13 goals and provided one assist, meaning he is averaging a goal involvement every 1.4 games – an output similar to Saka's average of a goal involvement every 1.3 games from his 20 goals and 14 assists in 47 appearances.

However, what sets the Hammers star apart is his versatility. While he would likely come in to challenge the Englishman for that place on the right, he would also be able to play in multiple other positions, keeping the rest of the team on their toes and adding a new dimension to the North Londoners.

For example, in 42 appearances as a centre-forward in his career, the Accra-born sensation has scored 14 goals and provided three assists, meaning he averages a goal involved as the number nine once every 2.4 games. This isn't far off Havertz's return of a goal involvement every 1.9 games as a striker, coming from his return of 36 goals and 12 assists in 95 starts.

Finally, while the 23-year-old has played on the left a few times in his career and could, therefore, challenge the likes of Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, his considerable experience playing in attacking and central midfield roles could allow him to flourish as a more attacking midfielder alongside Odegaard.

For example, in 46 games as a central midfielder, the 5 foot 9 ace has scored 11 goals and provided three assists, while in 44 games as an attacking midfielder, he's scored 12 goals and provided six assists, meaning he averages a goal involvement every 3.2 and 2.4 games, respectively.

Ultimately, it would be an expensive deal to complete, but signing Kudus would provide the club with a star who would genuinely challenge Saka. Moreover, his ability to start almost anywhere on the pitch would give Arteta a level of tactical freedom not offered by any other player.
