The Ashwin vs Buttler subplot as Rajasthan Royals look to relaunch against high-flying Delhi Capitals

Steven Smith’s men return to Sharjah, where they have won both their matches so far

Shashank Kishore08-Oct-20207:34

Should Steven Smith change his batting approach?

Big picture
The Delhi Capitals are flying high, with four wins in five games. Their duo of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje are seemingly in a healthy mini-battle to outdo each other on the pace stakes, while Marcus Stoinis is delivering on his promise. All of this has complemented their power-packed Indian line-up so well that they cannot fit Ajinkya Rahane in the XI even as we get towards the halfway mark of the competition, with the pitches beginning to slow down. The Rajasthan Royals, meanwhile, have had to shuffle their players and deviate from their set templates because they have found it hard to adjust to conditions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. So returning to Sharjah, where they have won both their matches, should help after three back-to-back losses that have left them in a delicate position. They are all too familiar with the mid-table jostle, of course, and need one complete performance to give their campaign a much-needed lift.Jos Buttler’s form will encourage them. If Sanju Samson and Steven Smith can find ways to get back among runs, the Royals can breathe easy. And, not to forget, it’s R Ashwin vs Jos Buttler Part 1 for the season too, with the Indian spinner having issued his “first and final warning” to batsmen straying out at the non-striker’s end. That’s one subplot to keep an eye on.In the news Ben Stokes is on the last bit of his mandatory six-day quarantine, having arrived from New Zealand on Sunday. So, he will not be there for Friday’s match but should be available for the Royals’ seventh league fixture on October 11 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Capitals haven’t named a replacement for the injured Amit Mishra. Going by their squad depth, they don’t need to, especially with Axar Patel continuing to deliver telling spells and Ashwin showing no signs of discomfort after returning from a shoulder niggle that kept him out for two matches. Tom Curran’s five outings have fetched him just three wickets at a very high economy of 11.30. Are the Royals better off playing David Miller for a game before Stokes becomes available? Miller will add heft to a batting line-up short of confidence. That will mean they may have to get overs out of spinners Mahipal Lomror and Rahul Tewatia, which could be a bit of a risk owing to the short boundaries in Sharjah.R Ashwin is unlikely to let batsmen off if they stray from their crease at the non-striker’s end•BCCI

Likely XIsDelhi Capitals: 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Axar Patel, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Harshal Patel, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Kagiso RabadaRajasthan Royals: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Sanju Samson, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Mahipal Lomror, 6 Rahul Tewatia, 7 Tom Curran/David Miller, 8 Shreyas Gopal, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Kartik Tyagi, 11 Ankit RajpootStrategy punts The Royals should look to open the bowling with Jofra Archer and Shreyas Gopal. Here’s why: Prithvi Shaw likes pace on the ball, as does Shikhar Dhawan, who has struggled to get off the blocks quickly. So Gopal will help to take the pace off – and Shaw has been out to the legspinner twice in the 14 balls he has faced from him to date. And Jofra Archer at the other end will hustle both batsmen with pace. Shaw was out to a quick, short ball against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the previous game, something the Royals can look to replicate against him. Shaw has been out to the short ball 11 times in the IPL overall. So far, Nortje has been used primarily in the powerplay (50% of his overs) and Rabada has been held back for the death (50% of his overs). It has worked to perfection. The Royals are top heavy, so maybe there’s a case of using them both upfront to hunt in a pack this time. As such, Samson doesn’t like short balls into the body – he has been out twice to this variety delivered over 140kph. As for Smith, the good-length delivery hit hard into the pitch has accounted for him twice – both while going for a mow to the leg side. Clearly, the Capitals have the kind of bowlers to target their weak links.Stats that matter Axar Patel’s economy of 4.6 is the best among bowlers who have delivered at least ten overs this season. Buttler made a 22-ball 67 the last time he played the Capitals. That was his first outing as an opener for the franchise; he has since averaged 53 at the top. He also has nine half-centuries in 18 innings as an opener for the Royals. Ankit Rajpoot is one away from 100 T20 wickets. The Capitals spinners have conceded only 14 boundaries so far, the least among all spin packs this season.

Aston Villa want to sign UCL winner who could light it up in Europe

The 2024/25 season will be an exciting adventure for Aston Villa. They will return to the Champions League for the first time in over 40 years, last playing with Europe’s elite in the 1982/83 season. In that campaign, they were the defending champions, having lifted the European Cup in 1981/82.

Indeed, it will be the first foray into the Champions League for many of Villa’s squad members. Whilst the likes of Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby have already played in the prestigious competition, it will be a new experience for stars such as Ollie Watkins and John McGinn.

Their manager, Unai Emery, is an experienced manager in Europe, so they will not be led blindly into the competition. He has managed 53 games in the Champions League, winning 20 of those, drawing 11 and losing 34 times. He is also a serial winner in the Europa League, having won it three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.

Villa may well decide to turn to the transfer market to add some Champions League pedigree to their squad ahead of their exciting European journey next term. They have been linked with one player who would bring just that, given he is a former winner of the tournament.

Villa target Champions League level talent

The player in question here is AS Roma and England striker Tammy Abraham. The Chelsea academy graduate is a past winner of the Champions League and has been linked with a move back to Villa Park, having previously been on loan at the club.

AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham.

At least, this is according to Football Insider. Abraham “ticks a lot of boxes” for Villa, with both parties viewing a potential return to Villa Park as an “appealing prospect”.

However, Villa are not thought to be the only Premier League club interested in signing Abraham over the summer transfer window. According to talkSPORT, North Londoners Tottenham Hotspur are thought to be keen on a move, too. This would be a move that sees Abraham join one of his former club Chelsea’s biggest rivals.

Tammy Abraham

With regards to a price, Roma would reportedly look for around £26m for Abraham from Spurs this summer. Thus, it seems safe to assume that Villa would have to pay a similar fee. Should the deal for Abraham go through for that price, it would see Roma make a considerable loss on the £34m they spent on him in 2021.

What Abraham can bring to Villa

Sadly, Abraham has not played much football during the 2023/24 season, due to picking up an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the final game of Roma’s 2022/23 campaign. That has kept him out for the majority of last term, but he made his return from injury on the 6th April, during a 1-0 derby victory over Lazio.

In total last season, the 26-year-old played eight times in Serie A, where he scored one goal against Napoli, and registered one assist, which came against Europa League winners Atalanta. In Europe, he played four times but did not get on the scoresheet.

Tammy Abraham

There is no doubting Abraham’s quality, despite his injury which kept him sidelined for so long. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him as a “superb centre-forward” in 2021, and his record for Roma shows why. He has scored 37 times for the club, as well as registering 13 assists in 119 games, just over a goal involvement every two games.

With Villa entering the Champions League for the first time in 40 years next season, bringing in a striker with a pedigree in the competition such as Abraham’s could be a smart move. He was part of the Chelsea side that won the competition in 2020/21, and he played a major part in that season. His record in the competition speaks for itself.

Stats from Transfermarkt

Abraham has proven quality in the Champions League, which could be really key to helping Villa qualify out of the new-look format.

Having the English international and countryman Watkins at his disposal to lead the line would be a luxury of riches for Emery.

The Roma man would bring goals to this Villa squad, and whilst they were not necessarily short of that last season, you can never score too much.

He is proven in the Premier League, with 26 goals in the top flight in England, experienced winning Europe's premier competition and is adored by the Villa fans. The striker was part of the promotion-winning side in 2018/19, a season where he scored 26 goals in 40 games. Perhaps it will not be long before we see him back scoring in the famous claret and blue shirt.

Jayawardene says fast bowlers have 'bigger role' to play even as IPL pitches get slower

“As long as they are making contributions, it doesn’t matter what kind of surfaces we play on”

Vishal Dikshit15-Oct-2020

Mahela Jayawardene said it was Rohit Sharma’s idea to replace Lasith Malinga with James Pattinson•BCCI

Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene says his fast bowlers still have a “bigger role” to play in the IPL even if some pitches have showed signs of slowing down in the UAE. Mumbai will think about changing their bowling attack to bring in a spinner for one of their quicker bowlers only when the conditions will require them to, Jayawardene said. With fast bowlers from others teams too – as was shown by Jofra Archer, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Norte on Wednesday night – picking wickets and troubling batsmen consistently, and Mumbai’s own trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult and James Pattinson excelling with their combined wickets tally of 31, Jayawardene says he is “happy” with their current combination.”We need to see how it (the conditions) will evolve,” Jayawardene said a day before their clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday. “Last year as well we made that adjustment at the back-end of the tournament when we played in certain pitches (in Delhi and Chennai) that were suited for spinners. I cannot say that right now because still the fast bowlers have a bigger role to play in this competition, whether it’s in the powerplay, middle overs or back-end.”As long as they (fast bowlers) are making contributions, they are penetrating the oppositions’ batting line-up, it doesn’t matter what kind of surfaces we play on because the quality of the fast bowling that we have is always going to create opportunities. If the conditions suits, then yes, we will look into that but right now we’re happy with the combination that we have.”Mumbai were second on the points table before Thursday’s game with five wins out of seven games, and their performances so far have come down to almost all of their batsmen firing, and their fast bowlers’ ability to adapt quickly to conditions that aren’t tailor-made for them. Jayawardene said they were a “little wobbly” in the first few games but he is pleased with their consistency since the Super Over finish against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, to win four games in a row.One of the surprise packages for Mumbai has been Pattinson, who is playing his maiden IPL and has picked nine wickets from seven games with an economy rate of 8.25. While the pace attack is led by the more experienced campaigners Bumrah and Boult, Mumbai were forced to fill the big void of Lasith Malinga, who opted out of the IPL for personal reasons. Jayawardene revealed it was captain Rohit Sharma’s idea to bring in Pattinson as the replacement, who could create wicket-taking opportunities for them in the opening and middle overs.ALSO READ: How James Pattinson is turning the heat on from ‘back-seat role'”I have to be honest, there were quite a few names that we discussed [to replace Malinga] but Rohit was the one who put his hand up and said Patto will be someone who will definitely add value to the attack,” Jayawardene said. “What he brings is pace, accuracy, bowls the hard ball and has that wicket-taking ability which we always look at. I know he was replacing Mali who is a death overs specialist but the requirement for us was always going to be tough to replace a like-to-like match for Lasith.”How to compensate that is by try and get someone who is going to create opportunities up front and in the middle by picking up wickets. So that’s where Jimmy’s name came up. So that was the path we took and he hasn’t let us down from the day he arrived – the way he trained, the way he understood the role we wanted him to do in the team and he adapted really, really well. He has formed a very good partnership with Boulty and Boom, and these few guys have been really, really good. So far it’s been brilliant. As a result, Mumbai are the only team so far to have used only 12 players from their squad, bringing in Ishan Kishan at No. 4 for Saurabh Tiwary, who picked a niggle after their first two games. With “very good” players like Chris Lynn, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Mitchell McClenaghan still on the bench, Jayawardene said it not only created a healthy rivalry in the dressing room but also gave them the option to pick players for very specific conditions and oppositions, apart from bringing in changes to manage players’ workload.”It makes a healthy rivalry within the group, we monitor everyone’s attitude and focus, whether they’re actually prepared for each and every game,” Jayawardene explained. “Depending on that we might make certain changes, if we feel they’re not physically capable or whether they are mentally fresh, then we make those rotations and make sure we manage the workloads. So that’s the reason we’ve got a lot of good players on the bench ready to go at any given time.”For now, the coach is satisfied with their 12 points that have given them an early advantage in the playoffs race as “the tournament will always get tougher and tougher at the back-end.”

Sheffield Wednesday want to sign striker who played up front with Ronaldo

After an incredible end to the season saw Sheffield Wednesday stave off relegation from the Championship, the Owls are hoping to reward Danny Rohl with a slew of new players.

Wednesday wasting no time with summer signings

The latest news out of Hillsborough has linked the Owls with a move for Plymouth Argyle wing-back Mickel Miller. Wednesday are said to be plotting a move for the 28-year-old, who will be available on a free transfer when his current deal expires at the end of this month.

ByKelan Sarson Jun 27, 2024

If Wednesday are to get a deal for Miller over the line he would join a number of players who have already made the move to South Yorkshire. The Owls are clearly eager to use the free agent market, signing out of contract stars Ben Hamer and Max Lowe. The former leaves Watford after 21 appearances for the Hornets last season while Lowe becomes one of just a handful of players to move to Wednesday from Sheffield United.

Joining Lowe and Hamer at Hillsborough is former Southampton player Yan Valery, who made a move from French club Angers earlier this month. With the Owls not shy of bringing in new players, the club are now in the race for yet another free agent.

Owls in the mix for McNeill

As shared by The Yorkshire Post, The Championship Chat Podcast, run by two prominent EFL reporters, have claimed that Sheffield Wednesday are firmly in the race to sign former Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill. The 20-year-old's current deal at Old Trafford is set to expire at the end of this month meaning that he will be free to leave the club.

McNeill started his career at Manchester City but moved to the red side of the city in 2020. Following the move, the striker worked his way up the Red Devils' youth ranks, putting up impressive numbers for United's Under-18s and Under-21s. It was his time in youth football that saw McNeill catch the eye of United youth coach Neil Ryan, who sang the striker's praises back in 2021.

"Charlie is a character, absolutely. He’s a goalscorer, he took his goal ever so well, fantastic finish, and he is a cheeky little lad every now and then.

"But you do want young footballers to have character, confidence, that’s what he’s got. We don’t want to knock that out of him, but we of course want to make sure he knows the levels of respect for everyone."

The youngster's exploits in United's youth ranks saw McNeill finally make his senior debut as a substitute in the Europa League defeat against Real Sociedad back in September 2022. The then 19-year-old entered the pitch with his side 1-0 down, forming a strike partnership with United legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following his debut for the Red Devils, McNeill was subsequently shipped out on loan to EFL sides Stevenage and Newport County. After returning from the former in January 2024, the striker is now set to be shown the door at Old Trafford.

With McNeill set to depart on a free transfer this summer, Wednesday could do a lot worse than a player with the potential to go far who won't cost the club a penny.

Nottingham Forest submit £25m offer for "wonderful" star, answer received

Looking to land their fifth signing of the summer transfer window, Nottingham Forest have reportedly already had an answer following their bid to sign another midfield reinforcement.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

Those at the City Ground have already welcomed four fresh faces in a successful summer window so far. Elliot Anderson, Marko Stamenic, Eric da Silva Moreira and, most recently, Carlos Miguel have all walked through the door as Forest look to push away from relegation trouble next season.

In Nuno Espirito Santo's first full campaign in charge, he will hope to replicate the success that he had at fellow Midlands club Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Forest's Chief Football Officer Ross Wilson welcomed Miguel, telling the club's official website: “Carlos has arrived in Nottingham full of excitement following his performances in Brazil with Corinthians. He concluded all of the formalities yesterday and we are pleased that he will join the squad so early on in pre-season.”

Nottingham Forest reignite interest in "superb" ace; club now open to sale

A boost for the Midlands club…

ByTom Cunningham Jul 11, 2024

Wilson has wasted no time in admiring his new arrival, however, and has instead seemingly turned his attention towards another fresh face. According to Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest have submitted a €30m (£25m) offer to sign Youssouf Fofana from AS Monaco, but have seen their bid rejected with the midfielder edging closer to joining Italian giants AC Milan.

Fofana would have been an instant standout in Forest's list of arrivals so far this summer, but it now seems as though they'll have no choice but to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements.

Why "wonderful" Fofana would be perfect for Gibbs-White

Forest will now be forced to wonder what might have been when it comes to Fofana, who looks destined for AC Milan.

Nottingham Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White

The Monaco midfielder would no doubt have made an impact, helping to unleash the best form of Morgan Gibbs-White on an even greater level in the Premier League by providing a wall at the base of Forest's midfield. Described as a "wonderful player" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, Fofana will likely steal the headlines wherever he is in European football.

Forest's ambition is impressive nonetheless. The fact that they reportedly made an approach to compete with AC Milan for Fofana's signature suggests that the club is certainly heading in the right direction this summer, perhaps leading to improvement on the pitch next season.
