Outscored Bowen & Fullkrug: West Ham pursuing "stellar" Duran upgrade

Julen Lopetegui and his West Ham United side are gearing up ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign. Having finished ninth last season, the Hammers are looking to return to the European qualification spots.

Reinforcements so far include Wolves central defender Max Kilman, who has already played under Lopetegui, and highly-rated Brazilian winger, Luis Guilherme.

niclas-fullkrug

But West Ham continue to be linked with more transfer activity, including countless striker rumours, one of which is Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug, who scored 16 goals in 46 appearances last season.

West Ham transfer news

According to a report from Sky Sports, West Ham are interested in Villarreal striker, Alexander Sorloth. This comes in a report that states West Ham are advancing for Dortmund striker Fullkrug, but Sorloth has been mentioned as another forward of interest for the Hammers.

This comes after West Ham were unable to find an agreement with Aston Villa for talented forward Jhon Duran, with their previous proposal being rejected. Interest remains in Duran, but there is currently a big gap in valuation.

Villarreal striker Alexander Sorloth

Sorloth made 41 appearances in all competitions for Villarreal last season, scoring 26 goals, providing six assists, and totalling 2,954 minutes of football.

Sorloth vs Duran comparison

Duran made 37 appearances for Aston Villa in all competitions last season, scoring eight goals in 1,103 minutes. However, Duran of course was playing second fiddle to Ollie Watkins, therefore his chances mostly came in the UEFA Conference League.

Sorloth scored more goals than Fullkrug and Duran combined last season, and also beat the record of West Ham's top scorer last campaign, Jarrod Bowen, who scored 20 goals in 44 appearances – the Englishman scoring six fewer goals than Sorloth.

The "stellar" Villarreal striker, as dubbed by Zach Lowy, comes out on top for progressive carries per 90, and touches in the penalty area per 90. However, Duran's metrics are slightly misconstrued, due to his limited minutes for Villa.

Duran takes a high volume of shots in the minutes he plays and has converted at a good rate, actually having a 0.25 Goals/Shot metric, which ranks in the top 7% of strikers in the top five leagues in Europe.

However, Sorloth provides a ready-made product, compared to the potential ability of Duran, as Sorloth performed to these metrics over his 2,954 minutes last season. Despite not winning as many aerials per 90 as Duran or Fullkrug, Sorloth standing at 6 foot 4 still wins 2.84 aerials per 90, and is a major box threat.

If West Ham want a ready-made goalscorer, Sorloth could be their man, having 26 goals last season, and having scored 16 the season prior. The 28-year-old would also come with a point to prove, after his failed spell at Crystal Palace, only scoring one goal for the Eagles back in 2018/19.

They're offering in excess of £17 million to sign the 19-year-old, who made his senior debut for Genk last weekend in their 0-0 draw at home to Standard Liege. Meanwhile, Chelsea have also opened talks with Napoli over Victor Osimhen, with Romelu Lukaku agreeing a three-year deal to head the other way (Ben Jacobs).

A new senior forward, whether that be a striker or winger, looks to be on the agenda at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea attempted to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, before the 22-year-old joined Bayern Munich, with Maresca's side holding an interest in Nico Williams and others as alternatives.

In terms of a natural number nine, Osimhen is a name that will excite plenty of Chelsea supporters, given his stellar reputation and prolific goal-record since joining Napoli from Lille in 2020.

The Nigerian has scored 76 goals in 133 appearances across all competitions at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, but signing him could still be a costly operation, even if Lukaku could be used as a sweetener for the deal.

A cheaper alternative could be Hoffenheim striker Maximilian Beier, and it is believed Chelsea have wasted no time in testing the water in a potential move for the Germany international.

Chelsea submit concrete bid to sign Maximilian Beier from Hoffenheim

Indeed, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea have now submitted a "concrete" bid to sign Beier from Hoffenheim, and they're joined by Aston Villa in the race for his £25 million signature.

The 21-year-old, who scored 16 goals in all competitions for Hoffenheim last season, has also been called "incredibly fast" by Hoffenheim director Alexander Rosen.

England weigh merits of Olly Stone's pace vs Chris Woakes' control for second Test

Joe Root resists temptation to pair Broad and Anderson with heavy itinerary still to come

Matt Roller12-Feb-2021England will make a call between the pace of Olly Stone and the control of Chris Woakes as they decide on an XI for the second Test in Chennai, with Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad and Ben Foakes confirmed as replacements for Dom Bess, James Anderson and Jos Buttler.Joe Root named a 12-man squad in his press conference on Friday morning, with the decision as to which seamer comes into the side to replace the injured Jofra Archer to be made after England’s training session. Stone, who is the quickest available bowler in England’s squad, can hit speeds in excess of 90mph/145kph and is the closest like-for-like replacement for Archer, while Woakes would lengthen their batting line-up and provide greater control. With Buttler returning home as part of England’s rotation policy and Archer ruled out with an elbow injury, England were forced to make at least two changes. And Root confirmed that they would make four: Anderson has been rested ahead of the day-night Test in Ahmedabad, and Bess has been dropped after an inconsistent showing in the first Test. Stone has not played for England in any format since his Test debut against Ireland in July 2019, while Woakes is yet to make an appearance this winter after playing five out of six home Tests last summer.”There’s two different ways we can go,” Root said. “We can have the same balance [in the] side in terms of straight like-for-like swaps with Stone and Broad coming in for Archer and Anderson, or Woakes could come into things as well which adds to the batting and obviously gives us a huge amount of control with the ball.”We will make those decisions off the back of today, look at the wicket, get a bit more information a day out, and either way it looks like we have a very strong squad on this wicket.”Root admitted that he had been tempted to back Anderson to play what would have been his third Test in four weeks following his devastating spell of reverse-swing bowling on the final day of the first Test, but said that his omission was a reflection of England’s desire to keep him fit for the rest of the series.Anderson had vowed to put his “name in the hat” for selection in the second Test after his match-winning efforts in the first, but England have instead opted to continue their ploy of fielding only one of him and Broad in a single side this winter.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“”It gives him [Anderson] the best opportunity to be fit and available for those last two games,” Root said. “Everyone’s heart was in favour of him being available for this game but also you have to look at the bigger picture and ideally if he is available for two of the last three, that is a huge asset for us [with] the way he is bowling and his reputation, as well as his numbers and the way he has performed in recent games.”While it may come as a surprise to see England make four changes on the back of a dominant 227-run win in the first Test, Root said that it demonstrated their depth and their desire to be proactive rather than reactive in ensuring that their bowlers remain fresh throughout the tour.”It’s really important that we go into every game with the attack that we think is best going to exploit 20 wickets [sic] and get the best out of the surface. Whether that comes down to freshness, or making sure that over a series, guys are going to get through with the quick turnaround and the amount of workload that there is in this part of the world… you have to factor everything into it.Related

“We’ve seen since Covid that the number of injuries has probably gone up around world cricket, and we’re trying to stay ahead of that and look after our players, and make sure that guys can get through a Test match and keep adding [to the side], not seeing performances dip off throughout. When you’ve got guys on the sidelines like Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali coming into this game, proven performers in Test cricket, that’s an exciting place to be.”Someone like Stoney, he hasn’t played a huge amount of cricket but has so much potential and excitement about what he can bring to the fore. It’s taken a huge amount of time to build this squad up, but now we’ve got the opportunity to utilise it all and to have that freshness going into games like this. They’ve got a great chance now to show what they can do in an England shirt.”Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood both arrived back in India on Friday, having flown home to rest after the series in Sri Lanka, but Sam Curran has been given a few extra days of down-time. Root confirmed that Foakes will keep wicket in the rest of the series barring injury, and that Bairstow will be considered exclusively as a specialist batsman.Root also said that he expects Archer to be “fully fit and ready to go for the rest of the series” after missing the second Test, and predicted that Ben Stokes would have a bigger role to play with the ball in the second Test after getting through 10 overs across both innings of the first.”He can provide that aggression and it looks like he’s getting fitter and stronger the more he gets into the tour,” Root said. “We had to be quite smart about him in the last game – he looked a bit uncomfortable at times – but the more and more he bowled in each spell he looked more comfortable.”I think he will go from strength to strength as you normally see from Ben – the more he gets into a series the more you get from him. You can bet that in those big moments, he will be the one asking for the ball, trying to change things and make a real impact. It is very exciting that there is more from him to come.”

Keshav Maharaj's 13-wicket match-haul helps Dolphins beat Lions

In other games, Aiden Markram and Kyle Verreynne scored unbeaten double-hundreds

Firdose Moonda10-Mar-2021

Keshav Maharaj picked up 13 wickets in the match against the Lions apart from scoring 89 in the second innings•BCCI

Result summaryThe Dolphins lost to the Lions in the domestic T20 competition final ten days ago but got their own back by ensuring the Lions are out of the running for the first-class trophy. The Dolphins registered an 86-run win at the Wanderers and stand a strong chance of qualifying for the competition’s final. They lie second in Pool A, 1.16 points behind the Knights. The top team from the group will feature in a five-day end-of-season finale against the top team from Pool B.Matters were evenly poised after the first innings before Keshav Maharaj turned things in the Dolphins favour, with bat and ball. The Dolphins posted 375 in their first innings, thanks to Eathan Bosch’s 104 and 40s from Keegan Petersen, Marques Ackerman and Khaya Zondo, but the Lions matched them almost toe-to-toe with 362 in reply. Opener Ryan Rickelton scored the bulk of the Lions runs with 194 and Reeza Hendricks was the only other batsmen to score a half-century. Maharaj took 6 for 126 to rip through the Lions middle and lower order. Then, Maharaj scored a 62-ball 89 to help the Dolphins recover from 96 for 5, thanks to incisive new ball bowling from Beuran Hendricks and Lutho Sipamla, and set the Lions a target of 249, with most of the final day to get it. Maharaj was in action again and studded the Lions second innings with wickets, taking 7 for 48, to finish the match with 13 wickets and give the Dolphins a convincing win. The Lions’ innings featured three ducks, while two more batsmen failed to get into the double figures. The other matches in this round were drawn; the game between the Cape Cobras and the Warriors in Cape Town was affected by rain, while the Titans and Knights involved in a high-scoring contest in Centurion.Only 15 wickets fell in total at Newlands as the Cobras piled on 513 for 6, thanks to a career-best 216 not out from Kyle Verreynne and 107 from George Linde, who recorded his fourth first-class ton. Anrich Nortje, Glenton Stuurman and Tshepo Ntuli took two wickets each as the Warriors used nine bowlers in an effort to dismiss more Cobras’ batsmen. In response, the Warriors were 259 for 9 with lower-order half-centuries from Ayabulela Gqamane and Marco Jansen saving their blushes. Had weather permitted, the Cobras may have been able to push for an innings win, but as things stand, they have not recorded a victory in their last 15 first-class games. At SuperSport Park, the Knights took advantage when they bowled the Titans out for 263 on the first day. Neil Brand’s 107 was the best resistance against rampant Migael Pretorius and Mbulelo Budaza, who shared seven wickets between them. Former Titan Farhaan Behardien then stuck it to his old team-mates with 142, and helped by half-centuries from Raynard van Tonder and Shaun von Berg, got the Knights 151 runs ahead. They declared on 414 for 9. But then, new Test captain Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram set the tone with an opening stand of 213. Elgar was dismissed for 90 but Markram went on to score a career-best 204 not out and hands were shaken soon after he reached the milestone. The Titans are on top of Pool B and play the Lions in their final fixture. The Warriors lie 13.98 points and the Cobras 24.48 points behind, which leaves the possibility of any of these three teams reaching the final.Aiden Markram registered his highest first-class score•Associated Press

On the national radarRuns for Markram and Elgar bode well for South Africa’s opening stand although the Test team does not have any confirmed fixtures in the near future to take advantage of that form. If anything, Markram’s solidifying of his spot at the top of the run-charts likely means that Pieter Malan and Sarel Erwee may not get much of a look in at Test level, especially as Raynard van Tonder continues to push for a call-up. van Tonder is second on the batsmen’s list, 125 runs behind Markram, and has added a second fifty to the two hundreds he has already scored this season.Verreynne’s knock has also come at a crucial time. Faf du Plessis’ retirement has left a hole in South Africa’s middle order and Verreynne is one of the top contenders to fill it. His presence as a back-up wicketkeeper could come in handy, but as things stand, he is making a case to be picked as a batsman alone.Few would have taken Maharaj’s designs on the national captaincy seriously but he has proved his worth to South Africa’s senior core with the way he has performed domestically. After leading the Dolphins to the T20 final, he has almost single-handedly kept them in the running for the first-class title. Maharaj’s 26 wickets are two behind the leader von Berg but Maharaj has played two fewer games and his economy of 2.63 illustrates how miserly he has been.Pretorius, who was part of South Africa’s Test squad that played Sri Lanka, is the top seamer in the competition, with 24 wickets followed by Jansen, who went wicketless in this round. South Africa’s bowling stocks appear healthy with all of Sipamla, Hendricks and Wiaan Mulder taking five wickets each in the Lions’ match against the Dolphins and Sisanda Magala bowling 27 overs in the game is further proof of his commitment to full fitness.Top PerformersRickelton and Behardien’s innings headlined this round for different reasons. Rickelton collected just 49 runs in seven innings in the T20 competition and appeared out of sorts but found form again with a big hundred on his home ground. Behardien, who is 37, made an important statement about the value of experience in the domestic game. South Africa are about to restructure the system and eliminate the franchise tier, a move that will see 75 cricketers lose their jobs, and the fear is that some of those will be players reaching the end of their careers. Behardien has proved why it would be unwise as not only do the stalwarts continue to churn out performances of quality but they set an example for younger players, which South African cricket needs.

Move over Rutter: Leeds could land talisman who’d be perfect for Gnonto

With Georginio Rutter’s £40m move to Brighton edging ever closer to completion, Leeds United will have the mammoth task of trying to replace the 22-year-old before the end of the transfer window.

He may have taken his time to settle into life at Elland Road, but last season he was a crucial cog in Daniel Farke’s side that fell at the final hurdle, losing in the play-off final to Southampton.

The Frenchman registered six goals and 15 assists in his 45 Championship appearances during 2023/24 – ending the campaign as the club’s second-highest goal contributor Crysencio Summerville, who has also left the club during the off-season.

The aforementioned pair contributed to 49 of the 81 goals scored by the Whites in the Championship – highlighting the size of the task Farke has to replace such effective and clinical options.

As a result, he could raid his former club before the end of the window, signing one talent who has proven his goalscoring talent in recent times.

Leeds could land Championship star to replace Rutter

During the transfer window, Leeds have been linked with a plethora of attacking options to try and soften the blow of losing key players such as Summerville and now Rutter.

They’ve previously been linked with a move to sign Norwich City talisman Josh Sargent after his impressive form during the 2023/24 campaign.

Norwich striker Josh Sargent.

The USA forward featured in 26 league matches for the Canaries last time out, scoring 16 goals and registering two assists, helping his side reach the play-offs before the eventual defeat to Farke’s side.

It was previously claimed that it would take a bid over the £10m mark for Norwich to part ways with their star striker, with Leeds now having the funds for such a deal after the recent influx of big-money departures.

His excellent goalscoring record would undoubtedly reduce the loss of other attacking players, whilst also aiding one current star who’s plying his trade at Elland Road.

Why Sargent would be perfect for Gnonto at Leeds

With two weeks remaining in the transfer window, it’s not out of the question that Wilfried Gnonto will remain as a Leeds player, but he has the potential to supercharge their promotion hopes after the recent departures.

Whilst he never matched the figures produced by the likes of Summerville and Rutter, he still contributed with ten goal contributions, which included two goals and an assist in the 4-0 demolition of Swansea City.

Wilfried Gnonto

He would’ve undoubtedly registered more assists should the club have had a more clinical option at the top end of the pitch, with current forwards Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe missing a combined 17 big chances last season.

The “exceptional” Norwich man, as dubbed by teammate Ashley Barnes, was more clinical in front of goal last campaign, finishing with a conversion rate of 24% compared to the Leeds duo who could only muster 15% each.

Such figures would be perfect for Gnonto, who averaged 4.3 progressive passes per 90 whilst also completing 3.1 crosses per 90 – an example of the threat he can provide in the final third.

The Italian also managed 1.8 passes into the final third, alongside 1.5 successful take-ons per 90, proving he has all the ammunition needed to supply Sargent with the opportunity to further increase his already impressive goalscoring tally.

Whilst losing Rutter would be a huge blow for Farke’s side, it gives the club a great opportunity to invest in a similar talent to provide the goods in front of goal.

He’s cemented himself as a fan-favourite at Elland Road, but the pull of the Premier League is irresistible – with Sargent’s goalscoring talents having the ability to allow the supporters to forget about the departing Frenchman.

Sunderland submit new £5m offer for hugely in-demand "outstanding" talent

Sunderland are believed to have submitted a £5m offer for an "outstanding" player, as they look to strike a deal before the end of the transfer window.

Sunderland flying but transfers still on the agenda

It's fair to say that life under Regis Le Bris has got off to a fantastic start at the Stadium of Light, following a superb beginning to the Championship season.

Sunderland sit top of the table on maximum points after three matches, with seven goals scored and a trio of clean sheets also recorded at the same time. Last Saturday's 1-0 victory at home to much-fancied Burnley felt significant, showing that Le Bris' side can go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the division, as hope grows that a serious promotion bid is on the cards.

The Black Cats have suffered the blow of losing star man Jack Clarke to Ipswich Town, however, and they would be wise to use those funds to bring in new attacking signings before the summer transfer window closes. RB Salzburg forward Roko Simic has been linked with a move to the Championship leaders, with Sky Sports even claiming that talks are at an advanced stage.

Meanwhile, Caen attacker Alexandre Mendy has also emerged as a strong summer target for Sunderland in recent times, with a £2m offer lodged and the 30-year-old extremely keen on the idea of moving to the Stadium of Light, looking to get a transfer over the line.

Sunderland submit bid for "outstanding" player

Taking to X, journalist John Percy claimed that Sunderland have now bid £5m for the services of Leicester City attacker Tom Cannon, as they aim to bring him in before Friday's cutoff. Other Championship clubs are planning the same, though, with a big battle for his services looming this week.

Cannon could be a great option for Sunderland, having reached a point in his career where he is likely to want more regular football than he is currently getting at Leicester. The 21-year-old Englishman enjoyed an excellent spell on loan at Preston North End back in 2023, scoring eight goals in 21 appearances, and it led to former Hull City manager Liam Rosenior heaping praise on him.

Cannon's pedigree has been there for all to see since his youth team days at Everton, too, when he scored 51 goals in just 97 appearances for the Blues' Under-21s and Under-18s combined, showing what a prolific marksman he was.

Sunderland would be getting a player with a massive amount of potential whose best years are still to come, leading the line and providing the extra ammunition needed for the Black Cats to remain one of the Championship promotion favourites this season.
