Liam Livingstone leaves IPL 2021 citing 'bubble fatigue'

The England and Rajasthan Royals batter has spent much of the last ten months moving in and out of biosecure environments

Liam Livingstone, the England and Rajasthan Royals batter, has opted to return home early from the IPL, citing “bubble fatigue” after spending much of the last ten months moving in and out of biosecure environments. The Royals said that Livingstone had flown back to the UK on Monday, before India was added to a “red list” of countries from which the arrivals need to undergo a mandatory ten-day quarantine period.Livingstone joined up with the Royals after his involvement in England’s limited-overs series against India in March, which included his ODI debut. However, he had not been selected for any of Royals’ three IPL matches in the ongoing tournament. The 27-year-old was playing at the Pakistan Super League in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic first caused a global shutdown of the cricket calendar. He was named as part of an expanded England training squad in May, as the ECB prepared to stage all of its home matches behind closed doors, and was a reserve squad member for the limited-overs series against Ireland, Pakistan and Australia. He was also an unused back-up on the tour of South Africa in November and December, which was cut short amid concerns that biosecurity protocols had failed, before moving on to the Big Bash League, where he played a key role in getting Perth Scorchers to the final of the competition.Livingstone is not the first player to withdraw from the IPL for such reasons, with Mitchell Marsh telling the Sunrisers Hyderabad he would not be travelling in March. Several England players pulled out of the Big Bash this winter, too, including Tom Banton and Tom Curran, after spending extended time in biosecure environments as cricket boards attempted to fulfil their fixtures while grappling with the pandemic.Livingstone’s return is a positive for his county, Lancashire, who are two matches into the start of their County Championship campaign and will be strengthened in their push for a spot in Division One.

James Bracey shows he's the real deal as Middlesex are muscled to the margins

Runs and an impressive catch cap solid day’s work as Gloucestershire take command

Andrew Miller07-May-2021Middlesex 210 (White 76*, Payne 5-31) and 26 for 3 trail Gloucestershire 273 (Bracey 75, Cockbain 51) by 37 runsThere have been times, during England’s interminable era of bio-secure bubbling, when you’d have been forgiven for wondering whether James Bracey was a figment of the management’s cabin-fevered imagination. Plucked from obscurity to join the 55-man training squad last summer, then stowed away behind closed doors for the best part of a year, was Bracey a MacGuffin of the rest-and-rotation policy? An illusion of options in a squad that isn’t exactly in need of yet another wicketkeeper-batter?For 143 deliveries at Lord’s this afternoon – the majority of them coming in a free-wheeling fifth-wicket stand of 91 with Ian Cockbain – and then with an eye-catching grab behind the stumps in the day’s closing moments, Bracey set out to prove he’s a very real prospect indeed. In spite of the sudden deluge of options at England’s disposal this summer, this performance may yet prove to have been a sighter for his potential Test debut on the same ground against New Zealand next month. After all, the selectors’ secret is out now. They can’t keep him cooped up in an ECB-approved hotel-room for evermore.”I’ve just really enjoyed being back out there,” Bracey said at the close. “I haven’t played a lot of Championship cricket in the past 18 months, so it’s been nice to have a period to get into my stride and go to work.”I’ve come back feeling a bit more responsible and with a bit more experience to contribute to the team, but it’s been a double-edged sword,” he added. “You find yourself getting into a groove of netting and practicing, and finding things to work on, so it’s nice to have that competitive edge back. It’s very different out there to what it’s like on the training ground.”James Bracey drives through the covers•Getty Images

Admittedly, Bracey made just 75 – one fewer than Robbie White compiled for Middlesex on the opening day – and the shot that brought about his downfall was limp, as he pulled his second delivery after tea straight to backward square to fling away the chance of his second hundred of the season, not to mention the chance to turn a handy first-innings lead of 63 into a crushing three-figure advantage. But until that moment, the manner in which he had guided Gloucestershire through the early stirrings of a Middlesex revival was unquestionably classy. At 100 for 4 in the 45th over, with Tim Murtagh and Ethan Bamber leading the line in a typically parsimonious pairing, there had been a danger that the hosts’ total of 210 might prove to be competitive after all.But Bracey, who had stood firm for 20 overs after replacing the nightwatchman Matt Taylor at the hour mark, found in Cockbain a man who was willing to take the calculated risks that Middlesex’s own middle-order had found to be beyond them. Together they cashed in on the change bowlers, Martin Andersson and the young spinner Thilan Wallalawita in particular, to rattle along at close to four an over with 17 fours and a six between them. And by the close, that pair of half-centuries, allied to a feisty cameo of 49 from Ryan Higgins, had been put into proper context by yet another callow batting display from Middlesex. Higgins and David Payne reprised their first-innings dominance to scalp both openers in single figures, before Bracey himself plunged across Kraigg Brathwaite at first slip to extend Peter Handscomb’s abject start to his tenure as Middlesex’s new captain – he’s made 31 runs in five innings now, today’s addition to that tally being a solitary boundary at the halfway mark of a tortuous 31-ball stay.Related

As befits their table-topping status, Gloucestershire will no doubt rue the lapses that denied them an impregnable hold on the contest. Brathwaite’s dismissal was particularly culpable. Cruising along in sunglasses for much of a cloudless morning, he had been batting with typically bloodless obduracy until, on 33, he slashed a touch too greedily at a wide one from James Harris to be plucked at second slip by a diving Sam Robson to end a 121-ball stay. After being punished by Cockbain in particular during a ropey second spell, Andersson put in a feisty late showing to massage his dented figures, as he followed Bracey’s post-tea aberration with an excellent outswinger to snag George Hankins’ edge for 11. But the best of the rest was Harris, and he had a moment of personal satisfaction when Cockbain too dropped his guard, one delivery after bringing up his fifty, and lost his leg stump to a late dipping inswinger. It was Harris’s 500th first-class wicket, due reward for an indomitable career that began as a 16-year-old at Glamorgan and has endured through injury and biomechanical tinkerings for 14 years and counting.Murtagh returned with the new ball to exchange punches with Higgins, who walloped him for a huge six into the Grandstand before being nailed on the knee-roll one ball later and walking for his plumb lbw, before the quietly impressive Bamber grabbed two in as many overs to dock the tail and walk off the field with 2 for 34 in 22.2 overs of unobtrusive diligence. But sadly for Middlesex, such quiet achievement proved out of reach as their second innings got underway. Robson got off to a flyer as Higgins strayed onto his legs with each of his first two deliveries, but those freebie fours were as far as his innings would progress. One over later, Higgins adjusted his line to shape that inswinger into his front pad and Robson was gone for 8. Perhaps his fleeting prospect of an England recall had gone with the moment too, after scores of 165 and 95 in his last two matches at Lord’s.Max Holden gifted Payne his sixth wicket of the match with a looping leading edge that the bowler swallowed with a dive to his left, and Middlesex were still 40 runs in arrears when Bracey put his personal seal on the day to give Taylor the captain’s head on a platter. There’s bad weather in prospect for the resumption on Saturday, but Middlesex know only too well from their local knowledge of Lord’s that is not the good news that sides in their position might once have been praying for. Such is the drainage at this ground that the rain needs only to stop for an instant for play to resume. And if the swing-friendly clouds linger as they are expected to, the gloom in the home dressing room is unlikely to lift in a hurry either.

Wolves senior player now wants to leave after barely playing this season

A European side are looking into signing a senior Wolverhampton Wanderers player in the January transfer window, according to a new report, and he wants to go.

The Midlands side have just come off the back of an extremely busy and frustrating transfer window, as Gary O’Neil hopes he now has enough to tackle the first six months of the Premier League campaign.

Imagine him & Forbs: Wolves make deadline day offer for "unbelievable" ace

The club are desperately trying to bolster their attacking ranks.

ByEthan Lamb Aug 30, 2024 Wolves’ transfer window

Wolves were very busy during the summer transfer window, especially towards the end, as they brought in eight new players. The club’s biggest arrival was midfielder Andre, who joined them on transfer deadline day.

As well as improving the squad, Wolves were unable to get through the transfer window without losing key players, as they saw Pedro Neto and Max Kilman leave Molineaux for big money to Premier League rivals.

While losing these two players, the window could have got better for Wolves were they able to complete a couple of transfers. One player the Premier League side had their eye on was Sassuolo winger Armand Lauriente, with Wolves making an offer for the player.

The attacker enjoyed a successful 2023/24 season with the Italian side despite them being relegated, and those in the Midlands were keen to bring him to Molineux. However, a deal was unable to get over the line before the window slammed shut.

Another player Wolves had their eye on was West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd, as they were interested in a deal before the window closed. The defender fell out of favour with the Hammers, and Wolves were reportedly interested, but he joined Real Sociedad on loan.

The transfer window is now closed for the English teams, but it has emerged that a Wolves player is already being eyed by a European side ahead of the January transfer window.

Wolves player wants to leave and could be sold for pennies

According to Vamos Mi Sevilla, relayed by Sport Witness, La Liga side Sevilla are weighing up a move for Wolves forward Pablo Sarabia, with the player keen to leave the Premier League side.

The report states that Sarabia is not considered a key player for Wolves, and that has given Sevilla hope of landing the player in January, as he also “wants to return to Spain." The 32-year-old has played for the Spanish side before, and they are interested in re-signing him, as they believe he would bring goals and creativity, something they state they are missing now.

Sevilla consider this potential transfer to be a “low-cost operation” given the fact that he is now 32, and he is in the final year of his contract with the Premier League side, meaning by January Wolves would have little negotiating power, especially with the player's stance.

Sarabia joined Wolves in January 2023 from PSG, and since joining the club, he has played 52 times in all competitions, scoring five goals and recording 10 assists. The Spaniard has featured three times for Wolves this season, twice in the league and once in the EFL Cup, but only playing a total of 90 minutes of football spread across the three games.

Dhani, Rizwan help Multan Sultans remain in sight of top-four finish

Maqsood too chips in with bruising half-century as Sultans make it two in two in UAE leg

Danyal Rasool13-Jun-2021

Mohammad Rizwan struck nine fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 56-ball 82•PCB

Mohammad Rizwan’s adjective-defying T20 run shows no signs of abating. On Sunday night, he produced another masterclass as the Multan Sultans coasted to an eight-wicket win over Peshawar Zalmi with 21 balls to spare.Chasing 167, Rizwan never once looked remotely under pressure as he caressed a classy 56-ball 82 without once appearing to take any risks. The flawless chase was merely following on from a fairly error-free effort from the Sultans’ bowlers, who had the wood over the Zalmi batters for much of the innings. Only Sherfane Rutherford’s breezy half-century briefly threatened to leave them with a bigger target.Batting first, Zalmi got themselves into a strong position thanks to evergreen opener Kamran Akmal, but the Sultans bowled well enough to ensured Zalmi never really succeeded in pulling clear. While speeding along to 70 inside the ninth over looked imperious, uncapped Shahnawaz Dhani’s devastating second spell ripped the heart out of the top and middle order.Imran Tahir, operating from the other end, while wicketless, rarely allows too many runs, and with the wickets falling and run-scoring spluttering, Zalmi were visibly fading in the game. A handful of clubbed sixes from Rutherford at the death threatened to rob the Sultans of momentum at the changeover, but a shoddy powerplay from the Zalmi bowlers meant all that advantage was swiftly squandered.Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Irfan operated too often along a leg-stump line Rizwan was working away to a vacant boundary for fun, and with wides and misfields thrown into the mix, it was little surprise to see the 50 brought up in the fifth over.Once Sohaib Maqsood got together with Rizwan, the contrast of styles proved a devastating combination, much too hot for Riaz’s side to handle. If Rizwan was painting his way through his innings, Maqsood was hammering away during his. A whirlwind 31-ball 61 guaranteed this was never going to be allowed to go too deep, and when Rizwan helped a Riaz delivery over fine leg with six to go, it seemed a fitting way to end.The Rutherford Revival
With eight overs to go and Dhani’s four-wicket burst leaving Zalmi reeling, it was Rutherford who ensured what looked set to be a below-par total would end up a somewhat competitive one. Having taken a few balls to bed in, he was content to play second fiddle to David Miller initially. But when Miller holed out thanks to a spectacular catch from Rizwan, Zalmi were running out of batters, and the time for caution was over.A six clubbed back over Blessing Muzarabani’s head began a momentum shift, but the left-hander was only getting started. He would follow it up with a monster hit over square leg the same over, and two more off Sohail Tanvir brought up a 34-ball half-century. Where Zalmi looked like they might meander to 140, 45 runs off the final three overs got them to 166.Dhani’s fluctuating fortunes
Nothing about the way this game began suggested it might be Dhani’s day. He put down a sitter to reprieve Haider Ali in the third over, and went on to leak 15 the first time he came on in the fifth. It was a curious over that involved the veteran Kamran Akmal placing him across the park for three successive boundaries, followed by Rizwan spilling an easy chance to deny Dhani his wicket.Dhani followed it up with a beamer that struck his captain on the shin in an all-round horror show. When he came back for his second spell, Ali greeted him with a swiped six off the first ball. From that nadir, Dhani would turn things around to somehow become the pick of the Sultans bowlers.Akmal and Shoaib Malik were removed off successive deliveries, and Dhani would take two more in a brilliant follow-up over. Ali holed out to mid-off before the dangerous Rovman Powell top-edged a pull thanks to a canny change of pace, leaving Zalmi reeling after a strong start. It helped keep the target manageable and Rizwan, who took a phenomenal catch running backwards to remove Powell, ensured with the bat Dhani’s efforts would not be in vain.Where they stand Multan bolster their chances of finishing in the top four, and are tied with fourth-placed Karachi on six points. Peshawar remain third with eight.

Reporter confirms Derby will be without "clever" summer signing vs Cardiff

Hoping to pick up where they left off before the international break, Derby County will be forced to go for consecutive victories without the help of one of their summer signings against Cardiff City this Saturday.

Derby injury news

Back in the Championship following promotion from League One last season, the Rams have settled well with two wins and two losses in four games representing a solid start.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

It's a start that Paul Warne will hope to see continue despite the disruption of the international break. The aim should be to earn a place in the comforts of mid-table before Christmas in what would be a major step towards survival at the first time of asking, with the visit of Cardiff handing Derby the chance to make it consecutive wins after easing past Bristol City last time out.

It may not be as routine as the 3-0 thrashing of Bristol, however, especially after the international break and with the delay of one summer signing's full Championship debut providing Warne with plenty of frustration.

As confirmed by BBC Derby reporter Dominic Dietrich, Derby will be without Tawanda Chirewa for their clash against Cardiff this Saturday due to concussion protocols following an injury on international duty with Zimbabwe.

Warne revealed the extent of the Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee's injury, telling the press via Derby's official website: "Tawanda has suffered a concussion so he'll miss the next two."

"Clever" Chirewa's frustrating start at Derby

Chirewa completed a summer loan move from Wolves in search of much-needed game time, but is yet to start a single game in the Championship. In fact, the 20-year-old's only minutes have come in the Carabao Cup, as the Rams lost on penalties against Barrow to hand them an early exit against the odds.

Now, fresh back from the international break, the attacking midfielder has suffered a setback in the form of injury and will have to wait a further two games for his league debut.

If the praise of Jairos Tapera – a senior coach in his home country of Zimbabwe – is anything to go by, however, then the Wolves loanee will be worth the wait. Tapera said via Nehanda Radio: “He (Tawanda Chirewa) is excellent, he is a clever young boy. I think we have a gem in Zimbabwe.”

Frustration will of course still be growing, but those at Pride Park must be patient. Chirewa had the quality to earn a move to the Premier League and may yet prove to be a key man under Warne once he receives that Championship chance that he must be craving.
