Queria fazer a torcida feliz’

Ishant Sharma gets stitches on bowling hand but 'expected to recover in time' for England Tests

India, meanwhile, are unlikely to get warm-up matches against English county sides. They will instead play two intra-squad games

Ishant Sharma required multiple stitches on his bowling hand after sustaining an injury on the last day of the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, but the pacer is expected to be fit in time for India’s five-match Test series against England that starts on August 4.Sharma tried to stop a drive from Ross Taylor in what turned out to be the penultimate over of the final. He left the field with his hand bleeding, having bowled only two balls in his seventh over, with Jasprit Bumrah completing it.”Ishant has had multiple stitches on his middle and fourth finger in his right hand. However, it is not very serious,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI. “The stitches will be off in around ten days and with six weeks left for the first Test against England, he is expected to recover in time.”Related

Why did India lose the plot in one hour on the last day of the WTC final?

Final defeat leaves India's batting in the spotlight

The Indian team is having a break of three weeks after the conclusion of the WTC final, which New Zealand won by eight wickets.”The squad travelled together to London. From here they can all leave for their respective destinations within the UK for a 20-day break,” the official said. However, once the team reassembles in London on July 14 and proceeds to Nottingham, they are unlikely to get warm-up first-class matches against English county sides. They will instead play two intra-squad games at the Riverside ground in Durham. After the WTC final, India captain Virat Kohli had expressed his desire for warm-up games.”Well, that doesn’t depend on us. We obviously wanted first-class games, which I believe have not been given to us,” Kohli had said. “I don’t know what the reasons for that are. But yeah, other than that I think our preparation time will be ample for us to be ready for the first Test.”While it is understood that the BCCI had requested the ECB for a few practice games, the Covid-19 situation won’t allow any such plan to go ahead.”Due to Covid-19 protocols, they will play two intra-squad four-day matches before the first Test in August,” an ECB spokesperson told PTI on Friday. Asked if there is any chance of a game against county sides, the spokesperson said, “No”.In England, cricketers from various counties are regularly being tested for Covid-19 but are not being kept in any bubble. But the Indian team would again be in a bubble once they move to Durham.”The domestic cricketers of England not being in a bubble is an issue for sure. That’s why the games in Durham will be intra-squad ones,” the BCCI official said.India are currently travelling with 24 players – 20 in the official squad and four reserves – which would thus allow them to play intra-squad games.

Celtic set to make "strong" £17k-p/w ace one of Rodgers’ highest earners

Following an excellent start to their campaign, Celtic are reportedly set to reward one player with a bumper new deal to put him among Brendan Rodgers' highest earners.

Celtic's perfect start

With five wins from five games and just the one goal conceded, it's fair to say that Celtic couldn't have enjoyed a much better start than the one they've managed in pursuit of retaining their Scottish Premiership crown once again. The Bhoys have even already got one over on Old Firm rivals Rangers, easing past the Gers in a convincing 3-0 victory.

Rodgers' side will now be tasked with picking up where they left off after the international break, with the return of the Champions League – and a new format at that – throwing up fresh challenges.

Amid that challenge, meanwhile, one player is already set to receive a reward for such a fine start to the campaign. According to Football Scotland, Celtic are now set to offer Alistair Johnston a new deal which will see him become one of the club's highest earners.

As things stand, the right-back earns a reported £17,000-a-week at Celtic, but a new deal could see him jump up to around the £30k-a-week mark with highest-earner Callum McGregor earning a reported £32k-a-week.

The pay rise is more than deserved, it must be said, Johnston has enjoyed a flying start to the campaign, starting every game in Celtic's dominant opening run and even getting a goal as well as an assist to his name in the process.

"Strong" Johnston will only get better

Since battling back from injury at the start of last season, Johnson has become more and more vital to Rodgers' title-winning side at Celtic and is only likely to continue that improvement with a new contract to match his quality. The full-back, who can also play right-midfield and centre-back proved his eye for attacking contributions in the last campaign with seven assists in all competitions and is now even showcasing his eye for goal against St. Mirren.

Earning plenty of praise from Rodgers last season, the Celtic boss said via Herald Scotland: “I remember seeing him at the World Cup. He was outstanding for Canada. I thought at the time when he arrived in January it was a really good buy for Celtic.

"He’s a talented player and you get the sense from talking to him he’s very ambitious and committed. He wants to do well. It’s just been a real shame with the injury he’s had that he’s been out. But Alistair is a really strong boy and speaking to the staff and the players, he’s really highly rated here. I’m looking forward to seeing him more.”

When the Premiership returns, there's no doubt that Johnston will be among the in-form players to watch at Celtic Park.

Andy Flower, the Trent Rockets head coach, will be absent from Monday’s men’s Hundred fixture against Northern Superchargers, alongside two other members of the team’s support staff, after the trio tested positive for Covid-19.Steven Mullaney and another support staff member have also been withdrawn from the evening fixture, after being identified as close contacts, with Paul Franks stepping in as Trent Rockets’ head coach. The development looks set to force Flower and his colleagues to self-isolate for the next ten days, a period that that encompasses two more Rockets fixtures, both of them away – against London Spirit at Lord’s on July 29, and against Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston on August 1.The former England head coach, who has been a fixture on the T20 franchise circuit in recent seasons, took over as Rockets’ head coach in February, when their original choice, Stephen Fleming, withdrew due to the ongoing Covid-related travel restrictions.Mullaney, Nottinghamshire’s club captain, played in Rockets’ opening fixture of the Hundred, a nine-wicket win against Southern Brave on Saturday, meaning that the team will be required to make at least one change to that victorious line-up.Trent Rockets is also the Hundred team of the England Test captain, Joe Root – and with nine days to go until the first Test against India, also at Trent Bridge, the news will be of particular concern to the ECB, which was forced to pick a brand-new ODI squad for their series against Pakistan earlier this month following a dressing-room outbreak during the preceding Sri Lanka series.Covid has also wreaked havoc on the county circuit this month, with Derbyshire forced to abandon their Championship match against Essex before pulling out of the Vitality Blast, and Kent fielding a team comprised of second XI and club players for their recent fixure against Sussex.

Liverpool chiefs eyeing move to sign "unique" £30k-p/w defender for Slot

Liverpool and Arne Slot are keeping tabs on a new defender ahead of a potential summer move, it has been revealed, with the Reds’ backline in need of reinforcements.

Liverpool's defensive concerns

Though they have conceded just two goals in five games so far this season, there are longer-term concerns over the Liverpool defence. Of the Premier League winning back four, all of Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold remain, but the Scot and Van Dijk are now over 30 years old (33 in Van Dijk’s case) and there are concerns over Alexander-Arnold’s future amid interest from Real Madrid and an unclear contract stance.

Liverpool star looked "like Coutinho" when he joined, then Slot sold him

Will the Reds come to rue this decision?

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 19, 2024

A centre-back is on their shopping list as they look to rejuvenate their backline, but there are also concerns at left-back. Kostas Tsimikas has been a valuable understudy but is unlikely to be able to take the first-choice mantle from Robertson, meaning that a new left-back may be required.

With that in mind, the Reds are keeping tabs on one Premier League star, and will have a chance to see him up close and personal this weekend.

Liverpool join queue for Premier League defender

That comes as Liverpool have been named as one of the sides keeping a close eye on Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez, who can also play higher up in midfield or as a wing-back. The defender has also been on the radar of Manchester United in recent months, but is just 12 months into his £30,000 a week “long term” contract at the Vitality Stadium, and is unlikely to be available on the cheap.

That has not stopped interest from mounting though, and Liverpool are the latest side reportedly keeping tabs on the Hungarian international, who shares a dressing room with Dominik Szoboszlai on international duty.

As per TEAMtalk, the Reds are “continuing to watch” the young defender as they plan for a future beyond their current options, and that his name “continues to come up again and again” in scouting reports compiled at Anfield.

It is added that given his age and relative experience, the defender is “a prime candidate”, but that they will have to fight off several other clubs around Europe to secure him. Manchester United are named as the most obvious of those, and it is claimed that it would have set any interested party back “over £40 million” to secure his signature over the most recent transfer window, a fee which is unlikely to drop as he continues to impress in the Premier League.

Former teammate Mat Ryan revealed what Bournemouth should expect from their new defender when he made the move, hailing his “unique skill set” and backing him for success in the Premier League.

“He is aggressive, powerful and has so many qualities. A unique skill set. Bournemouth is going to get stronger because of him. Milos still has a great career ahead of him.”

Now, it appears that the Hungarian is living up to that prediction, and could be set to provoke a scrap for his signature next summer, one which Liverpool will be hoping to win.

Phil Simmons: West Indies' batters have to work out how to get big scores

The home side’s bowling continued to impress but they rarely had runs to play with

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Aug-2021

The returns of West Indies’ top order continue to be under the spotlight•Getty Images

West Indies coach Phil Simmons has put the onus back on the team’s batting to be better at assessing conditions after they again struggled to build substantial scores against Pakistan, although he insisted there are signs of improvement.”We see that we can bat,” Simmons told the host broadcaster. “We are spending 110 balls for 50 runs but it’s how we read the situation of the game. We might be batting well, like we saw in the first innings then the ball started swinging a little bit more. We’ve got to assess those situations in order for us to get the big scores. We’ve seen a more controlled approach to the start of everyone’s innings, but we have to work out how we go from the 40s and 50s to the 100s and 150s.”The Caribbean has to continue backing us. From a point of view that we are seeing improvement in the fact that guys are trying to do the things that are necessary for us to be a better Test batting team. The bowling has been exceptional – it carries its weight and pulls the team – but the batters have to sit down and work out how to get to the scores we want to get. We need the backing, the batsmen need the encouragement. We don’t see what’s happening in the background, but they are working hard.”Related

The series was shared 1-1 after the visitors secured a 109-run victory on the final day at Sabina Park after West Indies had clung on for a one-wicket in in the opening match.Overall in the four recent Tests against Pakistan and South Africa, West Indies’ highest innings total has been 253 across eight attempts, with just five half-centuries and no hundreds from their batters. None of the batters averaged 30, with Jermaine Blackwood’s return of 223 runs at 27.87 the best although they had been more successful against Sri Lanka earlier in the year. When pressed on whether there were other batters who could come into consideration who are currently part of West Indies’ limited-overs side, Simmons said that it would not serve anyone’s benefit to force players into the Test format.”The first thing is a want to play Test cricket. We can say what we want, [but] Test cricket is not easy,” he added. “The first day of this match was unbelievable with the heat so you have to want [it], you have to have that desire, that conviction to play Test cricket.”Maybe be out there for a day-and-a-half and then come and bat. It’s for guys to want to play, we know the ones who are capable. But if you don’t have that want, you can’t do it. [It] makes no sense us selecting you and forcing you to play Test cricket and then you are just out there. West Indies always have talented players. Learning to play Test cricket can be easy, but you have to want to put in the work. You [see the] Babar Azams and Kane Williamsons, they put in a lot of extra work. So we keep pushing guys to do that.”The lack of first-class cricket due to the pandemic has not helped the preparation for Tests either, but once a full domestic schedule is able to resume, Simmons hoped there would be a focus on the pitches.”We’ve got to make sure our first-class cricket comes back as we settle down in the pandemic and guys are playing more,” he said. “We have to make our grounds better in terms of our pitches so our guys are able to bat and improve [and] bat longer. There’s quite a few things we can do to push ourselves to the next level.”
