He’s outscoring Salah: Newcastle want to sign £50m Almiron upgrade

Newcastle United have a big one coming up this weekend, away against Everton in the Premier League. Defeat at Fulham almost two weeks ago was forgotten after a tremendous display kept Manchester City at bay last Saturday, but now, Eddie Howe’s side need three points.

The October international break is approaching, with the trip to Goodison the last before the two weeks of domestic absence. Newcastle are seventh with 11 points from six matches, but failure to win could quite conceivably see fourth-placed Chelsea stretch five points ahead of the Magpies, hosting Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

So then, Newcastle need to win. Everton claimed their first top-flight victory of the term against Crystal Palace last week and have escaped the confines of the relegation zone, but their dreadful start to the season will have done enough to convince the Toon support that they should be defeated.

Reports suggest Alexander Isak will have failed to regain his fitness after missing the past two fixtures. This means Anthony Gordon will likely deputise at centre-forward once again, with Harvey Barnes on the right and… Jacob Murphy on the right? Miguel Almiron?

It’s a little uninspiring. Newcastle needed to address their right-wing issue during the summer but failed to do so, and with Almiron being linked with a January exit, it’s quite clear that a blunder was made.

The latest on Miguel Almiron's future at Newcastle

According to TEAMtalk, Everton are joined by MLS and Saudi Pro League clubs in eyeing a deal for Almiron this January, with the 30-year-old winger nearing the end of the line at St. James’ Park.

Miguel Almiron for Newcastle

Almiron is in the penultimate year of his contract and has played a bit-part role this season; the more robust Murphy has been preferred on the right side of the frontline.

And it’s understandable. The brilliant purple patch of 2022/23 seems like a long way away now, for Almiron bagged only three Premier League goals last season and has bagged just two Premier League minutes so far this season.

It’s time to go. Newcastle must cash in while they can still fetch a transfer fee, especially since the former club-record signing will be well aware of the Magpies’ efforts to sign an upgrade in the summer – a £50m bid was placed for Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga at the end of the window, but it was rejected.

The need for a ferocious flanker remains. If anything, Newcastle’s resolve has only been strengthened. Almiron is being pushed toward the exit, perhaps because Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is being targeted. The aforementioned report claims as much.

Imagine Bryan Mbeumo at Newcastle

Newcastle have triumphed in convincing Gordon to sign a new contract with the club, but he plies his finest art on the left and, as Barnes does too, a player of Mbeumo’s ilk would be the perfect addition.

TEAMtalk’s aforementioned report revealed that Newcastle are scouting Mbeumo, aged 25, as they mull over launching an official offer in 2025. Almiron’s expected departure could accelerate plans and strengthen United’s bid to reclaim their place in the Champions League.

Mbeumo has proved himself over the past few years with Brentford, a stead scorer across each of his four Premier League campaigns, notching 27 goals and 21 assists across 104 matches in total.

Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo

He stepped up his game last year and has done so once again in 2024/25, with the Frenchman’s five-goal haul from the Bees’ opening six fixtures placing him among the division’s finest shooters – even surpassing the goal tallies of superstars like Mohamed Salah.

This is quite something, but Thomas Frank’s main man is hardly just a one-trick pony. As per FBref, he ranks among the top 8% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, passes attempted and progressive passes and the top 7% for progressive carries per 90, emphasising his athleticism and technique.

One thing’s for certain, he’d be an upgrade on Almiron, having already surpassed the Newcastle ace’s haul from last season. During the summer, it was said that Brentford wanted The Bees a fee in excess of £50m for the versatile forward’s sale, and that could be even higher now that he has taken Ivan Toney’s place as the star striker at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Last season, The Athletic’s Jay Harris remarked that Mbeumo “cannot be stopped” in front of goal, with his prolific performances putting him in certain conversations with the likes of Salah and Arsenal phenomenon Bukayo Saka.

Now, he’s got a fantastic chance to produce his finest term yet on English shores, perhaps fuelled by the knowledge that Newcastle are hoping to sign him and bring him to Tyneside.

There’s a vacancy on the right in Howe’s system, and this talented player might just fit the bill.

Diego Souza saiu do Grêmio.

Jadeja magic takes CSK back to first spot with last-ball win over KKR

With 24 required from ten balls, he smashed Prasidh Krishna for 20 runs in four balls

Peter Della Penna26-Sep-20213:08

Did the missing Andre Russell over hurt KKR’s defence?

Needing 34 from 21 balls with seven wickets in hand, Chennai Super Kings looked like they may have thrown away a simple chase as Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni all fell within the space of six balls. But Super Kings still had one more ace up their sleeve in Ravindra Jadeja, who crushed Kolkata Knight Riders’ victory hopes in the space of a devastating four-ball sequence in the 19th over as Super Kings eventually got over the line on the final ball in a dramatic two-wicket win on Sunday afternoon in Abu Dhabi. With the equation down to 24 from ten balls, Jadeja left Prasidh Krishna shellshocked after clocking a pair of sixes over the leg side followed by two fours over point to swing the pendulum Super Kings’ way. With four required from the final over, Sunil Narine stretched the match to the limit with a valiant effort, dismissing Sam Curran at the start of the over and Jadeja off the penultimate ball before Deepak Chahar ended the teasing thought of a Super Over with a single over midwicket to clinch victory and put Super Kings back on top of the IPL table with 16 points, ahead of Delhi Capitals on net run rate.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

Thakur’s sharp spell
Super Kings’ bowling performance was topsy-turvy. Curran had a poor day coming into the XI as a replacement for the rested Dwayne Bravo, conceding 0 for 56 before his 4 off four balls late in the chase. But that was made a footnote in the end thanks to the efforts of Jadeja and Shardul Thakur. The latter took 2 for 20 off his four overs and began the day in style with a wicket-maiden after entering in the sixth over. Venkatesh Iyer was caught behind, but needlessly burnt a review on a straightforward decision in the process, to kick off Thakur’s day.Thakur continued to keep things tight heading into the death overs and struck an even bigger blow in the 17th. Andre Russell had just clattered Curran for a pair of fours and a six but Thakur managed to wrest back momentum by inducing a drag on to dismiss Russell for 20 off 15 balls, denying Knight Riders their best weapon for a late launch. Dinesh Karthik still managed a superb cameo with 26 off 11 balls before he fell in the final over to Josh Hazlewood, but much of the damage that could have been possible with Russell at the crease was mitigated by Thakur.Super Kings’ forty duo
Chasing a target of 172 may have looked steep on the same pitch where Rajasthan Royals failed miserably in their reply to Delhi Capitals’ 154 a day earlier. But Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad got the Super Kings off to a phenomenal start with a 74-run opening partnership. du Plessis kept the scoreboard flowing early with a pair of boundaries off Varun Chakravarthy in the fourth over as Gaikwad took time to get his feet wet.But Gaikwad took on Narine in the fifth over, using his feet expertly to loft a four and six straight down the ground. Two overs later, Gaikwad again cleared the rope against Narine with a pull before smashing Russell back over his head for a third six in the ninth over. Gaikwad’s knock finally came to an end one ball later for 40, flicking a leading edge to cover, but he and du Plessis had laid a solid platform for the rest of the Super Kings batters to continue to seize upon.Ravindra Jadeja smashed 22 off eight balls•BCCI

A head-swivel, see-saw finish
To say there were more than a few momentum shifts in the final hour of play would be an understatement. Moeen came to the crease like a house on fire, bashing Lockie Ferguson for four and six over the leg side to end the tenth over before he and du Plessis rocked Russell for a boundary each in the 11th to leave 71 needed from the final 54 balls. But Prasidh induced a catch at deep cover to remove du Plessis for 43 before Narine came back to defeat Ambati Rayudu’s slog in the 15th. Still, it should have been a canter with 40 needed off the final four overs for Super Kings but Eoin Morgan’s captaincy made them sweat until the final ball. With Russell off the field injured, Morgan got creative shuffling his remaining bowlers around and nearly rallied his team to an unlikely comeback in the field. Moeen holed out to long-on off Ferguson in the 17th for 32 before Raina was run out coming back for a non-existent second to start the 18th. Two balls later, Varun defeated MS Dhoni with a googly for 1 to cap a six-ball slide of three wickets for 4 runs, leaving the score at 142 for 6.Prasidh was handed the ball for the 19th and conceded just singles off the first two balls. But with Jadeja back on strike, a slower ball landed horribly short on the legs and was punished over the square-leg rope. Overcorrecting on the next ball, he sent one too full, and Jadeja sent it over long-on for six more. Attempting wide yorkers off the last two balls of the over, neither one landed as Jadeja slapped a pair of full tosses over point to the rope. With four from six needed, Narine did not give up. Curran charged and drove a catch to long-off and failed to cross Jadeja with the ball in the air. Thakur arrived on strike and after a dot, clipped a three through fine leg to level the scores. Jadeja then missed two hacks off his pads trying to end the match and paid the price on the second as Narine’s lbw appeal was upheld on the field and on DRS too. But Chahar ensured Jadeja’s efforts did not go to waste and capped Super Kings’ day with a slog over the infield for the winning run.

Celtic messed up with rarely-seen signing who’s now worth less than Scales

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was backed by the board in the recent summer transfer window, as he brought in a host of new signings to bolster the squad.

Arne Engels, Adam Idah, Paulo Bernardo, Auston Trusty, Luke McCowan, Viljami Sinisalo, and Kasper Schmeichel arrived on permanent deals, whilst Alex Valle signed on loan from Barcelona.

Trusty joined from Championship side Sheffield United and has started the last three games in all competitions, amid Cameron Carter-Vickers’ absence, alongside Liam Scales.

He has been picked ahead of centre-back Maik Nawrocki to partner the Ireland international in these recent games, and it appears as though the Hoops have had a mare with the Polish flop.

How much Celtic paid for Maik Nawrocki

In the summer of 2023, Carl Starfelt left to join Celta Vigo and that left Rodgers in need of reinforcements at the back, which led to the signing of Nawrocki from Legia Warsaw.

The Scottish giants reportedly splashed out a fee of £4.3m to sign the 22-year-old colossus, seemingly in the hope that he would partner Carter-Vickers at the back.

As you can see in the table above, Nawrocki played regular football for Legia Warsaw in the Ekstraklasa during the 2022/23 campaign, showcasing his dominant defensive work and his comfort in possession.

Unfortunately, though, the right-footed titan did not translate that over to the Scottish Premiership for Celtic and his value has plummeted during his time in Scotland.

Maik Nawrocki's current market value

At the time of writing (10/10/2024), Transfermarkt has his current market value at €3m (£2.5m) and that is less than the £4.3m that the Hoops paid for him just over a year ago.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Meanwhile, Scales has a market value of €3.5m (£2.9m) on Transfermarkt, which means that the Irish star is currently more valuable than the Polish dud.

That makes sense when you consider that the former Aberdeen loanee was the player who stepped up to become Carter-Vickers’ centre-back partner under Rodgers last season, rather than Nawrocki.

Scales went on to play in 34 of the club’s 38 Premiership matches, starting 33 times, and started all six of Celtic’s games in the Champions League. His performances even earned him a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year, alongside Carter-Vickers.

Nawrocki, meanwhile, only made ten appearances in the league, starting seven times, and did not make a single outing in the Champions League, which means that he has rarely been seen in a Hoops jersey since his arrival last year.

The 23-year-old flop has also yet to feature in the league or in Europe this term and has been an unused substitute four times, with one appearance off the bench against Falkirk in the League Cup, as Carter-Vickers, Scales, and Trusty have all been preferred ahead of him.

Celtic have found their new Jota in "magical" Hoops star

The Hoops star has enjoyed a phenomenal start to the 2024/25 campaign.

ByDan Emery Oct 9, 2024

Therefore, Celtic messed up with the signing of Nawrocki from Legia Warsaw as they paid £4.3m for a player who is not currently one of the top three first-choice options for Rodgers in his position, and his value has plummeted well below that price over the last 14 months.

Leeds ace who left under Bielsa is now being compared to a £100m hero

It’s rare you get many managers who completely change football for the better. Leeds United and Elland Road have had one of the greats in Marcelo Bielsa, a coach who has inspired perhaps the greatest we’ve ever seen in Pep Guardiola.

Coincidentally, it does seem to be within the English game that these revolutionary managers rear their heads. Of the last few decades, think Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, think Jose Mourinho, think Jurgen Klopp. Yeah, the Premier League has been a pretty special place.

Former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.

All of them have their intricacies but Bielsa – despite his trophy record saying otherwise – should stand proud as one of the most iconic managers we’ve seen on these shores.

He was a lovely bloke, let’s be honest, but some of his methods were bizarre. Naming the entire starting XI in your press conference? Yep, Bielsa did that. Ordering his team to concede a goal against Aston Villa? The former Leeds boss did that too.

Marcelo Bielsa

It was a hell of a ride, wasn’t it? It may have ended in the Argentine’s sacking from his position in West Yorkshire but that promotion will never be forgotten. At long, long last, Leeds were finally dining at the top table again.

He’s also made some pretty fine careers for those he tutored…

Leeds' best players under Marcelo Bielsa

Perhaps Bielsa’s finest achievement at Leeds, promotion aside, was the rise of Kalvin Phillips.

The Leeds-born midfielder was an unsuspecting young prospect at the time, a player who no doubt had hopes of reaching England’s top flight but would probably be condemned to the Championship.

Kalvin Phillips

Well, the Argentine coach put his faith in Phillips and turned him into one of the second-tiers best players.

Under Bielsa, the now 28-year-old made 131 appearances, scoring five times and registering eight assists. He was all-action, he was imperious, he was a fan favourite and that was largely thanks to Bielsa.

Whatever you think of Phillips now, prior to his move to Manchester City he was one of the most impressive holding midfielders in England, dominating in the centre of the park en route to the Euro 2020 final with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.

There have been some others, though. Raphinha – who scored a famous hat-trick against Bayern Munich in the Champions League a few days ago – had a period of time with Bielsa, while the likes of Pablo Hernandez and Mateusz Klich must be celebrated too. Players such as Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas deserve their flowers too.

Raphinha

But, there were some who perhaps left too early. Leeds lodged three unsuccessful bids for Ben White and as such, he only enjoyed one season under Bielsa.

Jack Clarke arguably left a bit too early too.

Jack Clarke's story after leaving Leeds

Shine in the Championship as a young individual and a Premier League move will come calling. Leeds found that out with three players this summer; Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray all moving on.

Yet, back in the summer of 2019, it was Clarke who was earning his big move to the Premier League. Like Gray, he headed off to Spurs but this time the fee was smaller, joining in a £10m deal.

Since then, the young winger’s career has been a case of trial and error. The 23-year-old never made the grade at Tottenham, featuring for the first team on just four occasions before Sunderland snapped him up.

It was in the North East where Clarke made a name for himself with some devastating performances for the Black Cats.

He scored 28 goals and supplied 23 assists before, like a host of Leeds players a few months ago, was poached by one of England’s top clubs.

The York-born forward is now at Ipswich following a £15m move and despite not hitting the ground running in thrilling fashion, has delivered some impressive displays.

Clarke has just the one Premier League goal involvement to his name at the moment, supplying Liam Delap’s opening goal against Aston Villa prior to the international break, but it was a piece of play that drew a remarkable comparison from Sky Sports’ Alan Smith.

Looking at the young attacker’s slicked-back hair, low socks and mazy dribbling ability, Smith remarked that he “has a bit of Grealish about him.” Fine praise indeed considering the England star’s lofty £100m valuation.

The way he assisted that goal was certainly Grealish-esque, keeping hold of the ball in a tight space, manoeuvring it in a similar way at the byline before cutting the ball back. The pre-assist for that goal? Well, it came from Phillips – funny how football works out, isn’t it?

At the age of just 23, there is much more to come from Clarke and we can’t wait to see how he performs at Ipswich throughout the rest of the season.
