Sri Lanka Women to not tour Pakistan in October as SLC-PCB talks fall through

Sri Lanka Cricket are hopeful of the tour possibly going ahead sometime before the 2022 World Cup

Talks about a potential tour of Pakistan by the Sri Lankan women’s team later this month have hit a stumbling block following a change in management at the PCB. As a result, the series will not be taking place in October but both boards are working to find a window for it before the 2022 ODI World Cup.Earlier this week, the SLC had seemed confident of the tour going ahead, with three ODIs and a practice game all but rubber-stamped. It would have been Sri Lanka’s first taste of international cricket since the T20 World Cup in February-March last year.Related

However, PCB sources said they were finding it tough to arrange the matches on such short notice given the administrative changes the board is currently undergoing. It is also understood that some of the Pakistan players were unavailable for an assignment in October.SLC, for their part, are hopeful of the tour going ahead sometime before the World Cup, which is scheduled for March-April next year.”These were ongoing discussions, but with the change in management, it seems that they’re finding it difficult to find a window for us,” SLC CEO Ashley De Silva told ESPNcricinfo. “We’re hopeful of doing it before the World Cup. If everything goes well, we will see if we can fit in before then.”The next scheduled assignment for both teams is the ODI World Cup global qualifier starting November 21 in Zimbabwe.

Le Bris provides Patterson injury update after missing Sunderland vs Oxford

After one Sunderland mainstay missed the Black Cats’ 2-0 victory over Oxford United, manager Regis Le Bris has provided an update on his fitness in a major boost for those at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland injury news

Sunderland were once again in fine form to maintain their top spot in the Championship with a 2-0 victory over Oxford. On another impressive afternoon, it was Jobe Bellingham who opened the scoring with his second goal of the season before Wilson Isidor once again stole the show to keep up his ruthless streak in front of goal. Scoring his second goal in three games, the forward is finding form at the perfect time ahead of a busy festive period.

It wasn’t all good news for Sunderland and their in-form forward, however, after he limped off injured. And although Le Bris assured reporters that the injury is not serious, the Black Cats will be awaiting a final verdict. The Sunderland boss said, as relayed by Sports Illustrated: “With Wilson, it also seems not to be a big problem. He received a contact on his knee, I don’t think this is a big problem.”

Meanwhile, the same can be said for one other mainstay. As revealed by Le Bris and reported by Sports Illustrated, Anthony Patterson’s injury is not serious despite his omission from the squad to face Oxford this weekend. Le Bris provided an update on Patterson whilst praising his deputy Simon Moore, telling reporters: “We don’t know exactly at the minute, but it shouldn’t be too serious.

“We saw today that Simon did well. Even with few actions, you can feel if a player is in the game and at the level, and he was. He prepared very well for this since the start of the summer, so serious and clear in the way he prepares every day. He deserved this performance, and we were so confident in him today.”

He has already become an undroppable figure.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 25, 2024 Patterson is key to Sunderland promotion push

As solid as Moore was against Oxford, Sunderland will be keen to get their number one back as soon as possible. Whether that means that Patterson is back to face Queens Park Rangers next Saturday remains to be seen, however, Le Bris will certainly hope that proves to be the case, but his own verdict suggests that the Black Cats are in for a nervous wait.

Still just 24 years old, Patterson is a goalkeeper destined for the Premier League and one who is making a charge towards the Championship’s Golden Glove award after keeping six clean sheets in 11 games and conceding nine goals.

Whether his recent progress helps Sunderland on their way to shock promotion is not yet known, but he and the rest of his teammates have certainly started the season well in pursuit of the Premier League. Now five points clear at the top of the Championship, new manager Le Bris could not have asked for a better start to life in Wearside.

WBBL round-up: Heat hang on, Devine's wins another Super Over, Sixers slump again, Thunder off the mark

A recap of the latest action from the WBBL with four matches taking place on Saturday

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Oct-2021

Grace Harris made 75 from 51 balls•Getty Images

Dominant half-centuries from Grace Harris and Georgia Redmayne have helped Brisbane Heat regain top spot on the WBBL table after a tight win over Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston.Mignon du Preez gave Heat a fright in the chase making 73 from 49 balls, but Jess Jonassen took 3 for 25 as the Heat held on by 14 runs.Harris became the WBBL’s leading runscorer with 75 from 51 balls while Redmayne continued her excellent form making 64 from 50 deliveries. The Heat openers piled on a 140-run partnership in just 15 overs. Harris had enough time left to reach three figures after thrashing six fours and two sixes, but she was run out having been sent back by Redmayne attempting an ambitious second run.The run out stalled Heat’s momentum as they scored just 30 runs from the last 29 balls. Redmayne was out off the last ball of the 19th over, having struck nine boundaries in her 64.Hurricanes’ chase got off to a disastrous start with Rachel Priest and Ruth Johnston falling cheaply in the powerplay, with Jonassen claiming the key scalp of the Hurricanes captain. Mignon du Preez held the innings together with an outstanding innings that kept the Hurricanes in it. The South African veteran got great support from Nicola Carey during an 87-run stand. They reduced the chase to just 34 from 21. But du Preez was strangled down the leg side off Anneke Bosch.Carey fell three balls later to all but end the Hurricanes’ hopes. Heat held their nerve with Jonassen returning in the 19th over to pick up a third wicket. Nicola Hancock had 18 runs to play with in the final over and picked up three wickets for just four runs to close out the match.
Another Super Over, another win for Sophie Devine•Getty Images

A Super Over. Sophie Devine. You know how this ends, right? For the second time this season Perth Scorchers got across the line the decider and on this occasion it took Devine just two balls – both hit for six against Megan Schutt – to get the job done over Adelaide Strikers who had only been able to muster nine from their six deliveries. It was tough on Schutt who, in the initial 20-over contest, had made an excellent return in her first game of the season. Her first three overs cost just nine in what was overall a very impressive display by Strikers which also included the outstanding figures of Amanda-Jade Wellington who took 2 for 12 with 14 dot balls.Wellington’s spell ensured Scorchers couldn’t really build on an opening stand of 59 between Devine and Beth Mooney. Devine only managed a run-a-ball before falling to a tight stumping call and Wellington would go on to claim both Mooney and Chamari Athapaththu. Scorchers could only make 57 off their last 10 overs. However, they defending superbly in the field with Lilly Mills’ offspin again impressive and at 7 for 88 they were favourites for victory. But Tegan McPharlin and Sarah Coyte took the game deep until two were needed off the last ball but they could only score a single. Marizanne Kapp then did her bit with the ball, aided by a superb boundary save by Alana King fourth ball. Devine did hers with the bat.Harmanpreet Kaur raced out of the blocks in her innings•Getty Images

Well-paced innings by Harmanpreet Kaur and Jess Duffin followed by an important brace of wickets for Ellie Falconer took Melbourne Renegades top of the table – at least briefly – against a Sydney Sixers sides heading the opposition direction. After Renegades lost two wickets in the powerplay things were rebuilt by Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues as the pair added 51 in six overs. That was aided by Harmanpreet’s brisk start as she was 14 off three balls having dispatched a free hit from Stella Campbell for six second delivery. She eventually fell to India team-mate Radav Yadav but Duffin, who struck two wickets, took 17 off the final over from Nicole Bolton.Sixers had restructured their batting order with a return to opening for Ellyse Perry but they stumbled again. Alyssa Healy missed a wild stoke against Sophie Molineux and Ash Gardner was run out from to leave them 2 for 12. The recovery was sluggish and then came off the rails when Perry picked out long-off and next ball Bolton was run out after poor communication with Shafali Verma who batted at No. 5.When Angela Reakes fell it was 5 for 50 and almost game over, but Maitlan Brown hit 31 off 20 balls to give Sixers a glimmer. However, that ended when her and Shafali fell in the space of three deliveries to Falconcer although replays showed Shafali was unlucky with the ball having come off her hip to the keeper.Sydney Thunder were excellent in the field•Getty Images

Defending champions Sydney Thunder got their first win of the season on the board with an impressive performance in the field.Thunder’s five main bowlers all played a part after they had made 5 for 133 based around a second-wicket stand 89 between Tahlia Wilson and Phoebe Litchfield. Samantha Bates was named player of the match for her 2 for 14 in a spell that included 12 dot balls and the wicket of Meg Lanning. Issy Wong, the English overseas bowler, produced a gem of a delivery to clean up Annabel Sutherland as Stars struggled in the powerplay.Elyse Villani and Maia Bouchier gave a platform but the pair fell in the space of three deliveries – Bouchier lbw to Bates and Villani missing a pull against Sammy-Jo Johnson – which derailed their chances. Deepti Sharma then claimed three wickets including a pair of return catches. After he first significant score of the tournament against Melbourne Renegades, Smriti Mandhana fell cheaply as she chipped to mid-on. Litchfield played out a maiden against Sutherland but got herself going with a pair of boundaries in the allrounder’s next over. She was one short of fifty when a lofted drive found long-on but Wilson was about to reach a maiden WBBL fifty from 49 balls.

Arsenal can forget Gyokeres & Havertz by signing "the best 9 in the world"

The last month or so has put a serious dent in Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have dropped points in three consecutive league games and now find themselves seven points and five places adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Worse yet, the Gunners look porous at the back, and utterly ineffective in attack, which has led some fans to demand the club look for a new striker in 2025, with names like Viktor Gyokeres at the top of a lot of fan’s wishlists.

However, there is another sensationally gifted centre-forward the North Londoners could target instead, an experienced international who could spell trouble for Kai Havertz’s place in the team and was actually linked with the club this summer alongside the Sporting CP ace.

Why Arsenal might want Gyokeres

So, the name on everyone’s lips at the moment is, of course, Gyokeres, who has been in scintillating form for Sporting and showed the world just how effective he can be in the Portuguese side’s spectacular win over Manchester City in the Champions League last night.

Viktor Gyokeres vs Manchester City

The Swedish superstar played like a man possessed against Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut, and thanks to two penalties and a brilliantly taken goal to level the score in the first half, came away with a European hat-trick against one of the best teams in the competition.

It was a potentially career-defining display for the former Coventry City star, but it probably shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise as, since moving to Lisbon, the 26-year-old has been a goalscoring machine.

For example, in 50 appearances last year, he scored a whopping 43 goals and provided 15 assists, meaning that the Stockholm-born phenom averaged 1.16 goal involvements every game.

This season has seen the 22-capped international somehow reach yet another level, scoring 23 goals and providing four assists in 17 appearances, equating to an average of 1.58 goal involvements per game, which is frankly absurd.

In all, Gyokeres looks like he could already be one of the best strikers in the world, but there is one issue, aside from the potential fee, that might prevent Arsenal from signing him: his lack of experience in a top-five league, which is not something that can be held against another forward the North Londoners could turn to.

The sensational striker Arsenal could sign instead

The striker Arsenal could turn to in place of Gyokeres and to challenge or replace Havertz next year is Inter Milan’s leading man, Lautaro Martinez.

Inter Milan'sLautaroMartinezcelebrates scoring their second goal

The Gunners were linked with a £94m move for the Argentine during the summer, and even though he has since signed a new deal with the Italian giants, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be available for the right price.

With that said, how does the World Cup winner, who renowned football podcaster Angelo Valdes described as “the best 9 in the world,” compare to the Gunners’ number 29? Would he be a clear upgrade worth splashing the cash on?

In short, yes, he would, as while Valdes’ claim might be slightly hyperbolic, it isn’t too far off the mark.

In 295 appearances for the Nerazzurri, the 27-year-old has scored 135 goals and provided 47 assists, which equates to a goal involvement on average every 1.62 games over six years.

Moreover, if we compare his form to Havertz’s from last season, there remains very little comparison regarding whom the better goalscorer is.

For example, in his 66 appearances for the club since his £65m move, the former Chelsea star has scored 21 goals and provided eight assists, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.27 games.

In contrast, the former Racing Club Gem has scored 33 goals and provided 11 assists in just 57 appearances, which breaks down to a goal involvement on average every 1.29 games.

Ultimately, while Havertz remains a valuable member of Arsenal’s team, his raw output falls significantly below Martinez’s, and with Gyokeres having never played in a top-five league, signing the Argentine in 2025 appears to be the best option for the Gunners.

There are a number of players unlucky not to make the cut

Andrew McGlashan22-Nov-2021

Beth Mooney had another superb campaign•Getty Images

Beth Mooney (Perth Scorchers)
The No. 1 T20I batter in the world was the leading run-scorer in the regular season with another prolific display at the top of the order. The standout was the 62-ball century against Melbourne Renegades. As a reminder that there are different ways to be successful in the format, she struck only one six.Sophie Devine (Perth Scorchers)
Devine just keeps churning out the numbers. The value of the pairing with Mooney – the most destructive T20 opening combination in domestic cricket – cannot be understated. Her medium pace adds further value as does the extraordinary record in Super Overs. She won two off her own bat this season.Georgia Redmayne (Brisbane Heat)
It is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore Redmayne’s claims for a place in the Australia side even with the argument that it’s a tough batting order to break into. She showed terrific consistency with five half-centuries, giving further evidence of her expanded stroke-range. The leg-side stumping in Heat’s final group game was another highlight and she would challenge Mooney for the gloves in this side.Harmanpreet Kaur was magnificent in the middle order•Getty Images

Grace Harris (Brisbane Heat)
With a permanent place at the top of the order (although slipping down a little in this XI) Harris added consistency to her game this campaign, with four half-centuries in 13 innings, without forgoing her natural flair. A little lean on wickets and a touch expensive, but this side has no shortage of bowlers. Katie Mack very unlucky to miss out, but with a number of other accumulators in the order, Harris’ power shades it.Harmanpreet Kaur (Melbourne Renegades)
Revived her reputation as a masterful finisher – notably against Adelaide Strikers with 73 off 46 balls – in one of the key elements of Renegades’ impressive campaign. Some of her off-side driving was stunning and she topped the regular-season sixes tally with 18. A very handy option with the ball and impressive leadership qualities.Kim Garth (Melbourne Stars)
The former Ireland allrounder, who is now based in Australia but was classed as an overseas player, was very consistent with the new ball and a regular threat. Became the first bowler to send down three maidens in a WBBL innings with her extraordinary spell of 3-3-0-3 against Sydney Thunder. Was useful with the bat as well and one of only two of Stars’ regular batters to strike over 100.Alana King could have pushed herself into Australia contention•Getty Images

Jess Jonassen (Brisbane Heat)
After missing the India series through injury, Jonassen was back doing what she does best – dominating with the ball as the leading wicket-taker. Didn’t quite fire with the bat but still bolsters the lower order.Alana King (Perth Scorchers)
There is an opening for a legspinner in the Australia side after Georgia Wareham’s injury and King must be in contention after picking up her Stars form with her new club. Produced a number of high-reel deliveries during the campaign while going at under a run-a-ball and was a banker for her captain.Lauren Cheatle (Sydney Sixers)
Could be viewed as something of a surprise inclusion, but having belatedly found a spot in the XI her left-arm swing, often finding sharp late movement, she made a significant impression although she rarely had runs to work with. If the form line continues, a spot in the Australia A team is certainly within reach again.Darcie Brown regularly claimed top-order wickets•Getty Images

Darcie Brown (Adelaide Strikers)
Her pace continues to provide a point-of-difference to whichever attack she is part of and would regularly take top-order wickets to set opposition back. Removed her Australia team-mate Ash Gardner first ball twice. Will occasionally prove expensive in the hunt for wickets but definitely a price worth paying.Tayla Vlaeminck (Hobart Hurricanes)
Often bowled better than a haul of 13 wickets would suggested and regularly pushed the speedgun into the mid-120kph area. Significantly, too, managed to play all the matches which was a promising sign for her durability after a lot of injury problems. This XI is packed with bowling options, but if the balance had been for another specialist spinner it would have gone to Lilly Mills from Scorchers.

Rupa Gurunath resigns as Tamil Nadu Cricket Association president

TNCA chief Rupa Gurunath felicitates Tamil Nadu players Abhinav Mukund and Dinesh Karthik•K Sivaraman

Rupa Gurunath has resigned from her post as Tamil Nadu Cricket Association president. The daughter of former BCCI chief N Srinivasan became the first woman to lead an Indian state cricket association in 2019 but has now given up the post “to focus on business and personal commitments.”Tamil Nadu enjoyed considerable success in Rupa’s tenure, winning back-to-back Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophies in 2021 and 2021. They were on course to do the white-ball title double earlier this month but having got all the way to the Vijay Hazare 50-overs final, they lost to Himachal Pradesh. In Rupa’s time at the head, the TNCA also hosted back-to-back Test matches against England in 2021, the first phase of IPL and the Tamil Nadu Premier League as well.’It has been my pleasure and a true honor to have served as President of one of the most prestigious Cricket Associations of the country,” she said “I take this opportunity to thank all the Apex Council Members, Players, Staff, Members of TNCA from City and Districts, friends and family for their support during my tenure.”Rupa is a whole-time director at India Cements, the company owned by Srinivasan which also owns the Chennai Super Kings team in the IPL. As a result of that role, she came under the BCCI ethics officer’s scrutiny in 2021 and was found guilty of a conflict of interest. Rupa is married to Gurunath Meiyappan, the former Super Kings official who was banned for life from any involvement in cricket for his role in the IPL betting scandal in 2013 by the Justice RM Lodha Committee.
