Tuchel & Conte fight, Ange chaos: The 10 greatest Spurs v Chelsea matches

Whether it’s the Battle of the Bridge, Tottenham Hotspur’s last piece of silverware or even Ange Postecoglou’s tactical stubbornness last season, Spurs v Chelsea rarely disappoints. And as the two London rivals prepare to square off yet again in the Premier League, we’ve taken a look back at the best games between the two sides.

Todd Boehly's worst transfers at Chelsea… so far

There are plenty to choose from, but who has been Boehly’s biggest mistake at Stamford Bridge?

2 ByStephan Georgiou Aug 23, 2024 10 Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham (2022) Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte's firm handshake

Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte.

It feels somewhat strange that it’s been just two years since Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte created a famous Premier League moment as Chelsea and Tottenham battled out a dramatic 2-2 draw.

It was the Blues who struck first through Kalidou Koulibaly before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s effort levelled things up just after the hour mark.

The drama really began to heat up when Conte and Tuchel were booked over a disagreement about Anthony Taylor’s failure to award Chelsea a free kick following Rodrigo Bentancur’s challenge on Kai Havertz prior to the equaliser.

Tuchel then stoked the fire by sprinting past Conte to celebrate Reece James’ strike to regain the Blues’ lead, only for Kane to head home a late leveller.

If those at Stamford Bridge thought the drama was about to end there, a firm handshake between both managers soon proved otherwise, resulting in a red card apiece.

9 Chelsea 3-3 Tottenham (2007) Blues bounce back to earn replay

Frank Lampard for Chelsea.

Taking their battle from the Premier League to the FA Cup, Chelsea were forced to come from behind to earn a dramatic replay against Spurs in 2007, albeit one that Jose Mourinho wanted to avoid.

The majority of the drama arrived in a frantic first half, with Dimitar Berbatov’s effort handing his side a swift lead in the opening five minutes, only for Frank Lampard to level things up in the 22nd.

The sides weren’t level for long thanks to Michael Essien’s own goal and Hossam Ghaly’s strike, giving the Lilywhites some breathing room.

The Blues looked down for the count up until the very last when Lampard rose to find his brace with 19 minutes remaining and Kalou equalised in the remaining four minutes of normal time to force a replay, which they went on to win 2-1.

8 Chelsea 4-2 Tottenham (2017) Matic stunner shows Spurs the door

Another FA Cup thriller to remember, it was unlikely star Nemanja Matic who stole the headlines in the semi-final clash between Chelsea and Spurs in 2017, as the Blues advanced to the final at Wembley.

Level after the hour mark thanks to Willian’s first-half brace and a goal apiece from Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Chelsea took things up a level and soon soared to victory.

Eden Hazard regained his side’s lead – as he often did – with 15 minutes of normal time remaining before a loose ball fell the way of Matic, who simply could not resist the chance to unleash what proved to be an unstoppable thunderbolt.

For all of their efforts and Jermaine Jenas’ verdict that they had been the better side, Spurs found themselves dumped out of the FA Cup by their rivals once again.

7 Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea, 2023 Jackson punishes chaotic nine-player Spurs

In between Nicolas Jackson keeping the linesman busy and earning what felt like an inevitable hat-trick, the main question that many sent the way of Spurs was whether it was brave, stupid or honourable to stick to their high-line principles when down to nine men against a Chelsea side that could not believe their luck.

The Lilywhites initially found the lead as early as the sixth minute through Dejan Kulusevski, but things never got better from there. Instead, the chaos began.

Brennan Johnson’s goal was ruled out by VAR, as was Raheem Sterling’s, before Moises Caicedo suffered the same controversial fate. But in amongst the constant line-drawing at Stockley Park, Cristian Romero was caught red-handed on the replay of Caicedo’s effort and was given his marching orders following a reckless challenge on Enzo Fernandez.

Cole Palmer’s equaliser from the penalty spot finally denied VAR the chance to intervene, as did Destiny Udogie’s second yellow card of the evening after the break.

Down to nine men and level, some would rightly assume that the wise tactic would have been to hold what you have, but that’s not the way of Postecoglou, who forced his side to suffer an eventual and inevitable Jackson hat-trick.

6 Tottenham 1-5 Chelsea (2012) Chelsea fuel goalline technology debate

Whilst the main topic of debate these days is whether to scrap VAR, it wasn’t so long ago that the Premier League was crying out for the goalline technology which has since proved to be a great success.

When Chelsea put five past London rivals Spurs in merciless fashion at Wembley, it was once again at the centre of debate when referee Martin Atkinson awarded Juan Mata’s effort despite replays appearing to show that the ball has not crossed the line.

From there, even Gareth Bale’s response to Didier Drogba and Mata’s initial strikes couldn’t stand in the way of a Chelsea victory, who sealed a five-star display through Ramires, Lampard and Florent Malouda in the second half to send the Blues to the FA Cup final yet again.

5 Chelsea 4-3 Tottenham (1994) Stein wins seven-goal thriller

Mark Stein for Chelsea.

To find one of the most high-scoring games between Chelsea and Tottenham, we have to go all the way back to 1994 when the Blues defeated their London rivals 4-3 thanks to Mark Stein’s last-minute winner from the penalty spot.

Once the floodgates were open, they never slammed shut at Stamford Bridge to create a true Premier League thriller.

Spurs initially thought they were on course to secure victory when Steve Sedgley opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Jason Dozzell instantly doubled their lead a minute later.

But that was only the start, with Chelsea fighting back through Mal Donaghy, Stein’s equaliser and John Spencer’s 40th-minute effort to turn the game on its head before half-time.

Adding one last crescendo, Andrew Gray’s penalty to level things up in the 73rd minute almost foreshadowed what was to come, given that Stein sealed a dramatic brace from 12 yards to find a last-minute winner for Chelsea.

4 Chelsea 1-2 Tottenham (2008) Spurs secure silverware

Spurs win the 2008 Carling Cup.

It may be difficult to imagine these days given how it’s become the stick to poke those in north London with, but 16 years ago, Spurs found themselves lifting the League Cup after defeating Chelsea at Wembley to end a nine-year chase for silverware.

Little did they know, of course, that their victory over the Blues would be their last trophy win to this day.

What that does mean, however, is that as things stand, Jonathan Woodgate holds quite the place in the Spurs history books after scoring an extra-time winner to defeat the Blues all those years ago.

3 Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea (2015) Kane shocks leaders Chelsea

Harry Kane for Spurs.

Despite eventually being crowned Premier League champions in the 2014/15 campaign, Chelsea couldn’t find a way past Mauricio Pochettino’s side at White Hart Lane, as Harry Kane inspired the Lilywhites to a thumping 5-3 victory, scoring twice.

The Blues initially set course for another win over their rivals after Diego Costa found the opener, only for Kane to level things up after half an hour.

By the time the break rolled around, the Lilywhites had flipped the game on its head to lead 3-1 courtesy of Danny Rose and Andros Townsend from the spot. As if things then couldn’t get any worse, Kane found his second and Spurs’ fourth right after half-time.

Eventual champions Chelsea had been given their wake-up call in violent fashion even as goals from Eden Hazard and John Terry in between Nacer Chadli for Spurs’ fifth restored some pride.

2 Tottenham 4-4 Chelsea Spurs and Chelsea share points in eight-goal thriller

Joe Cole for Chelsea.

A year after they shared a stunning 3-3 draw in the FA Cup, Tottenham and Chelsea entertained us all in the Premier League with a 4-4 draw.

An eight-goal thriller which began with Drogba’s opener within three minutes and Woodgate’s leveller just nine minutes later, the eight-goal thriller remains one of the best games between the two London clubs.

Despite the early goals, the majority of the drama came in the second period. With Chelsea in the lead thanks to Michael Essien’s goal in the 20th minute, those at White Hart Lane were forced to wait until just before the hour mark for the drama to pick up again, courtesy of Joe Cole. The midfielder extended his side’s lead to commence a dramatic Spurs comeback.

Coming through Berbatov and Tom Huddlestone, Spurs stunningly had the scores level with 15 minutes to go.

However, in a manner which can only be described as vintage Spurs, Cole found his brace just minutes later to hand Chelsea a 4-3 lead before Robbie Keane finished the drama with two minutes of normal time remaining to end the game at four apiece.

1 Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham (2016) Battle of the Bridge ends Spurs title dream

It may not be the most high-scoring game on this list, but it is arguably the best, so much so that it even has its own name.

The Battle of the Bridge took place on the field of Stamford Bridge and featured as many as 12 yellow cards between the two sides – and a crowning moment for Leicester City. It remains one of the most entertaining spectacles in one of the most historic seasons of English football.

In truth, the Blues had no right to even secure a point against a high-flying Spurs side that year, especially whilst they sat in mid-table and were quickly 2-0 down against the Lilywhites. Kane and Son Heung-min’s efforts left their side on course for three points, only for Eden Hazard’s best form to reveal itself for the first time that season.

Following Gary Cahill’s goal to halve the deficit, Hazard took hold of proceedings and curled a sensational effort beyond Hugo Lloris to secure a point for Chelsea and an odds-defying Premier League title for Leicester. In a battle between Chelsea and Spurs, it was the Foxes who truly came out on top.

'Don't expect any change at the top of the order' – Wade backs Finch to open at T20 World Cup

‘I’m confident in that and when the big game comes Finch and Warner will nail it’

Matthew Wade has no doubt captain Aaron Finch and David Warner will be Australia’s opening combination for their T20 World Cup title defence later this year despite questions surrounding Finch’s form after a lean series against Sri Lanka.Australia lost the final T20I at the MCG but claimed the series 4-1 overall. However, Finch made just 78 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 91.76. In his last 17 T20I innings he has reached fifty just once and has nine single-figure scores with a strike rate of just 111.Related

But Wade recalled the questions surrounding Warner heading into the last T20 World Cup and in the UAE, which he answered emphatically, and believes Finch will do the same.”It feels like these questions have come before potentially before the last World Cup and after the first couple of games about David,” Wade said. “Everyone had their say about Davey and he got player of the tournament in the World Cup. Finchy is a class player and I’ve heard people questioning where he’s at. He averages 40 and strikes at 140 for a reason.”He’s the captain of our team and the questions are always going to come when you get a little bit older and you don’t do well in one series.”They’re class players for a reason and the best we’ve had in T20 cricket ever, and I don’t expect any change at the top of the order to be honest. So those two will be there in the World Cup. I’m confident in that and when the big game comes they will nail it.”Wade made a brilliant 43 not out off 27 balls to lift Australia to a competitive total after they slumped to 5 for 82. It was just his third innings of the series and just his sixth in his last 12 T20I internationals. But his ability to deliver as Australia’s new finisher in that timeframe has been remarkable, having produced match-shaping hands in four of those six innings.Australia are intent on developing more chemistry between Wade and Marcus Stoinis in the lower-middle order and showed that intent by elevating Ashton Agar to open for two games in the series so that the pair could get more repetitions in the death batting roles.”It was nice to get a hit,” Wade said. “I know the role I’m playing now within this team. I know that opportunities aren’t going to come thick and fast. It was the same in the World Cup. It’s going to be the same in the next few series as well.”The position that I’m going to play dictates that I’ll just go there and take the opportunity that I can.”I feel really confident in what we’re doing down there. I feel backed by the coaching staff and the selectors that there’s going to be a real opportunity down there for myself and Marcus to kind of form that partnership that we’re looking for when the big games come around. Opportunities might not swing my way over the next little bit. But when I get an opportunity I feel confident that the whole team behind me.”Wade was also excited to potentially play a variety of roles in the IPL after he was bought by Gujarat Titans at last week’s auction.”I haven’t spoken to them exactly about what my role will be, but I would assume anywhere from opening down to seven I’m pretty comfortable with,” Wade said. “It doesn’t worry me too much. If middle order comes my way, then it’s another opportunity to get some game time in and play that role.”I know what I can do at the top of the order. I’ve done it for a long period of time now as well. I’m just really, really happy that I got the opportunity. It’s been a long time since I have.”I feel blessed in that I’ve been given the chance to go over there and play IPL again.”

Clement may have unearthed his own John McGinn with £4.5m Rangers star

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement may have bought himself some time after the excellent victory over Nice in the Europa League in midweek.

He is still under pressure, but if he can somehow turn around the club’s fortunes between now and January, he could be given the window to bring in new players.

His record in the market hasn’t been great, although there have been a few standouts.

Clement’s best Rangers signings

Vaclav Cerny can lay claim to being one of the Belgian’s best signings this season, scoring eight times and chipping in with five assists across 20 games for the Gers.

He may only be on loan, but could the board convince him to join permanently?

Nedim Bajrami is another attacking player who joined in the summer. Costing around £3.4m, the Albanian has made an impressive start to life in Glasgow, adding some class to an attack that was stagnating.

In Europe, the former Sassuolo midfielder has created six big chances, averaged 2.4 key passes and succeeded with 2.6 dribbles per game, indicating how vital he has been in the final third.

Both have been crucial at times this season. In terms of future potential, however, Mohamed Diomande has the ability to star at the very highest level. The onus is now for the Ivorian to produce the goods on a more consistent basis for the Gers.

Mohamed Diomande's stats vs Nice

The midfielder delivered one of his most impressive displays of the season against Nice, just when it mattered most. Not only did he get on the scoresheet, but Diomande also won 50% of his total duels, attempted two dribbles and made two tackles as he shone at the heart of the midfield for the Light Blues.

It was a performance which hasn’t been on show over the previous few months, despite his seemingly limitless potential. Hailed as “aggressive” by analyst John Walker upon his arrival, more displays like this in the future could attract some attention.

Mohamed Diomande

He certainly has the required attributes to compete in the Premier League and is even similar to Aston Villa and Scotland star John McGinn, according to FBref, among those in his position across Europe.

The Scot – who, like Diomande, is an attack-minded, left-footed midfielder – has been one of Unai Emery’s key players since the Spaniard took charge in October 2022 and Clement could unearth his very own version of the former Hibernian starlet in Diomande.

John McGinn

The £4.5 signing from FC Nordsjaelland has demonstrated his qualities in spells since moving to Rangers at the start of the year, with the hope that he can reach similar levels to that of McGinn.

The experienced asset left Hibs for just £2m back in 2018, yet is now deemed to be worth £26m, according to Transfermarkt, and is the fifth-highest scorer in his nation’s history.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

As for Diomande, following the stunning display against Nice, this could be the start of something special, performing at a level which could see the club’s fortunes change in the next couple of months.

Clement has his own McGinn at his fingertips, no doubt about that.

WA to host Shield final after thumping Victoria by an innings

Lance Morris took four wickets and Joel Paris three as WA routed Victoria inside three days. The teams will meet again next week in the first final at the WACA in 24 years.

Western Australia secured hosting rights for the Sheffield Shield final for the first time in 24 years after hammering Victoria inside three days at the WACA.The hosts quickly completed an innings and 51-run triumph on Friday, courtesy of four wickets from Lance Morris and three from Joel Paris, and in the process finished in top spot on the Shield table ahead of the decider starting next Thursday. The final will be a rematch of this week’s contest, with Victoria finishing in second spot despite the loss after New South Wales failed to accrue enough bonus points to surpass Victoria even if they beat South Australia.Victoria will need to lift in all areas of the game to challenge WA after being rolled for 114 and 172, while the hosts looked far more assured at the crease posting 337.Victoria resumed day three at 5 for 82 – still needing 141 runs to even make WA bat again – although they found stability from Matt Short (35), while Sam Harper made a particularly patient 17 off 109 balls before he nicked Morris through to the keeper. They made it to lunch but their resistance would end quickly after, with Morris and Paris doing the damage.WA’s Hilton Cartwright earned player of the match honours for his 109 that steered his side to the strong total. He was well helped by opener Sam Whiteman’s 63, while nightwatchman Matthew Kelly looked the goods up the order blasting 41 off 51 balls.Victoria will also hope they can find more from luckless Test batter Will Pucovski, who made 22 and 11 on his return from his latest concussion.WA and Victoria last met in a Shield final in 2014-15 at a neutral venue in Hobart, which was the last final WA played in. WA haven’t hosted a final since 1997-98 or won a Sheffield Shield since 1998-99.

Man City willing to submit first offer to sign £15m Premier League gem

Looking ahead to the future rather than the frustrating reality that they currently find themselves in, Manchester City are now reportedly willing to submit an opening offer to sign a Premier League gem in 2025.

Man City transfer news

Of course, injuries have far from helped their case, but there is no escaping the fact that this is an ageing Man City squad. A number of players are creeping past their best form simultaneously, whilst club captain Kyle Walker looks a shadow of the Premier League champion he was just last season.

When the summer transfer window arrives, those at the Etihad must welcome several reinforcements for Pep Guardiola.

Just who those reinforcements are exactly remains to be seen, but recent reports have at least dropped a few hints. Names such as Viktor Gyokeres and even Trent Alexander-Arnold have been mentioned in what would be a move to send shockwaves through the Premier League. But before the Citizens splash out, they could welcome a star for the future.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are now willing to make an opening offer to sign youngster Jeremy Monga from Leicester City. Just 15 years old, the teenager is reportedly worth as much as £15m in what is an incredibly hefty fee at such an age.

With Chelsea also interested in his signature, though, Leicester could fuel quite the battle.

Man City entertaining idea of signing "promising" ace as soon as January

The Premier League champions desperately need a defensive rebuild.

If you look around European football, it is littered with Manchester City academy graduates, from Jadon Sancho and Cole Palmer to high-flying Jamie Gittens. So even if the path from their academy isn’t always into Guardiola’s side, there is a trend of success stories after developing at the Etihad – a narrative that Monga could become the latest to write.

Monga should heed McAtee warning

At 15, Monga should be in no rush to make his decision. The pathway is there to take hold of at Leicester, where he has a greater chance of eventually receiving first-team minutes.

Meanwhile, even in Manchester City’s current state, it would be incredibly difficult for any young player to work their way into Guardiola’s side – just ask James McAtee.

The midfielder impressed on loan at Sheffield United last season but has since struggled to break into Guardiola’s plans on a consistent basis.

Given their current crisis – especially in midfield – it seemed as though McAtee would finally get a chance. However, that has not proved to be the case, and the 22-year-old now looks destined to depart.

It’s a warning that Monga should consider. Whilst Phil Foden represents a true success story from the academy, it’s difficult to pick any other young players who have been handed such a chance before being discarded around European football.

Palmer, Gittens and Sancho all enjoyed their success away from Manchester City and Monga may well be best off skipping a move to the Etihad altogether.

TAUNSA

É a vontade do Corinthians.

A gente fez consulta, tentou.
