Prolific Vince scores 65 as Fuller chimes in with bat and ball to trump Sussex cameos

Hampshire warmed up for the Vitality Blast quarter-finals with their ninth victory in ten matches when they beat the Sussex Sharks by five wickets at Hove. For Sussex, it was their eighth defeat in their last nine games. The only surprise was that Sussex took the game to the final over. Hampshire looked on course for a more comfortable victory when their prolific captain James Vince and Ben McDermott put on 86 for the first wicket, striking at ten runs an over. But Hampshire’s batting faltered after Vince skied Delray Rawlins to the keeper for a 42-ball 65. After the powerplay some tight bowling from Rashid Khan and Ravi Bopara and a flurry of middle-order wickets left them needing 43 off the final five overs and then 39 off the last three. When that boiled down to 19 off two Sussex were still in the game. But when George Garton was called up to bowl the penultimate over Ross Whiteley and James Fuller thumped it for 15. That meant that leg-spinner Will Beer was on a hiding to nothing when he was called up to bowl the last over, in his last game for the club, with just four runs needed. Fuller cracked the first delivery over midwicket for four. The match was something of a dead rubber as Hampshire had already qualified for the quarter-finals, while Sussex were out of the competition. For that reason Tom Alsop, originally signed on loan from Hampshire – but recently signed on a permanent basis – was given special permission to play, though ultimately illness meant he was not available. The Sussex innings was full of cameos. They lost powerplay wickets and after five overs had scored only 28 runs for 2. In the second over the recently prolific Ali Orr skied Brad Wheal to Vince at mid-on. Then Josh Philippe lost his middle stump playing on to Chris Wood, who swung the ball in unpromising conditions.Sussex red-ball captain Tom Haines, playing his first T20 game of the season, and Harrison Ward, took 21 off the sixth over, but then Ward lofted Tom Prest to long on and Haines was stumped charging a googly from Mason Crane. Rawlins swatted two sixes in a 22-ball 29 and Bopara made 35 off 25.The most entertaining batting came at the end. Garton top-scored with 37 off just 17 deliveries, with three fours and three sixes, one a vast one over long-on. And Rashid scored a typically unorthodox 25 off a dozen balls. Somehow, Sussex had scrambled together a competitive score.
If you could write a one week script detailing the trials and tribulations of Tottenham Hotspur it would go very much like this week.
A few days ago, Spurs were defeating Arne Slot’s rampant Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. So, the confidence should have been there after a rather sticky patch in the Premier League.
No better game than an FA Cup tie against non-league Tamworth then, surely? Think again.
Remarkably, the National League side held Ange Postecoglou’s men, taking them all the way to extra time. To put it bluntly, the top-flight side were not good enough.
Tamworth went toe to toe with the Lilywhites and more than deserved the 0-0 scoreline at the end of the 90 minutes, even if things did go on to finish 3-0 after extra time.
After an embarrassing time of it on Sunday, it only highlights the need for new recruits in the January transfer window.
Tottenham's January transfer window plans
One of the names on the lips of supporters at the moment is PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani. There have been a number of reports suggesting that Spurs could sign the Frenchman on loan this summer and there has been a fresh update from the Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler.
He reported this weekend that ‘Spurs and Juventus lead the way’ for the 26-year-old this winter. That’s because Manchester United’s interest in the attacker has allegedly cooled.
Speaking of United, it’s a Red Devil who Postecogou’s side are also interested in with Wheeler revealing that there is interest in Marcus Rashford.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
It’s stated that Dortmund, Milan, Juve and Barcelona have the England international on their radar.
How Marcus Rashford compares to Randal Kolo Muani
It’s thought that initially, both players would be available on loan deals. So, it becomes clear immediately who Spurs should look at pursuing more strongly this month.
While Kolo Muani has scored as many as 23 goals in the 2022/23 season for Eintracht Frankfurt, he’s not exactly set the world alight at PSG, playing just ten times and scoring twice in Ligue 1 this term.
Crucially, he’s not got experience of the Premier League yet which if you’re bringing in someone for just a six-month loan spell, wouldn’t be advantageous.
Rashford, on the other hand, would not need a huge period of adaptation, thus meaning he’s likely the more sensible option if a deal can be done.
While the United forward has only found the net on seven occasions this term, that would make him Tottenham’s joint-third top-scorer alongside club captain, Heung-min Son.
A look at the stats over the last two campaigns also tells us why Rashford – who was “unstoppable” in the words of Erik ten Hag on the way to 39 goal involvements in all competitions throughout 2022/23 – would be a better acquisition.

While Kolo Muani certainly looks like the more creative outlet here, Rashford has a regular habit of scoring goals in English football and certainly over the last 18 months or so, he’s been a more progressive carrier of the ball and a more efficient carrier at that too.
Of course, you can look at the England international’s work rate as a cause for concern but if Postecoglou wants something short-term then the out-of-favour United man is probably the player to go for here.
Maddison upgrade: Spurs could land "world-class" January signing for £50m
The incredible international would be an excellent signing for Spurs.

Allrounder rescues hosts from 63 for 5 before Leach 3-21 quiets Glamorgan reply

Ed Barnard celebrates a century•Andrew Miller
Ed Barnard continued his impressive form with the bat to lead a Worcestershire fightback on the opening day of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Glamorgan at New Road. The all-rounder struck his third hundred of the campaign as the home side recovered from 63 for 5 on a seamer friendly pitch also showing early signs of some turn. Then fit again Worcestershire pace bowler Joe Leach made a treble breakthrough the close in a deadly spell with the new ball.Warwickshire are reported to have made an approach to their local rivals about the possibility of signing Barnard who is out of contract at the end of the summer. The 26-year-old again showed his quality and was given excellent support by Gareth Roderick in a sixth-wicket stand of 120.Barnard was promoted to No. 6 mid-way through last season through sheer weight of runs and has more than backed up that move this summer. A reverse sweep off spinner Andrew Salter took him to three figures off 151 balls with his 11th boundary.Michael Neser and James Harris picked up three wickets apiece for Glamorgan who then lost David Lloyd, nightwatchman James Harris and Colin Ingram to Leach, who had been out since mid May with a back problem.Only one point separated third-placed Glamorgan and Worcestershire entering the second half of the Championship campaign.Worcestershire were put into bat on a greenish surface and the Glamorgan new-ball attack of Neser and Michael Hogan quickly exploited the conditions.Ed Pollock’s poor run of form continued when he pushed forward to the first delivery of the game from Neser and lost his middle stump. His opening partner, Jake Libby, has also been short of runs but he was caught behind after a similar shot against Hogan.Taylor Cornall, playing only his second first-class match, and Azhar Ali, attempted to rebuild the innings. But after adding 40, a further three wickets fell for 15 runs.Azhar was dropped at second slip off Lloyd but then attempted to glance the same bowler and was caught down the leg side. Worcestershire Club Captain, Brett D’Oliveira has three-first class hundreds under his belt already this summer but he played around a straight ball from Harris.Cornall needed treatment after being hit on the helmet by a delivery from Neser but he looked an accomplished performer during his time in the middle. But on 25 he tried to work Lloyd away on the on side and became the second batter to be caught by Tom Cullen down the legside.Barnard twice cover drove Lloyd for boundaries as he and Roderick saw Worcestershire through to lunch at 84 for 5. The sixth-wicket pair mixed determined defence with some attractive stroke-play on the resumption.Barnard’s excellent summer with the bat continued as he completed a 92-ball fifty with seven boundaries. Roderick followed up his defiant last-day knock in the drawn game with Durham at Seat Unique Riverside with another important contribution. There was just time for the duo to complete a hundred stand before a rain interruption brought about an early tea. When play resumed, Roderick moved to within four runs of his first half-century for Worcestershire before he was bowled by Harris.Leach then steered Hogan straight into the hands of backward point and Josh Baker gloved a lifter from Harris to Cullen. But Barnard continued to attack and a ramp shot brought him a maximum at Harris’s expense. He was eventually bowled attempting the same shot against Neser who then had Charlie Morris caught behind to give Cullen his fifth catch.Leach struck with his third delivery when Lloyd was pouched at first slip. In his second over Harris edged Leach to third slip and Ingram was lbw after working to leg.

Cheteshwar Pujara was in sublime form again for Sussex•Getty Images
Even the most one-sided match involves two teams. Look at the scorecard for this game and surely the narrative is plain. A world-class batsman and one of Sussex’s brightest young cricketers amass a total that overwhelms opponents, some of whom are barely known outside the Surrey Championship. All this is true. Cheteshwar Pujara’s 174 ravaged Surrey’s attack in a fashion unknown to those who have only seen him solder an Indian innings together in a Test match. And Ari Karvelas’s four wickets with a new white ball made certain the result of this match was known long before Ali Orr’s running catch on the Palmeira Avenue side of the ground satisfied the fact-checkers. More than 18 overs were left in the game when that last wicket fell and the informal games now taking place on the Hove outfield have an air of celebration about them, as though suggesting that if Surrey’s cricketers couldn’t provide more entertainment, the home spectators will make their own.But let us look more closely. No county’s staff has been ransacked for players quite as brutally as Surrey’s. At the current count – things may have altered in the last half-hour – 14 players had been called up for The Hundred. But one can argue that the county’s supporters have been blessed by such pillaging. A second Championship in four years is simmering gently and instead of watching players they know well, they have had the chance to see cricketers hardly any of us outside the county knew at all before this competition began. Six of Ben Geddes’ team have made their List A debuts in the past fortnight, nine of this team were under 24, and they are being coached by Alec Stewart, the “gaffer” having found the Oval Invincibles’ call utterly resistible. Many people felt similarly at Hove this Sunday morning when the white roofs in Cow Corner were whipped to a point like meringues and there was a silver shimmer on the Channel’s waves as though the sea was suddenly molten. And at the Cromwell Road End there were – wouldn’t you know it? – those blue and white deckchairs, rows of the rascals and most of them occupied by supporters who have kept the faith through fat and lean summers at Hove. One or two may have been here on the July morning in 1966 when a young lad called Greig made his debut against Cambridge University; some were certainly around when that first title arrived in 2003. Loyalties pledged early are often pledged deep.Such fidelity was rewarded abundantly on a day when Surrey’s young players discovered that their education will frequently be merciless. And the truth, though no one can acknowledge it, is that some of them will not establish themselves as professional cricketers. So Stewart will have been watching carefully in the first half of today’s cricket as his bowlers and fielders were savaged by Tom Clark and Pujara in their 205-run third-wicket stand, the highest for Sussex against Surrey in List A cricket. Who stood up? Who wilted? Who kept their discipline in the field as Pujara turned up the heat in the last third of the innings, going from 100 to 150 in 20 balls before he skied Connor McKerr and was eventually caught by Geddes at mid-off for his List A best score of 174 off 131 balls. When he was out, the Surrey cricketers he had terrorised queued up to shake his hand. The respect was obvious but maybe they thought something might rub off.Related

Yet the morning had begun so well for Surrey. Orr was caught at the wicket by Josh Blake off Tom Lawes in the third over of the day and Harrison Ward followed four balls later, bowled off the inside edge for five by Matt Dunn. Thereafter, though, the morning and early afternoon belonged to Sussex, first to Clark, who timed the ball beautifully from the moment he drove Dunn through backward point in the sixth over of the morning and reached his maiden List A century off 104 balls with a single off Amar Virdi.None of this will have pleased the Surrey supporters who boarded the 8.14 from Victoria but they were fully aware that their green team might have a hard day. But they supported them anyway and one rejoiced in their faithfulness. In truth, no member of Geddes’ attack will look back on Sussex’s innings with much delight for there were times when Pujara had no truck with any bowler. There were three successive fours off McKerr, four on the trot off Yousef Majid and five sixes, a couple of which sailed into the prosecco parties in Cow Corner. But if this Royal London Cup campaign is giving Surrey’s young players some sense of the granite reality of their brutal trade, it is also offering 28-year-old Aristides Karvelas further opportunities to show what he might achieve for Sussex if his month’s trial is converted into a full contract. Karvelas bowls at a brisk fast-medium and if the first few strides of his run-up suggest the lumber of Angus Fraser, the end product is altogether more athletic. Low bounce may have helped him to take his first wicket when he bowled Geddes but his other successes were mostly his own work, although Nico Reifer cannot look back with much pleasure on the limp, hanging bat that edged a catch to Tom Alsop.Karvelas’s first seven overs settled Surrey’s hash. Ryan Patel, one of the few Surrey’s players with proper first-team experience, played well for his 65 and the innings lasted long enough to allow Lawes to pick up his maiden Surrey fifty. The game was long gone by then, though, and Delray Rawlins’ three cheap wickets merely allowed Surrey’s supporters to enjoy a pint of Harvey’s in Hope Place or catch an early train back to the city. And at least they, like their Sussex counterparts, had been watching cricketers who represented a geographical area in which most of them had learned their cricket and to which they owed allegiance. It is worth treasuring such things in a month when the plastic creations of marketing men are blindly worshipped and there are vandals at the gates of the city.

14 Nico Gonzalez Porto to Man City (£50m)
Nico Gonzalez
Midfielder Nico Gonzalez was Manchester City’s fourth signing of the 2025 winter window, having also signed Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis for a combined £180m.
Gonzalez was perhaps more of a necessity for the Citizens given that Rodri had been ruled out for the season with an ACL injury. He made the move from Portuguese giants Porto for £50m to finally bring an end to City’s extravagant spending (at least, until the summer).
13 Michael Olise Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich (£50m)
Crystal Palace's Michael Olise
Michael Olise was always a great player to watch during his Crystal Palace days, but with all due respect to the Eagles, it was clear that his talent merited playing for a top European club.
Bayern Munich came calling last summer, splashing out £50m on the Frenchman, and he has produced some brilliant moments in his maiden season at the Allianz Arena. He has six goals and assists apiece in the Bundesliga, as well as four goals in the Champions League, one of which was a superb solo effort against Shakhtar Donetsk.
12 Amadou Onana Everton to Aston Villa (£50m)
Amadou Onana
It was no great surprise to see Amadou Onana depart Everton for Aston Villa in last year’s summer transfer window, no doubt feeling that he needed to join a club playing in the Champions League rather than one battling to stay in the Premier League.
The Belgian has enjoyed a solid first season at Villa Park, starting 14 matches in the Premier League and chipping in with two goals in the competition. That said, Villa fans may want a little more from him as he attempts to justify the £50m fee the Villans paid for him.
11 Moussa Diaby Aston Villa to Al-Ittihad (£50m)
Having looked like a superb signing for Villa just over a year ago, Moussa Diaby’s time there petered out a little as the months passed, and he ended up joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad last summer.
They paid a reported £50m for his services, but only one goal has been scored in 10 league appearances this season, perhaps suggesting that Villa did well to get a healthy sum of money for the winger.
10 Manuel Ugarte PSG to Man Utd (£50.5m)
Manchester United sealed a mega-money deadline-day move for PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte just a year after the Uruguayan joined the French giants from Sporting CP.
The Red Devils paid an initial £42.1m to bring the Ligue 1 champion to Old Trafford, with add-ons worth around £8.4m allowing PSG to break even following their outlay on Ugarte 12 months prior.
With Erik ten Hag departing the club just months later, it has not been the greatest of first campaigns for Ugarte, though all parties will be hoping he can show his best, particularly with his former club agreeing a sell-on fee in their negotiations.
9 Dani Olmo RB Leipzig to Barcelona (£51m)
Barcelona'sDaniOlmoin action with Borussia Dortmund's Giovanni Reyna and Nico Schlotterbeck
Dani Olmo was one of the star players at Euro 2024, standing out with his attacking brilliance and helping inspire Spain to glory, alerting some of Europe’s top clubs in the process.
It was Barcelona who eventually acquired the signature of the 26-year-old, signing him for £51m from RB Leipzig, but it was a complex transfer not without its issues, as he was only registered for the first half of the season.
That problem has now been overcome, with Olmo granted permission to continue representing the Catalan giants amid rumours over his short-term future.
8 Pedro Neto Wolves to Chelsea (£54m)
Pedro Neto
Pedro Neto was always a great player to watch for Wolves, but injuries seemed to hold him back. Still, that didn’t stop Chelsea from taking a punt on him last summer.
So far, the Portuguese’s availability has been good, with 19 league appearances handed to him in his first half-season, but his only goal in the competition was a great long-range strike at home to Arsenal. More is needed to justify the £54m that the Blues spent on him.
7 Leny Yoro Lille to Man Utd (£58.9m)
Leny Yoro for Man Utd.
Leny Yoro was arguably Manchester United’s most exciting signing of the summer considering he arrived with a reputation as one of the world’s leading young centre-backs.
However, it’s fair to say that it has been a sobering first season at Old Trafford for the Frenchman, with only four starts and nine appearances coming his way in the league my mid-January. That said, the defender is still only 19 and is playing in a mediocre team, so it would be unfair to judge him too much at this point.
United paid just over £52m upfront for the former Lille starlet, with add-ons taking the potential total transfer fee to £58.9m.
6 Khvicha Kvaratskhelia Napoli to PSG (£59m)
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has been one of Europe’s most devastating wingers in recent years, and once the January window arrived, it became clear that a move away from Napoli was on the cards.
The 23-year-old was linked with various top clubs, including Liverpool, but he ended up joining PSG in January 2025 for £59m plus add-ons. While the specific financial details were not disclosed by either club, it is likely that these add-ons would take the overall transfer fee well past the £60m mark, if not more.
Having lit up Serie A as Napoli marched to Scudetto glory and with Georgia as they made their historic major tournament debut, Kvaratskhelia could become one of PSG’s key men post-Mbappe.
5 Joao Neves Benfica to PSG (£60m)
Joao Neves has been considered one of Europe’s leading young midfielders for a number of years, and it was always clear that Benfica were going to find it extremely hard to keep hold of him.
Paris Saint-Germain snapped up the Portuguese for an initial £50m prior to the start of the new season, with the price potentially rising to £60m including add-ons.
Neves hasn’t disappointed in France, proving to be a key figure in the middle of the park. The 20-year-old has registered seven assists in just 13 starts in Ligue 1, and it feels as though there are still plenty of further levels to find in his career.
The injury is likely to keep the allrounder out of action for three weeks
