Injured Matt Henry out of ODIs in Pakistan, India; Boult 'out of the picture' for England Tests

Kyle Jamieson is set to return to action for Auckland in the Super Smash

New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry has been sidelined from the upcoming ODIs in Pakistan and India with an abdominal strain. He will return home with the other members of the Test squad who are not in the white-ball mix. New Zealand are yet to name a replacement for Henry.Henry’s absence could potentially open up a spot for uncapped bowling allrounder Henry Shipley who has been in excellent form in domestic cricket over the past two years for Canterbury.”It has been tough playing ten days essentially out of the last 12 [in Karachi] and that being full days with no weather breaks,” head coach Gary Stead said. “So when you’ve been in the field for eight sessions in each Test match, I guess there is natural wear and tear on players.”Henry joins Kyle Jamieson and Adam Milne on the sidelines. Earlier this week, Milne had been withdrawn from the squad for the ODI series in both Pakistan and India. Stead revealed that Milne is nursing a side issue and isn’t ready for international cricket.”He has a little bit of a side issue and for Adam it’s about finding confidence in himself that he can let go fully and that’s what we are trying to help him with,” Stead said. “He just doesn’t feel that he’s ready for international cricket at this stage and we agree with him.”Boult ‘out of the picture’ for England Tests – Stead Stead reckoned that Trent Boult would not be part of New Zealand’s squad for the two-match Test series at home against England in February. Boult had turned down his New Zealand central contract in August last year, but turned out for the national side in the T20 World Cup. He has not played for New Zealand since that tournament, but has been active in franchise T20 cricket, featuring for Melbourne Stars in the BBL. Boult will now leave the BBL to link up with MI Emirates for the inaugural ILT20 league, which will run from January 13 to February 12. The Mount Maunganui Test is scheduled to begin on February 16, four days after the end of the ILT20 in the UAE.”No, I wouldn’t have thought so,” Stead said. “I mean Trent and I have had discussions and I think his return from the UAE would only be a day or two immediately prior to that [start of England Tests]. I think from a workload perspective that’s out of the picture.”Kyle Jamieson has not played competitive cricket since June 2022•Getty Images

Jamieson set to return to action in Super SmashJamieson, who has not played competitive cricket since the Trent Bridge Test in June last year because of a back injury, is set to return to action in the 20-over Super Smash. According to Stead, Jamieson is likely to play for Auckland “within about a week or so”. His availability for the Test series against England is still unclear, and Stead insisted that the team management is against rushing him back into top-flight cricket.”We’ll make a decision a little bit closer to the time around the England test series whether that is maybe a step too far, or whether it is the right time for him to play again,” Stead said. “So, he’s been out of cricket for a long time now and I think it would be silly to push too quickly and set him back again with the long-term plan of what’s ahead of us.”Despite being on the sidelines, Jamieson earned an IPL contract worth INR 1 crore with Chennai Super Kings last month, with head coach Stephen Fleming hopeful of Jamieson being fit for the league. Jamieson had earlier pulled out of the IPL 2022 auction to spend more time at home amid the Covid-19 pandemic and work on his all-format game.Test wicketkeeper Tom Blundell has also joined the injury list, having suffered a left adductor strain. In his absence, it was Tom Latham who kept wicket on the final day of the second Test against Pakistan, which ended in a thrilling draw. Blundell is expected to be available for the start of New Zealand’s home Test series against England, but will be out of action for Wellington in the ongoing Super Smash for two to four weeks.”We expect it [Blundell’s injury] to be anything between two to four weeks, in terms of a full return to play, but we’re hopeful the way he has progressed in the last day or so [that] it will be on the shorter side of that period of time,” Stead said.

Josh Bohannon, George Balderson extend Lancashire lead on dreary day

Sight of Olly Stone limping off midway through an over with a hamstring injury piles on gloom for Notts

David Hopps06-May-2023

You would need to be a confirmed anti-monarchist to turn up at Trent Bridge on a wretched day like this: the coronation of King Charles III pointedly shunned in favour of a bedraggled County Championship match that appeared likely to be rained off by lunchtime only to totter back into life when least expected.Threats to the realm these spectators, dotted around largely deserted stands in rebellious little groups, with every chance there were crumpled paperbacks of Milton’s in their knapsacks, concealed below a slice of republican quiche. Fortunate, some would say, not to be bundled off into white vans.Trent Bridge officially did everything by the book, of course. They sang the national anthem when Queen Elizabeth II died and, as history took its course, they sang God Save the King to mark the succession, both teams with chests thrust out with pride. County clubs have vied loyally in the past week to promote their link with royalty, however tenuous. Nottinghamshire’s prize possession is a photo of Prince Philip bowling in the nets in 1949, one royal who really did have an affinity with the game. That goodwill fleetingly appeared to be reciprocated when Charles formally promised to be a “brave advocate of those in need” shortly before the exchange of swords. Well, somebody has to try to save the Championship, and a newly-crowned king, with an insatiable appetite for tradition, is in as good a position as anyone. What cricket there was saw Lancashire extend their overnight lead of 63 to 184 with the second-wicket pair, George Balderson and Josh Bohannon, both closing in on hundreds during an ominously warmish morning of thickening cloud only to perish five hours later. When the umpires did lead the teams off at lunchtime, like a couple of malcontents anticipating the rain before it had actually happened, Lancashire’s head coach, Glen Chapple, leant over the balcony, arms quizzically outstretched. The implication was that every ball, every minute, was vital.Be careful what you wish for, however. At five past five, the players trooped out under glowering skies for another 21 balls, which was long enough for Balderson to be caught at first slip for 91, driving at Olly Stone. They then all trooped in, only to troop back out again almost immediately. This time Lyndon James had Bohannon caught at second slip for 92 before they about-turned once more. The least they deserved for all this marching around was a full military band, but the only accompaniment was the tuning up off a hover cover.Dane Vilas fell in a third slice of floodlit play as Lancashire, all told, lost three wickets for 24 in 10.3 overs. Nottinghamshire’s bowling, assisted by spicier conditions, had been much better than before lunch, although the sight of Stone limping off midway through an over with a hamstring injury brought more despondency for a fast bowler whose career has been haunted by injury.By then, the crowd had dwindled to next to nothing, a few dissidents perhaps who were looking for an excuse to avoid a street party or a celebratory fete. But those final overs might have been enough to keep the match alive. If Lancashire, who are still without a win, are serious about challenging for the Championship, they will need to manufacture a declaration in late morning.Bohannon is an eye-catching player, especially his penchant for an off-side drive, which has a touch of the cavalier about it. Two such assaults against Luke Fletcher took him to his half-century, but Balderson, who is opening because of an injury to the captain, Keaton Jennings, kept pace.Balderson is a compact and pragmatic left-hander capable of strong forearm thrusts, more pikeman than cavalry. Despite a first-class average of only 24, barely half that of Bohannon, he has looked difficult to dislodge and, at 22, has time on his side. At Westminster Abbey’s crowning moment, he brought up the 150 stand by flaying a wide half-volley from Stone to the cover boundary. “Nicely balanced,” somebody murmured appreciatively, which at that precise second was not what the Archbishop of Canterbury was thinking about the crown.Surprisingly there was also a full programme of cricket on Elizabeth’s Coronation Day 70 years ago. The Australians were on tour and stayed in London after the Lord’s Test for a Coronation meal at Haymarket House before travelling to Hove to face Sussex the following day. An autographed copy of the menu was auctioned recently but nobody bought it. That’s what creeping republicanism does for you.England recovered the Ashes that year, winning the final Test after the first four Tests were drawn. Four successive draws in the era of Bazball? This ropey weather would have to continue deep into July for a repeat of that.

He pocketed Isak: Newcastle now racing to sign "intelligent" ace worth £21m

Looking to keep their momentum going after winning the Carabao Cup and ending their long wait for silverware, Newcastle United are now reportedly racing to sign a Serie A winner this summer.

Newcastle eyeing key defensive addition

After 70 long years, Newcastle finally got their hands on a major trophy last weekend – defeating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley to carve their names into the history books once and for all. It was the perfect day for those in Tyneside, who saw one of their own head home the opening goal when Dan Burn rose highest before Alexander Isak wheeled away in celebration soon after.

It’s a victory that the Magpies will be desperate to build on in the Premier League as they set their sights on qualifying for the Champions League this season. It’s with that place among Europe’s elite that they could attract the fresh faces Eddie Howe has been crying out for at times, too.

Names such as Semih Kilicsoy have already threatened to steal the headlines in recent weeks, but before the young Besiktas star, it could be a defensive reinforcement that arrives.

According to MilanLive, Newcastle are now racing to sign Fikayo Tomori this summer in a deal that would be worth just €25m (£21m). After losing his place at the San Siro throughout the current campaign, the defender looks destined to depart and could find himself on his way back to the Premier League for the first time since leaving Chelsea in 2021.

PIF ready record Newcastle move to stop Isak joining Arsenal or Liverpool

Losing him would be a major blow for the Magpies.

ByHenry Jackson Mar 19, 2025

Amid competition from Nottingham Forest in the race to sign the former Chelsea man, Champions League qualification is likely to be all-important for Newcastle this summer.

Given how they’ve been forced to form makeshift backlines in the last two seasons, welcoming Tomori should be among Newcastle’s priorities when the summer transfer window swings open.

"Intelligent" Tomori would solve Newcastle problem

On paper, Fabian Schar and Sven Botman form one of the most impressive centre-back partnerships in the Premier League. They were near-perfect together when Newcastle last qualified for the Champions League in the 2022/23 campaign. However, the reality is that neither have been able to avoid injury issues to rediscover their form of two seasons ago and Newcastle must sign a solution.

That’s where Tomori should come in. The Milan man may have lost his starting place this season but it wasn’t so long ago that he was helping his side to Serie A glory and pocketing Isak in the Champions League.

AC Milan's FikayoTomoriand Slovan Bratislava's Idjessi Metoko react

Keeping the Swede quiet at the San Siro in a 0-0 draw last season, Tomori made 11 defensive actions and was not dribbled past once against the Magpies. Isak, meanwhile, failed to have a touch in Milan’s box and lost half of his duels.

Previously dubbed “intelligent” by Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, the Premier League is calling Tomori’s name once again in what could see him complete a summer return.

Spurs' award-winning CF was ahead of Kane, then Poch sold him for £208k

When it comes to the modern icons of Tottenham Hotspur, they don’t come much grander than Harry Kane.

The England captain might not have won any trophies during his time in North London, but he made an enormous impact on the club.

For example, in 435 first-team appearances, the club legend amassed a staggering tally of 280 goals and 61 assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.27 games.

It’s impossible to imagine Spurs’ modern history without Kane, yet before his breakthrough, there was another promising striker in the academy who was ahead of him, a striker who Mauricio Pochettino eventually sold for a pittance.

Kane's early Spurs career

As everyone knows, Kane’s football journey started in North London, but on the red side, with Spurs’ bitter rivals Arsenal.

However, the Gunners released the future superstar when he was just 12 years old, with then-academy manager Roy Massey later revealing that the club didn’t believe the youngster had what was needed to make it in the game.

After a few years without a professional club, the teenager joined the Lilywhites and, after spending some time in the youth system, went on several loan moves all over the country.

In between his loan moves, the Walthamstow-born ace still made 13 appearances for the U21s between the 12/13 and 13/14 seasons, scoring nine goals and providing nine assists.

Finally, after going out on numerous loan spells, playing in the academy and making the odd first-team appearance here and there, the Englishman was given his first proper chance to establish himself as the club’s starting number nine in the 14/15 season, under new boss Pochettino.

This was an opportunity he grabbed with both hands.

In 51 appearances, he scored 31 goals and provided five assists, and the rest, as they say, is history.

However, a few years before Kane finally made his mark on the team, there was another up-and-coming striker ahead of him in the pecking order, a striker who thrived in the academy and looked promising, but eventually moved on for next to nothing.

The Spurs striker who was ahead of Kane

So, if we were to travel back to the distant year of 2009, we might be talking about a certain Spurs youngster turning heads in the club’s academy by the name of Jonathan Obika.

It was at the end of the 2008/09 season that the fans awarded the teenager the club’s Breakthrough Award, as even though he was just 18 at the time, he made his debut for the club in November 2008, in a UEFA Cup game against NEC Nijmegen.

The next six years or so would see the youngster spend time on loan with various clubs, including Yeovil Town, Peterborough, Millwall, Swindon Town, Brighton & Hove Albion, Charlton Athletic and Crystal Palace.

However, there were also spells in which he returned to play for the Lilywhites U21s, and he looked excellent doing so.

For example, in just 17 appearances in the 12/13 season – when Kane was struggling on loan with Norwich and Leicester City – the Enfield-born poacher racked up a tally of 18 goals and four assists, which comes out to an average of 1.29 goal involvements per game.

Unfortunately, Pochettino did not see a future for the striker, who at one point looked destined to reach the top when he took charge in 2014, and just two years on from his barnstorming performances for the U21s, Obika was sold to Swindon for just £208k.

He might not have reached the heights that people thought he would’ve when he was making his way through Tottenham’s academy, but in the 11 years since his sale, the 34-year-old has carved out an impressive career for himself.

Following his time with Swindon, he played for Oxford United, St Mirren, Morecambe and Motherwell before retiring in July of last year, with a career that might not match up to the likes of Kane but is still something most could only dream of.

Rayudu to retire from IPL after final against Titans, promises 'no U-turn'

If he is on the winning side on Sunday night, Rayudu will join Rohit Sharma as the most successful player in IPL history, with six titles

ESPNcricinfo staff28-May-20231:24

Moody on Rayudu’s retirement: ‘A player who should be celebrated’

Ambati Rayudu has announced his retirement from the IPL. He said in a tweet on Sunday thatthe IPL 2023 final for Chennai Super Kings against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad will be his last game in the tournament and that he will not be making a “U-turn” on his decision.Last year, Rayudu had posted a tweet in which he had said IPL 2022 would be his final season in the competition. He, however, deleted it after intervention from the CSK management. That wasn’t the first time Rayudu had taken back a decision about his future in the game. In 2019, he had announced his retirement from all cricket after being snubbed for the 2019 ODI World Cup. But he then returned to domestic and IPL cricket.

Rayudu has been a big part of the CSK set-up, having been with the side since 2018 after playing for Mumbai Indians from 2010 to 2017. This year, he’s largely played as an impact substitute for CSK – coming in to bat in the middle order in place of/being substituted by a bowler – on their way to the title clash. He hasn’t had a great season, though: in 11 innings, he has scored 139 runs at a strike rate of 132.38. He scored a nine-ball 17 in tough conditions in the Qualifier 1 in Chennai to help take CSK to the final.Rayudu is among the top-ten most experienced IPL cricketers, and the second-most successful IPL cricketer, with five titles, with Mumbai Indians and CSK. Only Rohit Sharma (six) has won the IPL more times and Rayudu has the chance to equal the record if CSK win on Sunday.Under Rohit, Rayudu won the 2013, 2015 and 2017 IPL titles with Mumbai Indians and then won the 2018 and 2021 IPL titles with CSK. Rayudu had missed the first two years of the competition because of his association with the Indian Cricket League.Rayudu is currently on 203 IPL games. He has made 4329 runs with 22 half-centuries and one century, which came against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018.
