BOM INÍCIO DO LONDRINA

DUELO PASSA A FICAR LÁ E CÁ

PARANAENSES ABREM A CONTAGEM

'Boland is now my favourite player' – Cummins and Australia savour WTC win

“The way this group has played for the last two years – or probably longer – is a credit to everyone,” Mitchell Starc says

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jun-20231:54

What makes Boland so lethal?

Pat Cummins, Australia captain: “We made the most of [losing the toss]. We were certainly going to have a bowl. But yeah, the way Travis [Head] and Smithy [Steven Smith] put on the partnership, we saw a little bit of comfort after a pretty nervy morning. He [Head] has been brilliant throughout this whole campaign. It started with the Ashes a couple of years ago. He just puts the pressure right back on the bowlers, and suddenly you’re thinking about how to contain runs rather than trying to take wickets. He was fantastic. We left day one feeling like we were on top of the game, mainly down to those two guys. Yeah, [our bowling attack was] fantastic. Scotty Boland is now my favourite player. He always has been, but he just continues to be my favourite. Yeah, everyone just did their role really well. Again, coming off a bit of a break for most of us, when it counted everyone kind of switched on and got a key breakthrough. We’ll savour this [win] for a few days before we turn our attention [to the Ashes]. [The interest in Test cricket is] huge. You ask anyone in our change room – it’s obviously our favourite format. We grew up watching Test cricket. We love it. It challenges you in more ways than any other format. And I think when you’re winning in this format, you get the most satisfaction. It’s here to stay. We love playing, and you saw the turnout this week. It’s been fantastic.”Related

Travis Head, Player of the Match: “You come here and you get a week and you have to prep and it’s probably hard to imagine, but a lot of hard work [has been put in] over two years – so it’s been nice. Yeah, that [playing positively] has been the approach for those two years, I guess. I wanted to be able to be proactive and score for them, and then when they bowl in nice areas, be good enough to stay out there for long periods of time. I was tested throughout the whole innings. I knew that coming in, so had an eye for what plans are going to come. So, it’s nice to be out there for a period of time as well as [bat] with Smudge [Steven Smith]. It was, it was an amazing week. I guess I’ve always had the confidence. It’s probably been [about] going out there and expressing that, it took me some time, and everyone goes through those periods of their blueprint and first-class cricket and Test cricket and what needs to change. I’ve always been open to change; always been open for learning and always been committed to knowing I have to do things differently as you step up. That’s somewhat of a blueprint and it’s not always going to work. Will try to be as consistent as I possibly can for the team on field [and] off field. It’s nice to work out in such a big game and hopefully, that continues in the next couple of months. Last night, there were a lot of what-ifs, and we came this morning knowing exactly what you said: [in] the last two years we’ve had some moments [where] we’ve had to grind out. You look over a lot of the Test matches over the last few years we’ve come across moments where we’ve sort of bedded down and doubled down on our plans. We were able to do that again today and [we] double down on them and reap the rewards.”Pat Cummins walks off the field after winning the World Test Championship•AFP/Getty Images

Mitchell Starc: “We were patient enough and the wickets came to us. They’re a quality line-up, and we had to be patient to get those breakthroughs and the whole bowling attack today was fantastic. Yeah, you need that little run of the green [Steven Smith’s catch to dismiss Virat Kohli] and to have him in the slips is fantastic. He pulled off another stunner along with Greeny [Cameron Green] through the game. So, those little moments there can tend to be the difference and particularly to get the wicket of Kohli, that was fantastic for us and really set us on our way. Particularly, the way he [Ajinkya Rahane] played in the first innings with [Shardul] Thakur as well; they put [up] a nice partnership, and we knew we couldn’t just take the foot off the gas there. Look, we stuck with it and stayed patient enough. We knew if we stuck to our areas long enough, we could get chances and fortunately enough, we got them quickly. Yeah, this group has been fantastic for a long time and we ourselves got a few goals along the way, particularly the last series in India, which didn’t go our way, but this [WTC final] was the next in line. I mean the way this group has played for the last two years or probably longer is a credit to everyone who has taken part in this wider group – players and staff – and we will enjoy this together this afternoon and then push on for the Ashes. Obviously, just coming off that Test series [in India], not too long ago, both sides are very familiar with one another. Obviously, a number of guys [play] in the IPL as well. So, to play each other on a neutral territory…I think it has been a fantastic Test match and fantastic cricket to watch. We’re going to enjoy this moment as a group and obviously, Nathan [Lyon] is going to enjoy himself too.”1:46

Haddin: Boland’s natural length really effective in England

Scott Boland: “Yeah, it was good fun. It was nice to come over here for our bowling group and take 20 wickets. Probably hit similar areas all the time and there was sort of a little bit of bounce outside the off stump, so tried to exploit that. Yeah, it [dismissing Kohli] was nice. Pretty good to get Kohli out and get two [wickets] in an over. Smudge [Steven Smith] today and Green took some blinders throughout the game as well, so nice to get the confidence. I wouldn’t say that [taking wickets for fun]. I’ve been playing state cricket for Victoria for about 12 years, so I’ve done some hard work and it’s nice to play international cricket and get some wickets. Yeah, it [the Ashes series] should be good, next Friday we will start. I’m really looking forward to it.”Steven Smith: “Yeah, I think it’s a great achievement for this group. We’ve played some really good cricket over the last two years to firstly get to this situation to play a final against India, who have also been exceptional over the last two years. So, I think it’s fitting to be in this game and I think the way we played this week was outstanding. On the first day, we just got us into a nice position and Trav [Travis Head] obviously played exceptionally well and I watched him do his work at the other end. I sort of played second fiddle and from that first day, we sort of controlled the game, I suppose, and there were probably glimpses where we allowed them to come back in with a few unforced errors. But all throughout, we felt we were in reasonable control. We know how good Virat is. He’s an exceptional player and he’s very dangerous, particularly when chasing totals. I thought the spell this morning from Scott Boland was outstanding. He beat the bat a couple of times and he was hitting great areas. To fortunately take the edge and for the catch to sit safely in the hands was nice and we knew we needed that wicket. And then to get [Ravindra] Jadeja as well in the same over as well was a huge moment. He has also scored a lot of runs against us recently, so that set us up for the morning and then things happened pretty quickly from there.”

Liverpool accept bid for 6 ft 4 gem to leave Anfield in out of window move

Liverpool have reportedly reached an agreement to allow a 22-year-old to leave Anfield outside of the transfer window.

Alexander-Arnold agrees Liverpool exit as Carragher urges Reds to make six signings

It has been an eventful few days behind the scenes at Anfield, with Trent Alexander-Arnold edging closer to a move to Real Madrid when his Reds contract expires in the summer.

An agreement has reportedly been reached and a move to the Bernabeu is “99% done”, with Jeremie Frimpong the rumoured top target to come in to replace the right-back from Bayer Leverkusen. Arne Slot appears to be driving the move and has held talks with Frimpong’s representatives.

It promises to be an active summer window for Liverpool, and Jamie Carragher wants to see up to six players signed over the coming months, with a replacement for Alexander-Arnold on the to-do list.

“I’m excited to see where Arne Slot will take Liverpool because it looks like they’re going to win the league, but there are still so many areas to improve. He needs a centre-back as back-up to the two that we have, he’ll need a right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold likely to leave.

“I think he needs a centre midfielder to replace Endo, someone younger and that he trusts, a centre-forward to play and a left-winger. There are at least five or six players he needs to get in – three to go straight in the team and three to be strong back-ups.”

Liverpool and FSG make contact to sign new £40m+ forward to replace Nunez

Alexander-Arnold isn’t the only player who could leave for nothing, with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah’s futures yet to be resolved either.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are happy to loan out forward Federico Chiesa ahead of the 2025/26 season, however, the Reds have already agreed to loan out one youngster in an out-of-window transfer.

Liverpool agree deal to loan out 6ft 4 gem until summer

According to reports in Sweden, relayed by Sport Witness, Liverpool have reached an agreement with Utsiktens BK for Jakub Ojrzynski. The update states that the 22-year-old goalkeeper will be loaned out to the Swedish side until the summer.

Ojrzynski, who stands at 6 foot 4, made the move to Merseyside from Legia Warsaw back in 2019 but is yet to make a senior appearance for the Reds.

In recent years, the Polish youth international has been on loan with Caernarfon Town, Radomiak Radom and Den Bosch and was supposed to join Cypriot second-tier side Spartakos Kitiou last summer.

However, a transfer fell through and Ojrzynski remained with the Reds, where he has since trained with Slot’s first team. Now, though, it looks as if he’ll get the chance to play first-team football in Sweden over the coming weeks, with Liverpool accepting the loan offer presented by Utsiktens BK.

Shane Snater six ends Essex’s quarter-final hoodoo against Birmingham Bears

Essex became the first team through to 2023 Vitality Blast Finals Day after beating Birmingham Bears by two wickets in a thrilling quarter-final at Edgbaston. The Bears charged through the group stage with 11 wins out of 14 but bowed out at the quarter-final stage for the third successive year in the face of a commanding display from Simon Harmer’s side.Disciplined Essex bowling, backed up by excellent fielding, restricted the Bears to 167 for 6. Sam Hain struck a typically polished 52 (26 balls) but, tied down by Harmer (4-0-20-1) and Sam Cook (4-0-24-2), the home side needed some late flailing from Chris Benjamin and Dominic Drakes to at least approach par.Essex then reach 171 for 8 with two balls to spare. Dan Lawrence underpinned the chase with a high-class 62 (41 balls) and Paul Walter’s violent 15-ball 27 retained his side’s control at a vital time mid-innings. The Bears fought hard in the closing overs and Essex needed three from the last two balls before Shane Snater hit the first of them for six.Essex chose to field and started brilliantly as Daniel Sams delivered a wicket maiden. Rob Yates skied the third ball of the innings to third man and it was not until the eighth that the Bears opened their account with a top-edged two. 5 for 1 from 14 balls was not a start to excite the 10,812 crowd.Glenn Maxwell pulled the 15th ball for six but Alex Davies fell in the next over, adjudged, after an interminable review, to have gloved a pull at Aaron Beard.Maxwell added five fours to his six in a punchy 32 but then pulled Walter to deep mid-wicket where Sams took a calm catch and celebrated with a fist-pump to the raucous Hollies Stand. When, 17 balls later, the Aussie accepted another catch to oust Dan Mousley, this time he turned and shushed the Hollies… it had gone rather quiet.Harmer increased the pressure by conceding just three in his first over and bowling Jake Bethell in his second. Hain posted his 25th T20 half-century, from 33 balls, but then sliced Cook to short third. With Hain went the Bears’ hopes of a really imposing total and it was left to Benjamin and Drakes to eke 34 from the last 21 balls to heave the total over 150.The Bears needed to strike early but Adam Rossington clouted 21 from 11 balls to make immediate inroads into the modest target.Related

Counties eye Finals Day as T20 Blast reaches quarter-final stage

Rossington was run out by smart work from Davies but Essex thundered to 77 for 1 from 41 balls before a wobble arrived with two wickets in three balls, Michael Pepper slicing to short third man and Feroze Khushi socking a Jake Lintott full toss to deep midwicket.Successive sixes by Walter off Maxwell reasserted the visitors’ control and Lawrence continued to work the ball round with consummate skill before his departure set up a tense finish. With seven needed from two overs, Lawrence lifted the next ball, from Drakes, to mid on. A superb over from the West Indian cost just a single and saw Harmer run out from the last ball, leaving six still to find from the last over, bowled by Olly Hannon-Dalby.That came down to three from the last two balls, the first of which Snater socked for a straight six to end Essex’s quarter-final hoodoo against the Bears who won both their previous meetings in the last eight.Having squeezed through the group stage by the skin of their teeth, and now survived a tight quarter-final, Essex will return to Edgbaston for Finals Day on July 15 believing this may well be their year.

Keith Barker five-for gives Hampshire upper hand against Somerset

Left-armer rips through visitors as they concede 171-run first-innings deficit

ECB Reporters Network04-Sep-2023

Keith Barker claimed his first five-for of the season•Getty Images

Keith Barker blew Somerset away with his first LV=Insurance County Championship five-wicket haul of the season as Hampshire took control on day two at the Ageas Bowl. Left-arm seamer Barker had only taken 14 wickets in his opening eight red-ball appearances of 2023 but after a fine Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign, roared back with 5 for 32 to see off Somerset for 137.Andy Umeed scored 43, to follow up Jack Brooks’ first five-wicket haul of the season, but the visitors’ hopes of victory took a hefty blow. Despite a 171-run lead, Hampshire batted again and reached 45 without loss in 23 watchful evening overs to extend their lead to 216.After Sean Dickson had been brilliantly caught at third slip by James Vince off Barker in the third over, Tom Lammonby and Tom Abell bedded in for over an hour either side of lunch. The pair put on 51, but Abell lbw to Barker sparked a collapse from 51 for 1 to 67 for 5, from which they wouldn’t fully recover.Barker has endured an underwhelming Championship campaign, due in part to missing matches after he fractured both his hands while batting in the early stages. His 10 wickets in six One-Day Cup matches have warmed him up for the season’s final month. The former Warwickshire quick took a heavy-handed Lammonby’s outside edge before pinning Tom Kohler-Cadmore. Division One’s leading run scorer, heading into the round, James Rew prodded to short leg off Liam Dawson, Lewis Gregory played on to Mohammad Abbas, Ben Green edged Abbott behind and Neil Wagner was bowledUmeed – fresh from 613 One-Day Cup runs – had been in survival mode but once the eighth wicket fell started to unleash. He reached 43 before he missed a big swing and was stumped to give Dawson 3 for 61. Barker had the final word by having Shoaib Bashir lbw before celebrating his five wickets with his trademark one-arm raised celebrappeal.Somerset gave up a 171-run first-innings deficit but James Vince elected against enforcing the follow-on. Toby Albert and Fletcha Middleton bedded in, heeding century-maker Dawson’s advice to bat long to score runs. It made for a lifeless final 23 overs of the day – during which Wagner attempted a short-pitched onslaught on a pitch not suited to such a tactic, Hampshire closing on 45 without loss.Earlier, Brooks bolstered his impressive Ageas Bowl record to 21 wickets at an average of 16.85 in four matches with two morning wickets – as Hampshire added 26 to their overnight score to be bowled out for 308. Barker was caught off his inside edge before Dawson was pinned by Brooks to end his 115-run stay. Kyle Abbott swatted back-to-back boundaries to gather a second batting bonus point but chipped to cover.Brooks returned 5 for 56 – his third five-wicket haul on the ground – and first in four Championship appearances this season.
