According to Il Mattino, Tottenham are keen to sign Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer. 

The Italian outlet claims that the Lilywhites are among a number of suitors eyeing up a move for the Napoli defender in the upcoming transfer window. Gianluca di Marzio previously told Sky Sports that Spurs are interested in Koulibaly and revealed that Daniel Levy has a close connection to the player’s representatives.

Understandably, this latest development could benefit Japhet Tanganga.

It is fair to say that Koulibaly has been linked with the majority of Europe’s biggest clubs at some point. The 28-year-old has emerged as one of the best defenders in the world, making 15 appearances in Serie A for Gennaro Gattuso’s side this season and starring in six games in the Champions League – attempting 2.2 tackles per game, averaging 1.5 interceptions and completing a whopping 5.2 clearances on average in the European competition (WhoScored).

Jose Mourinho is in the hunt for a new centre-back as he needs to fix his team’s defensive frailties. Spurs have shockingly conceded more goals in the Premier League than Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United so far.

However, Tanganga has been one of the few success stories in a difficult season for the club. The 21-year-old has played in a variety of different positions across the back line and impressed the manager in his debut against Liverpool. Nonetheless, the north London club are pursuing the Senegalese defender with great intent.

While there is no doubt that Tanganga should save the club millions in the future, he is still at the early stages of his career and could pick up valuable tips and tricks from the Senegal international.

Indeed, Koulibaly’s experience at the top levels of the game could make a massive difference when Spurs resume their hunt for silverware next season. He could even act as a mentor to the young Englishman on and off the pitch.

The usually watertight defence of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have struggled to convince the critics this season and, with Vertonghen seemingly heading out the door, there is room for another experienced centre-back to take his place.

However, the report adds that Koulibaly has also attracted the attention of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and it is unlikely that Mourinho will be able to afford his hefty £50m valuation due to the economic uncertainty surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

كشف الصحفي الإيطالي الموثوق، فابريزيو رومانو، بشبكة “سكاي سبورتس” العالمية، عن رسالة الفرنسي، كيليان مبابي، لزملائه في غرفة خلع ملابس باريس سان جيرمان، حيث أكد لهم أنه سينضم إلى ريال مدريد.

مبابي هدف ريال مدريد، مُنذ عامين، وحاول النادي الملكي، التعاقد معه في الصيف المُنصرم، وقدم أكثر من عرض لضمه، ولكن النادي الباريسي رفض رحيله بشتى الطرق.

ونقلت صحيفة “موندو ديبورتيفو” الإسبانية، تصريحات لـ رومانو من خلال قناته على منصة “YouTube”، حيث أوضح أن مبابي أكد لزملائه أنه سينضم إلى ريال مدريد.

يُذكر أن ينتهي عقد مبابي الحالي مع باريس سان جيرمان في يونيو 2022، ويسعى النادي الفرنسي للحصول على توقيع اللاعب للاستمرار لسنوات أخرى وغلق جميع الطرق أمام ريال مدريد لضم الفرنسي.

Mason Greenwood – his career so far

By now, Mason Greenwood is a well-known quantity at Manchester United and if the early signs are anything to go by at all, soon the whole footballing world should become quite familiar with his name.

The 18-year-old centre-forward is still only getting started with his career and yet, it seems that he’s already destined for greatness, such is the extent of his talent and potential. His first footballing steps, however, were made in Man United’s academy, which he joined at the age of six, training and developing in Halifax.

His progress through the youth ranks was quite swift and by the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Greenwood was already on the doorstep of the Red Devils’ U18 squad. This was quite impressive, especially since he was still a schoolboy registered with the U16s and yet he managed to end the campaign as the Premier League North’s top-scorer.

All of that success was soon followed up with a call-up to the senior team’s pre-season tour and after blistering starts with both the U18s and U19s in the UEFA Youth Cup, he was rewarded with his first professional contract in October that same year.

Of course, there would still be hurdles to jump over before he could be considered a fully-fledged first-team player and as a whole, Greenwood played a total of 34 games for the U18 squad, netting 34 goals and eight assists while his shorter stay with the U23s was marked with eight games, five goals and two assists.

After sitting on the bench for one of the senior games, the now 18-year-old centre-forward would finally get his debut at the Parc des Princes in Man United’s second leg of a knockout Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019. His first start came in the final game of the Premier League season against Cardiff City at Old Trafford.

But he came a long way since his bow with the first-team, already tallying 40 games under his belt and scoring a total of 12 goals and assisting another four in the process as well.

Needless to say, he is one for the future and the Red Devils are extremely lucky to have him in their ranks.

Transfer latest

It’s pretty safe to say that Greenwood is not going anywhere for the foreseeable future. He is already a far too important piece of the Man United puzzle to be even considering the possibility of leaving Old Trafford.

Not only that but some recent transfer rumours suggest that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is even scrapping the potential signing of Harry Kane because it could harm Greenwood’s development. That is some huge Manchester United news for the fans right there.

On a similar note, the youngster has been so widely praised in the media in recent times that it wouldn’t really surprise to see other top teams and various transfer news start to appear in the conversation as we approach the summer transfer window.

But as things currently stand, Greenwood is staying at Man United and there are really no two ways about it.

Player profile

Earlier in his career, Greenwood was usually deployed as the no.10, slotting right behind the centre-forward and often being the link between the middle and the final thirds of the pitch. But over the years, his game has evolved and the young gem is now more of a striker himself.

What immediately catches the eye is his ability to play with both feet and his exceptional movement across the final third and especially inside the box, where he is adept and creating and exploiting space for both himself and his teammates.

And since he is versatile enough and possesses the pace and good technical abilities, he’s also been known to shift out wide to the right side at Man United. But even so, he often drifts back centrally and pins down the defenders during the offensive phase.

While he can use his speed to beat opponents in a direct 1v1 confrontation, he often uses it to exploit free pockets of space across the pitch. His intelligent movement and positioning, paired up with lethality and technique, make him an incredibly difficult player to mark and a huge asset to his team.

Noel Whelan insists Tottenham defender Juan Foyth would be a ‘great signing’ for Leeds United. 

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker believes Foyth has vital experience in the Premier League which could make a massive difference.

Last month, the outlet revealed Leeds’ director of football Victor Orta is monitoring the 22-year-old, and Spurs are keen to get rid of him in the transfer market.

Ole claimed last week that the youngster has agreed personal terms with the Peacocks ahead of a season-long loan for next season.

Whelan told football writer Dylan Childs “it is really important we get him in early so he can have somewhat of a preseason with the squad.

“Bielsa had a good relationship with Pochettino at Tottenham as well as Pep Guardiola at Manchester City so that deal was always on the cards.

“He never made it any secret that he was interested in that player but he was needed at Tottenham during that spell.

“Now Pochettino has gone and Mourinho has come in, he is not wanted.

“It would be a great signing. An Argentina international at a great age and he knows what the Premier League is all about. It would be a shrewd bit of business if they can get it done now.

“It would be one body in place for next season if we cannot lure Ben White back to Leeds.”

It is difficult to disagree with Whelan on this one, as a move to Elland Road would be beneficial for all parties involved.

Ever since he arrived at White Hart Lane in 2017, Foyth was considered a prodigy of Mauricio Pochettino, but he has now fallen out of favour with Pochettino’s successor.

He has only played seven times all season, including one sole appearance in the Premier League, and finds himself below the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld in the pecking order.

Although it is fair to say Foyth has struggled this season, he is clearly an experienced professional, and he impressed Jose Mourinho with his performance during the 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Moreover, Bielsa has a history of nurturing talent, as he has arguably transformed the Whites by giving young players like Kalvin Phillips plenty of opportunities.

Reports from Argentina suggest Foyth is on his way out the door on a short-term loan, and this could work in Mourinho’s favour, as Tottenham will no doubt benefit if his older compatriot can develop him into a top-class defender.

Liverpool’s rich history and recent run of success can often distort what a rollercoaster of a ride it’s been. The positive signings and season-defining moments can make a lot of people forget just how much the Reds have struggled in the past.

Rafa Benitez had just let one of the side’s best players leave in a £30million move to Real Madrid. An influential midfielder who helped Liverpool reach the dizzying heights of their 2005 Champions League win and 2006 FA Cup success. Steven Gerrard and Co needed someone of similar calibre to fill the void in midfield.

It would be a tall ask and, certainly in hindsight, one Benitez would not be able to deliver on.

Alberto Aquilani was welcomed to the club in the summer of 2009, after Liverpool agreed a £20m fee with Roma. The Italian’s stats weren’t spellbinding during his time in the capital, but he had the promise to contribute to the Reds’ engine room. However, nothing could’ve been further from reality.

In the three years he was a Liverpool player, Aquilani made just 28 appearances and spent the rest of his time out on loan. He missed the opening eight matches of the Premier League in the 2009/10 season with an ankle injury sustained in Italy.

The midfielder managed to muster up a measly two goals in his 28 matches played across all competitions for the Reds, with just six assists to top that off (via Transfermarkt). Off the back of his debut season, he was sent out on loan twice before Fiorentina decided to take him off Liverpool’s hands permanently.

Aquilani moved back to Italy in a €7m (£6.3m) transfer to Fiorentina, where he made more of an impact, but didn’t set the league alight.

Ultimately, Liverpool saw a huge 68.5% loss on what they originally forked out for the midfield man. A massive deficit which has no doubt created a sense of wariness for the club as they approach future deals.
