Styris takes to the record books, and Otago

A famous innings of 212 not out by Scott Styris dominated the third day of the State Championship match between Northern Districts and Otago at WestpacTrust Park, Hamilton

Peter Hoare20-Mar-2002A famous innings of 212 not out by Scott Styris dominated the third day of the State Championship match between Northern Districts and Otago at WestpacTrust Park, Hamilton.Resuming on an overnight score of 127 not out – already his career-best – Styris ravaged the Otago attack for two hours before ND declared at 460/7. The visitors fought back in the second half of the day, at the end of which they were 176/2, needing a further 166 to make ND bat again.Styris did not so much rewrite the record book, as put it through the shredder. It was the highest individual score by an ND batsman in the 46 seasons that the association has been in existence, beating Graeme Hick’s 211 against Canterbury in 1988/89.The partnership of 191 between Styris and Robbie Hart was the best for the ND sixth wicket, surpassing the 180 between Hart’s brother Matthew and Shane Thomson against Canterbury in 1992/93.The 10 sixes hit by Styris have been bettered only three times in New Zealand, by Dipak Patel (12 for Auckland v ND in 1991/92) and John R Reid (15 for Wellington v ND in 1962/63) and most recently by Nathan Astle in Saturday’s Test innings when he hit 11 sixes. Styris also struck 14 fours in his 236-ball innings.Styris and Hart set out to dominate from the outset. Thirty-seven runs came from the first five overs. A back-foot cover drive off David Sewell and an upper-cut six off Kerry Walmsley were the pick of a series of beautifully-timed shots from Styris.Opening bowlers Walmsley and Sewell were soon removed from the attack, leaving spinners Nathan Morland, Scott Waide and Jordan Sheed in the firing line. Neither of the latter two had taken a first-class wicket before today. The only time Styris’ rhythm faltered was when he entered the nervous 190s, though he was dropped twice before reaching three figures yesterday. The statistics give some idea of the power and stroke-making of the innings, but it was much more than good hitting.Styris played shots all around the wicket off all types of bowling. His judgment was as impressive as his strokeplay. As the morning went on, Otago became resigned to their fate, their collective body language increasingly resembling that of mourners at a funeral. Their fielding failed to compensate for deficiencies in the attack.Hart was dropped twice as he moved on to 66, though this did not devalue his contribution to the partnership one jot. The pace of his scoring increased this morning, culminating in a six over the sightscreen off Sheed, before he was out leg before wicket to Morland.Speaking to CricInfo at the end of the day, Styris described himself as being “calm and collected” during his innings.”I was in control of my objectives. It was good to achieve what I was trying to do,” he said.Styris welcomed the opportunity to bat up the order in the State Championship this season.”I am trying to change my role into that of a batsman who bowls a bit,” he said. “I have been batting up the order in the one-day version of the game for a couple of seasons and that’s definitely where I want my career to go.”Styris rejects the ‘one-day specialist’ label that is often attached to him.”It’s other people who label me as that. That’s the form of the game that I enjoy most, but I’m looking to break into the Test side and if I can keep putting scores like that up on the board then hopefully I’ll get my chance.”ND coach Bruce Blair described Styris as “a batsman with a tremendous amount of natural ability. He has a lot of attacking shots. It was evident to me from the start of the season that if we put together a batting plan that meant that looked for more singles than he has previously, he could become a very high quality top-order first-class and international batsman,” he told CricInfo. “He oozes talent.”Today the planning and practice paid off.”It was one of the better four-day innings that I have seen for a long time,” said Blair. “It was a good mixture of defence and consolidation with some outstanding attacking batting. It was a great innings to watch.”When Brendon McCullum was out without scoring to the last ball before lunch, a third-day finish was on the cards. But a breezy partnership of 110 between Craig Cumming and Chris Gaffeney restored faith in the Otago batting. Gaffeney scored 56, including six fours and two sixes, before falling to Matthew Hart’s first delivery of the match, caught by James Marshall at first slip.Cumming (74 not out) and newcomer Sheed (39 not out) batted though the final session putting on an unbroken 64 for the third wicket. Though the pace was slower, it was still good cricket, with the bowlers bowling accurately while the batsmen were organised and disciplined.Northern Districts should win the game tomorrow, but Otago have shown what can be achieved on what remains a high quality pitch.

England Women's training squad announced for Indian Summer

England’s selectors have named the 18 player training squad, from which a final 14 players will be chosen to represent their country in the inaugural women’s international one-day triangular tournament against India and New Zealand this summer

Media Release17-Apr-2002England’s selectors have named the 18 player training squad, from which a final 14 players will be chosen to represent their country in the inaugural women’s international one-day triangular tournament against India and New Zealand this summer. England will also play two test matches against India in August.Charlotte Edwards (Kent) and Claire Taylor (Berkshire), England’s most prolific batsmen in recent years, return to the squad following injuries. Edwards, England’s leading run-scorer, has been out since the World Cup in December 2000 following cruciate ligament damage to her knee.21-year-old Caroline Atkins (Sussex) and 20-year-old Arran Thompson (Lancs) will pair up again following their World Record opening test partnership of 200, against India in Luknow in January. With stability returning to the England batting order, England’s most experienced player, Clare Taylor MBE (Yorkshire) will resume international bowling duty this summer with a career total of 99 wickets. One more will make her the first English woman to take 100 international wickets and only the third player in the world to do so.

England coach, John Harmer said: "Although the winter tour to India wasdisappointing, the players are improving all the time and it was great to see two young players take the world record in India".This season also sees the introduction of 'Super Fours', a new domesticcompetition for elite women players across the country, which takes place in April and May. Harmer confirmed: "Super Fours provides an opportunity for someone on the fringe of the squad to break into the England team if they play well".England's Chairman of Selectors, Patsy Lovell said: "It was difficult to choose 18 players as we welcomed back many talented cricketers either from injury or the university commitments which kept them at home this winter. It will be harder to chose the final 14, especially if Super Fours proves as competitive as we think it will."The triangular tournament will be a first for both women's cricket and theisland of Jersey, which has never before hosted international cricket. The itinerary for Women's international cricket this summer is as follows:

Everton transfer update on Demiral

Everton are reportedly leading the race to sign Merih Demiral in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Everton need centre-back

The Goodison Park faithful certainly need to invest in their defence if they have the ambition to qualify for European competition next season, given that they conceded no fewer than 48 goals in the Premier League in the last campaign.

A new centre-back would go a long way towards resolving that, and would give the Merseyside club another handy option alongside the likes of Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Yerry Mina.

The Latest: Everton lead Demiral race

As per Calciomercato, the Toffees are ‘ahead of others’ in the race to sign Demiral, who reportedly wants to leave Juventus.

Both Atalanta and AS Roma are also in the hunt for his signature, but the Old Lady will not sell him for anything less than €40m (£34.3m).

The Verdict: Sign him quickly

Even though Turkey went out at the group stages at Euro 2020, Demiral performed very well for his country at times, averaging a mammoth 6.7 clearances, as well as 1.7 interceptions and 1.3 tackles a game, while also winning 4.3 of his duels per match (Sofascore).

Given that all eyes have been on the tournament, he is likely to have grabbed the attention of other clubs in addition to the likes of Atalanta and Roma, meaning that the Blues may need to sign him quickly.

At six-feet-two-inches tall, Demiral should have no problems at all in coping with both the physical and aerial demands of the Premier League, and at just 23 years of age, he will only get better.

Nonetheless, if given the chance, EFC should be all over a deal for the big central defender.

Southampton missed out on Takehiro Tomiyasu

Southampton reportedly bid for Takehiro Tomiyasu in January but were unable to agree a deal, and with the Japan international now heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, it seems that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side may have missed out on a gem.

According to the Evening Standard, the Saints made an offer for the Bologna man in January and returned the following month to enquire about a potential summer switch, but it was thought that a bigger move was on the cards for the 22-year-old.

It now seems likely that the Japanese centre-back will complete a move to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side this summer, with Spurs in talks with the Serie A outfit over a potential deal for the defender.

Last season saw the youngster make 31 appearances in Serie A for the Rossoblù, contributing two goals and averaging a solid 6.77 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

The £18m-rated defender has featured regularly as a centre-back, right-back and defensive midfielder in his career thus far, and given Hasenhuttl’s preference for versatile players at Southampton, it seems clear that he could have been a stellar addition.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

It is no surprise that the Austrian was reportedly keen on the Japan international in January when you consider that he was forced to deploy James Ward-Prowse and Jan Bednarek at right-back in the absence of Kyle Walker-Peters after Yan Valery was sent out on loan to Birmingham.

Tomiyasu could have been a great player to compete with Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard at centre-back, whilst also covering for Walker-Peters on the right, as he has plenty of experience in Serie A despite being so young.

His performances in Italy earned him the praise of teammate Mitchell Dijks, who said: “He is very strong, a real Japanese warrior.”

After their advances in January and February were rejected, it seems unlikely that Southampton will be able to negotiate a deal for Tomiyasu this summer. If he does join Spurs and become a success, then he will unfortunately be regarded as one who got away for the Saints.

Confira as notas do LANCE!:

Fourth-wicket pair gives India edge

THE West Indies desperately clawed their way back into contention on the third day of the second Test yesterday but, even amidst the euphoria of dismissing Sachin Tendulkar for a fourth-ball duck, their grip was never more than tenuous

Tony Cozier22-Apr-2002THE West Indies desperately clawed their way back into contention on the third day of the second Test yesterday but, even amidst the euphoria of dismissing Sachin Tendulkar for a fourth-ball duck, their grip was never more than tenuous. On a slow, heartless pitch, they didn’t have the strength to sustain it and, by the time fading light ended the day 40 minutes past the appointed time with four of the 98 allocated overs unused, they were precariously hanging on by their fingertips. An unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 109 between the left-handed captain Sourav Ganguly and the silken right-hander V.V.S.Laxman occupied the last three hours of another blazing hot day. It also gradually silenced the pandemonium that broke out when Tendulkar was the third wicket to fall for two runs in the space of quarter-hour in the middle session. The two stabilised India’s position, then slowly and surely restored the advantage as an unsteady 54 for four 40 minutes after lunch was converted to 165 for the same four at stumps. It gives India an overall lead of 254 with Ganguly and Laxman still entrenched, even if a suspect tail is to follow. It is an equation that means they can dictate terms over the final two days at the Queen’s Park Oval where they have gained their only two victories in 34 previous Tests in the Caribbean. The fact that the last time the West Indies won batting last on the ground they got 282 for seven against England four years ago is counterbalanced by last innings totals of 51 (against Australia), 63 (by Zimbabwe) and 162 (against South Africa) in the three Queen’s Park Tests since.Ganguly, out for five and 25 in his previous two innings, resumes this morning 48, and Laxman, extending the form that brought him earlier scores of 69 and 69 not out, 60. Their partnership is already the second highest of the match. The last half of the day was as frustrating for the West Indies as the first had been encouraging. The last four wickets, that had averaged 14 over the previous six Tests, added another 48 on the day, 65 overall, before India wrapped up the innings two hours into the day for 245.It still represented a deficit of 94 but if West Indies could restrict their eventual winning target to under 300 they would have a chance.Merv Dillon claimed opener Shiv Sunder Das for nought in the six overs before the first interval but, on resumption, he and the other bowlers were making no impression on Sanjay Bangar and Rahul Dravid in a second-wicket stand of 48 when the game took as sudden a twist as it had in the closing stages the previous day when Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Junior Murray toppled for one run.Adam Sanford, all bustle and enthusiasm, took opener Bangar’s outside edge on the drive for a catch to second slip.Three balls later, Dravid, playing with the fluent assurance of a batsman with scores of 144 not out and 67 in the series, got a thin leg-side deflection to Cameron Cuffy and wicket-keeper Murray gathered the catch to remove him for 36.As always, Tendulkar was the key Indian wicket. The game’s premier batsman, who completed his 29th Test hundred with his first innings 117, received a warm welcome. Not only do Trinidadians appreciate class, there are thousands here who have a soft spot for the land, and the cricketers, of their forefathers.Tendulkar held up the West Indies for over six hours and 260 balls for his first innings 117. Now he lasted only quarter-hour as his fourth ball from Sanford took him on the pad as he jumped back, aiming to push into the leg-side.His surprise at finding Sri Lankan umpire Asoka deSilva’s raised finger upholding the roared West Indian appeal was justifiable, for the ball appeared heading over the stumps.Given his luck with decisions in the first innings, it was another instance that verified the age-old dictum that things eventually even themselves out in this game.It set off even more bacchanalian celebrations around the ground than usual and, as India went to tea 77 for four, it was obvious the last session would determine the course of the match and possibly the result. The realisation did not seem to occur to the usually miserly Cuffy, whose first two deliveries on resumption were inviting half-volleys that Laxman duly latched onto for a couple of driven off-side boundaries.Apart from a genuine appeal for a keeper’s catch when Ganguly, then 24, drove at Dillon, there was little to encourage the West Indies after that as bats got broader.Umpire deSilva probably based his verdict on legitimate doubt since Ganguly’s bat brushed the ground and threw up a cloud of dust. Even the television replay provided no conclusive evidence. In the morning, it took India almost two hours and 22.5 overs to wrap up the West Indies innings. It had been undermined late on the second day when three wickets tumbled for one run within ten balls after Lara’s dismissal for 52 and they resumed at 197 for six with their eventual total heavily dependent on captain Carl Hooper who was 30.While Hooper carefully added 20 from the 49 balls he received before he was ninth out for 50 to a catch at extra-cover off left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan, Dillon, Black and Sanford offered him useful support. They at least ensured that the deficit was reduced to double figures, but on a hard, dry, basically true pitch likely to become progressively worn, India’s lead was still strong.
