India were favourites, says Hussain

Nasser Hussain believes England have learned from Sachin Tendulkar’s example after he scored a century in the washed-out NatWest match between England and India at Chester-le-Street

Stephen Lamb05-Jul-2002Nasser Hussain believes England have learned from Sachin Tendulkar’s example after he scored a century in the washed-out NatWest match between England and India at Chester-le-Street.India’s master batsman hit an unbeaten 105 and shared a record fourth-wicket stand of 169 with Rahul Dravid (82) to help his team post an impressive 285 for four after a shaky start.”We really learned how to go about a one-day innings and the little mastershowed us that,” Hussain said. “I had no complaints about our bowling or fielding because we were right in it at about 40 overs and then he just took the game away from us.””We’re very happy with what we did the other night, but we have to get our thinking caps on and work out how we’re going to beat India, both in the one-dayers and Test matches, and how we’re going to get through this batting line-up.”I would say that India were favourites when it ended because when a side gets 280, you’re up against it. We do have a long batting line-up and we were in a similar position to what they were, and it would have taken two special innings similar to what they produced.”Hussain also praised the umpires for doing all they could to contrive a re-start.”I think the two umpires played it pretty well,” he said. “They tried to get us back on twice, but in the end the rain just set in.”Meanwhile Tendulkar was delighted after finally reaching a hundred in a one-dayer against England.”It has been quite some time coming,” Tendulkar said. “The first one-dayer I played against England was back in 1990. I have got close before but somehow missed out. It is quite good that I have been able to achieve it now.”

Celtic: Christie impresses in UCL qualifying

The puzzling case of Ryan Christie’s Celtic career has just grown even more stranger.

The Scot is one of the most enigmatic players in the Hoops squad and if anything proved that, it was his display on Tuesday night.

Christie grabbed the bull by the horns and on a night where they were missing James Forrest, he truly delivered in a wide position as they drew 1-1 with Midtjylland.

His form last season was nothing short of disastrous as he scored just seven goals compared to the 20 he racked up in 2019/20.

He took immense criticism from supporters and heading into this summer, it looked as though his time at Parkhead was done and dusted.

The attacking midfielder’s contract expires in January, fielding interest from both Crystal Palace and Sampdoria.

However, on this evidence, he’s still a valuable player for new Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

Liel Abada scored their goal on debut, but after he was forced to be withdrawn in the first half following Nir Bitton’s red card, Christie was the real bright spark.

The 26-year-old was playing out of position again but still performed excellently on the left-hand flank.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Christie was vibrant and a constant thorn in the Midtjylland defence. He completed four key passes which was more than anyone else on the pitch.

He also recorded a game-high four dribbles and was successful with 100% of his long duels.

The forward did hit the post from one of Abada’s tantalising deliveries but everything else he did was close to perfection as he stole the show at Paradise.

Alex McLeish described him as the “complete package” earlier this summer and on this evidence, it was easy to see why.

Christie wasn’t just capable in offensive areas but he did the dirty work well too. He won a whopping 11 defensive duels throughout the contest, the most of any player on the pitch.

It’s been a rare occurrence over the last 12 months where we can stand up and really applaud him but this was a display that deserved praise.

He might just be playing for a move but that won’t bother Celtic. The longer he produces performances like this, the better chance the Bhoys have of being in the Champions League group stages this term.

AND in other news, Celtic could find their new Christie by signing 44-goal gem with the “style of Robben”…

Gilchrist doesn't want boycott

PERTH, Aug 14 AAP – Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist hopes player threats to boycott next month’s Champions Trophy and next year’s World Cup over a sponsorship wrangle can be quickly resolved.

Tom Wald14-Aug-2002PERTH, Aug 14 AAP – Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist hopes player threats to boycott next month’s Champions Trophy and next year’s World Cup over a sponsorship wrangle can be quickly resolved. His comments today came as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) indicated it would send a second-string team to the Champions Trophy if its players didn’t sign International Cricket Council (ICC) agreements for the Sri Lankan tournament.Plans for the two major international one-day tournaments are up in the air after leading players associations, including the Australian Cricketers Association, advised members against signing player agreements for the Champions Trophy starting September 12.The World Cup to be held early next year in South Africa faces a similar problem as the International Cricket Council will not budge on its efforts to protect major sponsors. The stand-off could create a major headache for the sport’s biggest names if players’ personal endorsements conflicted with those of ICC-backed events.Gilchrist, the 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, said it was a delicate situation. But he didn’t think any cricketers truly wanted to boycott such major events and felt a viable solution would be found.”I don’t know the individual status on sponsors, but it is fair to say any cricketer doesn’t like the word boycott in regards to any issue,” he said.”That is something that can hopefully be avoided.”And as I said the administrators are there working through it so I’m sure we will come out with an equitable result.”Though the BCCI is officially falling in line with the ICC, there does seem to be an undercurrent of sympathy for the players according to India’s Hindustan Times. It said Indian players had met this week on tour and decided to continue to defy the BCCI.Former Indian captain Ravi Shastri said the Indian cricketers should protect their interests.”It is high time the players stand up for themselves,” he told the Hindustan Times.”As far as India is concerned it should send an under-19 team to the ICC Cup. That way the first casualty will be the ICC itself.”India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are the only three Test playing nations which don’t have player associations. One of the major grievances over the agreements is they restrict players’ endorsement prospects up until 2007.ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said it was vital to protect against ambush marketing tactics because of the $1 billion worth of rights at stake at ICC events.Speed has said national boards had agreed to certain personal endorsement and sponsorship restrictions for ICC events until 2007.

Rangers linked with Gary Cahill

Rangers have been linked with a move for Gary Cahill recently, and the centre-back could be an excellent addition to Steven Gerrard’s squad at Ibrox.

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, Rangers are keen on signing the 35-year-old defender, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Crystal Palace earlier in the summer.

The report claims that Gerrard is willing to offer Cahill £35,000 per week in order to bring the former Chelsea man to Ibrox this summer, as he perhaps looks to add some Champions League experience to his side ahead of their return to the competition.

Would Cahill be a good signing?

Whilst he is arguably past his peak, Cahill would bring a wealth of experience with him to Ibrox, having amassed 394 appearances in the Premier League during his career, playing for the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Aston Villa, Chelsea and most recently Crystal Palace.

Last season saw the veteran defender make 20 appearances in the English top flight, averaging a 6.57 rating from WhoScored, which suggests that he still has what it takes to play at the top level.

Former Palace manager Roy Hodgson was full of praise for the 35-year-old last season, saying: “First of all, he’s a very, very good defender.

“His position is very good, he’s exceptionally good in the air, he’s a strong challenger for the ball and a very good blocker of the ball. These are the defensive qualities we don’t talk about every day… They’re the qualities that get you the clean sheets.

“He’s also brought us leadership qualities, he’s been very good leadership-wise. He’s the best type of leader; he’s the quiet leader people don’t see from Row Z in the stand. He’s the leader we see in training week to week.”

Therefore, Cahill could add excellent leadership qualities at Rangers both on the pitch and in the dressing room next season, which will be vital if Gerrard’s side are to retain the Premiership title and challenge in cup competitions both domestically and in Europe.

Given that he is available on a free transfer, this would be a very low-risk move for Rangers to make, so sporting director Ross Wilson should definitely look at bringing him to Ibrox.

Time todo reserva no Fla-Flu?

-No início do ano, quando as coisas começaram a acontecer bem, todo mundo sabia o time do Fluminense. Cavalieri, Lucas, Renato Chaves, Henrique, Léo, Orejuela, Douglas, Junior (Sornoza), Scarpa, Wellington Silva e Dourado. Hoje a equipe é outra, houve mudanças. Richarlison entrou.
