Shoaib Malik, the Pakistan captain, has said Kamran Akmal, with his last-over heroics that allowed Pakistan to edge past West Indies in the first ODI, had “snatched a win from the jaws of defeat”.Pakistan were chasing 295 and needed 17 off the last over bowled by Jerome Taylor. Fawad Alam managed a single off the first delivery after which Akmal reduced the pressure by hitting sixes off the next two. The batsmen ran three off the fourth ball before Alam wrapped it up with a single off the penultimate delivery.”Even when I was batting I had the feeling that Akmal is to come and I had full confidence that he can do something extraordinary,” Malik said. Akmal arrived at the crease at the fall of Malik’s wicket with Pakistan needing 33 to win off 17 balls.Chris Gayle, the West Indies captain, said Taylor’s final over was where the match turned around. “We made 294 so there were no complaints, then they batted well until the end and it didn’t just come good for Taylor in the last over,” Gayle said. The teams meet for the second ODI on Friday, followed by the third on Sunday.

Fabio Carvalho attracting transfer interest

Fulham attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho is attracting a significant amount of interest ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Mail, who claimed that Real Madrid, as well as a host of top 10 Premier League clubs, are keeping a very close eye on the 19-year-old, whose current deal at Craven Cottage is set to expire at the end of the season.

Further reports have claimed that Barcelona are also interested in the England under-18 international, while Marco Silva is said to be trying to convince the starlet to put pen to paper on a contract extension with the west London club.

Silva would be gutted

Considering the sheer amount of potential Carvalho clearly boasts, in addition to the aforementioned reports that Silva is doing all he can to convince the teenager to sign a new deal at Fulham, the reported interest of Real Madrid would leave the manager gutted if Los Blancos get their man.

Indeed, trying to talk an exciting player into signing a new contract can be challenging at the best of times, let alone when two of the biggest clubs in world football are believed to be keeping tabs on the player in question.

However, it is not difficult to see why Carvalho is so in-demand – over his five Championship appearances so far this season, the £225k-rated starlet has scored three goals, provided one assist and created two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 2.4 shots and making a highly impressive 2.2 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the man who Silva dubbed a “fantastic” player average a remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.30, ranking him as the club’s fifth-best player in the league.

As such, it is abundantly clear as to why the 44-year-old Fulham boss is so desperate to keep Carvalho at the club beyond the end of his current contract, and why the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona are thought to be keen on a move for the youngster.

However, we must admit that Fulham’s position regarding the attacking midfielder does not appear to be the strongest in the world, so it would be wise for the Craven Cottage faithful to make the most of seeing the £650-per-week starlet in action for their club while they still have the chance.

Brilliant Duminy caps stunning revival with 166

JP Duminy’s outstanding 166 ensured South Africa ended the third day of the second Test with a 61-run advantage

The Bulletin by Peter English28-Dec-2008Australia 394 & 0 for 4 trail South Africa 459 (Duminy 166, Steyn 76, Smith 62, Siddle 4-81) by 61 runs

How they were out

JP Duminy’s outstanding maiden century provided more evidence for South African claims they are the best side in the world on a day when Australia flopped, fumbled and allowed a stunning recovery that almost certainly ended their chances of winning the series. While the hosts were lifeless, the visitors were inspired by Duminy’s fresh 166 in his second Test and Dale Steyn and Paul Harris followed in exceptional and irritating stands that stole the game from Australia.South Africa started the morning 196 behind with only three wickets – and a wobbly tail – remaining and wanted a miracle to avoid a large deficit in reply to Australia’s 394. It came through Duminy and his bowlers as they controlled an under-manned attack and posted a magnificent 459. Even a year ago this sort of charity would have been unthinkable, but the Australians had another long day in the field to consider their revised position in the world order.Ricky Ponting was missing Brett Lee, who had a sore left foot, but given the way he has bowled during the series it was not as costly as it would have been six months earlier. Most of their pain came from Duminy, but he was joined by the No. 10 Steyn, who gathered an unlikely 76 in a performance that exposed the young attack and rallied South Africa to the point where when they were finally dismissed they owned a 65-run lead.A day earlier there was the threat of the follow-on, but at stumps they were in charge. Australia survived three overs and picked up four runs, while Matthew Hayden gained a bruise on his chest from Makhaya Ntini. In a courageous partnership of 180, the third-highest ninth-wicket stand in history, Duminy stayed cool and Steyn battled through the pain of a stinging blow on each hand to frustrate the home side and delight their own. Duminy, 24, continued his amazing start after being a key component in the record-breaking chase in Perth last Sunday.Duminy looked as nerveless as a veteran such as Graeme Smith or Jacques Kallis while he carefully added to his collection and continued his rapid development. A couple of pull shots went for four off Nathan Hauritz, but it was not really a day for flourishes, and he nudged and scampered towards three figures. He spent half an hour in the 90s – not that the time mattered – and there was relief when he cut Peter Siddle through gully for four, raised both arms and kissed his helmet badge. His team-mates lined up to cheer as they wondered at the effort that gone into the recovery. Duminy appeared fresh despite staying throughout the day, facing 340 balls and hitting 18 fours, including fine cover drives from Siddle and Mitchell Johnson after his century. A sweep to Hauritz (3 for 98) lobbed to Siddle to extinguish the excellence and Duminy left the ground with people lining up to congratulate him.Steyn, who could have retired hurt after being struck on the left hand by Johnson, continued to expand on his personal best. His peak came when he hit Johnson for two straight drives for four and mirrored the shot off Siddle to bring up his half-century. His memorable innings, which ended when bowled by Siddle, took 191 balls and included nine fours and the six off Hauritz. Not only did South Africa add 261 runs on the third day, but they took significant time away from Ponting’s team, which needs a victory to level the three-match contest. Ponting is unlikely to be generous with a target following South Africa’s pursuit of 414 at the WACA, although he might be left with no option with only six sessions remaining. However, these scenarios rely on Australia’s under-pressure order performing strongly. If the batsmen copy the effort in the field South Africa will own the series by Tuesday. The same attack that was so potent on day two was able to manage only one wicket – the No. 9 Harris – in the first four hours. It was Michael Hussey, the most casual of part-timers, who broke through the 67-run stand that started the revival, with Johnson taking a fine running catch when Harris (39) heaved to deep mid-on.There were misfields, penalty runs for hitting an unused helmet, overthrows and missed catches, including Ponting dropping Steyn on 32. Poor Hussey could not get within two metres of a Steyn shot that went straight up and followed the path of the sun, and Hauritz spilt a caught-and-bowled.Siddle finished with 4 for 81, taking a day between his third and fourth wickets, while Johnson was used heavily in gaining 2 for 127 in 39 overs. The inexperienced men tried but were ineffective in dealing with a side that is more talented and committed than its hosts.

Má fase da Chape? Lateral do Flu pede atenção redobrada no duelo

Polster’s value soared after Rangers exit

Buying and selling players in football always comes with a risk attached to it. What if they struggle to adapt or they go on to greater things after leaving? There are always concerns but that comes with the territory of the transfer window and Rangers are no strangers to that.

One player who the Gers brought in before selling on at a later date was American holding midfielder Matt Polster.

Polster joined Rangers on a free transfer from Chicago Fire but failed to make his mark in Scotland. He ended up playing 10 senior matches for the club before his departure, six of which came in the Scottish Premiership – failing to score a goal and providing one assist. SofaScore rated four of his appearances in the 2019/20 campaign, with Polster achieving a score of 7.0 or higher in three of his four matches.

He then joined MLS side New England Revolution for a fee of £297k in the summer of 2020. So, how has he fared since departing from Ibrox?

In 2021, he has played 23 games in the MLS and averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.03. He has averaged 3.2 tackles and interceptions per game for Revolution and won 59% of his duels, showing defensive steel in the middle of the park.

This has seen his market value on Transfermarkt soar to £900k. This is a 203% increase on the fee Rangers sold him to Revolution for and the highest his value has been in his career – with his market valuation rising steadily ever since he joined the MLS side.

At the age of 28, it could continue to rise as he plays out his peak years as a footballer, with his experience and growth helping him to develop his game and improve his performances. This does beg the question ‘why Rangers did not give him more time?’

His quality performances in the MLS and his soaring market value suggest that Rangers may have sold him at the wrong time and that he deserved more of a chance to show what he could do. It can take time to adapt to a new league and he was only given six attempts to crack the Scottish Premiership.

Perhaps he could have fulfilled his potential if Steven Gerrard gave him a few more opportunities to showcase his qualities, although that is all hypothetical now. We will never know how it would have gone, with Polster now making the most of his chance in the MLS.
