How will UP stop Tendulkar?

The Ranji Trophy final battle promises to be interesting, says Sriram Veera

The Preview by Sriram Veera in Hyderabad11-Jan-2009
An in-form Wasim Jaffer and the presence of Sachin Tendulkar are just two daunting factors UP have to contend with © Cricinfo Ltd.
Mohammad Kaif had just finished addressing the press when he exclaimed in jest, “, no one asked me about my plan for Sachin! I had prepared the answer so well”. After the laughter subsided he went on, “Australia, Africa, Pakistan all have made plans and this man keeps scoring hundreds, what can we do extra special?” Indeed. To state the obvious, Sachin Tendulkar’s shadow threatens to engulf the Ranji Trophy final. That a big ton from the little big man could bring Mumbai their 38th Ranji title is almost considered a given. The last time he played in a Ranji final, two years back, he hit a hundred and Mumbai won. Who will stop him? The pitch offers hope.It sports a greenish tinge and the curator promises not to shave off the grass before adding the cliché of “a sporting wicket”. Uttar Pradesh’s hopes rest on that. If it turns out to be a batting paradise, Mumbai’s strong batting line-up that includes Wasim Jaffer, the prolific Ajinkya Rahane – both of whom have crossed 1,000 runs this season – and Rohit Sharma apart from can be expected to score more runs than UP. Ashish Winston Zaidi, the former domestic bowler and now UP’s manager, is pinning his hope on the pitch.”It looks like it would help the seamers initially before getting slow,” he said. “The curators have said they won’t remove the grass. Our bowlers, like Praveen Kumar and RP Singh, will be the key.” However, in India, grass on a pitch doesn’t necessarily translate to seam movement. Dead grass is usually rolled and what little left is cut on the morning of the game. Kaif knows it only too well. “This [talk of sporting tracks] has been said for a while now but the pitches have been dead and have not helped spinners as well. What we need are sporting wickets that help the spinners as the game goes on.”Throughout this season, unlike the previous few years, UP have rode on their batting to get the first-innings lead to move ahead in the tournament. Tanmay Srivastava has got the most runs (654 at 54.50) with Kaif, Suresh Raina, and Shivakant Shukla pitching in with vital contributions. UP have just one outright win largely because the bowlers haven’t fired on unresponsive pitches. It is not as if Mumbai, unbeaten this season, will lose any sleep if the pitch plays sporting. They have one of the world’s best seam bowlers in Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar and the useful Dhawal Kulkarni and would expect their batsmen to handle anything that UP throws at them. The other question is will Mumbai get complacent with the presence of heavyweights? Jaffer asserts they won’t be and revealed that Tendulkar addressed the team strongly on the same issue.”We were a bit flat and complacent on the third day of the semi-final against Saurashtra and Sachin spoke to the team, warning us about complacency. We are all keyed up for this final,” he said. “UP have a bunch of match winners and they have beaten us in the recent past. We know that they can do it again. We can’t relax just because Sachin and Zaheer are in the team.”Mumbai haven’t yet determined a final XI, though they have retained the same 12 from the semi-final. It could be a three-way contest for two spots between Amol Muzumdar, 31 runs short of becoming the highest Ranji run-scorer but struggling this season, Sairaj Bahutule, who hasn’t been very successful with his legspin, and Abhishek Nayar, the promising allrounder. UP have more or less decided on their composition. A fit RP Singh is set to replace Imityaz Ahmed. Both teams had a vigorous nets session today. All eyes were on Tendulkar, who as ever, didn’t face any bowlers on the day before the match. Instead, he faced some throw downs and concentrated on his back-foot play. Time and again, he asked the bowlers to throw shorter for the “cut shot” and practiced quite plenty punchy on-the-up drives. One can only guess whether it gives any indication of what he thinks the pitch will do.The battle promises to be interesting. UP, the Pakistan of domestic cricket, thrive on passion and instinct while there is more method in Mumbai’s approach. “We don’t have the infrastructure or the history that Mumbai have,” said Kaif. “We have the passion and the confidence that we can do it. I feel very proud that despite the lack of resources, we have reached the final three times in the last four years. We will give it our all. Let’s see what happens.”Let’s indeed see.

Predicted Spurs XI v Rennes - team, injury news

Nuno Santo faces several dilemmas as Tottenham Hotspur begin their UEFA Europa Conference League group stage campaign with a trip to France to face Stade Rennes.

The Portuguese head coach must balance the need to bounce back from Saturday’s surprise defeat to Crystal Palace with the need to get off to a good start in a competition they are among the favourites to win, also knowing that they face local rivals Chelsea this weekend.

With plenty of his first-team squad on the treatment table or unavailable, Nuno’s options are threadbare as it is.

Here’s how we think Spurs could line up at Roazhon Park later this evening…

Nuno will be without Eric Dier, who has not travelled to France due to injury, or Davinson Sanchez and Cristian Romero, who are still stuck in Croatia following the international break, so it seems likely that young duo Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga will pair up, with the latter looking to make amends for this red card against the Eagles.

Either side of them could be further changes as Ben Davies and Matt Doherty come in for Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal, respectively. They’ll all be in front of backup goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, who takes the place of club captain Hugo Lloris.

Perhaps the biggest decision facing the Spurs boss is what to do with his midfield as his trio on Saturday struggled to have much of an influence whatsoever.

Tanguy Ndombele is yet to feature this season and could be called upon to offer something different – and much-needed – in the attack. It would be a massive call to make considering he wanted to leave during the summer transfer window, as per the Telegraph.

He could be joined by summer signing Bryan Gil in attacking midfield as the pair look to add creativity to Nuno’s lineup, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg playing slightly deeper in the engine room.

Without Heung-min Son, it’s likely we see Steven Bergwijn make a reappearance on the wing, having missed the trip to Selhurst Park, whilst Lucas Moura could be preferred on the other flank.

Harry Kane is expected to lead the line, particularly without the services of his lethal South Korean partner. Although, 17-year-old gem Dane Scarlett may come off the bench at some stage.

In total, there could be as many as seven changes for the trip to Rennes.

Predicted Spurs XI (4-2-3-1): Gollini; Davies, Rodon, Tanganga, Doherty; Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Gil, Bergwijn, Moura; Kane.

Everton: Iwobi was a disaster vs QPR

When Rafa Benitez was announced as the new manager of Everton Football Club, it was apparent that he’d need a quickfire start devoid of controversy.

News of his appointment had not gone down well with Toffees supporters due to his allegiances to the red side of Merseyside but fortunately, Benitez was able to prevent negativity and prove them wrong.

Everton started the season in flying fashion and after the opening four matches of the season, they were level on points with the league leaders.

Yet, proceedings have gone downhill since. They have lost Dominic Calvert-Levin, Richarlison, Seamus Coleman and Jordan Pickford to injury.

They were swatted aside with ease by Aston Villa last weekend and now they are out of the Carabao Cup too.

The Goodison Park outfit had a genuine chance of winning this competition but they went out in the worst way possible; on penalties.

As expected, Benitez fielded a team that combined youth and experience, but unfortunately, it was his senior heads that let him down the most against QPR.

Twice the Rs took the lead but Everton fought back before losing on penalties.

One of the worst displays came from £100k-per-week Alex Iwobi. The winger has done little to justify his £34m price tag since arriving from Arsenal with just five goals to his name at Everton.

He wasn’t involved in any of the goals against QPR as he turned in a languid display.

With Demarai Gray not starting and Richarlison ruled out, this was an ideal opportunity for the Nigerian to prove his worth, especially against Championship opposition.

However, he flopped for Benitez in a performance that severely let the manager down.

During his 90 minutes on the field, Iwobi completed two dribbles and also provided two key passes but typically, his end product was ultimately lacking.

His pass success rate of 75% was extremely disappointing while the winger was also feeble in physical situations.

Iwobi won just 22.2% of the defensive duels he was involved in, winning only two all night. In surrendering possession 13 times, he also lost the ball every 3.1 touches.

Against a team in the second-tier, the former Arsenal gem should have been running rampant. Sadly, he never looked like threatening their backline.

Andy Robertson was great against Porto

Liverpool made it two wins from two in Group B on the Champions League, thrashing Porto 5-1 at the Estadio do Dragao on Tuesday evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges were back to their scintillating best against the Portuguese giants and raced into an early lead through Mohamed Salah after he tapped in a parried Curtis Jones effort.

Sadio Mane doubled Liverpool’s lead on the stroke of halftime before Salah got his second on the hour mark, putting the game to bed.

Mehdi Taremi’s header briefly gave the hosts a glimmer of hope but substitute Roberto Firmino added the fourth and fifth goals during an eye-catching display for the Reds.

Despite the standout performances of the forward line, it was arguably one of the Anfield outfit’s back four who had the most pleasing showing.

Left-back Andy Robertson was back to his best against Porto following a difficult start to the season, something that will have perhaps satisfied Klopp as much as the scoreline given his importance to the side.

The Scotland international continuously burst down the flanks, making overlapping and underlapping runs on either side of Mane and was almost rewarded for his efforts after 25 minutes, teeing up Diogo Jota, but the striker couldn’t apply the finishing touches.

Robertson then almost got himself on the scoresheet at the start of the second half after firing the ball across goal following Mane’s pass, although his effort was well saved by goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

He continued to terrorise the Porto right side for the rest of the evening, and his underlying numbers are further evidence of a satisfying night’s work for the tireless 27-year-old.

As per SofaScore, Robertson had a whopping 100 touches during the 90 minutes, achieved a passing accuracy of 89%, created one big chance and also made three key passes, highlighting his attacking efficiency with the ball at his feet.

However, the former Hull City ace was also just as impressive in a defensive capacity. He made three tackles, two interceptions and one clearance against Porto, capping off a magnificent night at both ends of the pitch.

Klopp will be hoping for more of the same from Robertson in the weeks to come, with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City next up for the Merseysiders.

And, in other news…Forget Salah: Liverpool maestro who won seven duels was Klopp’s real hero v Porto
