Com 29 pontos, o time é o quarto colocado do Campeonato Brasileiro.

West Ham to revisit interest in "diamond"

West Ham remain interested in Sam Johnstone, according to reports…

What’s the word?

The Irons were originally linked with a move for the West Brom goalkeeper during the summer transfer window, when Football Insider claimed that the 28-year-old was a firm target for David Moyes and he was “very keen” to join the east Londoners.

With his contract set to expire in the summer, the Scotsman could well plot to sign him once again.

“WBA and England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is targeted by Tottenham. Southampton and West Ham are the other interested teams with the young keeper,” claimed verified Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur.

He added: “Johnstone will be free to negotiate with those clubs in January. His West Bromwich contract will expire at the end of this season.”

Bye-bye Fabianski?

The Hammers brought in Alphonse Areola on loan from Paris Saint-Germain instead of signing the England international, so this renewed interest could mean one of two things.

Either Moyes is not convinced by the 6 foot 5 loanee or he wants to replace the likes of Lukasz Fabianski, Darren Randolph and Dave Martin, all of whom are the wrong side of 30.

The latter scenario seems more likely and a goalkeeping department of Areola and Johnstone would be very competitive and something you’d expect from a Premier League side vying for a European spot.

West Ham’s new head of recruitment Rob Newman could seal a bargain in the Baggies shot-stopper, especially if he secures him for nothing.

Despite being relegated last season, Johnstone made Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020, though that should come as little surprise as he was one of the more impressive options between the sticks. No goalkeeper made more saves (161) than the 6 foot 4 glovesman in the 2020/21 Premier League, as per FBRef.

Former Villa boss Steve Bruce lauded him as a “diamond” for his work ethic on the training pitch. “He’s a diamond – first in, last out. He’s a typical goalkeeper who wants to learn,” the 60-year-old said, via BirminghamLive.

The £7.2m-rated star is only thought to be earning around £32.5k-per-week at The Hawthorns, which further suggests that it would be an absolute steal to secure him, especially ahead of Spurs and the Saints.

Newman and co must look to replace Fabianski with Johnstone in 2022.

Injured Warne likely to miss Mumbai game

Rajasthan Royals’ bid to enter the semi-finals has been dealt a big blow with skipper Shane Warne suffering a hamstring injury during this crucial phase of the tournament

Shane Warne is almost certain to miss Rajasthan Royal’s next match, against Mumbai Indians in Durban on Thursday•Associated Press

Shane Warne, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, is likely to miss his team’s next match, against Mumbai Indians on Thursday, due a hamstring injury he suffered during Monday’s game against Deccan Chargers.Darren Berry, the Rajasthan coach, confirmed the injury but wasn’t sure how many games Warne would miss. “He slightly stretched his hamstring in the field yesterday and we are waiting for the diagnosis today,” he told Cricinfo. “It is only minor. At this stage we think he may miss one match but we are hoping that’s the only game he misses. That’s still to be determined and when the physio treats him today we’ll have a better indication.”If he has miraculous treatment in the next three days we will have him for the Mumbai Indians game but we don’t know that yet.”A statement from the team management on Tuesday said Warne was currently working with the team doctor and more information would be available in the next 24 hours.Graeme Smith, who is the senior-most player in the side after Warne and has led South Africa for six years, is likely to replace him as captain. “The logical choice is Graeme Smith, given that he is an international captain,” Berry said.Warne has been Rajasthan’s leading wicket-taker with 11 from 10 matches at 26.27. The team is currently placed fourth on the points table, having played one more game than their nearest rivals, Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians, who play each other today.Looking ahead to the rest of the tournament, Berry said the batsmen would have to step up if the team is to repeat the success from last season. “The main concern is we haven’t been able to find consistent form with the bat,” Berry said. “Our batting has very been spasmodic apart from Smith and [Naman] Ojha’s fantastic 100-run partnership which set up the win against Punjab.””We may have to win three out of three depending on how the other results go. It is in our hands now. One thing I’ve recognised about this team is that we have done well in pressure matches. We can’t have another game like last night’s performance against Deccan Chargers. The boys were all disappointed, so we made a commitment after the game that we will focus on game by game again. We are back in Durban where we did well in our last game there. Jeremy Snape, the team psychologist, and myself are working with the boys to get their confidence back and lead them towards the semi-finals.”Berry admitted that the team had been considerably weakened by the absence of Shane Watson, who has a groin injury and has been asked to rest by Cricket Australia before the World Twenty20, and Sohail Tanvir. “We had made our plans involving Watson so it was a significant blow to those plans and team make-up. I wasn’t surprised by Cricket Australia’s decision as I didn’t think for one minute they were going to let him come with the groin injury with the Twenty20 World Cup coming up it. But without him and Sohail Tanvir, the bowler of the IPL last year, we have actually done really well to be still there in the competition even if we have been inconsistent.”The team’s problems have been further compounded by the loss of two of their fast bowlers – Kamran Khan and Amit Singh – because of suspect actions. “Actually, Kamran hurt his knee, which has put him out for six weeks,” Berry said. “Yes, his action was questioned and we are seeking some assistance on the matter. He was not reported. The technical committee wanted to have a close look at his action.”With Amit Singh it has been identified that his slower ball is under question. A professional biomechanist and former South African bowling coach Vincent Barnes are working on Amit.”

Robin Koch could return soon for Leeds

Leeds United centre-back Robin Koch has reportedly undergone successful surgery on a hip injury and is hopeful of returning to action ‘soon’.

The Lowdown: Koch missing for a while

The 25-year-old has been missing since the 5-1 defeat at Manchester United on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Koch limped out of proceedings with a hip problem, and given the severity of the issue, surgery was required in the United States.

The Latest: Positive update emerges

According to Bild [via Sport Witness], the surgery has been a success and the German is now focusing on being back in the Leeds fold as soon as possible.

Koch will return to the club next week and it is claimed that he could be back on the pitch in the ‘coming weeks’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-20/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Much-needed boost

There isn’t much positive injury news to report for the Whites currently – the likes of Luke Ayling, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford are all out, among others – so this is a welcome boost.

Granted, Koch may not necessarily be a guaranteed starter when fit, but he provides competition for places and is capable of thriving in both defence and midfield, being hailed as ‘magnificent’ by Noel Whelan in the past.

Indeed, with Bielsa’s squad ravaged by absences at the moment, any positive update on the injury front is a most welcome one, not least in defence.

Acabou a espera.

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse linked with Newcastle transfer

After picking up a red card and a three-game ban during their 3-1 Premier League defeat against Chelsea earlier this month, Southampton will welcome their club captain James Ward-Prowse back this weekend for their match against Watford after completing his ban.

However, it seems as though the club could potentially lose their star midfielder on a permanent basis during the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by Football Insider that Ward-Prowse is apparently a “firm target” for fellow Premier League side Newcastle United and their new owners in January to try and strengthen their midfield, given their poor start to the season.

After working his way through Southampton’s youth academy, Ward-Prowse has gone on to make 331 appearances for the Saints across all competitions, scoring 35 goals and providing 42 assists along the way, which is why we feel the Southampton fans would be concerned by the possibility of him leaving in January to Newcastle.

In addition to this, Ward-Prowse had played 90 minutes of all of Southampton’s Premier League games so far this season prior to him getting sent off against Chelsea, proving himself to be a vital cog in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Back in the previous summer transfer window, the 26-year-old, who is currently valued at £28.8m according to Transfermarkt, was heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa, who reportedly put in an offer of £25m which was apparently rejected by Southampton.

After that, Ward-Prowse put pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Southampton, securing his long-term future at St. Mary’s and putting to bed any rumours of him leaving the club.

Taking this into account, Ward-Prowse isn’t likely to leave the club in January for a move to Newcastle given how he said that he is “not finished” at Southampton and still has “a lot left to give” to the club when he signed his latest deal.

Moving forward, even if Newcastle come in with a big offer for the Englishman, they would need a lot more than the financial aspect of things to get Ward-Prowse to leave his boyhood club that he clearly loves playing for.

England women warm up in style

News from the warm-up matches for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20

Cricinfo staff08-Jun-2009England reaffirmed their status as favourites for the inaugural Women’s World Twenty20 with a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in their first official warm-up match. England won the toss, bowled first, and restricted New Zealand to 122 for 8, before cruising to victory with seven balls remaining. Charlotte Edwards led the chase with 55 not out from 44 balls, “It’s a good start,” she said afterwards. “We are in our own conditions and we have been playing a lot recently, so we’re in good form as a team. It was a good outing for us and I’m pleased we got the result.”Susan Benade and Mignon du Preez overcame the loss of two early wickets to put South Africa on course for a comfortable 26-run victory over Sri Lanka at Taunton Vale. The pair added 92 for the third wicket after Trisha Chetty and Cri-zelda Brits had fallen with nine runs on the board. Benade became Sripali Weerakkody’s second wicket when she was bowled for 47, but Du Preez went on to top-score with 51 from 52 balls. Their total of 118 for 3 proved too daunting for Sri Lanka, who lost both openers to run-outs before drifting to 92 for 8 in their 20 overs.Deandra Dottin powered West Indies to a comprehensive 26-run victory over Pakistan in a rain-reduced 14-over contest at King’s College. Dottin displayed extraordinary power in whacking 37 not out from 14 balls, with five fours and a six, and West Indies’ total of 114 for 4 was an impressive effort. In reply, Pakistan stuttered to 88 for 6, with their innings only receiving belated momentum when Javeria Khan made 35 not out from 27 balls. Anisa Mohammed, with 2 for 17 in three overs, was the pick of the attack. There was no play possible in the final match of the day, between Australia and India at Taunton
