Australia were the last team to enter the ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals but they got there after surviving a scare against Pakistan that had Ricky Ponting chewing his fingernails on the dressing-room balcony. Chasing Pakistan’s total of 205, Australia were cruising at 140 for 2. However, they lost six wickets for 47 runs and Brett Lee and Nathan Hauritz ended up scrambling a last-ball bye to scrape a two-wicket victory in Centurion.”I was chewing my fingers nails up there for the last little bit,” Ponting said after the game. “That ended up being closer than I thought was possible. We snuck across the line.”The result left Australia on top of Group A with five points, compared to Pakistan’s four, which means they’ll face England, the second-placed team in Group B, in the first semi-final in Centurion on Friday. Australia came to South Africa having won a bilateral one-day series 6-1 in England but despite that success Ponting was wary of a resurgent England team.”We’ve just come from a really good series against them over there, but it’s different conditions here to what we confronted over there and they’ve been playing some pretty good cricket of late,” Ponting said. “We need to get back to the drawing board a little bit and talk about what went wrong in the last part with our batting this afternoon and make sure we don’t do that again on Friday.”As the ball got older it reversed a bit at the end and spun a bit for the spinners too so we were pretty lucky we restricted them to that total. I thought the bowlers in the second half of the innings particularly, did a good job.”Pakistan will face Group B leaders New Zealand in the other semi-final in Johannesburg on Saturday. They will be gunning for their second ICC title this year after winning the World Twenty20 in England in June. “I’m always happy whether you play England, Australia or any team in semi-finals or final it doesn’t matter,” Younis Khan said. “If you play good cricket then you are the winner.”

ExWHUemployee drops worrying injury update

ExWHUemployee has dropped a worrying injury update regarding West Ham United centre-back Kurt Zouma.

What’s the latest?

In a recent post on The West Ham Way, the club insider revealed that, following an injury sustained during Saturday’s 3-2 win over Chelsea, the centre-back will have a scan on Monday to determine the extent of the damage to his knee.

ExWHUemployee continued to state that the defender “felt something pop” – something which is often associated with a torn ligament – before going on to suggest that, should the France international’s injury be a long-term one, a January move for a centre-back will be “even more important.”

Speaking about the 27-year-old’s injury, the Hammers insider said:

Fans will be devastated

Considering how impressive Zouma has been since making a £29.8m move to West Ham this summer, should the defender indeed have torn a ligament in his knee – something which could potentially be season-ending – fans of the club would undoubtedly be devastated.

Indeed, over his 11 Premier League appearances this season, the £28.8m-rated centre-back has helped his side keep two clean sheets and has scored one goal – which just so happened to be the winner against Liverpool – as well as making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 0.6 tackles, 5.2 clearances and winning 60% of his duels per game.

These returns have seen the £120k-per-week man average a SofaScore match rating of 6.91, ranking him as David Moyes’ 10th-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, losing the defender for an extended period of time would undoubtedly come as a major blow to West Ham’s chances of securing a top-four finish this season, and would more than likely result in the Hammers having to once again dip into the transfer market for a new option in the position come January – as ExWHUemployee suggests.

Lucas Lima questiona: 'Se o Santos não me quiser, fico desempregado?'

– O Santos é a minha casa, estou feliz. Deixo a porta aberta.

All-round Afridi leads rout

Shahid Afridi first resuscitated Pakistan from a disastrous start with the bat and nearly took a hat-trick as they romped home to a 138-run win against New Zealand

How they were out
Shahid Afridi had to have the final word and nearly puled off a hat-trick•Associated Press

Who needs the captaincy when you are in this kind of form? Shahid Afridi’s supposed desire to lead Pakistan in ODIs and his rift with captain Younis Khan has dominated the chat in Pakistan since the Champions Trophy, and his all-round performance tonight to dismantle New Zealand – along with the captain’s duck – will do nothing to quell further talk. But why burden yourself with leadership hassles when you can turn in the kind of man-mountain performance Afridi did, first resuscitating Pakistan from a disastrous start with the bat and then nearly taking a hat-trick as his side romped home to a 138-run win at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.Afridi’s day had begun halfway through Pakistan’s innings, when having won the toss, they were making a mess of things. Shane Bond had bowled an opening five-over spell of refreshingly attacking intent, of real cunning, occasional pace and much guile. Each ball he bowled, it seemed, was geared only to take wickets, not save runs. With the rest of Bond’s colleagues chipping in, Afridi turned up to find his side limping around at 75 for 4.Much like a magician he turned it into an ominous 287 for 9 with his innings opening up the floodgates for his lower order, in particular Kamran Akmal, who plundered New Zealand relentlessly at the death. In all, 137 runs came in the last 15 overs and 206 off the last 25, and Afridi was the culprit. It was a calm hand by his standards, pretty brutal by any other, and the kind of innings Twenty20 has brought out of him. In its entirety it was mature, particularly in the realisation that he need not go at it helter-skelter from the off and that if his forearms are somehow aligned to his brain then mountains can be moved.Indeed there was nary a miscue or hoick to begin, just urgent nudges and grunted pushes to revive Pakistan’s comatose run-rate. Once Khalid Latif, drafted in as opener, pulled a first boundary for nearly 12 overs in the 29th, he freed Afridi’s mind. Soon Afridi was dancing out to hoist three sixes in two overs of spin from Daniel Vettori and Nathan McCullum. The flurry of boundaries is an Afridi trait, but once out of the way he reverted – pleasingly – to taking well-placed singles and doubles, managing the occasional boundary. Shane Bond was muscled over long-off for one such, to bring up his fifty off 37 balls, which was still sedate for him. He went soon after biffing a couple more, but not before, with a tranquil Latif, having revived Pakistan. Latif looked as threatening as a butterfly, without being as pretty, but he stuck around for what was a valuable fifty. And he was at his most effective when Afridi was going for it, simply because he ensured that Afridi got much of the strike.Akmal, relieved of opening and for Afridi’s ballast, gleefully looted runs over the death, putting on 86 with Abdul Razzaq in just over seven overs – driving, scything and squeezing a parade of sixes and fours en route to a stunning 43-ball 67.The momentum with them, Pakistan’s pacemen worked their way through the top order, crippling the chase at the very off. Umar Gul may have been the main beneficiary in terms of wickets, but Mohammad Aamer’s opening spell – much older than the 17-year-old body and mind that produced it – was the key. At whippy pace, he gnawed away at both Brendon McCullum and Aaron Redmond over after over, regularly beating them for pace and inward movement and ultimately setting the tone of who was to boss the chase.Inevitably, though, Afridi had to have the final word. Daniel Vettori and Redmond had gamely kept New Zealand within a sniff, though Redmond’s ponderous fifty – unlike Latif’s earlier – did not have anyone going crazy enough around it. After an indifferent, hurried first spell, Afridi got the pesky Vettori to drag on an attempted sweep, and with his next ball trapped Nathan McCullum. Another umpire might have even given the hat-trick – incorrect as it may have been – but denying Afridi in this kind of mood took some standing. New Zealand found it beyond them.

Jamal Lewis could save Newcastle millions

Eddie Howe ended his wait for a first win in charge of Newcastle United as they beat Burnley 1-0 at St. James’ Park over the weekend.

The ex-Bournemouth boss has slowly been making a difference since his move to Tyneside and he has picked up five points in four games so far, with draws against Norwich and Brentford sandwiching a defeat to Arsenal prior to the win against the Clarets.

Save millions

One change Howe has made in recent weeks that could end up saving PIF millions in the transfer is bringing Jamal Lewis back into the fold at left-back.

Matt Ritchie’s suspension for the clash with Norwich offered an opportunity for Lewis to start his first game of the Premier League season.

He put in a tireless shift to help earn the Magpies a point in that game before being handed a starting berth again for the match against Burnley, with Newcastle winning their first league game of the campaign to move off the bottom of the table. During that performance, he typified why Darren Bent once described him as a “dark horse.”

In the draw with the Canaries, Lewis made two clearances, one block, one tackle and one interception whilst managing to avoid being dribbled past once – per SofaScore. He then stepped up his game further against Sean Dyche’s team, with four clearances, one block, one interception and four tackles without being dribbled past.

This shows that he has been able to come back into the team and immediately make a positive impression, helping the team to four points in two games with two solid displays. It highlights his mental fortitude and ability to step straight in and perform despite so long on the sidelines.

To that point, Former Norwich boss Daniel Farke previously hailed the defender’s mental strength after winning his place back at Carrow Road. He said:

“This was the first time he had this experience. He had to fight for his position and find this mental strength to not be too disappointed, or to doubt yourself. He had to stay mentally strong and to live another week and another week and another week. He had to show this feeling that I want to be professional, to prepare my mind and my body for this situation.

“To have this experience will definitely help him in his career, and I think that’s one of the reasons why I really trust him that he comes back even stronger than before. Jamal is no different to any other player, in the sense they want to play each and every game, but in the mid and long term he might look back on this period as a crucial one to reach the next step in his career. I think he learned a lot during this time.”

But that isn’t the only area the defender thrives in with his attacking play once being applauded by the former Norwich boss who said after a goal that Lewis had “some magic” in his feet.

If the youngster can continue to catch the eye and impress in the Premier League then it could prevent any need for PIF to splash the cash on a new left-back, having been linked to AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez earlier this year.

They could save millions in the transfer market by playing the £10.8m-rated beast week-in-week-out, with Howe’s decision to bring him back into the picture potentially a lucrative one for the club.

AND in other news, Howe could find ASM 2.0 for NUFC in £45m-rated beast who’s “better than Kylian Mbappe”…
