Does Johnston have a future at Celtic?

The career of Mikey Johnston has flattered to deceive on many an occasion at Celtic with several Hoops managers now failing to get the best from him at Parkhead.

Whether that is down to the coaching, the player, or positional rivals is very much a cause for debate.

This term, the 22-year-old has had to compete with the likes of Jota, Liel Abada and even Kyogo Furuhashi on the flanks meaning game time has been severely limited.

However, he has very rarely grabbed his opportunity with both hands. After Jota was ruled out through injury, Ange Postecoglou challenged the young Scot to grab the bull by the horns.

“Ultimately, we need guys like Mikey and Liel (Abada) to step up, that’s why they’re here at the club.

“And if the opportunity exists for them it’s up to them to take it,” the Australian said.

However, just as a chance presents itself, Johnston is out injured again. He missed the club’s last gasp win over Ross County last night and after that, there should really be no way back for the Celtic man in Glasgow.

In the words of Frank McAvennie, this is a problem that’s been going on “for years now.”

He told Football Insider this week: “He’s barely getting a game and when he does play he is really struggling.

“Sell him. I would like to see him moved on for the benefit of his own career. Ange gave him a chance with Jota out and he’s not done anything.

“Some fans might disagree but he’s simply not good enough for what Ange is trying to build.”

It’s hard to disagree with those sentiments. Johnston has scored just 11 times in his Hoops career and is yet to find the net for Postecoglou this term.

In the process of amassing that disappointing number, the attacker has spent over 557 days on the treatment table and has missed around 68 fixtures.

He may only earn a weekly salary of £7.9k-per-week but that money is surely better spent on someone of greater quality or even a player who doesn’t take up so much time with the physios.

It seems harsh but ultimately, the winger has not delivered on the pitch with his performances or with his fitness.

After breaking on the scene in 2018, divisive figure Chris Sutton tweeted the following: “Is Mikey Johnston the new Ryan Christie? Celtic’s fringe players at the start of the season coming to the fore when it counts.”

Sadly, he has not stood up and been counted on too many occasions since and just like Christie, he must seek a new club.

AND in other news, Forget Abada: Celtic gem who won 67% duels proved he’s now someone “Ange can’t ignore”…

Plays of the day from the final day between Australia and West Indies in Adelaide

Windies win in drawn Test
West Indies might not have won the Test, but they certainly won respect. The discipline of their pacemen and the desperation of their fieldsmen on the final day indicated that this was a team brimming with passion and desire; traits that had been evident only intermittently this year. The task from here is to prove that their performance at the Gabba, not the Adelaide Oval, was the anomaly. With their mocko jumbie-cum-spinner, Sulieman Benn, largely ineffective following a blow to the foot the previous day, Dwayne Bravo and Kemar Roach – the latter of whom regularly hit speeds in excess of 150kph – ruthlessly pursued the Australians, while Adrian Barath, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Bravo all claimed catches that would make any highlight reel. A summer slapped with the damp squib tag has unexpectedly come alive.Crisis of confidence I
If one criticism could be made of the tourists, it was Chris Gayle’s decision to bat on for the first half hour of Tuesday. Australia were already faced with a mammoth run chase at the conclusion of day four, and the move of Gayle to take the target well beyond 330 robbed his bowlers of time and Australia’s batsmen of an incentive to push for victory. That it followed a final session on Monday in which the batsmen displayed little in the way of urgency will rankle with those who like their Test cricket with an aggressive edge. Undoubtedly, these were the tactics of a team lacking in confidence – and after the year that’s been, who could blame them? – but they nonetheless denied the fifth day its full complement of drama.Crisis of confidence II
Confidence, or lack thereof, proved a major issue for the Australians, too. Set a would-be ground-record target of 330 runs from 81 overs – an asking rate of just more than four per over – the hosts’ effectively dropped anchor at the fall of just their second wicket and plotted course for a draw. Cocksure Australian teams of the past might have been more inclined to flirt with disaster in pursuit of glory, however this current side, fresh from a humbling Ashes defeat, can ill afford many more setbacks. The retention of the Frank Worrell Trophy, even with a draw, will be viewed as a pleasing result for a team with an increasingly bare mantelpiece.Leg theory – version 2.0
Not all was conservative. With five Australian wickets to claim and time ticking away, Gayle experimented with an array of field settings that won’t be found in the MCC handbook. At one stage, he trialled a configuration that could be best described as forward-of-square leg theory, placing four men between bat-pad and short mid-on with Bravo in operation. It didn’t work, though not for lack of trying.Odds weren’t even
Tracking the bookmakers’ odds on the final day was liable to make punters’ seasick. West Indies blew in and out like the tide as punters fretted over the fall of each Australian wicket. Within seconds of Shane Watson falling to Darren Sammy, odds on a West Indies victory were slashed from $19 to $9, while the dismissal of Michael Hussey six overs later prompted the margins to plummet from $15 to $7.50.

Wolves backed to sign Divock Origi

Journalist Luke Hatfield has backed Wolves to complete the signing of Liverpool striker Divock Origi in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Origi linked with Wolves move

Bruno Lage’s side suffered heartbreak at the hands of Origi earlier this month, with his last-gasp strike at Molineux sealing a 1-0 win for the Reds.

Wolves have been linked with a move for the Belgian in the past and they could be eyeing up potential January additions in attack.

Origi has only played 38 minutes of Premier League action this season, suggesting a move away could benefit him, too.

The Latest: Hatfield talks up signing

Someone who sees the 26-year-old as a strong option is Hatfield, who told Give Me Sport that there is interest in him from Wolves:

“Wolves have been linked with him before, obviously they like the look of him.

“They need someone to back up Raul Jimenez, they have Hwang, who’s a different player, but other than that, who have they got? You’ve got Fabio Silva, who’s a young lad, and we’re yet to see the best of him, so I think a striker option would be interesting.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“375704”]

The Verdict: Ideal January option

Origi may rarely have been a regular for Liverpool but what he has achieved speaks for itself, famously scoring twice in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona in 2018/19, as well as finding the net in the final win over Tottenham.

The Belgium international has been described as a ‘monster’ by Jurgen Klopp, and at 26, he is at a good age for Wolves to snap him up in his prime.

That being said, Liverpool may be hesitant to sell Origi in January, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

A summer move could feel more likely, with the Reds hero providing strong competition for Raul Jimenez – something Fabio Silva isn’t doing, having failed to score or assist in the league so far this season.

In other news, Hatfield has also provided an update on one Wolves player’s future. Find out who it is here.

England get there at last, by one run over India

Sky TV and the Waitangi Day crowds missed out on the game of the World Series of Women’s Cricket as two top innings, by England’s Charlotte Edwards and India’s Mithali Raj produced an stunning finish at Lincoln 3

Matthew Appleby25-Dec-2009Sky TV and the Waitangi Day crowds missed out on the game of the World Series of Women’s Cricket as two top innings, by England’s Charlotte Edwards and India’s Mithali Raj produced an stunning finish at Lincoln 3.In a tournament of few climaxes, India, rather than England, choked, losing the last six wickets for 23 runs, the key moment coming when one of England’s least natural fielders, lanky Lucy Pearson, swooped and threw from short fine leg to run out Raj for 98 off 124 balls.India needed eight off 13 balls as Raj trooped off, then five in the final over, with two wickets left. But Mamta Kanojia ran herself out going for a third and No 11 Jhulan Goswami was unable to score off four deliveries from the ramrod straight Sarah Collyer, getting bowled off a swing at the last ball with two needed to win.England captain Clare Connor was a relieved woman at the close as she headed for a mandatory drug test.”It was a little closer than we would have wanted ideally, but a win’s a win and it’s important psychologically going into the third/fourth place playoff tomorrow, knowing we can beat them.”At 92 for four in the 29th over chasing 209 to win, India looked out of it, but the diminutive Raj blasted boundaries all round the ground to reach 98, leaving her team eight to win off 13 balls.Instead of nudging the singles the Indian tail lost the plot, setting up a real third and fourth playoff for tomorrow. The pitch played true on a cloudless day and the small crowd saw a game that was in the balance throughout.Edwards hit her side’s first half century of the tournament to help England to 208 for four wickets off 50 overs.Edwards, who returned to form with 79 not out after a best of 23 in the series, came in at 66 in the 19th over and hit 10 boundaries in her 92-ball innings.Edwards’ eighth ODI fifty (she also has three centuries) came up with a straight driven four off Hemlata Kala off her 71st ball faced.England hit 62 off the last eight overs, and 81 off the last 12. Its second hundred came in 106 balls, compared to 185 for the first.England stalwart Clare Taylor said the side was lacking assurance. It had not beaten India in 10 games since 1999, and almost threw it away today. But, for the good of the immediate future of England women’s cricket, the team came through.Taylor played a minor part today, but her conviction spread through the team and now England is set to be spirited, at least, on its forthcoming tour of Australia. The team leaves on Monday for Brisbane.”If we come off the back of this tournament with two good wins under our belts (against India) it will lift the girls, especially the batters and make them feel that they can do it.”I think all we’re looking for is belief. The Kiwis have got it and the Aussies have got it in abundance and I think that’s all we’re lacking – we’re not lacking in talent, it’s turning that talent into runs out on the pitch in the big games, rather than just against lesser teams.”Edwards and Arran Thompson (38) had shown that missing confidence to break the field up and set a challenging total. They added 98 for the fourth wicket, England’s highest stand of the series. Raj and Kala compiled a similar stand for India, putting on 92 for the fifth wicket before Laura Newton ran out Kala with 25 needed off six overs.India will rue putting England in on a pitch that has kept true, after an improved England performance (with nothing at stake) compared to last week’s dismal 86 all out in the first fixture between the teams.
