Smith keeps his cool on a hot day for England

Plays of the day for day three of the third Test between South Africa and England at Cape Town

Another quiet start
For the second day running anyone taking their seat a few minutes late would have looked up at the scoreboard and realised they’d missed something. Following Graham Onions’ lead from yesterday Morne Morkel was soon in the action when a well-directed bouncer was fended to first slip by Graeme Swann. Next ball it got better for Morkel as Jimmy Anderson fenced another catch to Graeme Smith to give him his fifth-wicket. Although Matt Prior briefly rallied for England, Morkel’s early blow had set the tone for South Africa’s day.Prince goes for a walk
Daryl Harper is having an interesting match. On the second day he had to change a leg-bye signal to four runs and today he gave an horrendous decision against Ashwell Prince which was swiftly overturned on review. However, in Harper’s defence Prince didn’t do himself any favours as he shaped to walk after missing a leg glance. The ball had clipped the pad, but Prince motioned to make his way back to the pavilion so Harper raised his finger. Prince immediately called in a review and the pictures showed he’d missed the ball by some distance. His reprieve, though, didn’t last long before he again fell to Graeme Swann.Take five
South Africa accelerated during the afternoon session with the most free-scoring period of the match. With Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla both well-set, at one point a 10-over period brought a run rate above six-an-over as England started to lose control. With boundaries leaking the last thing they needed was to gift South Africa any extras, but to sum up their afternoon the total was boosted to the tune of five runs when Matt Prior missed a delivery from Swann that beat Smith and scooted through to hit the helmet.Jimmy heads to boiling point
It was seriously hot work in the middle as the day wore on and England started to feel the heat in more ways than one. After a wicketless session between lunch and tea they were desperate for a breakthrough, but Smith and Amla forged on. Jimmy Anderson’s mood wasn’t helped when he conceded consecutive boundaries to Smith. Paul Collingwood couldn’t do much about the first at fine leg, but Stuart Broad should have done better at mid-on with his dive. Anderson wasn’t impressed and when he collected a subsequent delivery in his follow through he hurled it straight back at the stumps in frustration.Hot under the collar
Anderson wasn’t the only one losing his cool. Graeme Swann is a chirpy, unflappable character most of the time, but even he started to lose his rag. When Amla played yet another sweep off him, Broad ambled around from deep square-leg to hurl the ball in and Swann clearly thought the batsmen should have been kept to a single. He waved his arms in annoyance and marched back towards slip with the odd chunter. When Swann can’t see the funny side you know the problems are mounting.Welcome home, Trotty
Jonathan Trott and Graeme Smith used to be team-mates at Western Province, but now they are adversaries of the strongest kind. Smith has made it clear he isn’t happy with the time Trott takes to prepare himself at the crease so there was always likely to be a bit of needle if Smith ever faced Trott’s bowling. To make it tougher for Trott, Smith had a hundred to his name and was seeing it like a football when he crunched four boundaries in an over including a dismissive lofted straight drive. Now all we need is Smith to have a bowl at Trott.

Aston Villa: Evans drops John McGinn update

After falling to a 3-1 home defeat against Chelsea on Boxing Day, Aston Villa’s next Premier League outing sees them take on Brentford at the weekend after their midweek clash against Leeds United was postponed due to a virus outbreak within the Yorkshire club.

Looking ahead to the match against Thomas Frank’s side, against whom Villa could only secure a 1-1 draw in their previous league meeting back in August, it seems as though Steven Gerrard’s side could welcome back a player who was not involved in the weekend’s defeat to the Blues.

What’s the latest?

According to a recent report from The Athletic by Gregg Evans, Villa midfielder John McGinn missed the Chelsea game through illness “but is expected to be back” for the match against Brentford next weekend.

Given how McGinn has started in each of his 16 Premier League appearances this season, with three goals and two assists in the process, it shows just how important he is to the side.

Also, the 27-year-old’s overall performances have proved what a crucial figure he is for Villa, with WhoScored listing him as their highest-rated player with a season rating of 7.18 based on his league performances throughout the campaign.

A welcome return

With all this in mind, it would surely be a big boost for Villa to have McGinn, who Evans said “can help make a difference,” back in the side for the match against Brentford, which would duly delight the supporters as well.

Gerrard has also previously shared his admiration for the Scotland international by saying that he feels like he is  “the lucky one that’s able to work with him and try to improve his game.”

Moving forward, with the Brentford match on the horizon, this would be a great opportunity for Villa to put their defeat against Chelsea behind them and secure another win to help push them further up the table.

If McGinn is ready to play again, he would surely give his side a better chance of securing all three points, as they haven’t won either of the two league games that he’s missed so far this season – one of which was against the Bees four months ago.

É entender a relação – finaliza.

Rangnick could axe his first Man Utd player

Despite not doing any business in the January transfer window so far, Manchester United have been in a frenzy of speculation surrounding the rumoured upset in the dressing room which has seen up to 17 players wanting to leave the club, and Ralf Rangnick could be set to get rid of his first player as Red Devils interim manager.

What’s the word?

According to today’s issue of Catalan newspaper Sport (via Sport Witness), Newcastle United have made an ‘important offer’ for an Anthony Martial, with the report suggesting that the Premier League club are not the only one interested in securing the signature of the striker.

Sevilla, Barcelona and Juventus have all been named alongside the Tyneside club in the race to sign Martial, with a suggestion that Newcastle have already offered just over €35m (£29.3m) for him.

However, the report added that Martial does not want the move to Eddie Howe’s side, nor does he want to go to Juventus, with claims that the Frenchman’s agent has ‘frozen all other offers on the table’ whilst they wait for a response from Barcelona. Only if that doesn’t materialise would they welcome another offer from Newcastle.

Fans will be buzzing

The news that a move away for Martial is on the cards, with a number of potential suitors rumoured to be involved in the chase for the player, is sure to leave many United fans buzzing as the club tries to get the 26-year-old out of the squad. That is due to his abysmal recent record.

The striker has scored only eight goals since the beginning of last season, with just one in the current campaign, meaning that he is failing to make an impact on the team and falling out of favour due to more prolific scorers joining the team, such as Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The France international was even labelled a “lightweight” by Simon Jordan, who claimed that “Martial will get you sacked” in a rant last year on talkSPORT.

According to SofaScore, when you look at the £180k-p/w forward’s performance in the 4-1 defeat to Watford in November, he had just 15 touches of the ball and lost possession with seven of those during his 45 minutes on the pitch. That puts into microcosm just how ineffective he has become in a United shirt, and why plenty of fans would be glad to see the back of him.

If the rumours are true that there is upset in the dressing room at Old Trafford, it will be important for Rangnick to use any opportunity to minimise that by axing fringe players who have vocalised that they want to leave, which Martial has done through his agent. Therefore, accepting an offer in January for the 26-year-old would seem a wise decision from the interim boss.

Charlotte Edwards eyes history in India

Charlotte Edwards believes she is leading the best England squad ever and is confident the ODI and Twenty20 champions can make history on their limited-overs tour of India

Charlotte Edwards believes she is leading the best England squad ever and is confident the ODI and Twenty20 champions can make history on their limited-overs tour of India. England have yet to win in India but Edwards, along with head coach Mark Lane, put faith in the squad despite the absence of two key players while also keeping in mind the ICC World Twenty20 in May.”We were here for a ten-day camp last year and we do have an idea about the conditions andwe have prepared well,” said Edwards at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. “India always tends to play better at home and we are all excited to face this challenge. It was snowing back home and out here it is warm but I think this is the best prepared England team ever though we will miss two key players in Claire Taylor and Holly Colvin.”England, who in 2009 won the World Cup, the Twenty20 World Cup, retained the Ashes and defeated Australia 4-0 in the NatWest series, will be playing five one-dayers and three Twenty20 matches on tour. “We have had a good 2009 and we want to build on the momentum leading into the ICC World Twenty20 Cup at the West Indies in May,” said Edwards. “In fact we look at this tour as a preparation for that tour.”Lane too was happy with the way the squad was adjusting to conditions. “This is a fit, strong and athletic team. The players have trained hard and this is a good opportunity,” he said. “This is a vital tour. They are professional cricketers, they may not bowl as fast as the men or hit as hard as them and may be they might have some extra emotions but I see no difference in coaching a womens’ team or a mens’ team. The differences have shrunk. We have some good batters and hopefully we will put Jhulan Goswami under the pump.”The tour will open with a warm-up match against Board President’s XI in Bangalore on February 17. The city will also host the first two ODIs on February 19 and 21. The next two matches have been scheduled for February 24 and 26 in Visakapatnam, with Mumbai’s MIG Stadium hosting the final ODI.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis set for Stoke loan

A number of Manchester City fans have flocked to the news that 19-year-old centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis is set to join Stoke City on a loan deal.

According to The Telegraph’s John Percy, the Potters are expected to complete the loan signing of the teeenage defender within the next 24 hours, following a medical which was scheduled to take place today.

Harwood-Bellis is currently on loan at Belgian outfit Anderlecht in a deal which had been intended for the full season. However, the youngster has played just 12 minutes of league football in the last seven games for the Brussels club, so it appears that City are favouring more regular game-time in the English Championship for the defender.

The 19-year-old is no stranger to that division, as he was previously sent out on loan to Blackburn Rovers for the second half of last season, where he made 19 appearances for the Lancashire club.

Fans pleased with impending Harwood-Bellis loan move

Twitter channel City Xtra shared the news of the impending loan deal and lots of City fans took to the comments sharing encouragement for the youngster, who one supporter hailed as “one for the future”. Indeed, Pep Guardiola said back in 2019 that the teenager has “a lot of quality”.
