The IPL received a shot in the arm after Indian home minister P Chidambaram and South Africa’s touring captain Graeme Smith remained positive about the security conditions in India. Their comments came in the wake of protests from a couple of right-wing political parties in the state of Maharashtra, who have opposed the participation of Australian and Pakistan players in the league due to India’s troubled diplomatic relations with the two countries.Leaders of the Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena [both regional parties] have come out strongly in their criticism of attacks on Indian students in Australia, and said they would protest against the participation of Australian players in the IPL by not allowing them to play in Maharashtra. The opposition to the participation of Pakistani players in the IPL has existed in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008, which resulted in a breakdown in relations between the the neighbours. However, Chidambaran assured the players of complete security during the IPL. “Let Australian players come to India. Let Pakistani players come to India. Let them play in Mumbai and I will guarantee them full security.”Smith said he has always enjoyed returning to India since his maiden trip nine years ago, and never felt insecure. “From my personal perspective I have been fortunate to come to India a lot of times and I’m going to be hopefully coming back many more. So it is a great opportunity to come here and play on tour and the IPL.”The South Africans reached Nagpur, the venue for the first Test starting on February 6, on Sunday. Smith acknowledged security was a major issue anywhere around the world. “We want to know we are looked after and so far we have got people who we trust and the Indian security guys have really been great and from that perspective no complaints,” he said.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has given the seven players, who were punished with bans and fines in the aftermath of the disastrous Australia tour, 30 days to appeal against the sanctions imposed on them.”We have sent all the seven players letters in which we have mentioned the reasons for their punishments and the players can now appeal under the PCB constitution,” Wasim Bari, the chief operating officer of the PCB, told AFP. “They can file appeals within 30 days.”Seven senior players were punished by the PCB last week following an inquiry committee report into the team’s poor performance in Australia where they lost all their matches. Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Shoaib Malik were handed bans, while the Akmal brothers and Shahid Afridi were fined.Bari had headed the six-member committee that investigated and recommended punishments to the players. “We held a thorough inquiry and took into consideration all the facts and background and made decisions to solve the problems in Pakistan cricket,” Bari said. The PCB has named three judges to hear the appeals. “The PCB governing board has appointed two retired Supreme court judges – Muneer Sheikh and Jamshed Ali Shah – and a former high court judge, Irfan Qadir, who will deal with appeals,” said Taffazul Rizvi, PCB’s legal advisor.None of the players has spoken publicly about their punishment or indicated they will appeal.

Spurs open Jesse Lingard talks

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a move for Jesse Lingard in 2022…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Sky Sports journalist Mark McAdam, who delivered an intriguing update on the situation live on air on Thursday morning.

“This will get Tottenham fans excited, they’ve been screaming for a creative midfielder, someone to replace Christian Eriksen, someone who can score goals, set up goals, and be really dynamic in that front three.

“And Tottenham fans will like this one, because potentially, Jesse Lingard is on their radar,” he said.

“Tottenham are keen to sign Lingard and they have approached his representatives over the course of this window, potentially with a view to a move in January, possibly, maybe more likely, the summer.

“There has been dialogue opened between Jesse Lingard’s representatives and Tottenham.”

Exciting news?

Indeed, it does appear as if many around north London would love to see Spurs make a move for the Manchester United outcast, and it’s easy to see why.

In reactions sourced by This Is Futbol, several members of the Lilywhites faithful expressed their delight in previous links to the England international.

“Get it done Don Fabio,” claimed one, whilst another said: “yes, a midfielder who scored goals”. A further fan even pointed out that he fits the homegrown quota.

Meanwhile, 73% of over 340 supporters polled by Football FanCast were fully behind the arrival of Lingard.

Lingard has struggled for minutes at Old Trafford this season, being restricted to 272 minutes in all competitions but it was only last season that he proved his credentials during a loan stint at London rivals West Ham United.

He delivered nine goals and five assists across 16 appearances to fire the Irons into the Europa League. This included a goal in their win over Spurs in the Premier League, too.

Those at the London Stadium were desperate to keep him following the spell, with assistant manager Stuart Pearce lauding him as a “special lad” to talkSPORT during the summer.

A career average of 1.4 key passes per 90, including a high of 1.9 during the 2016/17 league campaign, does indeed suggest that Lingard could be the man to fulfil that Eriksen role in N17.

Therefore, McAdam is right – there is plenty to be excited about if you’re a Lilywhites supporter. As evident above, many would love to see him join, either this month or in the summer.

Australia look to Ashes with contract list

Australia’s selectors have outlined their plans for the Ashes and next year’s World Cup after retaining faith in their recent influx of emerging talent

Australia’s selectors have outlined their plans for the Ashes and next year’s World Cup after retaining faith in their recent influx of emerging talent. Andrew Hilditch’s panel dropped a couple of senior bowlers in Stuart Clark and Nathan Bracken, but gave full-time contracts to the fresh quicks Ryan Harris and Clint McKay for 2010-11.Steven Smith, the exciting allrounder from New South Wales, wins his first spot in the 25-man list while Tasmania’s Tim Paine has replaced Graham Manou as the back-up keeper. Andrew McDonald seems fortunate to hold his place, although he will come into contention for the tour of England, and Callum Ferguson, the South Australia batsman, is retained despite not playing since a knee reconstruction in October. Shaun Tait remains in favour while David Hussey misses out, and Brad Hodge’s first-class retirement officially ended his remote chances of another deal.Clark has not represented his country since the Ashes defeat at The Oval in August and Bracken spent much of the season out following knee surgery. “It is disappointing for Stuart Clark and Nathan Bracken who have not received contracts,” Hilditch said. “Both Stuart and Nathan have fantastic records for Australia and not renewing their contracts was a very hard decision. The reality is that other bowlers have seized the opportunity over the last six months in both Test and limited-overs cricket. I am sure Nathan and Stuart will look to start next season well and force their way back into the Australian side.”While the rankings remain confidential, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson should have filled the top four places for retainers of around A$1.5 million in the contract period beginning on July 1. It is a big leap for Watson, who has become an essential player in all three forms after securing his Test spot as an opener during the Ashes tour. Since then he has scored 926 runs at 54.47 and taken 13 wickets in 10 matches, while also being an important asset in the one-day and Twenty20 teams.Brett Lee’s ranking has dropped dramatically after his Test retirement, while Doug Bollinger and Harris have stepped up from the fringes after their strong displays in the five-day outfit. “The Australian side is very much in the final stages of its preparation for … the Ashes series in Australia and the World Cup for 50-over cricket in India,” Hilditch said. “The contract list has a good blend of experience and youth, and recognises the very strong performances of the Australian side in Test and limited-overs cricket this summer.”The selectors rate the players from one to 20 in both Test and limited-overs sections, with the numbers combined to achieve an overall ranking. Five players qualified for fixed contracts by finishing in the top six of each list and will earn an average of $1.5m over the next year, including all game fees. The 25th-ranked man receives a retainer of $200,000 and the amounts rise incrementally. Additional marketing contracts allow the players to collect another six-figure sum while prize-money, match payments (for 20 members) and personal endorsements are added extras. The panel takes into account form over the past 12 months and the likelihood of the cricketers appearing in international sides in the next year. The number of Twenty20 internationals on the calendar has made it hard for short-form specialists, such as David Warner and David Hussey, to gain contracts and they will have to rely on their state deals unless they qualify for a national contract through international appearances. However, Tait, who only plays Twenty20 and domestic one-dayers, held his spot. “We see him as an important member of the World Twenty20 squad and a real chance to force his way back into the Australian 50-over side,” Hilditch said. “At his best he is a powerful weapon in limited-overs cricket.”The size of the payment pool has convinced James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, that the sport is an increasingly attractive career-choice. “Australia’s top-level cricketers are well paid with marketing contract incentives rewarding players for their off-field work on behalf of cricket and recognising that this is an important part of their roles,” he said. “In addition to CA-contracted players, it is also important to note that state payments continue to increase.” The minimum for a domestic contract is $50,000, rising to a maximum of $140,000.2010-11 contracted players Doug Bollinger, Michael Clarke, Callum Ferguson, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Hopes, Phillip Hughes, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Shaun Marsh, Andrew McDonald, Clint McKay, Marcus North, Tim Paine, Ricky Ponting, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Shaun Tait, Adam Voges, Shane Watson, Cameron White.

Spurs: Levy could repeat Ndombele mistake

Daniel Levy could repeat one of his biggest mistakes at Tottenham Hotspur after a shock report emerged this week…

What’s the word?

According to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Spurs tried to sign Manchester United forward Anthony Martial on loan this month but the out-of-favour Frenchman turned down their approach despite wanting to leave Old Trafford.

The Red Devils’ hierarchy are said to want his full wages (£250k-per-week) and a loan fee covered to let him leave before deadline day on January 31st.

It’s not the first time that the north London outfit have been mooted with interest in the 26-year-old, who is currently valued at €40m (£34m), after the Manchester Evening News claimed Spurs were keen during the summer window.

Another Levy mistake

What a disaster this would be.

Not only would Martial be a terrible signing for Spurs but it also shows that the Lilywhites chairman has not learned his lessons.

The 30-time France international has been a big disappointment for United, having scored only £36m move back in September 2015.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-transfer-gossip-rumours-conte-paratici-levy-premier-league” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Last season, he only found the net four times in the Premier League as his woes started to become apparent and as a result of his poor form, his attitude and work rate has been called into question – something that would not appeal to Spurs boss Antonio Conte whatsoever.

“His body language is horrible to watch, he doesn’t want to run around and work hard to be Manchester United’s number nine,” claimed former Aston Villa striker Dion Dublin after a drab outing in the Carabao Cup back in September.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has been a little more scathing.

“I think he’s lightweight. I think he does it when he feels like it,” he said (via The Sun). “To me, he is the embodiment of footballers who have an inordinate amount of talent but simply don’t have the psychological application or the innate strength required to compete at that level and not be a key component of Manchester United’s team.”

Whilst Martial would not command a transfer fee the size of their club-record signing Tangy Ndombele (£55m), his extortionate wages would make this loan swoop a very expensive deal indeed.

After two-and-a-half years of inconsistency and controversy, it appears the French midfield’s time at Spurs could soon be coming to an end, making Levy’s investment in him seem ghastly – even more so after a measly ten goal and nine assists in 91 appearances.

Martial is far from the answer to Conte’s frontline woes and as such, Spurs must steer clear of going back in for the struggling United flop. If they do, Levy could well make another horrendous transfer mistake.
