Lampard must axe Holgate for Everton

Everton have had one of the most impactful January transfer windows in the Premier League this month, making five signings and sacking Rafa Benitez, to replace him with Frank Lampard in a clear effort to improve and give the club the turn-around in their season that they desperately need.

It has been a season of nightmares for Toffees fans, with the side currently just four points off the relegation zone and Lampard’s first few Premier League games in charge will surely determine if Everton find themselves in a battle again the drop or whether they can turn the tide, pulling away from the bottom of the table with a run of winning form over the next few games.

One area that has been a major concern for the Merseyside club is their defence, albeit adding two new defenders to their squad in January.

The central defensive positions have been the focus of poor performances, with Yerry Mina only just returning from a long injury spell, the side has relied on Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey, who have been unable to stop the side from leaking goals with 35 conceded so far and only three clean sheets kept, with only Newcastle United recording less this season.

Holgate in particular has proven time and time again that he is incapable of offering performances that can be positively impactful in the team, and Lampard should be looking to axe the £64k-per-week dud from starting line ups if he wants to improve the defence in the remainder of the season.

From a red card in a dangerous challenge on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after just ten minutes on the pitch against Tottenham earlier this season to numerous poor performances that have left the centre back as the worst rated defender in the entire Everton squad this season according to SofaScore.

Lampard masterclass

With that being said, the new Everton boss could drop his first masterclass at Goodison Park by axing Holgate who was criticised for being “lethargic” by Everton journalist, David Prentice, and could form a dynamic defensive duo in Mina and Godfrey instead, with Godfrey offering more positive attributes in his position.

According to Squawka, the 24-year-old has made more tackles, more blocks, won 33 more ground duels and produced over twice as many clearances for the Toffees this season compared to Holgate, so it seems like he would be the best option for building a reliable partnership with Mina over the remaining months of the season.

Lampard will lead his updated Everton side out for the first time in their FA Cup clash against Brentford this weekend, and it will be interesting to see if he includes any of the new signings in his starting lineup and where he will make changes in the previous line-ups we have seen struggling under Benitez.

Either way, it is unlikely to include Holgate, someone let the former manager down on a regular basis.

Onze minutos e dois sustos: estreia da formação ideal ofensiva do São Paulo

MatériaMais Notícias

Sidão; Militão, Bruno Alves, Rodrigo Caio e Edimar; Jucilei e Petros; Marcos Guilherme, Shaylon e Cueva; Diego Souza.

Tottenham monitoring Djed Spence

Tottenham have been watching Djed Spence this season, according to the Daily Telegraph’s Matt Law.

The Lowdown: Spence impressing with Forest

The right-back joined Nottingham Forest on loan from Middlesbrough at the start of the season and has since gone on to make a fantastic impression at the City Ground, having made 23 appearances in all competitions.

The 21-year-old played a huge part in Forest’s dominant 4-1 mauling of FA Cup holders Leicester City at the weekend. Sealing the result with a goal on the hour mark, Spence earned high praise from Trevor Sinclair, who labelled the youngster a ‘Premier League player’.

With his Boro contract expiring in less than 18 months’ time, the Teessiders will not be short of interest in the player, as a number of top-flight clubs are said to be monitoring the full-back.

The Latest: Tottenham watching Spence

According to Law on Twitter, “Tottenham have been watching Djed Spence this season”.

This follows reports that the north London club had two bids rejected for the defender during the January transfer window, but these offers are believed to have been significantly lower than Middlesbrough’s £15m valuation.

Consequently, Spence is set to resolve his future in the summer, as a whole host of clubs are said to be interested in his signature, including Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal.

The Verdict: One for the future

Spence produced a man-of-the-match performance when Forest defeated the Gunners in the FA Cup third round last month, with the defender’s display hailed as ‘unbelievable’ by Ian Wright.

The right-back continued to impress against Premier League opposition with an emphatic performance on Sunday. Martin Keown called him a ‘Rolls-Royce’, approving of Mikel Arteta’s pursuit of the Boro defender.

If Tottenham are to ramp up their interest ahead of the summer transfer window, they will surely face a tough fight to secure Spence’s signature. However, with right-back remaining a problem position for Antonio Conte, the 21-year-old could prove to be the answer for years to come if he can maintain the form he is showing in Forest’s hugely impressive FA Cup run.

Dwayne Leverock, the burly left-arm spinner that flew to fame during the 2007 World Cup, has come out of international retirement to join Bermuda’s squad for the Intercontinental Shield game against UAE next month.Leverock, 38, became an one of the few positive icons from a maligned tournament in the Caribbean when he hurled his generous frame at slip to take a stunning one-handed catch and dismiss Indian batsman Robin Uthappa. After Bermuda failed to qualify for the 2011 World Cup in Asia during qualifiers in South Africa last year, Leverock announced his international retirement but stayed within the game by captaining club side Southampton Rangers. Now he is a surprise inclusion in the 25-strong squad that Bermuda national coach David Moore says he wants to form the basis of his team for the next year.”He’s made himself available,” said Moore. “He approached me about being involved. He told me that he was interested in being part of the programme and that’s where we are at the moment. We’ll just see how he goes, how he trains, and so on, but it’s good to have him back in the squad, although the competition is quite stiff from the likes of Rodney Trott and Joshua Gilbert.”The squad will be trimmed to 15 players for the four-day Intercontinental Shield match against UAE which starts on July 5.

Brown and Read turn the screw on Essex

Warwickshire’s bowlers put in a solid shift in sweat and drive but could not do enough to undermine Yorkshire’s resolve, even on a pitch that never allowed a batsman to feel entirely comfortable

05-Jul-2010
ScorecardAn unbroken half-century partnership between Alistair Brown and Chris Read enabled title-chasing Nottinghamshire to gain the upper hand of their Championship duel against Essex at Chelmsford.By stumps they had put on 54 in 13 overs to carry their side to 126 for 5 in reply to an Essex total of 154 all out that represented something of a recovery after they had lost half their side for 45.Their problems began in the fourth over of the morning when John Maunders was needlessly run out attempting a single. Jaik Mickleburgh was bowled by Charlie Shreck soon afterwards before Andre Adams plunged the home side into further trouble when he removed Billy Godleman and Matt Walker in the same over.He did so by finding enough swing and lift to discover the edge and wicketkeeper Read did the rest. Paul Franks then got rid of Tom Westley, again with the help of the impressive Read who went on to claim six victims in an innings for the seventh time in his career.Tim Phillips did his best to keep the Essex innings afloat after entering the battle with the score on 69 for 6. His concentration and careful shot selection enabled him to gather a valuable unbeaten 46 that contained seven boundaries. His biggest support came from Maurice Chambers, the pair putting together a stand of 34 for the final wicket which represented the highest of the innings. Shreck and Franks finished with 3 for 40 and 3 for 20 respectively while Adams’ two successes came at a cost of 26.While Chambers performed doggedly with the bat, it was with the new ball that he made the biggest impact, his hostility and swing quickly putting Nottinghamshire on the back foot.He struck in his opening over by getting rid of Bilal Shafayat with an lbw decision and then bowled Alex Hales. He later trapped Steve Mullaney leg before and so often did he pass the outside edge that he could consider himself unlucky not to have claimed further successes. The other two wickets to fall were picked up by left-arm spinner Phillips. Mark Wagh fell lbw while Samit Patel was caught at short leg by Godleman while pushing forward.Nottinghamshire found themselves in trouble at 72 for 5 before they gained the initiative through Brown and Read. Read completed a highly successful day’s work by reaching the close on 31 which included a straight driven six at the expense of Phillips.Brown will resume on 30 with Nottinghamshire seeking another 29 to move into a first-innings lead. An absorbing opening day finished with Chambers having claimed 3 for 49 and Phillips 2 for 17.

West Ham: Alan Smith slams Moyes comments

Football.London’s chief writer Alan Smith has provided a scathing review of David Moyes, questioning the manager’s comments following West Ham’s 1-1 draw with 17th-placed Newcastle United.

The Lowdown

The Irons failed to secure three points on Saturday as they were held to a disappointing draw against a resurgent Magpies outfit, who have won three and drawn three of their last six league games.

The Hammers failed to push on from sixth-placed Arsenal, who now match them on 42 points, with one goal the difference in the league table. However, Mikel Arteta’s men now have three games in hand over Moyes’ side, whilst Wolves and Tottenham also have extra games to play.

The 58-year-old could be getting more worried as the weeks pass, as West Ham could very easily let European football slip through their fingers altogether, never mind a Champions League finish.

The Latest

Smith took to Twitter to share his review of the game from Football.London, highlighting the issues with Moyes’ management style which he feels are negatively affecting the club.

The reporter tweeted: “Should a club with top-four ambitions be ‘thrilled’ with a point at home to the team in 17th? Probably not but, then, did West Ham ever believe deep down that it was possible?”

Smith proceeded to claim in his corresponding article that it was once again tired legs and a lack of squad depth which caused the slack performance against Newcastle, despite Moyes’ insistence that fatigue is not an issue for the club.

The Verdict

Smith is right to criticise the Hammers boss, given his continue denial of the ongoing issues at the club. Moyes even said he was “thrilled” to have gained a point after such a poor performance, but coming from a team fighting for Champions League football, this is definitely not encouraging to hear.

Whilst the Irons are much improved when compared with two years ago, it was always inevitable that the squad were going to struggle in the second half of the season if the east Londoners failed to bring in any new additions in January.

This could have a lasting effect on the club, in terms of the calibre of players they will be able to attract in the future, and also their ability to retain their best talent.

If West Ham are to cement themselves as a top-six side, then Moyes may want to take a more ambitious outlook rather than being satisfied with a home draw against a relegation-threatened outfit.

Tendulkar braves demanding conditions and delivers

After leading India to safety with his fifth double-century, Sachin Tendulkar spoke about how demanding it was to bat for so long after fielding for two days

Sidharth Monga at the SSC29-Jul-2010

Sachin Tendulkar: “For almost all four days, I have been on the field. It’s been demanding on the body, but it’s held up pretty well”•Associated Press

Sachin Tendulkar had just reached his double-century. He was into the ninth hour of his innings. He had been on the field for the whole match, except for perhaps one session. He had had a few visits from the physio. The tea break was approaching. Twice in the next two overs, MS Dhoni hit shots slightly wide of the outfielders. And Tendulkar hared across for the twos, running as though they were his 199th and 200th runs. That was perhaps the most impressive aspect of the 95 runs Tendulkar added today to his overnight 108. If a run was there to be scored, he was there to score it.After Tendulkar had helped India to relative safety on day three, today ceased being a battle between bat and ball. There was hardly anything to trouble Tendulkar. It had come down to endurance, and the need to bat as long as possible to try and prevent his bowlers from having to bowl in the humidity.Tendulkar spoke about the physical challenge of batting for 516 minutes after having fielded for more than five sessions. “It’s been challenging,” he said. “Of course the conditions are tough. Yesterday when I got into the dressing room, I had a long ice bath. I was in the ice tub for a while. Then I did some stretches, had an early dinner, and I was in bed by 8.30.”I just relaxed as much as possible. Because I went off to sleep early, I was up early morning, sort of relaxed a bit and stretched a bit in the morning. When you are off the field time flies in between. When you are off the field, go back to the hotel and sleep, when you wake in the morning, it’s time to go back to the ground again. But that’s what Test cricket is all about. For almost all four days, I have been on the field. It’s been demanding on the body, but it’s held up pretty well.”Another moment that stood out in what was largely an error-free effort was when Suresh Raina brought up his debut hundred. There was as much joy on Tendulkar’s face as on Raina’s. Like Virender Sehwag said, it was difficult to tell who the debutant was. They then spoke for what seemed a longish period between deliveries.”I was very happy for him,” Tendulkar said of the moments after Raina got his century and before the next ball. “Many guys doubted whether Suresh was a good Test player or not. He has done well, I am very pleased. The way he batted was fantastic. All I told him was, ‘Enjoy this moment. You have earned something special. This will always be the highlight of your career. You will have many more hundreds, you will achieve many more things in your life, but this will always be something special.'”Admittedly this was a flat track – Tendulkar didn’t try to suggest otherwise. But he also knew that – until the follow-on was avoided -India were one mistake away from getting into big trouble. He had to curb the temptation of looking for runs, especially because the track and the bowling were ripe with runs.”It was tough. There were times when you felt you could go over the fielders,” Tendulkar said. “But also the Test match was poised critically. It was an important phase, and one mistake would have cost us quite a bit. So I felt it was important to just try and control all those temptations, and play a percentage game.”Those joyful shots came at intervals. His scoring-rate never fell though he eliminated risks. With not much life left in the match, everybody’s thoughts turned to the elusive triple-century. This was a good chance: there was enough time left, all he needed was for MS Dhoni to stay with him.The error from Tendulkar arrived, though. Just after tea, the first ball of Tillakaratne Dislhan’s spell turned a bit extra and Prasanna Jayawardene pouched a bat-pad offering. Tendulkar later said that the triple-century was not on his mind.”I have always gone out and played,” he said. “People look at records, not me. I would want to score as many runs as possible. Whenever it comes, it comes. It is never too late. I will keep trying, but that is not the end of the world to me. There are many more things to cricket, and that is where the focus is. It’s not on records. If it has to come, it will come.”Whatever milestones he passed during the course of the innings – be it the most 150-plus scores, be it drawing level with Steve Waugh’s 168 Test caps, or be it yet another double-century – saving the Test was his top priority. To keep the series alive. And he was a satisfied man at the end of it all. And when he is satisfied, so is the rest of India.
