Water and Power Development Authority, who currently head the Division 1 points table, are in big trouble against Rawalpindi at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, despite Pakistan fast bowler Rana Naved-ul-Hasan’s haul of seven wickets, as they slumped to 28 for 5 after bowling the hosts out for 249. Naved ripped through Rawalpindi’s top and middle order, finishing with 7 for 97, with only Adnan Mufti offering any serious resistance, as he counter-attacked to good effect. Mufti slammed 14 fours in his 76, which came from 71 balls. The WAPDA batsmen, however, let their bowlers down, as none of them have managed to reach double figures so far. Sadaf Hussein ended the day with 3 for 13, while his new-ball partner, Rizwan Akbar took 2 for 15.Iftikhar Anjum and Mohammad Khalil ran through Karachi Blues to give Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited complete control of their game at the National Stadium in Karachi. Both fast bowlers took five-fors, as Karachi were blown away for 64. Rameez Raja was the only batsman to reach double figures, his 26 more than three times higher than the next best score of 8. Zohaib Khan (52*) and Shahid Yousuf (60*) then added an unbeaten 121 for the third wicket to take ZTBL to 192 for 2, and a lead of 128.An allround bowling display from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited was the key as Faisalabad were dismissed for 220 on the first day at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. Left-arm spinner Imran Khan was the best of the bowlers, taking 4 for 49, with fast bowler Asad Ali backing him up with 3 for 74, while Imran Ali and Adli Raza also picked up a wicket each. The hosts failed to build any significant partnerships, with Ijaz Ahmed jnr the only batsman to show any application. His 67 contained nine fours and took 131 balls, with only two other batsmen managing to face even half as many deliveries. SNGP were 8 for no loss at stumps.Pakistan allrounder Azhar Mahmood took five wickets as Habib Bank bowled Islamabad out for 184 at the Diamond Club Ground. Mahmood made the early breakthroughs to reduce the hosts to 38 for 3, then came back to pick up two more to leave them reeling at 84 for 8. However, Imad Wasim responded with a fighting 76 not out, adding 32 with Rauf Akbar for the ninth wicket and 68 with Nasrullah Khan for the tenth. Wasim’s innings included 12 fours and two sixes as he took the attack to the bowlers. Left-arm fast bowler Kamran Hussein backed Mahmood up with 3 for 39. Habib Bank stuttered in their reply, losing three wickets with just 64 on the board.Pakistan batsman Fawad Alam’s 10th first class hundred was the foundation of National Bank of Pakistan’s 274 for 5 against Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. Alam batted for almost five hours and faced 179 balls to make exactly 100 before he was caught behind off Waqas Ahmad. He shared a third-wicket stand of 114 with Rashad Riaz, who was run out for 75. Sialkot took two late wickets, that of Alam and Rehman Qadir, who made 49, to slow NBP’s progress.Multan managed 220 in their first innings against Pakistan International Airlines, with none of their batsmen able to capitalise on getting a start and going on to make a big score at the Gymkhana Ground in Okhara. Taimur Ahmed was the top scorer with 29, while four other batsmen got at least 20. Kamran Sajid and Najaf Shah did most of the damage for PIA, dismissing the top four batsmen and claiming seven wickets in total between them. In reply, Multan found themselves 25 for 2, with Agha Sabir (1) and Shoib Khan Snr (1) both back in the pavilion.

Wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins, who had a poor tour of India, has been replaced by Canterbury’s uncapped Reece Young in New Zealand’s 13-member squad for the two-Test home series against Pakistan that begins on January 7. Offspinner Jeetan Patel and top-order batsman BJ Watling are the other players to be dropped from the Test side. Daniel Vettori will return to lead the team after missing the three Twenty20 matches that kick off the tour, beginning on Boxing Day, as he recovers from a back injury.”We have kept faith with the majority of the squad who performed well in the Test matches against India and want to build on the positive steps the team took in that series,” Mark Greatbatch, who was replaced as the team’s coach by John Wright, and took over as the chief selector, said. “One new face is wicketkeeper Reece Young who gets a chance after performing well over a number of seasons at domestic and the New Zealand A-level. It’s disappointing for Gareth Hopkins who misses out on selection.”In Vettori’s absence, Ross Taylor will lead an inexperienced Twenty20 side that includes three new faces – Dean Brownlie, Luke Woodcock and Adam Milne, who is 18 years old. Brendon McCullum, whose participation in the early phases of the tour was in doubt following a back injury, has been included despite doubts over his match-fitness. Peter McGlashan is in the T20 side as a stand-by wicketkeeper, giving New Zealand the option of playing McCullum as a specialist batsman, as he has been doing in Tests for a year now.”Dean Brownlie and Luke Woodcock have both enjoyed very good domestic form over the last couple of seasons and richly deserve their opportunity,” Greatbatch said. “Adam Milne is a promising young bowler and we are keen to give him some early exposure in international cricket. He is a young up-and-comer with the potential to have a big impact in international cricket for many years. Twenty20 is the ideal format for the new guys to get some international experience and exposure.”Brendon is keen to play and we are monitoring his recovery closely. He will undergo fitness testing later this week and we will make a call, closer to the start of the match.”Following the Twenty20s and the Tests, the teams will also play six one-dayers as their final preparation for the 2011 World Cup in the subcontinent.Test squad: Daniel Vettori (capt), Brent Arnel, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Andy McKay, Tim McIntosh, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson, Reece Young (wk)Twenty20 squad: Ross Taylor (capt), Dean Brownlie, Ian Butler, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (wk), Nathan McCullum, Peter McGlashan (wk), Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Scott Styris, Luke Woodcock

No entanto, o panorama mudou.

South Africa in a 'good space' – Amla

The Newlands pitch is “more challenging for the batsmen than it is for the fielding team,” Hashim Amla said at the end of the opening day

The Newlands pitch is “more challenging for the batsmen than it is for the fielding team,” Hashim Amla said at the end of the opening day of the deciding Cape Town Test. Amla was pleased that, despite the challenging conditions, South Africa finished at stumps “in a good space, considering we were put in to bat.”With moisture in the air and heavy cloud above, it was considered a good toss to lose, since there was uncertainty over whether the winning captain should exploit conditions by bowling or bat in the knowledge that the weather was expected to clear. “I may have bowled,” Amla said. “The pitch has a lot in it for the bowlers. If you hit a decent length, it has a lot of swing and a lot of nip.”Amla felt the South African batsmen did a good job negotiating their way through the tricky conditions. “The day went quite well for us especially since the track has some juice in it and given the overhead conditions.” Amla also praised the batsmen for not allowing the breaks in play to cause jitters in the line-up, as 112 minutes were lost to rain and bad light. “It is a mental shift to switch on and switch off. Fortunately, it went quite well for us after the break.”After just nine overs, the players marched off the field for light drizzle and bad light. An hour and 15 minutes of play was lost in that delay. At that stage, Amla had scored just one run off 10 balls and South Africa were in a tricky position at 23 for one. The early lunch break allowed for some reflection and in Amla’s case provided an injection of intent for the session that followed. He came out and scored 58 off 70 balls in the post-lunch session, including nine fours and a six. “I had a couple of chocolates, I think it was a sugar rush,” Amla joked.Of course, for the measured man from Durban, it was nothing of the sort and although he had not planned it, he was able to take advantage of some of the bowling he was presented with. “I think I just had a lot of bad balls. There were a few full balls that I got to capitalise on and momentum just went with me for that bit.” Three fours and the solitary six came off the bowling of Sreesanth, whom Amla eventually gave his wicket. While there was nothing of the fiery exchange witnessed between Sreesanth and Graeme Smith, some words in anger were muttered from the Indian bowler. Amla said that had nothing to do with his dismissal. “There weren’t any words exchanged, I didn’t say anything back. I tried to keep it down and I got a top edge.”Sunny skies saw South Africa to the close of play, them having lost just four wickets, and a bright forecast is predicted for tomorrow. Amla didn’t think that would necessarily translate into better batting conditions. “I don’t know if it will be very good for batting since there is a fair covering of grass on the pitch. The ball is 70 overs old and it’s still nipping.”He did think a sustained presence of sunlight may “dry the wicket out” but predicted a “crucial first session” for the hosts. For that reason, Amla could not identify a total that South Africa would be comfortable posting. “Let’s see what the conditions are like. If it’s cloudy it will be a lot tougher, if it’s a sunny day, maybe the wicket might flatten out.”

Title glory finally in sight for Parida

It took ten years and a different team for Parida to gain another shot at domestic glory

Abhishek Purohit at Moti Bagh14-Jan-2011

Different team, same opponent, and looks good to be a different result for Rashmi Parida•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Orissa have never made it to a Ranji Trophy final. Almost a decade ago, they played Baroda for a place in the final at the GSFC Ground in Vadodara. Rashmi Parida made 94 and 71, but Orissa conceded a massive first-innings lead, and with it the semi-final. It took ten years and a different team for Parida to gain another shot at domestic glory. The opponent hasn’t changed, but Parida is now a professional player for Rajasthan, and his twin half-centuries have put them on course for their first Ranji crown at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara.Parida was understandably elated at the prospect of being able to win the premier domestic tournament for the first time. “That was the biggest match of my life then. And this is the biggest match now. It is very satisfying to play the final for the first time in my career,” Parida said. “Last time, I could not help my team beat Baroda. This is another chance for me. It is a challenge, and I want to do it this time. If I can, it will be memorable for the rest of my life.”Rajasthan’s batting has been bolstered by the presence of the three professionals – Aakash Chopra, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Parida – and they have hardly suffered a collapse this season. But they were stuttering today at 11 for 3, then 61 for 4, and all the hard work over nine matches was under danger of coming unstuck. But despite the early departure of Chopra and Kanitkar, Parida’s calming presence in the middle was reassuring for Rajasthan. “I have to credit the Baroda bowlers for creating pressure. At that stage, our plan was to play out 10-15 overs and try to build a partnership of 30-40 runs, and then we would be back in the game. I did not add many with Robin Bist, but we tried to play ourselves in and tire out the bowlers.”Parida added 50 with Bist, but it was his unbeaten 140-run partnership with former India Under-19 captain Ashok Menaria that took the game away from Baroda. Menaria was the aggressor in the stand, and Parida advised him to play his natural game. “I always like to be aggressive. I was trying to be defensive initially, but that has never been my game, and I was getting a bit bogged down,” Menaria said. “But Paddy told me that if you feel like going for your shots, just go for them.”And Menaria did. His assault on Bhargav Bhatt, whom he hit for three sixes in an over, emphatically swung the momentum in favour of the visitors. Menaria explained that he had planned the charge. “Actually Bhatt was bothering me since long. He was bowling consistently in the right areas, and there were close-in fielders. There was no one on the straight boundary; there was a deep midwicket I think. I thought that if I get it out of the middle of the bat, the ball would clear the ropes anyways. So I decided to hit out. After that the field spread and I was able to take runs easily.”There had been ecstatic celebrations in the Rajasthan camp after they had taken the first-innings lead earlier today, but both Parida and Menaria felt the match was not over yet. “The game is still open, and anything can happen on the last day,” Menaria said. According to Parida, Rajasthan’s plan will be to bat till lunch tomorrow, and take it from there. In their ninth attempt, Rajasthan will hope to finish on the winning side in the final for the first time.
