Delhi rout Kochi after Sehwag masterclass

Virender Sehwag showcased his class on a tricky Nehru Stadium surface on which numerous deliveries hardly got up above ankle height. Sehwag took his time before exploding in the end to lift Delhi Daredevils to 157, a score that proved beyond Kochi Tuskers Kerala and breathed some life in to Delhi’s doddering campaign. In a knock that must surely go down as one of the best IPL innings, Sehwag smashed 49 off his last 15 deliveries to surge to 80 off 47, on a wicket where even survival was an achievement for batsmen.Smarting from the big defeat against Deccan Chargers on a green-tinged home pitch, Kochi went to the opposite spectrum of surface preparation, dishing out a dry and loose wicket on which the ball kept alarmingly low right from the start. But they ran in to a determined Sehwag who, quickly realising that his usual cavalier style was not going to work, changed his approach, playing as safely as a Sehwag can.The surface had come under scrutiny at the toss when Sehwag voiced doubts over it, saying the top surface was coming loose when someone walked on the wicket. Right away, the first ball from Sreesanth, in the second over, hardly got above David Warner’s shin, and disturbed his off stump as he was caught clueless on the back foot. The fourth ball just rolled along the ground after pitching on a length, catching Naman Ojha on the boot in front of leg stump as Sehwag watched incredulously from the non-striker’s end.Delhi’s innings was built around a 56-run stand between Yogesh Nagar and Sehwag after Venugopal Rao fell to leave them at 35 for 3 in the seventh over. The extent to which Sehwag reined himself in was evident when Delhi went without a boundary for 38 balls. It was Nagar who ended the drought when he launched R Vinay Kumar past extra cover in the 12th over.Sehwag, who was on a scarcely believable 31 off 32, broke free in the next over, slamming Ravindra Jadeja for consecutive sixes over long-off and deep midwicket. On a pitch where batsmen were finding it difficult to hang in, Sehwag toyed with the bowling. The shots that had been put away came out in a torrent of calculated hitting. It rained pulls, whips, inside-out lofts, late cuts on a hapless Kochi attack. Vinay Kumar disappeared for 15 in the 15th over, B Akhil was scattered for 18 in the next.Sehwag’s complete control over his craft was on display against Ramesh Powar. Even as the offspinner tossed the ball up, Sehwag found time to dance down the track and lift him effortlessly against the turn over extra cover. His dismissal in the next over off Vinay was also characteristic, caught at deep extra cover on the edge of the rope, going inside out with three men in front of square on the off side boundary. But his charge lifted Delhi to 157, after they had been 62 for 3 in the 13th over.Shell-shocked Kochi’s only chance on the treacherous wicket was if their top order came good, but it wasn’t to be. The pitch didn’t play a major role in the first two dismissals though. IPL debutant Michael Klinger flicked Morne Morkel only for Roelof van der Merwe, in for the injured James Hopes, to pull off a blinder at square leg. Two deliveries later, Brendon McCullum decided that the only way to tackle the unpredictable surface was the blind charge, and lost his middle stump to Irfan Pathan.Parthiv Patel found just how difficult the track was, as a back-of-a-length Pathan delivery barely rose a foot, easily going under his defensive push and disturbing off stump. As a disgusted Parthiv walked off in a volley of expletives, it was left to Kochi’s two most-experienced batsmen, Mahela Jayawardene and Brad Hodge, to salvage the chase from 28 for 3.Jayawardene hung around for a while but it was always going to be difficult to get more than eight an over on such a wicket. In trying to whip Ajit Agarkar over midwicket, he spooned a tame catch to Sehwag when on 18. Hodge could not capitalise on a dropped chance by Pathan on 15 and his dismissal by Morne Morkel in the 14th over effectively ended Kochi’s chances though a few hits from Ravindra Jadeja reduced the margin of defeat.

Zagueiros: Arboleda e Bruno Alves
Volantes: Araruna, Hudson, Jucilei e Petros
Meias: Everton, Lucas Fernandes, Nene, Shaylon e Valdívia
Atacantes: Caíque, Marcos Guilherme e Tréllez

'SL board confident of facing any charges'

Sri Lanka Cricket is ready to take on any charges levelled against them with regards to corruption and misappropriation of funds, secretary Nishantha Ranatunga has said

Sa'adi Thawfeeq10-May-2011Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Nishantha Ranatunga has said the board is ready to take on any charges levelled against them with regards to corruption and misappropriation of funds. He was reacting to a report in the Sri Lankan newspaper on Monday that the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE), a government body to oversee financial discipline in public corporations, was prepared to summon the board on those grounds.”So far we have not heard from them [COPE] officially. I have also read the news report, and we are quite prepared to answer any questions, with regard to whatever charges they want to bring against us,” Ranatunga said. “We have been transparent in all that we have done and are quite prepared to co-operate with whoever is levelling charges against us.”Ranatunga also said that the media report that the Sri Lankan Supreme Court had ordered the board to hold elections within two months was incorrect. “What the Supreme Court has suggested is that both parties come to a settlement on the issue and report back to them within two months, possibly with a view to holding elections.”United Southern Cricket Club president Asoka Mendis had filed a fundamental rights petition against Sri Lanka Cricket last year, on the grounds that an interim committee – first instituted in 2005 – had been appointed by the Sports Minister without the prior approval of the member clubs, bypassing the democratic process of elections. The club wanted the Supreme Court to prevent the interim committee members from holding office and functioning until the hearing is over.

Can West Indies learn from India?

ESPNcricinfo previews the third ODI between West Indies and India in North Sound

The Preview by Abhishek Purohit10-Jun-2011Match factsSaturday, June 11, North Sound
Start time 0900 (1300 GMT)Virat Kohli continues to grow as a batsman with each game•Associated Press

Big PictureWest Indies with Chris Gayle are competitive at times. West Indies without Gayle have seemed as flat as a flawed artist who lost whatever little inspiration he had. The familiar script has played out: there have been few partnerships of substance, the precious few have been broken at the wrong time, and the house has collapsed in a heap. The bowlers have not been getting enough breakthroughs, when they have managed to, they haven’t been able to sustain any pressure. Like a closed loop, West Indies continue to stumble from one failure to another.Men placed in seemingly hopeless situations have no choice but to cling on to hope, and that is what Darren Sammy has been doing. After every loss, he puts on a brave face and undertakes an honest search for positives. When the execution is flawed, he talks about intent being there. He wants Ramnaresh Sarwan to play the role of a finisher; Sarwan’s strike-rate has remained stuck in the early 60s.Not that West Indies haven’t had their moments so far. Not often does one find them in a commanding position of 175 for 2 with 14 overs to go. Nor do they often have the opposition on the mat at four down with more than a 100 still needed. Such potential match-winning positions have been frittered away though, allowing an Indian side missing several regulars to be on the verge of their third ODI series win in four tours. While most attention has been focussed on West Indies’ woes, Suresh Raina’s side has efficiently chugged to three victories. The difference between the two teams has been India’s ability to shut the opposition out, something West Indies badly need to do. There were concerns before the tour began about how India would fare with their depleted squad, and so far, the bench has showed it has strength, albeit against a team ranked six places below them.Form guide (most recent first)West Indies: LLWWL
India: WWWWW
The spotlightNothing epitomises the spirit of this young Indian team better than the continuing growth of Virat Kohli. He realised he was risking throwing it all away, and has moulded himself into a batsman who is expected to bat through the innings and finish games. He did that in the previous match, also becoming the third-fastest Indian to 2000 ODI runs. The expectations will be the same tomorrow.Sammy reminded Ramnaresh Sarwan in Trinidad that he was once compared to Michael Bevan as a capable limited-overs finisher. Sarwan has done it on numerous occasions, like when he took West Indies to a thrilling win against India in 2002 with a last-ball boundary. The Sarwan of old was classy and combative. The runs are still coming, albeit a lot more slowly and the fight doesn’t seem to be there, especially when it is sorely needed in Gayle’s absence. Can the vintage Sarwan make a re-appearance?Team newsWest Indies made a couple of changes to the squad, resting Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul. Sammy said the pitch in Antigua would have more life in it, which makes the decision to rest Rampaul seem a little strange. Darren Bravo should return tomorrow, making it unlikely that Danza Hyatt will make his ODI debut.West Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Kirk Edwards, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Marlon Samuels, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell/Anthony Martin, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Carlton Baugh (wk), 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Devendra Bishoo. With Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth set to miss the Tests due to injuries, India would want to give Ishant Sharma a go during this series, considering there is no warm-up game before the next leg of the tour. Amit Mishra’s four wickets in the second ODI mean an in-form R Ashwin will continue to miss out.India (possible): 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 S Badrinath, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Suresh Raina (capt), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Munaf Patel.Stats and trivia In the previous ODI at the Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua, Darren Sammy smashed an unbeaten 58 off 24 balls at No. 9 against South Africa in 2010. It remains his highest ODI score.

Lancashire push their Ashes bid

Old Trafford’s future is much brighter after the Court of Appeal’s ruling to allow their development to go ahead, but Lancashire now face another crucial decision later this season

Old Trafford’s future is much brighter after the Court of Appeal’s ruling to allow their development to go ahead, but Lancashire now face another crucial decision later this season when the ECB allocate the remaining Ashes Tests for 2013.The club have made their submission to the board along with other interested counties and will make a presentation at Lord’s on August 2 before the final decision is reached by the Major Match Group in September. Now that approval has been given for the full-scale redevelopment of Old Trafford, the club are confident they can secure a match against Australia, who they last hosted in 2005.”We have talked about being a model Test match ground and we tick every box,” Jim Cumbes, the Lancashire chief executive, said. “I don’t think even Lord’s ticks every box.”Although the drawn-out legal process to gain permission to renovate has finally ended, there has been a fall-out for Lancashire as the funding from the North West Development Agency has been cut by £2million due to the delays in the commencement of work on the stadium. There was a fear the money would be withdrawn altogether which would have left the club with huge problems.”The delays created problem with funding; we lost £2m off our grant and nearly lost it all,” Cumbes said. “It was £7.2 million and they were going to take it all away, but we ended up convincing them that if we didn’t get the grant we couldn’t go ahead with the development so got it down to five million.”Four floodlights are now in place at the ground and the next stage of construction will be the new player and media facilities at the Brian Statham End. The whole project is due to be completed by April 2013, a few months before the club hope to host the Ashes Test. There is also the prospect of the naming rights to the ground being sold, although Cumbes said the Old Trafford brand would need to remain.Since the Court of Appeal judgement Lancashire have been inundated with messages of support from around the world. “I’ve been astonished by the support we’ve had,” Cumbes said. “New Zealand, Australia, India, Singapore on Tuesday.”For Cumbes himself it marks the end of a battle that has seen him delay his retirement by two years to help fight the legal battles, but he won’t be staying on to see the completion of the building work. “That’s me finished at the end of this year,” he said. “We’ve got to where we need to be.”

Luiz Gomes: 'O buraco no futebol brasileiro é o calendário'

– O calor do verão brasileiro?

E quanto maior o tempo perdido maior serão as consequências. Insistir nisso é viver no passado. É fazer do Brasil a vanguarda do atraso.
