Injuries combined with the pressures of captaincy may have inhibited his batting previously in the ODI-format, says Smith, and it’s something he hopes to set right in the upcoming season

Graeme Smith, South Africa’s Test captain, has decided what he wants to be when he grows up. A good friend (especially to AB de Villiers), a loving husband and a batsman. More specifically, a one-day batsman.”If I look at the record I have built up over the years, I am proud of it, but there is still a lot more to do,” Smith told ESPNcricinfo in Johannesburg, where he was attending a CSA sponsorship announcement. “The injuries that I’ve had have mostly affected the ODI format so I am focussing on that.”Since 2008, Smith has had six hand-related injuries, battling tennis elbow and an array of broken bones. Those ailments have kept him out of a significant number of one-day matches in recent times. In the first six years of his career, Smith played an average of 20.8 ODIs a year. That number has reduced to 11.75 over the last four years, including this one.In some ways, the most remarkable thing about that statistic is that Smith has been playing international cricket for a decade, eight years of which he has spent as captain. It’s a length of time that justifies thoughts of reinvention, something that Smith has been working on. He stepped down as Twenty20 captain in August last year and relinquished the one-day leadership after the 2011 World Cup, to give him more time to focus on batting.”Injuries, combined with the pressures of captaincy, may have inhibited my batting,” he said. “At the moment I am just concentrating on getting some confidence back. I know that I’ve never been the most elegant batter, but I’ve always had self-belief. I need to build up some confidence.”With his place in the ODI side no longer secure, Smith’s form in the shorter version of the game is under scrutiny and recent performances are not in his favour. His average of 28.25 in 2011 is a big step-down from his career average of 39.25, and is at its lowest since 2006. He has not scored an ODI century since 2009, when he made 141 in a losing cause against England during the Champions Trophy. He was also not able to clock up a half-century at the World Cup and his failure to return home with the rest of the squad at the end of March saw him heavily criticised by the South African public. He has since had a knee operation and has only been able to train for the past three weeks.”The World Cup was one of the darkest places I have been in my career,” he said. “I’ve had some time to press the reset button and I’m looking forward to the new season.” It will be a season of change, and freedom, for Smith, who will no longer feel the weight of the captain’s armband. “After being captain in all three formats, I can now focus on myself. It’s going to be a big season for me.”With expectation of a different sort hanging over him, Smith believes that in former opening batting partner, Gary Kirsten he will have an ideal mentor and challenger. “When we played together Gary and I had a deal that whoever scored more runs in the season would take the other one out for dinner. I always ended up paying for dinner,” he said jokingly. Kirsten can’t make deals like that anymore but he will “bring a lot of common sense to the side and will bring the best out of players”.Having basically grown up being the captain gave Smith the space to mature and develop while leading, an opportunity not a lot of people get. “When I started in the job, I was 22, and I didn’t have the experience in terms of relationships. I learnt how to allow each guy the space to grow and feel comfortable, and it helped having good guys around.”Now, Smith has to be that good guy, the one who will provide de Villiers with advice when needed and then back off at the right time. “I will always been an ally for him, but it’s important that he forges his own way,” Smith said. He believes that zoning in on his own game will allow de Villiers to have the space he needs to build a team that will have this ethos and that Smith will be able to fit into that as someone who will “score lots of runs,” for de Villiers.Smith remains South Africa’s Test captain and the coming series against Australia and Sri Lanka are foremost in his mind, as South Africa aim to challenge England for the No.1 ranking. “I see it as a season filled with prospects, in some ways similar to the 2008-09 season.” South Africa beat Australia in Australia for the first time then, getting one over the No.1 team in the world, although their ranking did not change. The over-riding image of that tour was Smith walking out to bat with a broken hand. Smith the batsman, the same one he wants to become now.

Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan struck a compelling century then marshalled his team neatly in the field to secure a 35-run victory over Australia
The Report by Daniel Brettig06-Aug-2011 Scorecard and ball-by-ball details There was both brute-force hitting and innovation in Tillakaratne Dilshan’s century•AFP
Sri Lanka’s captain Tillakaratne Dilshan struck a compelling century then marshalled his team neatly in the field to secure a 35-run victory over Australia in the first Twenty20 international in Kandy.Sent in to bat at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, the hosts were headed for a total of about 150 before Dilshan (104, 57 balls, 12 fours, five sixes) and the allrounder Jeevan Mendis (29, 19 balls) combined for a stand of 104 runs in a mere 45 balls to lift the hosts to 198 for 3. Dilshan hammered 67 from his final 23 deliveries, a sequence that effectively decided the match. The Australians’ chase was undone by the flat offspin of the debutant Dilruwan Perera (3-26), who provided a reminder there is plenty of slow bowling depth for the Sri Lankans to utilise across the limited overs and Test series to take place through August and September. Rangana Herath (1-11) also posed plenty of problems, much as he had done on his debut against the Australians on their 1999 visit to the island.Dilshan’s was exactly the kind of opening statement a captain desires to make, providing plenty of evidence the Australians will be up against a feisty opponent on this tour. They will also need to sharpen their fielding, as fumbles were a recurring theme of the team’s first international since a limited overs series in Bangladesh in April.Mitchell Johnson, John Hastings and Shane Watson were all taken for more than 11 runs per over, while curiously the spin of Steve O’Keefe and Steve Smith was not fully utilised despite offering a greater level of economy than any of the faster men.By contrast the Sri Lankans employed three spin bowlers in their defence of the target, and in truth no-one other than the belligerent David Warner (53) ever looked comfortable enough to impose serious pressure on the home attack.Needing 10 runs an over virtually from the start, Australia’s reply was inconvenienced by the early swing of Nuwan Kulasekara (2-39), who found a way through Watson in the third over. Warner was soon finding the boundary, and on one occasion cleared it with a line drive over the bowler’s head.Shaun Marsh was less settled, and misread the first over from the debutant Perera to be lbw for four. David Hussey appeared fortunate that no-one on the field was fully alert to an apparent thin edge behind off the bowling of Dhammika Prasad, but next over he was nowhere near a sharp off break from Perera that tilted middle stump.Cameron White managed only one boundary before he too was defeated by a Perera offbreak that straightened from around the wicket, and at 63 for 4 Australia’s chase was looking decidedly sick. It deteriorated further when Steven Smith was utterly confused by Herath and stumped, while Dilshan had the luxury of dropping Warner then being able to accept another chance. O’Keefe and Johnson provided nuisance value, but by then the equation would have been too steep even for Dilshan.Brett Lee had shared the new ball with the left-arm spinner O’Keefe in a nod to a surface that offered some bounce but also turn. Mahela Jayawardene managed a pair of crisp boundaries to long-on and backward point, but in the third over squirted a Lee yorker into his stumps.Dilshan immediately took the attack to Lee, following a top-edged hook for six with an artful glide through gully for four, meaning the over reaped 14 runs as well as a wicket. He then sought to unsettle Johnson with a series of impudent gestures. Dinesh Chandimal also made a bright start, but on 11 was hurried onto the back foot by Johnson’s pace and slid ungracefully into his wicket – only the fifth such dismissal in T20 internationals, its rarity underlined by the bowler’s miffed reaction.Tensions were evident between Dilshan and Watson, the Australian firing a return throw towards the batsman, who fended it away with a glove. A curious appeal by the Australians posed the question about obstruction, as the game’s laws have been changed to disallow any by a batsman out of his crease, but the umpires waved it away.Kumar Sangakkara cracked boundaries over mid-off and square leg to raise a 50 stand with Dilshan, but the next over he flicked ineffectually at a Watson slower ball and handed a simple catch to Cameron White. Mendis announced himself with a reverse-swept boundary from the bowling of Smith, then gave a passing impression of no less a left-hander than Sangakkara himself with a pull shot of some flourish when Watson dropped fractionally short.John Hastings’ slower balls were losing their novelty, and Dilshan took a heavy toll by swinging thrice to the legside for boundaries either side of an exceptionally cheeky reverse-dab past short third man – the over was worth 20.Mendis and Dilshan tormented the Australians in the closing overs, piling up 67 runs from overs 15-18 to turn a middling total into an intimidating one. Too often the touring bowlers missed the yorker length, and when they did strike it Dilshan’s wrists were supple enough to send the ball skidding through gully to the rope.On 84 when the final over began, Dilshan cracked a pair of sixes then mis-scooped a boundary to go to three figures, before adding another to take the Sri Lankans to the cusp of 200 – a total they would not have contemplated at 94-3. Australia’s bowlers, and batsmen, have the task ahead of them.

Tim Kimber rescued Guernsey from 65 for 7 to help them beat Malaysia in the final of the ICC World Cricket League Division Six
ESPNcricinfo staff24-Sep-2011After having won all their group matches it looked like Guernsey would be denied the ICC World Cricket League Division Six title by Malaysia but wicketkeeper Tim Kimber rescued them from 65 for 7 to help them reach the target of 209 in the final over of the match, at the Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur. Guernsey had beaten Malaysia at the same ground the day before the final by restricting them to 170. In the final, they allowed Malaysia to get 208 but would not have expected to lose so many wickets early on in their chase.Hammad Ullah Khan, who had top-scored for Malaysia with 53, picked up three early wickets with his seamers, and offspinner Nik Arifin got two. Kimber had only 11 runs to his name in the tournament up to the final but produced an unbeaten 82 off 92 balls to shock the hosts. He was assisted by David Hooper, who scored 45.”It feels simply brilliant to win today and to have been six or seven down and then see young Tom Kimber come out and guide us to victory with a fantastic knock of 82 not out,” Guernsey’s captain Stuart Le Prevost said after the win. Malaysia would not be too disappointed since by virtue of reaching the final they and Guernsey had already earned promotion to Division Five. “We need to work on our batting ahead of going to Singapore in February [for the Division Five tournament],” Malaysia captain Suhan Alagaratnam said. “We’ll take each game as it comes but I’d definitely like a chance to beat Guernsey next year in Division Five.
Kuwait and Jersey had both missed out on promotion because their net run-rate in the group stage was less than Malaysia’s. But they still had third-place to play for, and Kuwait beat Jersey by eight runs at the Selangor Turf Club. Jersey had looked on course to chase the target of 213 after Corey Bisson and Peter Gough had both reached half-centuries and put together 91 runs for the fourth wicket. But Gough’s dismissal sparked a collapse and Jersey went from 174 for 3 in the 45th over to being all out for 204. Seamer Mohammed Naseer ran through the tail and finished with 4 for 29.Kuwait’s innings had taken a different route: they had lost wickets early and were 63 for 6 before Mohammad Amin and Saad Khalid put together 70 for the seventh wicket with Khalid getting 50 off 38 balls. No. 10 Azmatullah Nazeer chipped in with 44 and though Kuwait were bowled out in 44.5 overs, their total of 212 proved enough.
Nigeria won their first match of the tournament, beating Fiji by 102 runs at the Bayuemas Oval to finish fifth. Nigeria’s spinners bowled Fiji out for 133 after their batsmen had managed a total of 235 through contributions from each of the top-order batsmen. Offspinner Varun Behani then picked up three wickets as just five Fiji batsmen made it to double figures.
