Pink ball to be used in QEA final

The Division One final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan’s first-class tournament, will be played with a pink ball, under floodlights, the Pakistan Cricket Board has said. The final of last year’s tournament was also held under floodlights but was played with an orange ball.Last year, the two teams in the final, Habib Bank Limited and Pakistan International Airlines, practised with both an orange and pink ball before the match. The decision to play with the orange ball was made after receiving inputs from both teams. This year, however, the PCB has decided to use the pink ball in the final, which will be played from December 20-24 at the National Stadium in Karachi, after receiving advice from the ICC.The QEA final will become part of ongoing trials to determine whether Test match cricket can be played under lights, and what ball will be most suited to a day-night Test match. Earlier this year a County Championship match between Kent and Glamorgan at Canterbury was played with a pink ball. The MCC versus Champion County match, which has been staged in Abu Dhabi for the last two seasons, has also been played under floodlights with the pink ball and the 2012 edition will be played under the same conditions.

Batsmen can adjust – Jayasuriya

Former Sri Lanka captain, Sanath Jayasuriya, has urged the country’s current crop of batsmen to take more responsibility on their tour of South Africa

Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya has urged the country’s current crop of batsmen to take more responsibility on their tour of South Africa. Sri Lanka lost the first Test at Centurion inside three days after being bowled out for under 200 in both innings and Jayasuriya expects them to regroup strongly.”They know what the expectations on them are and they know what responsibility they have,” Jayasuriya told ESPNCricinfo. “It’s high time two or three of them put some runs on the board.”Sri Lanka’s most difficult challenge appears to have stemmed from the South African conditions, which the locals are using to their advantage. Seamer-friendly surfaces with plenty of pace and bounce have turned the already dangerous Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander into cricket’s equivalent’s of fire-breathing dragons and it seems curators in Durban and Cape Town will not allow Sri Lanka’s batsmen any let up.The second Test, Kingsmead’s Boxing Day match, is expected to include another bowlers’ strip. Traditionally the pitch is bouncy and with rain forecast for all five days, there is also expected to be significant swing in the air. Doomsday is, once again, being predicted for Sri Lanka by everyone but Jayasuriya, who believes the batsmen have now spent long enough in South Africa to have acclimatised. “People say Sri Lankans can’t adjust to play in pacy and bouncy conditions but I think they can adjust. They are all experienced enough to do it.” Sri Lanka have played in both Benoni and Centurion so far, and this will be their first trip to the coast on this tour.Experience has also not served Sri Lanka well so far, with only one of their batsmen having scored a century in the country before. Hashan Tillakaratne’s hundred at Centurion in 2002 helped Sri Lanka put up a fight against South Africa and they came within three wickets of winning the Test.Jayasuriya himself, does not have a good record in South Africa. In six Test matches in the country, he scored 182 runs at an average of 15.16, although he did manage a half-century, also at Centurion, back in 1998.Sri Lanka’s saving grace may turn out to be that Durban has not been a happy hunting ground for South Africa recently and they have lost three consecutive Tests there against Australia, England and India, in the last three seasons. But if Sri Lanka hope to capitalise on that record their batsmen will have to turn in far more convincing performances.Batting consultant Marvan Atapattu has already said the top six are the “most experienced” batsmen Sri Lanka can put out there and the spotlight is on the country’s leading run to lead the way. Jayawardene has not scored a half-century outside of Sri Lanka in two years, with the last one being his 275 against India in Ahmedabad. His last score of over 50 outside of the subcontinent was in March 2008, when he scored 136 against West Indies in Guyana.Jayasuriya said that Jayawardene’s lean patch should come to an end soon. “It is a concern but he has played enough cricket to come out of these situations,” he said. “He is going through a bad time at the moment and it’s tough for a good player to go through. The run-out was disappointing.” Jayawardene was found short of his ground while attempting his 10,000th Test run in the second innings at Centurion and was dismissed for 15.The likeliest contender to turn Sri Lanka’s tour around is middle-order man Thilan Samaraweera, who was responsible for Sri Lanka’s highest score in the Centurion Test, a fairly fluent 36. He was one of Sri Lanka’s better performers on their tour of England, with two half-centuries and Jayasuriya pinpointed him as the man who should step up. “Twenties and 30s are not going to help the team,” Jayasuriya said. “He needs to continue from there so that the team as a whole can recover.”Jayasuriya’s advice to the rest of the line-up is the same as captain Tillakaratne Dilshan’s. “We have to play our natural game and not think of anything else,” Jayasuriya said. Dilshan was dismissed in the first innings playing an across-the-line hoick, a shot that could easily have been mistaken for a Twenty20 stroke and Jayasuriya was quick to say that he did not advocate that kind of looseness. “We also have to still manage to adjust to bat for long periods of time.”Sri Lanka’s batting failures have diverted criticism off the team’s bowlers – who were talked of as an attack that would struggle to take 20 wickets. With little to bowl at, they have not been able to dispute that theory yet and Jayasuriya sympathised with the fortunes of the attack so far. “We can’t blame the bowlers,” he said. “Many of them are not experienced enough. They are just trying to do the basics and bowl in the right areas in those conditions.”

'We were ten out of ten' – Oram

Jacob Oram, the New Zealand allrounder, has given his team a “ten out of ten” rating for their 141-run victory against Zimbabwe in the second ODI at Cobham Oval, Whangarei

Jacob Oram, the New Zealand allrounder, has given his team a “ten out of ten” rating for their 141-run victory against Zimbabwe in the second ODI at Cobham Oval, Whangarei. The result followed a 90-run win in the first match in Dunedin and gave New Zealand the series 2-0 with one game to play.”Dunedin, we were maybe six out of ten. Today we were ten out of ten … the beauty of today is that we didn’t scrape through with a patchy, scratchy performance like we had in Dunedin,” Oram said. “Today was really professional. We just have to nail them [Zimbabwe] again because next week it’s the big fish from South Africa.”Oram played an important role in his team’s commanding performance, scoring 59 off 28 balls to build a platform from which New Zealand reached 372 for 6. He launched his attack on Zimbabwe from No. 3, a position he hasn’t batted at for nearly a decade. Oram said the decision to go up the order was a tactical one.”It was to take advantage of the wind blowing across to the short boundary and to take the Powerplay straight away,” Oram said. “It was not exactly six and out but it was to have some fun and see how we go. I haven’t scored the amount of runs that I would like to. I understand the reasons for that. Today was really nice, you only hit a few out of the middle and you remember the feeling again.”New Zealand took the batting Powerplay in the 25th over, two balls after Oram came to the middle, and scored 44 for 0 in the five-over block. It boosted the home team from 132 for 1 to 176 for 1 by the 29th over.”The start that we had was so good, it gave us an opportunity where we could put them [Zimbabwe] away tactically as well,” Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, said when asked about Oram’s promotion and the timing of the batting Powerplay. “It gave Jacob an opportunity to get into the game with the bat, which he hasn’t been able to do for a while.”All the stars kind of aligned and, with the short boundary on the left-hander’s side and the wind going way, it felt like the right option. And with being able to take the Powerplay at that time again, we felt like we might be able to get their seamers back early. If not, we felt Jacob would be able to tear into their spinners.”Oram aside, New Zealand’s innings was anchored and powered by Rob Nicol, who scored 146 off 134 balls before falling in the 49th over. It was his second hundred in five ODIs and McCullum called it “sublime”.”To have been able to play the role that he [Nicol] did, with the way Martin was going at the start, and to be able to get Martin on strike and read the situation as well he did. Once Martin left, he worked well with Jacob and then kicked on from there. It was a brilliant innings. It was Rob’s second hundred in not many games and it’s shown his ability to step up from domestic cricket. He has a real presence on the international stage so very excited for him.”We asked a lot of the team after Dunedin. We won ugly down there. But to come up today, start as well as we did. We were brilliant with the ball too under some interesting circumstances.”Zimbabwe were reduced to 17 for 3 in their chase and, after their captain Brendan Taylor fell, they appeared to focus on batting through the 50 overs instead of trying to win. They finished on 231 for 8.”It’s tough from Zimbabwe’s point of view. They are obviously low on confidence and looking to spend some time in the middle,” McCullum said. “Once they lost Brendan Taylor, I felt they were pretty set on trying to bat the 50 overs and I guess they achieved that, but it was pretty hard to take 10 wickets on that wicket with that sort of mentality. I wouldn’t begrudge our bowlers for their efforts in trying to knock over our opposition.”The second ODI was the first international match played at the Cobham Oval in Whangarei, and Oram said the pitch was “outstanding”.”Right up there with some of the best I have played on in New Zealand. It actually looked like a Napier wicket and it played like a Napier wicket. It had bounce and pace. You could just hook through the line. You enjoyed bowling on it, because it gave you a little bit of bounce. If you bent your back, there was something to be had.”New Zealand have already won the series and have a chance to complete a 3-0 sweep in Napier on February 9.

Jorginho lamenta derrota do Vasco e diz: 'Está faltando o arremate final'

Misbah hits out at captaincy critics

Misbah-ul-Haq has led an impassioned defence of his captaincy and urged the media not to destabilise Pakistan cricket by pursuing “their own agendas”

George Dobell in Dubai24-Feb-2012

Despite plenty of success, Misbah-ul-Haq has had to fend off questions about his captaincy of Pakistan•Getty Images

Misbah-ul-Haq has led an impassioned defence of his captaincy and urged the media not to destabilise Pakistan cricket by pursuing “their own agendas”.What should have been a moment of celebration for Misbah and his team was soured when Pakistan’s captain was asked about his own position in the press conference following victory over England in the first of three Twenty20 internationals. It is not hard to understand why Misbah might have been irritated. He assumed the captaincy of Pakistan in late 2010 with the team disgraced and defeated. Not only that, but he was denied some of the nation’s best players due to their involvement in the spot-fixing controversy. He responded better than most could have dreamed possible. Not only did Misbah restore the good reputation of Pakistan cricket on the pitch, he has done so off it, too.He has led Pakistan to five Test series victories out of seven – the other two series were drawn – including the recent 3-0 whitewash of England, the No. 1-ranked Test team. On Thursday he led Pakistan to victory over the No.1-rated T20 team in world cricket and afterwards vented his frustration at the media – and the Pakistan media in particular – who seem to want Shahid Afridi restored as captain.”Even after when we won the Test matches, I continuously told the media we should be patient and consider the realities,” Misbah said. “We go on to discuss things that don’t need to be discussed – when we perform badly we should talk about that, we should talk about weak areas in the team. People in the media make comments based on furthering their own agendas, not ground realities. This needs to stop; the media should think positively.”I won’t comment on any specific individuals, but you can hear it yourself when you listen to the reports in the media. I also say even after winning we shouldn’t go overboard – we should base such discussions on facts. Appreciate the attributes in the team which are to be admired – even after winning, pinpoint specific mistakes – if a player isn’t making centuries, or a bowler is not taking wickets, then discuss those points.”What we shouldn’t do is start speaking ill of individuals. As a team we lost the ODI series: don’t blame one player or just the captain. The dramatic changes highlighted are unnecessary. It is these players that have won you six series. If we made mistakes and lost a series against a top team, then we should be backed. If the proposed changes highlighted by the media were implemented, we would have six captains and six different teams up to the World Cup in 2015.”We cannot improve if we continuously ask for captains and teams to be replaced after losing one series. You have to back your players at a certain level.”Misbah’s real problem – and it is a problem without a solution – is that he is not Afridi. The populist adoration for Afridi – for his charisma, his talent and his aura – is boundless. Misbah, with his more prosaic qualities of reliability, calm and consistency, is overshadowed by comparison. While logic might back Misbah, emotions are with Afridi. When Afridi drops a batting glove a nation stoops to pick it up. When Afridi fails with the bat – and, unpalatable though it will be to Pakistan supporters, he fails with the bat rather too often – a nation mourns his ill fortune. When Misbah scores 50, a nation frowns upon the slow pace at which he scored it. Misbah could invent a cure for cancer and someone will claim that Afridi would have done it with more panache.Afridi is a cricketer – a man, even – of immense charm. He is a magnificent limited-overs bowler, a courageous fielder and a batsman who has, upon occasions, dazzled. But he was fired as limited-overs skipper in May 2011 after returning early from the tour of the Caribbean and following the disintegration of his relationship with Waqar Younis, the coach at the time. His record as captain is also modest: Afridi has captained Pakistan in one Test, 34 ODIs and 19 T20Is. The Test was lost, as were 11 of the T20Is, though he led his side to 18 wins in ODI cricket.Compare that with Misbah’s record as captain. He has led in 15 Tests (nine wins, five draws and just that one loss against the West Indies), 19 ODIs (14 wins and five losses) and six T20Is (all of which have been won). In the light of such figures, it is somewhat bewildering that Misbah is obliged to continually defend his position.Misbah was frank about Pakistan’s greatest weakness: the fielding of his side remains poor. He warned there will be no short-term solutions, but suggested with the bowling attack he has at his disposal, Pakistan will always be capable of success. Afridi, Umar Gul and Saeed Ajmal are the top three wicket-takers in the history of T20Is and Misbah felt it was Gul’s bowling that made the difference on Thursday.”It’s a natural phenomenon,” he said. “We don’t focus on fitness and fielding at grass roots level. Our fielding is much improved from before, but we have to put in a lot of effort to improve. It’s not a problem that can be solved overnight.”When you have Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi, three of the top bowlers in T20 cricket, top wicket takers, you always have a chance. They bowled well and kept the pressure on. When a bowler is at his best it’s difficult to play him. Gul bowled well. There was no answer to his bowling.”The win was important considering the situation in which we were in. The senior players had to perform and Umar Gul’s return to form was necessary. Shoaib Malik showing form was also important. It was a much-needed win to bring our confidence back.”
