'Want to be India's go-to bowler' – Irfan

Allrounder Irfan Pathan, who was picked in India’s squad on Saturday for the Champions Trophy, has said he is keen on taking on more “responsibility” in the team

Irfan Pathan: “A lot of people were talking about my ‘comeback’, but most people forget that my last ODI before I left due to an injury was a Man-of-the-Match performance”•AFP

Allrounder Irfan Pathan, who was picked in India’s squad on Saturday for the Champions Trophy, has said he is keen on taking on more “responsibility” in the team. Irfan last played for India at the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, before picking up a hamstring injury in the Ranji Trophy that kept him out of the home season. Irfan pointed out that he was in good touch in the last ODI series he played before the injury break, and so was confident of being named in the squad.”A lot of people were talking about my ‘comeback’, but most people forget that my last ODI before I left due to an injury was a Man-of-the-Match performance. I had taken a five-for in India’s victory against Sri Lanka in 2012,” Irfan told the IPL site. “People have a very short memory about performances, but I was always confident that I would get into the ODI squad for India.”Now I want to take up more and more responsibility. I want to bowl in a lot of tough situations and I want to make sure that I am the go-to bowler for the captain.”India had won that one-day series in Sri Lanka in July-August 4-1, and Irfan had by far the best record among the bowlers, with eight wickets at 26.37. Apart from part-timer Manoj Tiwary, none of the other India bowler managed an average below 39.While he is looking forward to the helpful conditions in England, Irfan said he will not get carried away but focus on accuracy. “Any bowler would love to go and bowl in England were the wickets are friendly for the fast bowlers. But it is easier said than done. One has to make sure you ‘bowl’, rather than just releasing the ball from your hand.”Bowling in the right areas is very important. If you bowl consistently in the right areas, more often than not wickets will come your way. No matter how good the bowler is, how quick the bowler is or how lethal he is with swing, bowling in the right areas is of prime concern. That will be my focus in the games to come.”Irfan is one of five pace bowlers in the squad, alongside Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Vinay Kumar. That would mean a lot of competition among the seamers to make the XI, but he is not concerned about that at the moment Irfan said: “Frankly, I am not worried about it. I know it will depend on the team combinations at the end of the day. My mission is to do well in the tournament. I will start working towards it from the moment we land there in England. I want to make the most of whatever preparations we get there and be completely ready before ball one.”I have worked really hard on my fitness and my game. I have tremendous self-belief that I am only going to get better from here. I feel the next few years are going to be my years in cricket.”

Ponting to retire from all cricket

Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain and one of the greatest batsmen of the modern age, will retire from all cricket in October. The 38-year-old is currently in England playing county cricket for Surrey but he has said that the Champions League T20 campaign with Mumbai Indians, winners of this year’s IPL, will be his last competitive outing.”While I’m enjoying my cricket as much as ever, it just feels like the right time to finish playing,” Ponting told the . “My body and mind are in great shape and I know I’m going to really enjoy these last few months before the next stage of life begins.”Ponting announced his Test retirement during Australia’s home series against South Africa last year, making a farewell appearance in the defeat at Perth. In 168 Test matches he amassed 13378 runs, second only to Sachin Tendulkar, as well as 13704 runs in ODIs, winning three World Cups, two as captain. In what has turned out to be his final season in Australia, Ponting helped Tasmania to victory in the Sheffield Shield – and finished as the competition’s leading run-scorer – before heading to the IPL. He is scheduled to leave Surrey in July and take part in the inaugural Caribbean Premier League, with the Antigua Hawksbills.”To win the Sheffield Shield with Tasmania in my last game in Australia played at Blundstone Arena, will forever be a memory close to my heart. It’s one of a lifetime of memories that will become even more special to me in retirement,” he said. “I’m so grateful for the opportunities that the game of cricket has given to me. I’ve played with so many outstanding people at all levels of cricket with lifelong friendships made.”Although Ponting struggled in his final Test series, accumulating just 32 runs in three matches against South Africa, uncertainty about Australia’s batting line-up ahead of the Ashes had led to talk of a possible recall. Ponting appeared to encourage such speculation shortly after arriving in England to join up with Surrey – “I would never say never,” he said in a newspaper interview – but he later clarified that he would not be coming out of retirement. He did however make a return to the dressing room to offer support as Australia went out of the Champions Trophy with defeat to Sri Lanka at The Oval on Monday. He made 192 on his first-class debut for Surrey last month, proving his continued appetite for making big scores, but it will be in T20 cricket that he makes his final bow. He is one of the marquee signings for the CPL and will be expected to play his last innings in the blue of Mumbai, despite dropping himself from the team and handing over the captaincy to Rohit Sharma during their run to the IPL title. He will then begin life as a retired professional cricketer, with promoting an autobiography the first job on his list. Ponting said he was looking forward to spending more time with his wife, Rianna, and their two daughters, as well as working with their cancer fundraising charity.”I’m considering a couple of options in the cricket media and I’m very fortunate to have a wonderful group of commercial partners that I will be continuing to work with,” he said. “My autobiography comes out in late October so I’ve also got a couple of busy months on my book tour when I get back. I got a taste for the off field demands of coaching, mentoring and leadership at Mumbai. I’d like to do more of this in the future.”I’m excited about what lies ahead. We are moving to Melbourne, which will be like a new beginning as a family leading a more normal life. I’ll be able to spend more time with family and friends, play a lot more golf and see more of North Melbourne footy games.”Rianna and I will continue to build the work of the Ponting Foundation and, with more time on my hands, I’m intending on spending more time with children with cancer and their families.”

New Zealand’s contract list has undergone a significant shake-up for 2013-14, with eight changes from last year’s group. Tom Latham, Corey Anderson, Bruce Martin, Mitchell McClenaghan, Colin Munro and Hamish Rutherford have all been contracted for the first time, while Peter Fulton and Grant Elliott have returned to the list after missing out for the past couple of seasons.James Franklin, Daniel Flynn, Andrew Ellis, Tarun Nathula, Rob Nicol and Kruger van Wyk have all missed out from last year’s group of contracted players, along with Jacob Oram, who was replaced during the year by Neil Wagner. Also gone from the list are the newly-retired Chris Martin and the veteran Daniel Vettori, who turned down a contract due to uncertainty over his recovery from surgery on his Achilles tendon. There was no room for Andrew Ellis, Luke Ronchi, Adam Milne, Ian Butler or Jeetan Patel. Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, said the 20 players who received deals were those most likely to feature for the team over the next 12 months, which includes tours of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and West Indies, along with home series against India and West Indies.”There’s still a strong core of experienced players who have been a part of the team’s progression over recent months,” Hesson said. “Some of the younger players such as Corey Anderson and Hamish Rutherford have also demanded a spot, after making strong starts to their international careers.”As always, some difficult decisions had to be made and a number of last year’s contracted players will be disappointed to have missed out. However, there’s nothing to say that they can’t force their way back into the team in the future through strong domestic performances.”Contracted players Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Dean Brownlie, Grant Elliott, Peter Fulton, Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Bruce Martin, Mitchell McClenaghan, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Colin Munro, Hamish Rutherford, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.

Fora do Choque-Rei, Bruno Alves exalta evolução do São Paulo

ScorecardA clinical performance from the South Africa A seamers, led by 23 year-old Beuran Hendricks’ seventh five-wicket haul, routed Australia A for 146 in the first innings of the second unofficial Test in Rustenberg. Dean Elgar followed up his double century from the previous match with a composed 83 to put South Africa A in the lead by the end of day one.Captain Aaron Finch, though, having called correctly at the toss, joined Alex Doolan in bagging a duck. Nic Maddinson arrived with the score still five and counterattacked. His stroke-filled 88 included 11 fours and three sixes, but he received no support at the other end, with two more ducks, from Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Coulter-Nile, and Chadd Sayers’s 22 being the second-highest score. Hendricks’ 5 for 52 went along with Kyle Abbott and Marchant de Lange who took two and three wickets respectively to bowl out Australia A.South Africa A’s start was opposite as openers Elgar and Reeza Hendricks put on 104 runs together. Elgar was approaching his century before Coulter-Nile had him caught by Pat Cummins, but not before he had set up his side in a strong position.

O meio-campista tende a iniciar o jogo desta terça-feira, contra o Melgar, do Peru.
