Scotland crushed by Elliott, Watling tons

Hundreds from Grant Elliott and BJ Watling powered New Zealand A to a comprehensive victory in Ayr, as Scotland, without a number of their top-order batsmen, succumbed in the first of three matches.Scotland had started well with the ball but lost the plot at the back end of the innings, conceding nearly 150 runs in the last ten overs as Watling and Elliott piled on the misery. In reply the home side never threatened, with only Richie Berrington and David Murphy displaying any fluency with the bat.Without eight regulars due to injury and county commitments, including captain Kyle Coetzer, Scotland were forced to field a weakened side, handing a debut to 21-year-old Gordon Munsey; by contrast, the New Zealand A side featured six players with Test match experience.Having won his first toss as Scotland captain, Matt Machan would have been delighted with the way his bowlers started, removing both openers inside the first ten, including in-form Hamish RutherfordAfter the seamers’ hard work, it was the introduction of spin from the Cottage End that broke the third-wicket partnership, when Dean Brownlie chopped the third ball of Majid Haq’s first over on to his leg stump; seam struck an over later when Evans trapped Daryl Mitchell lbw to leave New Zealand A 92 for 4.However, as the sun and stiff breeze dried the pitch, batting got easier and easier. Both Machan and Michael Leask were deposited over the boundary by Colin de Grandhomme, and had he not missed a straight one off Haq the No. 6 might have caused some real damage. But for Scotland, the worst was yet to come.Once Elliott reached an obdurate fifty, he accelerated alongside Watling, who batted with total ease. Their partnership was eventually worth 185 from 19 overs. Elliott scored his second half-century off 26 balls, while Watling’s second came off just 13, as they battered Safyaan Sharif’s final three overs for 57 runs. Still 20 short of his hundred, Watling mistimed the ball over mid-off but Machan, running back, never quite settled under it; the drop seemed inevitable, as did defeat even at that point. If Scotland’s bowling was ultimately sub-par, their batting was dire. From the moment Hamish Gardiner became the first of Matt Henry’s four victims, Scotland never looked like threatening the target of 348. There were bright patches for Grant Bradburn, Scotland’s coach, to focus on: Munsey looked at ease with the pace and bite of the attack until he played a loose drive and Berrington once again showed form with the bat, although by the time he got into his groove the game was well done. In truth, it had the feel of a square practice for both sides after Henry and Scott Kuggeleijn blew away the top order.”The first 35 overs, we bowled well, we fielded well, and then we let it get away from us,” Bradburn said. “We’ve got a lot of high-level cricket between now and the World Cup, and we have to try and improve those skills, and try and be comfortable chasing. At the moment, we’re more comfortable setting than chasing, and we have to be able to do both. We have the skills to go out and chase big scores, but what we need is the belief.”

Brathwaite century puts West Indies in command

Kraigg Brathwaite’s quintessential Test innings, an unbeaten 123, directed West Indies towards early control of the first Test against Bangladesh at Arnos Vale

The Report by Mohammad Isam05-Sep-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe late cut was a productive shot for Kraigg Brathwaite during his unbeaten innings of 123•WICB Media

Kraigg Brathwaite’s quintessential Test innings, an unbeaten 123, directed West Indies towards early control of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Arnos Vale. A third rain break at exactly 5.00pm ended the first day’s play with West Indies 264 for 3.It was Brathwaite’s second century in the last three Tests, after his maiden Test hundred against New Zealand in Port-of-Spain in June. Despite the fact that he had not played much cricket since the series against New Zealand, Brathwaite maintained rigorous focus.West Indies lost a late wicket when Darren Bravo got out for 62 off 126 balls, just two overs before play was called off, getting too impish for his own good. He struck Taijul Islam for two consecutive fours over mid-off towards the end of the day but he tried to repeat the shot even after the bowler changed his angle and bowled around the wicket, resulting in a catch to Mahmudullah at mid-off.But that was one of the few bright moments for Bangladesh on a day when they picked only three specialist bowlers and put West Indies in to bat on what looked like, and later proved to be, excellent batting conditions. It was enough encouragement for Brathwaite, who hardly dithered from his known and trusted method.Brathwaite let Chris Gayle do all the scoring at first, before reaching his fifty in the second session. West Indies lost two wickets quickly but Brathwaite remained unfazed, again letting his partner, Bravo, get the boundaries. Brathwaite went after only those deliveries that were too wide or two full or both, and hardly anything troubled him, except a few missed flashes and the odd ball from Rubel Hossain that jumped. When the opener hung back on his backfoot, the bowlers didn’t bowl full enough, and Al-Amin didn’t make him play enough, bowling a one-day line wide outside off stump.’Pitch played quite well’ – Brathwaite

Kraigg Brathwaite’s second Test century helped West Indies to a position of strength after the first day against Bangladesh in St Vincent. The batsman, who now has two hundreds in his last three Tests, said the pitch was easier to bat on compared to the track at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, where he got his first hundred against New Zealand.
“After lunch, I found the pitch was holding up a little more against the spin, so I knew I had to get through that period and things would get easier,” Brathwaite said. “Here, early on, I got the boundaries a little earlier than in Trinidad. The two pacers in New Zealand made things a little difficult but here it was a lot easier. The pitch played quite well. That was the only major difference.”
Brathwaite also credited his opening partner Chris Gayle, whose brisk strokeplay allowed the batsman to settle down early on.
“The pitch was good at the start, the ball came on,” he said. “Obviously as time went on, the ball started to slow up a little more, it was a little difficult. But batting with Chris takes the pressure off you and you just got to keep patient.”

Brathwaite reached his century off 219 balls, having struck eight boundaries at that point. He reached the three-figure mark through a full toss offered to him by Mahmudullah, which he slapped past cover for a boundary. This was reward for his patience. He was further rewarded on 113 when Mushfiqur dropped him off Shuvagata Hom when he got one to go with the around-the-wicket angle and kiss his outside edge. Some credit was also due to the Bangladesh bowlers, especially the two newcomers. Taijul, the left-arm spinner, and Shuvagata, the offspinning allrounder, became the 72nd and 73rd Test players for the country, and they had an eventful first day.The pair bowled the majority of the overs, picking up all three wickets. They looked lost at first, but soon they discovered the rewards of bowling proactively. They stuck to trusted lines, and gradually began to bowl like they would in domestic cricket.Gayle’s wicket was Bangladesh’s first success of the match. Having made 61 before lunch, he added just three runs off 21 balls after the break, with the two newcomers muffling his strokeplay. Both attacked his off stump, either spinning in or leaving him slightly. Eventually he missed a sweep off Shuvagata, but umpire Marais Erasmus denied the loud appeal.Mushfiqur took an extra second to call for the review, but it looked straight and the replays confirmed it had pitched in line, struck Gayle’s front pad in front of the stumps and was going on to hit middle stump.Gayle had played very well in the first session, reaching his fifty off 60 balls. He threaded the off-side field well, taking every chance to pick up runs as his opening partner remained circumspect. He struck most of his boundaries in front of the wicket, and got to his 37th fifty with a six over wide mid-on off Taijul. He survived two chances in the first session: a run-out appeal that had him just reach the bowlers’ end to complete a second run. Just after reaching 50, Gayle was dropped by Rubel Hossain off his own bowling. After Shuvagata dismissed Gayle, it was Taijul’s turn to take his first Test wicket. Kirk Edwards, batting at No 3 and under a bit of pressure after two low scores in the ODI series, attacked from the onset. He quickly got to 10 with a four and a straight six, but Taijul continued to toss the ball up, and took his leading edge in the 43rd over as he looked to work the ball against the turn. Mominul Haque took a sharp catch at silly mid-off, making it 133 for 2.Brathwaite and Bravo added 128 for the third wicket, with very few deliveries threatening them. There was one from Rubel that reared at Brathwaite but he looked unbeatable outside the off stump. With the inexperienced attack fading in the final session, he got plenty of bad balls to get to his second Test century. Taijul started bowling short and Shuvagata gave away three full-tosses in his 19th over.Mushfiqur would have wanted Rubel to bowl better too, with his preferred older ball. But apart from dropping Gayle and the odd good spell, his efforts never looked like they would get him a wicket. Bangladesh would have also liked Mahmudullah to bowl a lot better, but he went at over six an over and Mushfiqur could only get five overs out of his senior offspinner.

Rare favourites tag for Bangladesh

While it’s a chance for Mushfiqur Rahim to turn around his fortunes as the captain, for Zimbabwe it is yet another opportunity to give a good account of themselves

The Preview by Mohammad Isam24-Oct-2014

The return of Shakib Al Hasan will be a big boost for Bangladesh•AFP

Match factsOctober 25-29, 2014
Start time 0930 local, 0330 GMTBig PictureTen months into 2014 and Zimbabwe will only play their second Test of the year. Brendan Taylor will lead out a team full of spunk, something that Michael Clarke’s Australia would vouch for after losing to them in an ODI recently.Zimbabwe’s opponents have been starving for a noteworthy win for the last 12 months. Bangladesh’s last significant performance was drawing both Tests against New Zealand and beating them 3-0 in the ODIs in October last year. The bleak period has brought upon a lot of negativity, but against Zimbabwe, their nearest rivals, a change in attitude and better results are expected. For Mushfiqur Rahim, this is a chance to turn his fortunes around as the captain. He has been one of the in-form batsmen, but the perception is that the 12 ODI losses have undermined his captaincy. The BCB’s decision to replace him as ODI captain with Mashrafe Mortaza can be a blessing in disguise for Mushfiqur, as it will mean leaving aside one extra burden. His wicketkeeping has also come under scrutiny. In contests where the team making less mistakes will most likely be on the winning side, his alertness behind the stumps will be important for Bangladesh. For Zimbabwe, it is yet another opportunity to give a good account of themselves in Tests. They have a longer opportunity this time, having a three-Test series after more than a decade, but a lot will depend on how they start with the bat and ball. The top order will be asked to provide more than forties and fifties while Taylor will have to anchor the innings. Their lower middle order has troubled Bangladesh in the past, and though it is an area of batting that often goes unnoticed, Zimbabwe can hit the home side hard. The return of Shakib Al Hasan for Bangladesh, after serving a truncated suspension, could ultimately make the difference between the two sides. But that would also depend on how much time the allrounder would need to adjust to international cricket, having not played much since June.Form guideBangladesh LLDLD
Zimbabwe LWLLWIn the spotlightMominul Haque is Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in Tests this year, and was one of the few performers in West Indies last month. He will be expected to take control of the game from his No. 4 position and make sure he supports the more senior batsmen in the top and middle order.Zimbabwe’s batting too depends a lot on their No. 4. Brendan Taylor made 93 in the team’s last Test, against South Africa. He is Zimbabwe’s highest scorer against Bangladesh and made a big impact with the bat in the Test series last year.Team newsMarshall Ayub is expected to replace Imrul Kayes at No. 3 while Shakib Al Hasan will be an automatic choice in the middle order. The tricky part would be to choose between the inexperienced Jubair Hossain, the specialist legspinner, and Shuvagata Hom, who would add some batting and a bit of bowling strength.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Shamsur Rahman, 3 Marshall Ayub, 4 Mominul Haque, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Shuvagata Hom/Jubair Hossain, 9 Shafiul Islam, 10 Al-Amin Hossain, 11 Taijul IslamCoach Stephen Mangongo has hinted that out of the three young spinners, Wellington Masakadza could make his Test debut. They might have to make a choice between Tinashe Panyangara and Elton Chigumbura – whether to pick an out-and-out seamer or a seaming allrounder who can change the pace of the game.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Sikandar Raza, 4 Brendan Taylor (capt), 5 Regis Chakabva, 6 Craig Ervine, 7 Richmond Mutumbami (wk), 8 Tinashe Panyangara/Elton Chigumbura, 9 John Nyumbu, 10 Wellington Masakadza, 11 Tendai ChataraPitch and conditionsThe last Test played at this venue, between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in January this year, produced the fastest scoring rate at this ground. Mirpur has generally favoured the batsmen and has a reputation of holding up similar pace and even bounce till the fourth day.Stats and trivia Only five members of the Zimbabwe touring contingent have played Tests in Bangladesh, in 2005. Four are current players while Douglas Hondo is in the coaching staff. None of the Bangladesh players from the last Test between the two sides in the country are in the current team. This is the first time DRS will be used in BangladeshQuotes”It has been good to look at the home team practising and meet so many people. Many many more to meet and I am looking forward to a good series against Zimbabwe, the old enemy.”

A questão é buscar, rodada a rodada, melhorar.

McDonald tasked with reviving Leicestershire

Leicestershire’s management restructuring has continued with the appointment of Andrew McDonald as head coach

Leicestershire’s management restructuring has continued with the appointment of Andrew McDonald as head coach. McDonald, who played for Leicestershire in 2010 and 2011 and was capped four times by Australia, is still currently a regular member of the South Australia side but is unlikely to be pressed into playing at Grace Road, with compatriot Clint McKay filling the overseas slot next season.McDonald’s name had been linked with the job for some time and his arrival follows that of Wasim Khan as chief executive, with a mandate to reinvigorate the club. Leicestershire finished bottom of Division Two for the second season running and have not won in the Championship since 2012, the worst run by a county since the 1930s.A thin squad has been further depleted by the departures of Shiv Thakor, Josh Cobb, Nathan Buck and Greg Smith – though Ned Eckersley, Matthew Boyce and Charlie Shreck have signed new contracts. Of McDonald’s team-mates during Leicestershire’s victorious FLt20 campaign in 2011, only Boyce and Jigar Naik remain.”I developed a relationship at Leicestershire as a player and the opportunity to return in the role of Head Coach is one I am looking forward to,” McDonald said. “To take on the challenge of creating a successful, but also importantly sustainable cricket programme, while fostering the development of an emerging group of young players, is an extremely exciting prospect for me.”Coaching has always been something I have harboured ambitions to pursue. I think that going into coaching at a relatively young age, while still involved in cricket in the way I am in Australia as a player, is a very progressive move for both myself and Leicestershire.”McDonald succeeds Phil Whitticase, who was removed as director of cricket last month but remains with the club for the time being. Leicestershire’s interim chief executive, Andrew Boyce, praised McDonald as the “epitome of Australian grit” and someone with “a strong mental attitude to winning games”. Leicestershire fans are unlikely to have forgotten his record as the club’s leading run-scorer in their unexpected FLt20 success.”Andrew was a great influence on the younger lads as a player here,” Boyce said. “He helped us to get over the line on numerous occasions. Andrew was a good performer on the pitch and a very good person to have in the dressing room. When somebody is able to have time to make decisions in the cauldron environment in T20, you know you have a clear thinker. Andrew has always been able to make an assessment of what is required to win a game and never panics.”Andrew is currently playing a key role at South Australia and has lots of experience in the Big Bash. His fellow Australians look up to him and respect him. That says a lot about his character and standing in the game.”
