SA motivator Horn hints at politics in team selection

Mike Horn has become the first insider from the South African camp to corroborate the reports of interference in team selection for the 2015 World Cup semi-final

Moonda: Allegations unfair to Philander

Mike Horn has become the first insider from the South African camp to corroborate the reports of interference in team selection for the 2015 World Cup semi-final. Horn, who was with the squad as a consultant during the tournament, told journalists at the Laureus Sports Awards in Shanghai that politics “had a role to play” in the selection of the team that took the field against New Zealand.Cricket South Africa have not commented, nor have members of the team and coaching staff, but South Africa’s sports minister Fikile Mbalula called Horn “mischievous” in a radio interview.Horn, who has worked with South Africa before and whom many players consider a friend, made the allegations after weeks of speculation in the South African media that Vernon Philander was included in the semi-final XI at the behest of the board and against the wishes of the captain and coach, who both wanted an unchanged side from the one that won the quarter-final. “We’re not going into any politics, but it had a role to play,” Horn said. “I had to give a talk to the guys after the team was selected. A little bit of energy was taken away from the quarter-finals, where the right team played.”The only change South Africa made to their side for the semi-final was including Philander in place of Kyle Abbott. Philander would have played the quarter-final as well but was struggling with a hamstring injury that also affected his participation in the group stage of the tournament.Every time Philander missed a game – against Ireland, West Indies and Pakistan – the team management made it clear he would be brought back into the XI as soon as he was fit and cited his ability to exploit conditions and move the ball off the seam as the reason. However, numerous sources close to the team and selectors suggested to ESPNcricinfo that Philander was also required to fulfill what they have termed an “unofficial quota”, which requires including at least four players of colour in the South African side. This is not strictly adhered to – there were four occasions at the World Cup in which South Africa fielded only three players of colour – but is expected to apply more often than not. The selectors were aware of the requirement. After the selectors, together with the coach and captain, select an XI, the team must be vetted by CSA’s CEO, president and the transformation committee, although it is not always possible for all three to cast their eye over the final list.Vernon Philander’s inclusion was the only change made to the South African side for the semi-final against New Zealand•Getty Images

Teams are usually selected the evening before a game and an insider told ESPNcricinfo that was the case ahead of the semi-final as well. “The team was selected the night before the game and Philander’s name was on it. The instruction was given before that,” the source said.CSA’s CEO Haroon Lorgat has denied issuing any such instruction, calling claims that he did “utter nonsense.” In a press release, Lorgat said “there was no SMS, WhatsApp or BBM sent by me to the coach.”Mbalula, who has impressed on various sports bodies the need to transform, has also denied issuing orders but did not rule out that someone could have had a say in selection. “What Mike Horn is doing is being mischievous. I don’t know how such people find their ways into leadership. Horn must substantiate that there was indeed political interference and calls were made,” Mbalula said. “In any squad, any game, changes are made by selectors. The question is, was that change politically aggravated? There was no such thing from my side. I don’t select squads. Ask AB de Villiers, ask Russell Domingo if they ever received a call from me.”Both de Villiers and Domingo defended the decision to play Philander in the aftermath of South Africa’s exit from the tournament. But insiders say both were upset by the decision to play him at the time, with some reports suggesting de Villiers threatened to quit the captaincy. Horn hinted that there was unhappiness in the camp before they stepped on to Eden Park and accepted the blame for failing to motivate the players enough to influence the result positively.”My job was to say, ‘Listen guys, now we have got to give just a little bit more than what we gave before. We have got to fill gaps. We have to make a difference with less, but give more’,” Horn said. “It is what it is, I take it as it is. It doesn’t matter how politics or the quota influenced the players. I think I failed a bit in my job as motivator or as high-performance coach in the way that I believed the Proteas could win the World Cup.”

Sarfaraz and Suryakumar's withheld Ranji fees

The Mumbai Cricket Association has decided to withhold the match fees of Sarfaraz Khan and Suryakumar Yadav as a punishment for their on and off-field indiscipline

Amol Karhadkar30-Apr-2015

Suryakumar Yadav was made Mumbai’s Ranji captain at the start of the season and later removed from the post•PTI

Suryakumar Yadav and Sarfaraz Khan have made the headlines in the past few weeks with a couple of valuable knocks, laced with aggressive and unorthodox strokeplay during the Indian Premier League. If you believe the administration of their Ranji team, Mumbai, they show as little deference to authority as they do to conventional batsmanship. So both men’s match fees have been held as insurance. “The MCA managing committee has decided to withhold Sarfaraz and Surya’s match fees for the next two years as an assurance for their good behaviour,” Ravi Sawant, MCA vice-president, said.Technically, an association can only block a part of a cricketer’s match fees. Domestic players are paid Rs 10000 per match day by their respective states at the end of the season and the remaining dues are settled by the BCCI based on profits gained. The amount paid by the host association is then reimbursed by the BCCI, so with the MCA withholding players’ dues, it cannot seek the money from the Board till the players are paid. But MCA officials said they were compelled to take the decision to stress the importance of discipline among the younger generation.Suryakumar has been appointed vice-captain of defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, while Sarfaraz nearly became the youngest player to score a fifty in IPL history last night against Rajasthan Royals. However, multiple indiscretions – on and off the field – had initially left Sarfaraz and Suryakumar out of Mumbai’s list of probables for the domestic Twenty20 tournament. The duo were considered for selection only after they tendered an unconditional apology to the MCA disciplinary committee.Suryakumar, who led Mumbai for the first six Ranji Trophy matches, used abusive language towards MCA office bearers in a taped telephonic conversation with a team-mate. He had also complained against his team-mates to the match referee, and had in turn had been the subject of one from his team-mates for using abusive language in the dressing room and on the field.Sarfaraz was dropped from the Ranji squad and later found himself in controversy when he made offensive gestures at the selectors after after leading Mumbai to a victory in the Under-19 championship semi-final.

McCullum fails to find the 'second launch'

Even at 12 for 3, Brendon McCullum was not thinking about purely trying to save the first Test at Lord’s – something that ultimately proved 9.3 overs out of reach in one of the finest Tests staged on the ground.

Even at 12 for 3, Brendon McCullum was not thinking about purely trying to save the first Test at Lord’s – something that ultimately proved 9.3 overs out of reach in one of the finest Tests staged on the ground. When Ross Taylor was lbw to Stuart Broad before lunch it was not McCullum who came down the pavilion steps at No. 5 but BJ Watling. But the plan was not to shut up shop but to try and form a platform for a “second launch”. For a while, as Watling and Corey Anderson added 107 in 27 overs, McCullum dared to dream that another incredible New Zealand story could unfold only for the match to end in a defeat that would have been scarcely believable 48 hours earlier.”It just organically happened that we realised it was probably a little bit beyond us,” he said. “But at least when Corey was batting, he’s such a free-scorer and with the field the way it was, who knows, if he’d been able to manufacture a partnership, how close we may have got. I thought our No. 10 and 11 did well to hang on there as long as they did and BJ Watling for me, it was another example of how important he is at soaking up the pressure which is why we promoted him to try and set up for a second launch.”To England’s credit they were too good for us in the crucial stages but I’m still really proud of our guys and the way we kept going. I thought it was a fantastic Test to be a part of, to play five days in front of full houses at Lord’s and for it come down to the final 10 overs is a testament to how good it was.”New Zealand still only have one Test victory at Lord’s, the win in 1999 that helped them secure the series victory. The best they can hope for this time, in a two-match series that deserves to be longer, is a share of the spoils from Headingley and for all McCullum’s positivity this will always be a match that got away after their dominance on the second and third days.”It hurts a lot, I won’t lie,” he said. “At the same time there’s an element of pride that we continue to play a style of cricket that gives us our greatest chance. There will be times when teams can stand up to you and withstand the pressure and come out on top. You just have to doff the cap, say well played and make sure next time you get the chance you go hard again and ask the same question. Who knows, at Headingley we may see a different result but I’m sure our guys will continue to play the same style.”McCullum said there were some “sore bodies” in the dressing room, among them Watling with his knee and neck and also Anderson with a back niggle. The three frontline quicks all bowled more than 50 overs in the match, with Trent Boult sending down 63, but McCullum insisted the team would be ready to go again”Emotionally our guys are really steady and that’s allowed us to be able to play some good cricket so that will be the message, no knee jerk reaction to a performance like this because we were pretty good for most of it.”

Estou praticamente me beneficiando – concluiu.

Gambhir turns to Langer to revive career

In an attempt to revive his stalled international career, Gautam Gambhir is in Perth, training under Justin Langer, the Western Australia coach

Gautam Gambhir trains under Justin Langer in Perth

In an attempt to revive his stalled international career, Gautam Gambhir is in Perth these days, training under the supervision of the former Australia batsman Justin Langer. Langer is the head coach of Western Australia and the city’s T20 team Perth Scorchers.Gambhir returned briefly to international cricket last year, but was discarded after two underwhelming Tests in England, where he made scores of 4, 18, 0 and 3 in his four innings. That recall came after more than a year and a half in the wilderness. He was dropped from the Test team in December 2012 after India lost a home series to England, in which he made 251 runs at an average of 41.83 in the four Tests. He lost his one-day spot a month later, and was not included in India’s 30-man list of probables for the World Cup earlier this year.”I met JL [Langer] during the last Champions League last year when he was touring with Perth Scorchers as their coach,” Gambhir said, explaining the decision to train under him. “We spoke about a few things, about my batting, and I realised that he could be my go-to man to work on my game.”With over 10,000 runs from his 56 Tests, 147 ODIs and 37 T20Is so far, Gambhir has had a prolific international career. However, in recent years several experts have pointed at technical flaws that appear to have crept into his batting. The intention behind seeking Langer out, Gambhir says, is not to focus on specific areas of concern but to work on what he calls the “overall development of my game, to take me to the next level.””I’d read Langer’s interviews and his books,” Gambhir said. “I could relate to him a lot. He too is an intense character like me and these things pushed me to come here.”Gambhir, who has led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles in the last four years, making strong contributions with the bat himself, leaned heavily on his childhood coach Parthasarathi Sharma for personalised attention. Sharma’s death in 2010 led him to first seek out the former India opener WV Raman before turning to Langer now.The stint in Perth includes not just cricket skills but also gymnastics and martial arts sessions along with the Western Australia players. Gambhir describes the experience as the “first of a kind.””The entire thing is beautifully married into the cricket programme and there is logic in what these guys do,” Gambhir said. “After taking part in these sessions I understood that gymnastics was focused at helping the boys improve their fielding by making them do various stretches and martial arts was trained at bettering the footwork and agility of the players.”The 44-year old Langer has earned his stripes as a coach since retiring from international cricket in 2007. He was contacted by the ECB’s director of cricket Andrew Strauss for the England role but ruled himself out citing family reasons. Since taking over as Western Australia coach in 2012, Langer has guided them to two Sheffield Shield finals and this year’s domestic state one-day title. Under his wing Perth Scorchers have won the last two Big Bash titles.Although the 33-year old Gambhir doesn’t appear to be in the scheme of things for the national selectors at the moment, he has clearly not given up hopes of a recall. It remains to be seen if this stint with Langer, which ends in the second week of July, will help him rediscover the verve in his game and lead to another opportunity at the highest level.

Younis 171* gives Pakistan series in record chase

Younis Khan’s epic, unbeaten 171 led Pakistan to their highest successful chase, the second highest in Asia for any side, and the sixth-highest in all Test cricket

The Report by Abhishek Purohit07-Jul-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details6:20

Bazid: Even Younis will rate it as one of his finest knocks

Younis Khan’s epic, unbeaten 171 led Pakistan to their highest successful chase, the second highest in Asia for any side, and the sixth highest in all Test cricket. It also gave them their first series win in Sri Lanka since 2006, and catapulted them to third in the ICC Test rankings. The feat required the highest fourth-innings partnership for Pakistan, 242 between Younis and Shan Masood, who fell on the fifth morning for 125. Misbah-ul-Haq arrived with 122 needed, saw off Sri Lanka’s quicks till lunch, and opened up after that to reel off an unbeaten 59, finishing the match with a six.Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers put in a spirited effort, especially with the second new ball, but could not break down Younis and Misbah.Pakistan needed 147 more at the start of the day, and Masood and Younis’ record partnership grew by 25 before the former fell to his nerves. Masood had been tied down by Sri Lanka’s accuracy, and was itching to break free. No release was provided by Angelo Mathews and the specialist seamers. When the offspinner Tharindu Kaushal was introduced in the 11th over of the morning, Masood, eyeing some runs, jumped out, but was beaten by the turn to be stumped.Sri Lanka’s specialist spinner had begun promisingly after a wayward return of 0 for 92 in 20 overs on day four, but again, he failed to sustain the pressure. He did shift his line wider outside off and spun it in sharply with men waiting in the leg trap, but was too inconsistent with his lengths. Misbah and Younis used the sweep frequently, and put away the regular full tosses with ease.It was a different story against the quicks. The first boundary of the day came only in the tenth over, when Younis forced an edge through the vacant slip region off Nuwan Pradeep. There was little in the pitch by way of variable bounce to suggest it was a day-five subcontinent wicket. Despite their discipline at the start, Sri Lanka were dependent on the new ball. Pakistan needed 101 more when it was taken, and they had the personnel in the middle to get them through.Misbah was happy to deny himself against the new ball, going 22 balls without a run. Batting on a big hundred, Younis was eager to move across and play as much as he could. There was an unsuccessful review for leg-before against Younis, on 128, by Dhammika Prasad, replays returning umpire’s call for points of impact on pad and stumps. As Mathews tried Kaushal again at the stroke of lunch, Misbah stepped out to lift him over mid-on. Sri Lanka’s challenge fell apart after lunch, Misbah and Younis raining boundaries on the hapless Kaushal, who had played ahead of veteran Rangana Herath, and was to end with figures of 1 for 153 in 31 overs. The winning runs came again from Misbah’s bat, as they had come during their Sharjah chase of 302 against Sri Lanka in 2014. Younis ended with the fifth-highest score in a chase.
