Juan Cuadrado proved vs Poland he would be a great attacking addition for Arsenal

New Arsenal manager Unai Emery’s main priority in the transfer market this summer will be to strengthen his midfield and defensive options following a disastrous 2017/18 campaign in which they struggled away from home and once again failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The Spaniard, who would be making his first big mistake as boss by signing a 29-year-old World Cup star, will know that he needs to boost his backline if they are to enjoy an improved 2018/19 season, and with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil in attack he has the top-class options available to him going forward.

[ad_pod ]

However, having lost Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott over the course of the previous two transfer windows, the north London club may well be looking to add some pace in wide areas that they were sometimes lacking earlier this year.

One player that may have caught Emery’s eye on Sunday is Colombia’s Juan Cuadrado, rated at £25.2m by Transfermarkt, who currently plays for Juventus after he proved to be a flop in the Premier League with Chelsea, where he made just 15 appearances in all competitions before he was sold to the Serie A giants.

The 30-year-old showed the speed he has against Poland by successfully completing five dribbles, while he also produced seven crosses and three key passes with a passing accuracy of 95%, as per WhoScored.com.

With one goal from three shots, the wideman proved that he is a goal threat as well as being creative, and he could be the missing link in Arsenal’s attack ahead of the new season.

Form Guide: How Man United and Chelsea fare ahead of Sunday’s clash

Manchester United host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday where a win for the Red Devils could put six points between the two great rivals. Much of the focus will be on the two managers, neither of which will feel particularly confident given their recent league form.

After a run of three draws over the Christmas period, Jose Mourinho’s United returned to winning ways in January with three much-needed results. Fantastic goals from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard ensured their first win of the calendar year against Everton at Goodison Park, before a 3-0 demolition of Stoke City instilled some confidence back at Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba ran the show against Everton and Stoke, but since then has gone off the boil. Following a hard fought but well deserved 1-0 win at Burnley, United put in perhaps their worst performance of the season at Wembley in a 2-0 loss to Spurs. Pogba and several others were then benched the following week against Huddersfield, and a dull 2-0 win over the struggling Premier League newcomers did little to lift spirits.

[ad_pod ]

United’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle heaped more misery on Mourinho, and while much of the media focus remains on Paul Pogba, star signing Alexis Sanchez hasn’t exactly made the intended impact. The Chilean’s hesitation wasted a golden chance to give United the lead at St. James’, and his arrival seems to have had a negative effect on 22 year-old Anthony Martial.

Chelsea won’t exactly feel full of confidence on Sunday either. The Londoners’ spirits will be lifted by their Champions League draw with Barcelona, but their recent Premier League form has been inconsistent to say the least.

Draws against Arsenal and Leicester were put behind them with a 4-0 thrashing of Brighton, only for Conte’s men to capitulate at home to Bournemouth in a 3-0 defeat. A 4-1 drubbing at Watford only made matters worse, with Tiémoué Bakayoko getting sent off after just 30 minutes. The sensational Eden Hazard looked to have rescued a point for the Blues late on, but their defensive frailties were punished by a rampant Watford in a flurry of late goals. Hazard then found the net twice in a 3-0 home victory against West Brom.

With both sides struggling for form, it’s likely to be a cagey affair at Old Trafford on Sunday, especially given the way both managers set up in big games. The onus may be on individuals to produce something out of nothing, and if recent form is anything to go by that individual will most likely be Hazard.

FIVE in-form Champ stars that should be catching Newcastle’s attention

DespiteÂbeing unquestionably the most competitive second tier in world football, the Championship is overlooked more and more as a recruitment pool for the Premier League.Newcastle spent £6million on Nottingham Forest pair Karl Darlow and Jamaal Lascelles this summer – with their moves delayed until 2015 – but such deals were the exception rather than the norm.Which is incredibly surprising because the Championship has some great players to offer the top flight. And just to prove it, here’s a list of FIVE thatÂhave enjoyed Âfantastic form in the early part of the season.Could they become the next Championship stars to make the move to St. James’ Park?

TOM CAIRNEY

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Tom Cairney won the Player of the Year award at Ewood park last season and has started the current campaign in a similar vein, finding two goals and three assists as an ever-present member of his side’s promotion push.

That includes this absolute banger against Norwich:

As well as this more cultured effort against Cardiff City:

The 23 year-old has been one of the Championship’s most creative forces this season, with his 2.9 key passes per match ranking in fifth throughout the division:

Likewise, in terms of pass completion rate, the former Scotland U21 makes it into the top ten:

Should Rovers return to the top flight this season, Cairney will undoubtedly play a major role.

Blackburn demonstrated a staunch public resistance to selling Jordan Rhodes during last transfer window, so if Newcastle wish to snap up the in-form midfielder, they’ll likely have to wait until next summer.

NATHAN REDMOND

Norwich City hotshot Nathan Redmond is no stranger to the top flight. He impressed last season despite the Canaries plummeting out of the Premier League, and was linked to the likes of Stoke City and Southampton during the summer:

Looking at the 20 year-old’s form so far this season, it’s easy to see why. He’s ranked third in the Championship for key passes, as viewable below:

And for accurate crosses:

Whilst he comes in joint-top for successful dribbles:

That’s seen the touchline-hugging winger claim two assists in nine Championship outings this season. He’s making considerable progress in the England set-up too, with four goals and 16 caps for the U21s – that includes this clinical strike against Wales:

//www.youtube.com/embed/Nb9zfGj3Inc?rel=0

Having also impressed in the second-tier with boyhood club Birmingham City, Redmond is clearly destined for the Premier League.

Furthermore, Newcastle’s squad could certainly do with some added quality out wide, but Norwich will be reluctant to sell whilst they’re still on course to bounce straight back to the top flight.

Another promising young Championship winger who already boasts some experience in the top flight is Wigan Athletic’s Callum McManaman, infamous to Newcastle fans for this horror tackle on Massadio Haidara back in March 2013:

//www.youtube.com/embed/lD_j8CKVQw8?rel=0

But the 23 year-old has done a lot of growing up since then. And after struggling to adapt to the second-tier last season, has emerged as a key player for the Latics to find four goals in eight Championship appearances. This solo effort against Charlton Athletic particularly stood out:

//www.youtube.com/embed/lXwdBexgxDI?rel=0

He’s also one of the division’s most proficient dribblers, as viewable below:

Of course, McManaman is best known for his vital role in Wigan’s FA Cup haul back in 2013, netting three times en route to the Wembley final where he was named as Man of the Match against Manchester City. Here’s a look at his highlights from that historic afternoon:

//www.youtube.com/embed/0TELrr32QNo?rel=0

A move back to the Premier League could unlock that kind of form on a more consistent basis, but having rejected a bid from Celtic in the summer, Wigan appear in no mood to sell.

IGOR VETOKELE

Charlton Athletic striker Igor Vetokele arrived at the Valley this summer and didn’t take long to make his impact felt, picking up the Championship’s Player of the Month award for August.

Indeed, the 22 year-old claimed five goals, one assist and two Man of the Match awards in his first five appearances for the Addicks as the spearhead of Bob Peeters’ mini-revolution in south-east London – including this brace in during a 2-2 draw with Brighton:

//www.youtube.com/embed/E57e-xjtY5Q?rel=0

That currently leaves him joint-third in the Championship’s scoring charts:

That may seem like a bit of a flash in the pan, considering the Angola international hasn’t found the net in his last four Championship outings.

But Vetokele was sourced from FC Copenhagen this summer, where he netted 16 goals in 43 league appearances and also sporadically featured in the Champions League, underlining his pedigree.

Having only just joined the Addicks, Newcastle won’t be striking a deal for the 5 foot 8 poacher any time soon. But Vetokele’s Championship career has started magnificently; the Magpies would be wise to monitor his progress from afar.

Michail Antonio

Nottingham Forest summer signing Michail Antonio is arguably the Championship’s most in-form player right now, proving incredibly proficient in a supporting role to the division’s top scorer, Britt Assombalonga. Here’s a look at his stats from the campaign:

The 24 year-old can operate anywhere in the attacking third, including as an out-and-out striker, but his predominant position for Forest this season has been on the left wing.

Antonio has been doing the rounds in the Football League for some time, having turned out for Reading, Cheltenham, Southampton, Colchester and Sheffield Wednesday – whom Forest bought him from for £1.5million this summer – after making a name for himself at non-league side Tooting and Mitcham United.

Former non-leaguers reaching the top flight has become a bit of a theme over the last few years – Rickie Lambert, Jamie Vardy and Charlie Austin to name a few – and the 5 foot 9 winger has enough about him to maintain that trend. Take this Dennis-Bergkamp-esque strike against Fulham for example:

Once again, it’s unlikely Stuart Pearce’s side will sell any time soon, but Antonio remains one to watch for the future.

McCarthy Building From The Back At Ipswich

This week we have seen Mick McCarthy bring in Kelly Youga on a short-term contract and Bradley Orr on a loan until the end of January. Youga and Orr mostly play at left back and right back respectively, areas which are key in the Championship.

The key aspect to remember with these two signings is that they are short-term deals with the intention of them becoming long-term deals, provided that they perform well.

I know a lot of fans had issues with the club relying on short term deals and I felt very much the same about that philosophy. However, I think everyone will agree that these two deals are good for the club given their situation.

These two signings also suggest that McCarthy is not a fan of the back four that Jewell was using during his time here. I mentioned at the start of the season that Ipswich could really do with signing a right back as Carlos Edwards should be playing in midfield, but the club made very different signings.

For this reason and many others the signing of Orr is the better one out of the two. The club have needed a natural right back for a long time now so it is refreshing to see him come in. Orr has proven over a number of seasons that he is a player capable of holding his own in the Championship and won promotion with QPR and Neil Warnock.

Youga on the other hand is a much lower profile player but one that could be useful nevertheless. He is certainly not rated as highly as Orr and probably won’t be much more than a squad player but the club can’t really lose out from this deal. The 27-year-old left back has joined Town for a few months and in that time McCarthy will be able to judge whether he can cut it at this level. If he does then it will be great to see Cresswell have some competition and if he doesn’t make it then we let him go without any problems.

It is also pleasing to see that McCarthy is building from the back. Once we stop letting goals in so freely we can then look at bringing in some talented players further up the field. It is a great approach to have and perhaps Jewell’s failure to make the right changes at the back was a big part of his rapid downfall.

It would not surprise me at all to see a decent centre back join Ipswich in January too. Chambers was supposed to be the man to get the defence organised and whilst he still could be, I think McCarthy will bring in someone to partner him.

What we have to remember is that McCarthy’s job this season is to keep Ipswich away from relegation and build for next season. I think his plan is to sort out the defence in January and then bring in some talent elsewhere over the summer. After all, a solid defence is what will bring us away from relegation.

So his next few signings may not be as exciting as we expect.

It is likely that he will bring in some rugged defensive players that some will be bored by, but that is what the team needs right now. Hopefully we will see a good defensive performance against Leicester on Saturday and personally I would be more than happy to see a boring 0-0.

Southampton fans shocked by rumours of Tadic exit

Last season, Dusan Tadic had moments of inconsistency during Southampton’s difficult season.

There were times when he was the best player on the pitch, and days when he failed to contribute to the effort of the team.

Despite this, the Serbian international, who has earned 54 caps for his country, is regarded as one of the Saints’ best players.

The 2017-18 campaign was tough for everyone associated with the coastal club as they had a very serious brush with relegation.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255885″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Southampton’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

It took a slender 1-0 win over Swansea City in the closing stages of the season to retain their spot in the Premier League.

Mark Hughes had a tough job on his hands when he replaced Manuel Pellegrini in March, but he managed to reach the main objective, and earned himself a permanent contract as a result.

Tadic has been a Southampton player since 2014 when he signed from Twente, but rumblings from the rumour mill suggest that he could be on his way out of the exit gates at St Mary’s.

Dutch publication De Telegraaf reports that Ajax have agreed personal terms with the winger on a four-year contract.

It is believed that the Eredivisie giants will part with around £15m to sign the 29-year-old, who scored seven goals and created four assists in 41 appearances in all competitions last season.

Some Southampton fans have been left fuming at the thought of selling Tadic.

In Focus: Wanyama can be an effective midfield enforcer for Liverpool

As reported by The Daily Mail, Liverpool are tracking Victor Wanyama’s situation at Tottenham Hotspur, ahead of the potential departure of midfielder Emre Can.

What’s the story?

Can’s contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season and his long-term future at Anfield is in serious doubt amidst reported interest from Serie A giants Juventus.

If he does leave, Jurgen Klopp will need a midfield replacement and it seems the club are preparing for such an eventuality with their interest in a Premier League rival.

The Daily Mail report that the Reds are keeping a track of Victor Wanyama’s progress in Mauricio Pochettino’s first team, with the Kenyan international struggling to become a regular starter after a return from injury.

The player, rated at £27m by Transfermarkt, is also drawing admirers from Chelsea and Manchester United, say the paper.

Would he fit in at Liverpool?

With Klopp always looking to play an expansive, attacking brand of football, a player in the mould of Victor Wanyama can bring great balance to the Liverpool midfield.

The 26-year-old tends to favour the defensive side of the game more than pressing forward, with his physicality, stamina and work rate all attributes that make him a fearsome Premier League midfielder when he’s playing well.

He isn’t just midfield muscle though, with his pass success percentage for Spurs creeping over 90% for Tottenham this season, as shown by Whoscored.

Working with the other talents at Anfield, the Kenyan could be exactly what Liverpool are looking for to find that sweet spot between defensive stability and attacking prowess.

Suarez confirms Liverpool exit for Barcelona

Luis Suarez has confirmed via Liverpool’s official website that he is heading to Barcelona.

The Uruguayan striker fired the Reds to Champions League qualification last term after penning a new contract, and looked on course to be staying at Anfield until a few weeks ago.

Since a controversial biting incident at the World Cup it has become apparent that the 27-year-old was heading out away from Merseyside, and it has now been confirmed by the player himself that he’ll be a Barca star for 2014/15:

“It is with a heavy heart that I leave Liverpool for a new life and new challenges in Spain. Both me and my family have fallen in love with this club and with the city.

“But most of all I have fallen in love with the incredible fans. You have always supported me and we, as a family, will never forget it, we will always be Liverpool supporters.

“I hope you can all understand why I have made this decision. This club did all they could to get me to stay, but playing and living in Spain, where my wife’s family live, is a lifelong dream and ambition. I believe now the timing is right.

“I wish Brendan Rodgers and the team well for the future. The club is in great hands and I’m sure will be successful again next season.

“I am very proud I have played my part in helping to return Liverpool to the elite of the Premier League and in particular back into the Champions League.

“Thank you again for some great moments and memories. You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Sunderland skipper will stay at Stadium of Light

Lee Cattermole has finalised a deal to stay on at Sunderland for another four years.

Cattermole, captain for the Black Cats, joined the club in 2009 from Wigan, and has now signed a contract to remain at the Stadium of Light until 2016.

Sunderland’s skipper has appeared 72 times for the club, and though he has a bad record for discipline, with seven red cards, manager Martin O’Neill is an admirer of him.

Cattermole has expressed his delight that he is staying with Sunderland. He said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It feels like it’s taken a bit of time, but the gaffer made it clear to me at the end of the season that he wanted to keep me at the club so it took a bit of time but it’s been sorted in the end. If you look at our signings in the summer. I think you can see that we have made some big signings and I think it’s the best place for me at the minute.”

The midfielder is also looking forward to meeting his former club Middlesbrough in the League Cup tomorrow. Cattermole missed both games between the sides the previous season. He also realises it is a good opportunity for the Black Cats to get their hands on a trophy.

He said on Sunderland’s official website: “The gaffer is keen on the cups and doesn’t take them lightly. Look at the teams we put out against Morecambe and MK Dons. We’re looking to progress and this is a great chance to pick up some silverware. I remember the draw (for the FA Cup 0 being announced last season after we’d beaten Peterborough and I was happier than anyone that we drew Middlesbrough. But I pulled my hamstring on the Friday before the game, which was devastating.  I was playing really well at the time and was really looking forward to the game.”

Shakeel, Rizwan fifties lead Pakistan's recovery

Pakistan were reduced to 46 for 4 before a gritty rearguard from Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel

Danyal Rasool17-Jan-2025Half-centuries from Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan wrestled momentum back for Pakistan after Jayden Seales’ triple-strike had put West Indies in the box seat in Multan. On a surface tailor-made for spin, it was the fast bowler who proved the pick of the bunch, exploiting pace and slight seam movement to send debutant Mohammad Hurraira, Kamran Ghulam and Babar Azam back for single figures. Pakistan had, at that point, been reduced to 46 for 4, with West Indies looming ominously over the tail. But a gritty unbeaten 97-run rearguard for the fifth wicket, from Rizwan and Shakeel, thwarted the visitors for the rest of the day, to ensure Pakistan would end the day with a semblance of control. After the start was delayed by four hours owing to heavy fog that enveloped the ground, Pakistan won the toss and batted first in hazy conditions with the floodlights on throughout the course of the day. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie bowled the first ball, an indication of how both sides perceived the pitch upon which each played three specialist spinners. Motie got rid of Pakistan captain Shan Masood early on, squeezing him down to the debutant wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach on the on side, but for the rest of the hour, it was Seales’ show.He had been sniffing right from the outset, and got his reward when Hurraira hung his bat out and edged to the keeper. It was followed up by a beauty to remove Kamran Ghulam, who had just dispatched an outswinger to the boundary. The next ball, he attempted to shoulder arms but it seamed back into him wickedly, rapping the thigh, with Hawk-Eye showing it would have clipped the top of off.Kamran Ghulam was lbw shouldering arms to Jayden Seales•PCB

The big fish came soon after, another glorious use of the seam. Seales hit a hard length which Babar looked to parry into the off side, but it shaped away just enough to kiss the outside edge through to Imlach. Babar would review, but, like Ghulam, he would not be reprieved. The innings threatened to fall apart at that point, but Saud Shakeel, seasoned on surfaces like these, restored some order to proceedings for Pakistan. The sting was taken out of the quicks and the spinners negotiated deftly, while Mohammad Rizwan at the other end kept his concentration levels up as West Indies continued to prowl. There was a notable acceleration from the pair after tea, right from when Shakeel got to his knees and swept Kevin Sinclair for four. It was a shot that brought the pair bounty through the session, giving them a release shot as the ball began to rip. The next six overs produced seven boundaries with Rizwan the chief aggressor, brave enough to use his feet to spin and ensuring the strike kept ticking over. There remained plenty for the visitors to get excited about. A number of balls beat the outside edge by a whisker, and Shakeel popped one up dangerously close to short midwicket just shy of a half-century. But when he got there, and Rizwan followed up soon after, the milestones were both well-deserved. By now, the light had been deteriorating consistently, and midway through Kraigg Brathwaite’s first over, the light-metre came out, and the players went off. By then, Pakistan were arguably the happier side, having been dragged by Rizwan and Shakeel towards a rather less perilous position than they found themselves in after the first hour.

Reece pieces together another hundred as Glamorgan feel pain again

Derbyshire batter records sixth successive 50-plus score with unbeaten 139 at Cardiff

ECB Reporters Network26-Sep-2023Luis Reece continued to wage his personal battle against the Glamorgan bowlers as he equaled the Derbyshire record of six successive fifties in first-class cricket on the way to plundering his third century of the summer against the Welsh county at Sophia Gardens.Glamorgan’s decision to put Derbyshire into bat on a green wicket in Cardiff came back to haunt them as the visitors settled in and made hay, ending the first day on 308 for 2.It was also a significant day for Sue Redfern, who became the first female umpire to stand in a first-class match in England or Wales – although Glamorgan asked few questions of either the batters or the officials.Reece, 33, was at the heart of the action all day long as he put his side in control with an unbeaten 139 in 96 overs. He put on 80 for the first wicket with Harry Came and then 180 for the second with Brooke Guest.Leus du Plooy joined him for the final 75 minutes of the day and ended on 22 not out as his contribution to an unbroken third wicket stand of 48.The home side are due to say goodbye to their chief executive, Hugh Morris, captain, David Lloyd, and head coach, Matt Maynard, and were hoping to push for a final to potentially take them up to third in the table. But the bowlers were once again made to toil in the field by the left-handed Reece as he took his tally of first-class runs against Glamorgan this summer to 471.He scored 139 and an unbeaten 201, his highest score in first-class cricket, in the drawn game at the County Ground, in Derby in July. He also made 69 against them in the One-Day Cup clash in Derby last month.Reece’s hot streak began in the home clash with Durham in July when he scored 54 in the second innings. From there he notched his twin centuries against Glamorgan before taking 77 off the Gloucestershire attack and 86 against Sussex. In his latest success, he reached 50 off 74 balls, his century off 175 balls and currently has 16 fours and a six to his credit. Fellow opener Came looked comfortable until he was caught at the wicket by Chris Cooke off the bowling of Zain-ul-Hassan in the 27th over. The next departure was 50 overs later when James Harris had Guest trapped lbw four runs short of his century.Glamorgan tried seven bowlers throughout the day and four of them went for more than 50 runs.
