Tottenham: Levy Wants The "New Pochettino" At Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are after the new ‘Pochettino’ as BBC journalist Guillem Balague shares why they want Burnley boss Vincent Kompany.

What’s the latest on Kompany to Spurs?

Reliable outlets have suggested that the 37-year-old is high on chairman Daniel Levy’s wishlist as he scours the market for a new permanent manager to succeed Antonio Conte.

It’s been a torrid time in north London of late, with Spurs’ latest 6-1 humbling at the hands of Newcastle United dealing a mighty blow to their hopes of sealing a top four Premier League finish.

Former interim boss Cristian Stellini lost his job as a result of their St. James’ Park thrashing, with Levy placing Ryan Mason in charge until the end of the campaign instead.

In the background, Tottenham are well and truly searching for the tactician who can take them forward and reinstall some much-needed optimism. Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique, both out of work after leaving their most recent jobs, have been heavily linked – meanwhile the likes of Arne Slot (Feyenoord) and Kompany continue to be of interest.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany

However, despite supporters singing his name in the stands on match day, former Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino never made it far enough to enter serious contention and is now just steps away from joining Chelsea.

This will be a frustrating development for many Spurs fans, not least because their ex-hero is reportedly about to take the reins at a major rival. Balague, sharing why Tottenham didn’t move more seriously for Pochettino despite reports, has also explained the interest in Kompany.

Taking to Twitter, the BBC regular says Spurs are ‘after’ the new ‘Pochettino’ – hence their fondness for Anderlecht’s former manager.

He explained:

What has Kompany done so far?

Burnley are now champions of the English second tier after a 1-0 win over Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night.

The Clarets stormed to Championship promotion in real style and in Kompany’s debut season – winning the most games, losing the least and conceding the fewest out of any other side in the division thus far (Sky).

Called ‘amazing’ for his work at Turf Moor by members of the media like Chris Kamara, the Belgian has been heralded for his brand of football and overall job at Burnley.

It’s little surprise Spurs are considering him but we believe a lack of experience elsewhere is something Levy should also take into account.

Sean Dyche Confirms Relegation-Threatening Injury Blow

Everton will be without Ben Godfrey when they face Brighton on Monday as their injury list grows amid their fight for Premier League survival.

The Blues are in a scrap to avoid relegation and find themselves mired in 19th place. There is hope, however, as the three teams above them (Forest, Leeds and Leicester) are all on 30 points. This means a single win could catapult them into a far safer position.

Sean Dyche briefed the media on his side's worrying injury situation on Thursday as they travel to the Amex Stadium to face Roberto De Zerbi's side on Monday evening.

What is the Everton injury update?

Speaking at his press conference, Dyche first reported that Amadou Onana will be available which is a major boost given how important his pace and power are to the Blues' midfield. After recovering from illness, Onana will likely return to the side after only making the bench for the 2-2 draw with Leicester.

A massive blow, however, comes in the form of Seamus Coleman's knee injury. The positive news for Everton fans is that it is not an ACL injury, but it likely will force him to miss the remainder of the season.

Godfrey, Dyche revealed, will also miss the Brighton game, telling the assembled reporters: "Godfrey's groin is still not right so he will take a bit of time."

Meanwhile, both Andros Townsend and Ruben Vinagre remain unavailable for selection as Everton head into their final four games of the season.

Can Everton make the most of the last four games?

Each relegation candidate has played 34 games and so there is something of a level playing field heading into the final four games of the season.

It's going to be an enthralling fight for survival as each of the teams with a chance to avoid relegation face tricky final fixtures.

Everton face Brighton before Manchester City and Wolves with their final game of the season at Goodison Park against Bournemouth. With so much riding on these remaining games, Dyche and his players will need the home fans to drag their team across the line.

Supporters will be hoping that the teams above them drop further points with Leicester facing possible the second-trickiest final batch of games. They must face Fulham, Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham.

Leeds United fans are sure to be nervous as they square up against Man City, Newcastle, West Ham and Spurs.

Nottingham Forrest don't have a much easier run of games either with Southampton, Chelsea, Arsenal and Crystal Palace to face before their Premier League fate is determined.

The bottom line for Everton supporters is that it's not over until it's mathematically impossible.

Tottenham Transfer News: £17m Playmaker Can Replace Son

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a difficult season and are on course to miss out on qualification for the Champions League next term.

Spurs are currently six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who have a game in hand, with three matches left to play this month.

Ryan Mason is currently in charge of the club on an interim basis before a permanent manager is appointed by chairman Daniel Levy in the summer and the off-season could be key to the side's success in 2023/24.

Whilst getting a head coach in is paramount to Tottenham's hopes of improvement next term, the summer window provides the chairman with an opportunity to improve the squad.

One position that the club could add in is out wide as Heung-min Son's regression this season has opened the door to a player coming in to challenge for his spot in the XI next season.

Who is Kang-in Lee?

Kang-in Lee, who is set to be available for €20m (£17m), is a reported transfer target for Spurs this summer, according to Spanish outlet AS (via Sport Witness), and currently plays for LaLiga outfit RCD Mallorca as a left winger or attacking midfielder primarily.

Tottenham Hotspur forward Heung-min Son.

At the age of 22, he is a young prospect who could come in as a long-term addition to the squad and someone who could be the eventual heir to Son's place in the team, particularly given the South Korean hero's drop in form this year.

The current Tottenham attacker scored 23 goals and created ten 'big chances' for his teammates in the Premier League last term but has only managed ten goals and six 'big chances' created in 2022/23.

Lee, meanwhile, has scored six goals and provided 12 'big chances' for others in 29 LaLiga starts this season, after scoring once and creating two goals in 30 appearances in the previous campaign.

These statistics suggest that the 22-year-old, who South Korea legend Sang-cheol Yoo claimed "absorbs knowledge like a sponge", has been developing his skills and improving his end product, whilst an ageing Son has been on a downward trajectory in the same timeframe.

The Mallorca star has also shown immense promise in terms of both scoring and creating goals in a major European league and has plenty of time left ahead of him to continue to grow, which is why Levy bringing him in this summer could be an excellent piece of business.

He could learn from his compatriot next season with the view to him, hopefully, taking over as the heir to the 30-year-old's position on the left flank and becoming a crucial component of Tottenham's attack.

Anurag Thakur takes over as BCCI president

Anurag Thakur has been appointed the BCCI president at the board’s special general meeting in Mumbai on Sunday

ESPNcricinfo staff22-May-2016

Anurag Thakur (third from left) will head the BCCI till September 2017•BCCI

Anurag Thakur has been unanimously elected the BCCI president at the board’s special general meeting in Mumbai on Sunday. Thakur, 41, and formerly the BCCI secretary, was the only nominee for the post; he will serve as president until September 2017. He will also represent the BCCI on the ICC executive board and the Asian Cricket Council.Thakur is the 34th president of the BCCI and after taking office he nominated Ajay Shirke, the Maharashtra Cricket Association president, as his successor as secretary. Shirke will represent the BCCI at the chief executives committee meetings of the ICC. He had previously served as BCCI treasurer, resigning the post in 2013 because he was unhappy with the board’s response to the IPL corruption scandal.Thakur succeeded Shashank Manohar, who had stepped down as president a week ago so that he would be eligible to be elected the ICC’s first independent chairman. He had held the post of BCCI secretary during Manohar’s tenure and was seen to be the automatic choice to replace Manohar, given the support he gained since he was appointed joint secretary in September 2011.As per the BCCI constitution, its president is elected by a rotational system where each of the five zones is given the chance to put forward candidates at the special general meeting. It was the East zone’s turn and Thakur was formally endorsed by all its six units – Cricket Association of Bengal, National Cricket Club, Odisha Cricket Association, Tripura Cricket Association, Assam Cricket Association and Jharkhand Cricket Association.Thakur, one of the youngest BCCI presidents, is also a politician and is the BJP member of parliament from Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district. The son of the two-time former Himachal Pradesh chief minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal, Thakur is also the head of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association.

Arsenal: Arteta Could Now Lose "Revelation" This Summer

Arsenal and sporting director Edu by extension could let midfield star Granit Xhaka leave if they find a suitable replacement, according to reports.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The north Londoners are still fighting for their first Premier League title in nearly 20 years as manager Mikel Arteta seeks to end his side's long wait for domestic glory.

They have it all to do, though, as close rivals Man City have stolen a march on Arsenal and remain in the driving seat – possessing both a one-point advantage and game in hand.

Like Real Madrid proven on Tuesday evening, the Blues are not unstoppable, which could give Arteta some hope as Arsenal look to take City all the way to the wire.

Off the pitch, Edu and Arsenal are working on additions for next season to maintain Arsenal's place among England's elite, with central midfield reinforcements thought to be taking priority.

emile-smith-rowe-arsenal-opinion-granit-xhaka-mikel-arteta-premier-league

The likes of West Ham star Declan Rice, who the Gunners are in behind-scenes talks with, are top of their transfer agenda for the summer.

In terms of who could depart the Emirates Stadium, a name up for nomination is Xhaka, who has been a fixture in Arteta's starting eleven this season.

German news outlet Sport 1 now claim that Arsenal and Edu are "not averse" to selling the 30-year-old if they find a suitable successor – with Xhaka's deal set to expire in 2024.

The midfield general already has a suitor as well, with Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen apparently working on a deal to sign him.

Alonso is said to have a close relationship with Arteta as the pair were raised together in the Spanish Basque country. They were also former teammates and remain great friends.

Should Arsenal sell Xhaka?

Arsenal have the option to extend his stay by a further year and we believe Xhaka could still have a part to play under Arteta.

His years of top flight experience at Arsenal could make an invaluable member of the dressing room, especially if Arteta has to re-challenge for the title from scratch next season.

Xhaka has played nearly every league game bar one this campaign, registering 12 goal contributions in the process, with Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn calling him a "revelation".

Arteta himself has also called Xhaka a "really important" player this season and it is certainly possible that he could play yet another crucial role next campaign.

Bandara called in for Chameera for third Test

Uncapped left-arm seamer Chaminda Bandara has been called in as a replacement for the injured Dushmantha Chameera in Sri Lanka’s squad for the third Test against England at Lord’s. His selection follows Chameera’s lower-back injury, which ruled him out for the rest of the England tour.Bandara, 29, will leave for England with Kusal Perera, who replaced injured seamer Dhammika Prasad; both players will be available for selection for the Lord’s Test, which starts from June 9.”Bandara has been performing well domestically and he is the best choice available at the time for the English conditions,” chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya said.Sri Lanka will also wait for the results of tests on Shaminda Eranga’s bowling action, which will take place on June 6. Eranga’s action had been reported after the second Test, at Chester-Le-Street. If the tests conclude that Eranga’s action is illegal, he will barred from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect.Bandara was not in the preliminary squad for the tour, but leapfrogs Vishwa Fernando and Kasun Rajitha into the Test squad, thanks largely to his domestic experience. He was also the most successful seam bowler in this year’s first-class tournament, taking 33 wickets at an average of 26.30 for Ports Authority Cricket Club. He has played 51 first-class matches in all, taking 141 wickets at an average of 29.85.

Predicted Celtic XI, Team & Injury News Vs Rangers

Celtic return to action in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon as they travel away from home to face Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox as confirmed champions.

The Hoops are 13 points clear of their rivals in the table and have the chance to extend the gap to a staggering 16 points with three matches left to play.

Ange Postecoglou's side secured the league title last week with a 2-0 win against Hearts and could use these last four games to rotate his side with a view to making decisions on what he wants to do with the squad in the summer transfer window.

How will Celtic line up against Rangers?

The Australian head coach could make three changes to the XI that started against Hearts last time out, with one in midfield and two in attack.

However, the defence could remain the same with Joe Hart between the sticks and a back four of; Anthony Ralston, Carl Starfelt, Yuki Kobayashi, and Greg Taylor.

Cameron Carter-Vickers has been ruled out for the remainder of this season with a knee injury and this has opened the door for January signing Kobayashi to showcase his quality on a regular basis.

Celtic midfielder Aaron Mooy.

In midfield, Aaron Mooy could be brought in to replace Matt O'Riley next to Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate. The 32-year-old has registered four goals and ten assists in 13 Premiership starts this season and the boss could give him an opportunity to add to his tallies against the Light Blues this afternoon.

On the wing, Daizen Maeda could make way for Liel Abada.

The Japan international has one goal in his last seven appearances and the latter has two goals and one assist in the same time, despite only starting once, which could lead to the £15k-per-week "revelation" – as he was dubbed by Alan Hutton – taking the 25-year-old's place this afternoon.

Finally, Kyogo Furuhashi came off with a knock against Hearts and Postecoglou could rest the club's star striker by offering Oh Hyeon-gyu a rare start after his goal off the bench last time out.

Oh has only started once of his 12 Premiership appearances and managed to plunder three goals for the club since arriving on a permanent deal in January and could be given a huge chance to impress whilst leading the line against Rangers today with Abada and Jota either side of him.

Predicted Celtic XI (4-3-3): Hart; Ralston, Starfelt, Kobayashi, Taylor; Hatate, McGregor, Mooy; Abada, Oh, Jota.

BCB vice-president against two-tier Test system

The ICC’s proposal for a two-tier Test system has not been received well in Bangladesh with the BCB’s vice-president Mahbubul Anam the latest to voice dissent as he feared for the growth of cricket in the country. As part of a widespread overhaul, David Richardson, the ICC chief executive, had said they were contemplating an increase in the number of countries with Test status and then separating them into two groups – the top seven and the bottom five – based on performance. Should this happen, Bangladesh, who are ranked ninth, are likely to slip into Division Two and settle for lesser Tests against top cricketing nations.”We do not support this system,” Mahbubul said. “We believe that more we play against competitive sides, the better we will get. If we didn’t play against better standard sides in ODIs, we wouldn’t have come this far. We were the king of the jungle from where we achieved the Test status. We were given a reality check when we were promoted to the highest level. I feel that if we go backwards, our cricket will regress.”As a veteran official who has represented the Bangladesh board at ICC, Mahbubul was disappointed that the global governing body was thinking about creating a “special class” of teams.”It is the ICC’s responsibility to globalise the game and not create a special class,” he said. “Other sports are spreading while cricket is becoming limited. I don’t think this should be the target of a global organisation.”Bangladesh gained Test status in 2000, but if they are relegated, they may have go through a two-year grind in Division Two to earn a promotion.Mahbubul is the third of the BCB directors after Ahmed Sajjadul Alam and Tanjil Chowdhury to speak against the two-tier proposal. The views of Nazmul Hassan, the BCB president, are not public yet.

Ingram maintains Glamorgan's upward curve

Colin Ingram blasted 64 off 30 balls as Glamorgan continued their impressive start to the NatWest T20 Blast with a six-wicket win over Gloucestershire at Bristol. The experienced South African hammered five sixes and four fours as his side comfortably chased down a target of 169 with seven balls to spare. After rain delayed the start until 7pm, Gloucestershire posted 168 for 8, Ian Cockbain and Kieran Noema-Barnett both scoring 37.Dale Steyn was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers with 2 for 21 from his four overs, while Graham Wagg claimed 2 for 28.It didn’t look enough on a good pitch with a fast outfield. Ingram was well supported by Anuerin Donald as Glamorgan made it three wins from four group games.Gloucestershire’s innings got off to a poor start as they lost their two best T20 batsmen Michael Klinger and Hamish Marshall in less than three overs.Klinger had made only five when loosely driving a catch to extra cover off Timm van der Gugten and it was 11 for 2 when Marshall, on 3, played an equally poor shot to be be caught at mid-off, Steyn the successful bowler. It was 30 for 3 when Chris Dent lofted Wagg to long-on where van der Gugten took a good catch in the final Powerplay over.Cockbain launched a counter-attack, hitting two sixes off Meschede before the bowler took revenge by having him caught behind. By that time Benny Howell had gone too and at 79 for 5, the hosts were in a hole.Noema-Barnett played a powerful cameo, hitting sixes off Dean Cosker and van der Gugten in making his runs off 22 balls and Jack Taylor steered Gloucestershire towards a respectable total, helped by an enormous scooped six by Gareth Roderick off Steyn.Andrew Tye’s two sixes in the final over gave the home side hope, but proved in vain.Jacques Rudolph and David Lloyd gave the visitors a solid start with a stand of 29 before Tye struck with the last ball of his first over, the fifth of the innings, Lloyd getting a thick edge off a quicker ball to Liam Norwell at third man.Ingram picked up two sixes over deep backward square in the same Norwell over as Glamorgan moved to 45 for one at the end of the powerplay. The next over from Howell saw Rudolph bowled for 16. But Ingram pulled a Noema-Barnett full-toss for his third six and at the halfway stage in their innings Glamorgan were well placed at 86 for 2.Tye, who had bowled his first two overs for ten runs, was ordered out of the Gloucestershire attack after being no-balled twice for high full-tosses in the 15th over.It was a blow the hosts could not afford. Ingram had reached a 24-ball half-century and by the time he fell to Chris Dent, who had replaced Tye, after hitting the left-arm spinner’s first two balls for six, only 29 were needed from 32 balls.Chris Cooke fell for 16, but Donald was still there at the end, having hit four fours and a six in his 39-ball innings.
