3 players Ipswich could loan in from Chelsea to repeat Hutchinson success

Ipswich Town cemented their stronghold on the automatic promotion positions with a 3-2 home win against Swansea City just before the International break, eight points now separate Kieran McKenna's Tractor Boys and their nearest challengers Leeds United who occupy third.

Scoring a league-best 36 goals for the Championship, Ipswich have been enthralling to watch going forward – forwards such as Nathan Broadhead and Conor Chaplin unnerving second-tier defences with their potency so far this season, whilst other unexpected figures in the first-team set-up have also chipped in with goals to give Ipswich a continued element of surprise in attack.

Omari Hutchinson has helped when needed too, the Chelsea loanee joining Portman Road in the summer in the hopes of learning the ropes at senior level fast and excelling with the Tractor Boys.

The 20-year-old has two goals and three assists from 19 games in all competitions since making the short-term switch from Stamford Bridge, one of those goals helping his new employers overcome Southampton 1-0 away at St Mary's.

Ipswich will hope they can add to their squad with more useful loanees if possible, even going back to Chelsea and potentially recruiting another couple players from the Blues when the transfer window re-opens.

Here are three Chelsea players that could follow in Hutchinson's footsteps in relocating to Suffolk…

1 Jamie Cumming

Ipswich could do with adding fresh blood into the goalkeeper positions at the club, first-choice shot-stopper Vaclav Hladky underwhelming in between the sticks with 21 goals conceded from the 16 Championship games he's featured in.

Goalkeeper Jamie Cumming could well be a welcome addition from Chelsea on a loan deal for the Tractor Boys therefore, who do already have Cieran Slicker as a young back-up purchased from Manchester City this summer.

But, the Blues keeper is far more experienced figure than his ex-Man City counterpart – the 24-year-old a recognisable figure to EFL fans at this point in time, featuring for Stevenage, Gillingham and MK Dons out on loan.

The 6 foot 2 goalkeeper would even win Player of the Year whilst at Milton Keynes in League One, Cumming keeping 14 clean sheets in total across all competitions last season.

McKenna could look to the 24-year-old as a useful utility figure to sign if Hladky continues to leak goals at his current rate, the Chelsea man eager to get back out there and gain more experience with a new club.

2 Josh Brooking

Named on the bench in the Premier League against Fulham in October, 21-year-old Chelsea talent Josh Brooking could be ready for his first loan move ever away from Stamford Bridge to get a taste of senior football.

Brooking has amassed 75 appearances as a centre-back for both the Chelsea U21s and U18s, helping himself to two goals from the back along the way.

McKenna could swoop in for the young English defender to bolster his centre-back positions and give first-teamers Luke Woolfenden and Cameron Burgess some friendly competition, both players in question always guaranteed starters under their manager.

When the fixture schedule becomes congested towards the end of December, Brooking's potential addition could prove to be a masterstroke and allow the Ipswich manager more freedom with his line-up selection in the New Year.

3 Leo Castledine

The standout performer for Chelsea U21s from this current Premier League 2 campaign, Leo Castledine could be in line for a loan move away to an EFL club soon to show off his talents at a senior level.

Casteldine's numbers for the youthful Blues are staggering, contributing to ten goals this season for Chelsea from only eight games played – scoring four times and assisting a further six goals, the attacking midfielder arguably outgrowing his current age bracket.

McKenna's side could do with some reinforcements in central attacking midfield, Chaplin is operating there at this current point in time in a second striker style role but Castledine would – much like Brooking – keep another first-team figure on his toes if he was signed.

The 18-year-old is tipped to have a very bright future in the game, Ipswich Town in their current free-flowing state going forward also a perfect environment for the teenager to come into and grow from.

Keith Downie drops worrying Newcastle team news update before PSG clash

Newcastle United have been dealt another potential injury blow ahead of their Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain, according to journalist Keith Downie.

Newcastle's injury crisis continues…

The Magpies had such high hopes going into this season, having finished fourth in the Premier League last time around, getting back into the Champions League in the process. A 5-1 win at home to Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the campaign did little to dampen the optimism at St James' Park, but since then, Newcastle have been hit with a string of injury problems.

Eddie Howe has had to make do without endless key men for significant periods of the season already, with the likes of Sven Botman and Dan Burn influential absentees at the back. In midfield, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton have been out at different times, while attacking pair Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak have struggled to consistently stay fit and new signing Harvey Barnes has barely played.

On top of that, Sandro Tonali's 10-month ban for betting offences has rubbed salt in Newcastle wounds, and Howe will be desperate for a lot more fortune in the availability department between now and the end of the season.

PSG vs Newcastle team news and updates

Taking to X, Downie claimed that Sean Longstaff is not in Paris with his Newcastle teammates ahead of the clash with PSG, joining Joe Willock on the sidelines and paving the way for teenager Lewis Miley to start.

kalvin-phillips-sean-longstaff-newcastle-opinion

"No Sean Longstaff or Joe Willock here in Paris, meaning 17-year-old Lewis Miley is set to make his first Champions League start in the Parc Des Princes tomorrow night."

This is just another update that sums up the scarcely believable bad luck that Newcastle have encountered with injuries this season, with Longstaff someone who could be a huge miss against PSG.

While not necessarily a player who fills column inches, the 26-year-old brings industry and underrated quality in the middle of the park, with Howe praising him recently and talking up his chances of getting into the England squad:

“I haven’t spoken with Sean in any great detail about the England squad or his dreams and aims but I’d encourage it for him because I think he is good enough. I think he’s got everything depending on what system you want to play but for us, he perfectly fits the No. 8 role that we’re using him in."

Losing Longstaff to injury is bad enough for Newcastle, but the fact that such a young player looks like he will have to fill in is an added concern, considering Miley only has five first-team appearances to his name for the Magpies. It will be a huge test of his maturity in a daunting atmosphere, despite his excellent performance against Chelsea.

Some may point towards the extra games this season as a reason for Newcastle's injuries, but while a few fitness issues can be caused by too much football, the number of casualties since August almost beggars belief.

Kurtis Patterson and Jon Holland shine on another disappointing day for Sri Lankans

The visiting batsmen ended without a half-century between them in either innings, after Kurtis Patterson smacked his second unbeaten hundred of the match

The Sri Lankan batsmen ended the three-day practice match in Hobart without a half-century between them in either innings, as they stumbled against the left-arm spin of Jon Holland on day three. The visitors had in fact been modest the entire day, taking only one wicket in their 32.5 overs with the ball before stuttering to 131 for 6 in their second innings. Their only solace is that the their tormentors on day three – Kurtis Patterson, who cracked a second unbeaten century in the game, and Holland, who took 4 for 28 – are not in Australia’s Test squad.Only Lahiru Thirimanne, who is essentially auditioning to open alongside Dimuth Karunaratne, made a score of significance for the Sri Lankans, making 46 off 121 balls. Nos. 4 to 7 fell in fairly quick succession to Holland, with Dhananjaya de Silva and Sadeera Samarawickrama picking up their second disappointing scores in the match, making 2 and 6 respectively. What was worse for the Sri Lankans was that Roshen Silva, who was batting on 23, was forced to retire hurt.Earlier in the day, Marnus Labuschagne, who may be in Australia’s XI in the first Test at the Gabba, completed a half-century, having begun the day on 33. Lahiru Kumara dismissed him for 50 off 101 balls, but that would be the last wicket the Sri Lankans would take in the day, as Patterson struck 102 not out off 136 balls, to go with his 157 not out off 212 deliveries in the first innings. Patterson was involved in an unbroken 90-run stand for the fourth wicket, to which partner Will Pucovski’s contribution was 33 off 70.Perhaps not wanting to risk their frontline seamers, however, the Sri Lankans bowled only Kumara in extended spells on day three, with Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal and Kasun Rajitha bowled only for a handful of overs. The first Test starts on Thursday.

Mohammad Amir peeved by Sarfraz Ahmed's criticism

If Sarfraz Ahmed’s criticism of his bowlers at the conclusion of the Cape Town Test was intended to provoke a response, he might have played a masterstroke. After two sessions of South African domination on the first day at the Wanderers, Pakistan, spearheaded by Mohammad Amir, dragged themselves back into the contest. In the most commanding passage of play with the ball Pakistan have enjoyed on this tour, they took the last seven South African wickets for just 33 runs, bowling them out for 262, a below-par total according to Aiden Markram.Sarfraz had publicly and robustly questioned the lower pace of his bowlers as compared to South Africa’s after Cape Town, an approach that had raised eyebrows at the time because Pakistan’s struggle to be competitive was more firmly rooted in their batting. On the first day of the series in Centurion, after the visitors had been bowled out for 181, they had reduced South Africa to 44 for 4, and bowled them out for 223. In the second innings, Pakistan slumped from 101 for 1 to 190 all out, leading Mickey Arthur to have a stern word with the batsmen. In the second Test, Pakistan found themselves bowled out for 177 on the first day, though this time the bowlers failed to restrict South Africa to a total that would have kept the game competitive.Amir, appearing at the end of the first day’s play at the Wanderers, was prickly when probed about his captain’s comments. “Please leave this question,” he shot back. “Leave this question. Are we done?” Five minutes into his press conference, he walked out.ESPNcricinfo understands that Amir was especially peeved by Sarfraz’s censorious remarks in the aftermath of Cape Town, which he understood to be more pointedly directed at him than any of the other bowlers. According to , Amir bowled 61% of his deliveries in the 120-132 kph range, which meant his bowling in Cape Town was the slowest of his career. The other bowlers are also understood to not be especially pleased with the remarks and, crucially, it was an assessment that others in the team set-up did not share. Amir’s curt response suggests that this story may have some distance to run.Sarfraz himself has been under pressure, both for the team’s performances under him as well as his own batting form: a pair in the first Test, 53 and 6 at Cape Town. And given how publicly frustrated and harangued he can appear to be by his bowlers and fielders, this development will not help.At least for the first two sessions today it looked as if the bowlers were not responding well to the criticism. It was a spell of play where Amir admitted the bowlers hadn’t been on the top of their game.”The first two sessions we didn’t bowl well,” he said. “But after tea, we made a plan that we had to bowl wicket to wicket and we have to control run rate so we can get wickets. So that was the idea and I think we were successful.”This wicket is far better than previous wickets. If you settle in, you can get the runs and wickets. But I always believe when you stick with the basics whether you’re a bowler or batsmen, you can get the reward.”

Spurs receive transfer enquiry for "worst of the bunch" Mourinho signing

Tottenham Hotspur have received an enquiry to ask whether they would be willing to sell one of their loan players permanently in January, according to a reliable journalist.

Tottenham ins and outs

The Lilywhites sanctioned the sales of nine players during the previous transfer window, with four of those being on a permanent basis, while the remaining five were sent out on loan for the rest of the season in order to increase either their experience and game time or simply their price tag.

Permanent Exits

Loan Moves

Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)

Djed Spence (Leeds United)

Harry Winks (Leicester City)

Tanguy Ndombele (Galatasaray)

Davinson Sanchez (Galatasaray)

Sergio Reguilon (Manchester United)

Lucas Moura (Sao Paulo)

Joe Rodon (Leeds United)

Japhet Tanganga (FC Augsburg)

Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou also have Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Hugo Lloris and Brandon Austin who will have all reached the expiration of their deals upon the conclusion of the campaign, so they could additionally soon be heading for the exit door (Tottenham contracts).

Back in 2020, Sergio Reguilon first put pen to paper in the capital from Real Madrid, but the left-back has found it extremely difficult to nail down a place in the starting line-up since joining having only made 67 appearances over the course of the past three years (Transfermarkt – Reguilon statistics).

The Spain international has therefore been sent out on the road temporarily on two occasions, the first time being to Atletico Madrid and the most recent to Premier League rivals Manchester United, but there’s a chance that the 27-year-old’s spell could be cut short at Old Trafford.

Borussia Dortmund want Reguilon

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Patrick Berger, Borussia Dortmund are keen on Reguilon and they have already registered their interest in him ahead of January.

The second left-back that the black-yellows have on the note is Sergio Reguilon. The 26-year-old is currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United, but only played there once over the full 90 minutes in the Premier League.

"Interesting: Reguilon has a clause in the contract with which he can terminate the loan himself at any time. The Spaniard could become an issue in the next few days if BVB works in. Dortmund has already inquired about the player.”

Manchester United's loan defender Sergio Reguilon.

Sell "worst of the bunch" Reguilon while you have the chance

At Man United, Reguilon currently ranks as Erik Ten Hag’s 13th overall best-performing player out of 26 squad members, so he’s not quite been able to make the huge impact that he would have hoped for when deciding to leave Tottenham (WhoScored – Man United statistics).

The Madrid native, who is naturally left-footed, has also failed to record a single goal or assist during his time with the Red Devils, so considering that he hasn't proved what he’s capable of or showcased his talents when handed the opportunity to do so really says it all.

According to Spurs expert John Wenham, Reguilon is the “worst of the bunch” from Jose Mourinho's crop of players and "so average it's untrue", so the hierarchy would be making completely the right decision to sanction his sale for good while they still have a chance to earn some cash from his departure.

The former centre-back allegedly racially abused Anton Ferdinand during a game between Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea at Loftus Road in 2011. Terry was charged over the incident but was cleared in court, however, he received a four-game ban and fined £220,000 by the Football Association as a result. And the 43-year-old says the 13-year spat shows no sign of abating.

He said on William Hill's Up Front With Simon Jordan: "Since then I've tried to speak to Rio, who doesn't want to talk to me at all. I've seen him on the beach in Dubai and he refused to speak to me. I think it could have been addressed and dealt with a lot better if I'm honest."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Terry also revealed in the interview he tried to speak to Anton about the incident 13 years ago.

He added: "I tried to make contact with Anton that evening after the game and I basically got shut down instantly from all of them. I knew Anton, we were mates, we knew each other and always got on well. Obviously, I got on well with Rio. We could have done something that was more powerful than what came about in the end. And that's probably my disappointment because it's [racism] is in the game. Clearly in the stadiums and all of that now that we need to get out for sure. We could have done something very powerful as a group of players, not only us but everybody else I think at the time."

"Really bad news…" – Pundit reacts to "huge blow" for Southampton

An injury setback to an important Southampton player acts as a "huge blow" for the club, according to pundit Carlton Palmer.

Ross Stewart's struggles at Southampton

The Saints look well-placed for a promotion push in the Championship this season, sitting fourth in the table and eight points adrift of the automatic places. They have had to make do without summer signing Ross Stewart for almost the entire campaign to date, however, with the 27-year-old suffering a miserable time with injuries, being limited to just two substitute appearances in the league that have totalled only 17 minutes.

There were such high hopes for Stewart when he joined Southampton from Sunderland during the transfer window, following an excellent spell for the Black Cats, but it hasn't worked out at all yet. The fact that he arrived with an injury did make it a risk, though.

Now, the Saints attacker has suffered another injury blow, however, with a two-month spell on the sidelines expected after picking up an issue against Huddersfield Town late last month, with the player seeing a specialist.

Ross Stewart injury a "huge blow"

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer reacted to this latest injury setback regarding Stewart, admitting it is a "huge blow" for both the player and Russell Martin.

Former Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.

"It’s bad news, really bad news for Southampton with the latest injury to Ross Stewart. “I always thought this was a gamble, it wasn’t just a hamstring injury or something like that, it was an Achilles tendon injury. He was going to be on the sidelines for some considerable time.

"I know they jumped the gun because they believed other clubs would be looking for his signature, but I don’t think anyone would have signed him until he had proven his fitness. Achilles injuries are very hard to recover from, and hopefully Ross will come back from them, but they’re long-term.

"So, it was a huge blow for the manager, after the club spent £10m on signing Stewart, and he may need to go to the board and convince them to give him money to buy another striker. They’re going very well in the Championship, they’ve got a real chance of automatic promotion. Hopefully, the board will understand, they obviously took a gamble, and it hasn’t worked out. A huge blow for Ross, and for Southampton."

This is such a cruel blow for Stewart, who will be desperate to prove his worth in a Southampton shirt and play a key role in their promotion push this season.

Southampton could find dream Armstrong partner by unleashing "monster" in 2024

This Southampton flop could be given another opportunity to impress on his return to St Mary’s next year.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 6, 2023

Having got himself back fit again, the former Sunderland ace will now have to show plenty of mental resolve in his latest recovery, hopefully returning for the business end of the season and making some big contributions.

Away from Stewart's personal setback, it is also clearly a big issue for Martin, who will have to make do without a big-name attacker for an extended period once again. Having him available could make life so much easier for the manager, in terms of rotation at a busy time during the festive period, but the Saints will again have to get by with the current available players.

Vinay Kumar's last-wicket heroics give Karnataka the lead

Replying to Rajasthan’s 224, Karnataka were 166 for 9 before Vinay Kumar and last man Ronit More added a precious 97 runs

Saurabh Somani at the Chinnaswamy16-Jan-2019Halfway into their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Rajasthan, there’s a familiar face on top of Karnataka’s charts for the season. Except, Vinay Kumar is heading the wrong chart. He’s got the highest average in the team, a quite stunning 62.40, nearly ten points higher than Manish Pandey’s 52.80, the next best.Vinay’s bowling returns are 11 wickets in six matches at 31.09. If he was a batting allrounder, these numbers would mark a legendary season. But for a man whose primary suit is bowling, the returns with the ball are underwhelming and the runs are a bonus. The bonus could save Karnataka in their quarter-final, though. On day two, Vinay came in 152 for 7 after Rajasthan had made 224 in their first innings. Karnataka quickly slipped to 166 for 9 and Rajasthan were looking at a decisive lead, with Karnataka to bat last. Vinay ended the day 83 not out and had put on 97 with Ronit More for the last wicket, giving Karnataka a lead of 39. More’s contribution was 10 off 59 balls, while Vinay made 77 off 128, farming the strike expertly. Even the 10 runs More made were far more than a career first-class average of 4.14 would have led anyone to expect. And the 59 balls he faced were unprecedented, his previous highest being 37 balls. Egged on and cajoled by Vinay, More outdid himself.”It was very important for me to be there, as the senior. We discussed adding runs in blocks of five to ten and building a partnership,” Vinay said at stumps. “I needed to plan according to the match situation. I know Ronit can defend, but if the ball keeps low he might have played across. That was there in my mind.”The opposition will definitely look to bring fielders in in the last two balls and not give a single. I was ready to hit a boundary off the fifth ball and take a single off the sixth. That was the plan and it came good for us. But see, how much ever I perform, the same credit goes to Ronit. If he wouldn’t have stood there, we couldn’t have got a 97-run partnership.”Vinay, who has two first-class centuries, said he had been taking his batting ‘more seriously’, but reproached his team’s top order for not lasting long enough to capitalise on run-scoring opportunities.”I’ve always maintained batting is very important (for bowlers). Especially nowadays, the lower middle order and the bowlers have to perform for the team,” he said. “Adding those 40-50 runs at the end always has value for the side. You can see nowadays, for any team if the bowlers contribute 50-60 runs it makes a big difference. I was working on my batting. When I started my cricket I was a batsman and then I became a fast bowler. Nowadays, seeing all the competition, I’m taking batting more seriously.”We could have batted a little better. It was not doing that much, but odd balls were doing a bit. If we could have stayed for that initial period when bowlers were coming hard at you, after that, when I was batting it became a bit easier. As a bowler, you can bowl 18-20 overs in a day normally, after that your energy will lessen. If we could have tackled those first 10-12 overs, we would have done better.”Vinay’s runs could prove crucial in the second half of the match, with Karnataka having to bat last. And though the former captain said the pitch at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium wasn’t one where 20 wickets should have fallen in two days, he admitted it wasn’t always playing true.”The cracks are a bit wider now and if you hit the cracks it can keep low,” he said. “Definitely it will be difficult. If bowlers can keep it wicket to wicket, and keeping it back of length, the odd ball will keep low. If you can bowl in those areas, it is going to be difficult.”

Spurs starlet "ready to emerge" as key man, importance made "clear" by Ange

One Tottenham starlet is "ready to emerge" as a key player as manager Ange Postecoglou makes it "clear" how important he is to the Spurs cause.

Tottenham vs West Ham

The second in a very difficult triple-header of Lilywhites fixtures commences this evening, as Postecoglou's side face off against London rivals West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs planning January bid for "high energy" star who's "leaving" his club

They’re studying an offer for next month.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 7, 2023

Spurs sealed a dramatic 3-3 draw in their last game against champions Man City, courtesy of a late 90th-minute equaliser from Dejan Kulusevski, but there's barely any time for them to rest with the Hammers set to present a tough test.

Tottenham are also still minus a few key players who aren't expected back until 2024, like James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, but one huge boost is the return of defender Cristian Romero.

The Argentine looks set to partner either one of Ben Davies or Emerson Royal at the heart of Tottenham's back four, and it's highly likely we'll see a similar attacking line-up to the one which took on City at the Etihad.

"Cristian is available," said Postecoglou on the latest Spurs team news (via football.london).

"Nothing the other night in terms of disrupting this preparation. From the guys out, Pape is back training. Probably tomorrow will be a bit too soon for him but Sunday I'm pretty sure he'll be available. Richy got five mins other day and felt short physically but in terms of where he is he's available. All the rest I don't expect to see back for a while."

The likes of Brennan Johnson and Bryan Gil have impressed since being handed the nod in wake of Tottenham's injury issues, and the latter turned a few heads with his showing against City after overcoming his own fitness problems.

Gil made only his second start of the Premier League campaign at Eastlands, and after a few loan spells at Valencia and Sevilla since joining in 2021, the Spaniard will be eager to finally showcase his potential in a Spurs shirt.

Postecoglou has made "clear" Gil's importance

richarlison-bryan-gil-tottenham-opinion

As per reports out of Spain, Tottenham head coach Postecoglou has made "clear" Gil's importance with the 22-year-old starlet now "ready to emerge" as a key player.

Postecoglou has also praised the attacker's determination and commitment, with the Australian believing he has all the necessary potential to become a success at Spurs. It will be very interesting to see if Gil establishes himself as a regular starter, especially amid Richarlison's steady recovery.

Gets fouled often

Likes to play short passes

Likes to tackle

Commits fouls often

The Brazilian was handed his first league minutes since pubic bone surgery against City on Sunday, but Postecoglou's admission that he still feels short physically could hand Gil an opportunity to move ahead of him in the pecking order with assured performances. And this continues with West Ham tonight.
