Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc to the fore as Australia thump New Zealand

As it happenedBig-game temperament, they said. On a decent run of form, with players coming back in who will strengthen them further. Know how to win a World Cup (or five). Plenty of observers warned the real Australia would turn up at this tournament, though fewer predicted they would be the first team to secure a semi-final place. But after brushing aside the early pace-setters in this round-robin format, Australia look increasingly – and menacingly – close to their best once again.Watch on Hotstar (India only): Highlights of Alex Carey’s match-turning inningsNew Zealand removed Australia’s openers cheaply, chipped away at the middle order and then finished off the innings with a Trent Boult hat-trick – the first in ODIs at Lord’s. That Australia managed to make as many as 243 for 9 was largely down to a century partnership between Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey, the latter batting more fluently than anyone else on the day. Mitchell Starc then corralled a record third World Cup five-for, as a relentless, ruthless and (admittedly) slightly hotchpotch attack dismantled New Zealand.Alex Carey pulls to the boundary as he takes the fight to New Zealand•Getty Images

The key wicket, that of Kane Williamson, was claimed by Starc, whose 5 for 26 saw him overtake his tournament-leading tally of 23 wickets from the 2015 World Cup. New Zealand’s captain had not previously been dismissed by Starc in ODIs – a record which included their group-stage encounter four years ago, when Williamson thundered the final six that sealed a barnstorming one-wicket win in Auckland. At Lord’s, it never got anywhere near so close.Having recovered from 92 for 5, Khawaja anchoring the innings from the fifth over to the 49th – when he became the first part of Boult’s late-swinging yorker tryptich – Australia simply preyed on New Zealand’s insecurities with the bat. Williamson’s 40 included being dropped twice and Ross Taylor was the only other player to get past 20 as the challenge of going at almost five an over on a tacky pitch proved too much.WATCH on Hotstar (US only): Full match highlightsAustralia captain Aaron Finch was able to cycle through as many as four part-time bowlers, including himself, as his three premier quicks plus the orthodox spin of Nathan Lyon kept New Zealand tied down. Never was the sense greater that momentum was with Australia than when Steven Smith was brought on to bowl an over of legspin and promptly claimed his first ODI wicket in five years, as Colin de Grandhomme picked out long-off.Finch, Smith, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell combined for figures of 9-0-43-1 and that in itself provided a measure of Australia’s eventual dominance. None of the big four went at more than 3.60 an over, with Jason Behrendorff backing up his five-star performance against England by removing both New Zealand openers in an opening spell that was extended to nine overs; and Nathan Lyon claimed his maiden World Cup wicket to suggest Australia have found the right balance for the slower surfaces that have predominated in the tournament.New Zealand were left to ponder another stuttering batting display, which leaves them facing a potentially nervous final group game against England next week. The move to bring in Henry Nicholls for Colin Munro at the top of the order brought only limited success – although an opening stand worth 29 was still New Zealand’s third-best of the competition – while despite starting well with the ball, Ish Sodhi’s legspin was underused and Williamson resorted to bowling himself for seven overs during the pivotal stand between Khawaja and Carey.Williamson perhaps reasoned that his offbreaks were more likely to trouble the pair of Australia left-handers – with both Sodhi and Mitchell Santner turning the ball into the batsmen – but it reinforced the nagging sense that New Zealand are overly reliant on their captain. He did eventually remove Carey, caught at cover looking to press the accelerator in the final Powerplay, though by that time Australia had fought their way back into the contest. Khawaja was largely becalmed, scoring only two boundaries in his first 100 balls, but he proved an adept foil for the more dynamic Carey, who continued his excellent form by scoring more than two-thirds of the runs during their 107-run stand. On a day highlighted by several brilliant catches – Martin Guptill’s to dismiss Smith, James Neesham’s off his own bowling to remove Glenn Maxwell, and Smith off Tom Latham all deserved a mention in dispatches – it was a missed chance that may have proved most significant. Khawaja’s second ball, driving at Boult, flew hard and low off the outside edge only for Guptill to shell it going one-handed to his right from second slip.On a roasting day in the capital, Australia had chosen to bat but, for only the second time in the tournament, Finch and David Warner could not provide a significant foundation. Boult rapped Finch on the knee roll and Warner was the first of a brace of short-ball breakthroughs for Lockie Ferguson, with Smith then plucked brilliantly by Guptill after pulling sweetly but within range of short fine leg; but although neither Stoinis nor Maxwell could produce the goods in the middle order – Australia’s one area of minor concern – they nevertheless found a way to get away. The innings juddered to a halt as Boult struck the stumps of Khawaja and Starc, then had Behrendorff lbw to complete the first World Cup hat-trick by a New Zealander. But it was Australia who ended the day emphatically on top.

Erling Haaland and the star names who failed to qualify for Euro 2024

The tournament promises to be full of drama, but a number of top players will only be able to watch on from afar

Will Kylian Mbappe lead France to their third European Championship title? Or will Harry Kane help bring almost 60 years of hurt to a close for England? Spain and Portugal will also be in the mix, while Germany are poised for a resurgence on home soil, and it would be foolish to write off the likes of Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Lamine Yamal, Joao Neves, Jamal Musiala and Xavi Simons will be among the youngsters aiming to make a mark, while veterans such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Olivier Giroud, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric look to write another glorious chapter in their illustrious career stories. However, there are a host of other star names who didn't even manage to book a ticket – despite the fact the 2024 tournament is able to welcome 24 teams.

Through a combination of misfortune, thin resources and, in certain cases, poor performance, some of Europe's brightest talents have been forced to take the summer off. GOAL lists the top 10 players who failed to qualify, starting with a certain Norwegian terminator…

GettyErling Haaland (Norway)

It would be a travesty if the world's best striker never played at a major international tournament, but it's already starting to feel like a distinct possibility for Erling Haaland. The 23-year-old scored six goals in qualifying for Norway, but they still couldn't reach the play-offs, and finished a distant six points behind Group A runners-up Scotland.

It might have been different had Haaland not picked up an injury that limited him to just five appearances, but Norway have become far too reliant on the Manchester City superstar. They will have to become a more well-rounded side to make the 2026 World Cup, with only three of the extra 16 places at the finals being allocated to European nations.

AdvertisementGettyMartin Odegaard (Norway)

Not even the presence of Arsenal playmaker Martin Odegaard could lift Norway, whose last appearance at the Euros came way back in 2000. By the former Real Madrid man's high standards, he underperformed in qualifying, registering just two goal involvements, and wasn't nearly as influential in his role as captain for the national team as he has been on a weekly basis at the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta will be glad that his prized asset is getting a proper rest in the off-season, but a player of Odegaard's class belongs on the biggest stage. The 25-year-old is a master technician capable of opening defences up at will with his incisive passing, he just hasn't shown it often enough for his country; though perhaps that will change on the back of his most impressive season yet at club level.

GettyEvan Ferguson (Ireland)

It's easy to forget that Evan Ferguson only made his debut for Ireland in November 2022, as he has since become a regular in the Brighton first team while reportedly emerging as a transfer target for a host of top clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea. He's now up to 12 caps for his country, and is seen as the leading light of their next generation, which puts a lot of pressure on the 19-year-old's shoulders.

Ferguson could hardly have experienced a tougher first European Championship qualifying campaign, with Ireland ultimately finishing way behind France, the Netherlands and Greece in Group C. Still, the Brighton man found the net twice and notched an assist in six games, which wasn't a bad return, and Ireland can look to the future with optimism as he continues his rapid rise to prominence in the Premier League.

GettyDejan Kulusevski (Sweden)

Dejan Kulusevski was one of Tottenham's best performers in 2023-24, as he helped them achieve a fifth-place Premier League finish under Ange Postecoglou. However, he wasn't as impressive for Sweden, who failed to qualify for the European Championship for the first time since 1996.

Belgium and Austria left Sweden trailing in their wake in Group F, and Kulusevski only managed to score once, while also playing the full 90 minutes of their embarrassing 3-0 loss to Azerbaijan. The former Juventus man has yet to really deliver in the famous yellow shirt, but he still has his prime years ahead of him at 24, and will be a big part of new manager Jon Dahl Tomasson's set-up.

Defender praised by Jamie Carragher as Tottenham allegedly push to sign him

Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has lavished praise on a defender as Tottenham allegedly push for his signing.

Spurs want another centre-back after Dragusin

Despite agreeing a £25 million deal for Radu Dragusin from Genoa in the January window, reports have suggested that manager Ange Postecoglou wants another centre-back at N17.

Suggestion £26m striker praised by Harry Kane could now join Tottenham

He’s got real potential.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 20, 2024

Dragusin's arrival comes as a welcome relief for Spurs who were at one point suffering from a real injury crisis at centre-half. Indeed, both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero were unavailable for sizeable chunks of the mid-season, with Postecoglou forced to play a makeshift pairing of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies at various stages.

While van de Ven and Romero are both available again, it's clear that one or two key injuries can leave Spurs short of options in a very sudden fashion. Eric Dier also departed for Bayern Munich in January, so perhaps bringing in another defender would be wise.

Tottenham have been linked with a fair few options already, like Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly and Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite most recently.

The former's deal expires this summer as things stand, so he could be available for Spurs to sign on a Bosman, unless they're beaten to the punch by clubs abroad who can agree a pre-contract right now. Branthwaite, though, is a particularly interesting case as the 21-year-old plays a key role under Sean Dyche at Goodison Park.

The homegrown defender is even being chased by Real Madrid, according to The Daily Mail, who also claim Tottenham are "pushing" to sign Branthwaite and are among the sides making a "most concerted" effort for this summer.

Branthwaite has been in very impressive form since returning from a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last season, with more praise being thrown in his direction.

Carragher praises "special" Branthwaite as Spurs push

Speaking to Sky Sports on Monday, as transcribed by TBR, pundit Carragher has called Branthwaite a "special" player amid claims Spurs want to sign him.

“I think he is [special]. And what is really special as well is the amount of centre-backs we have in the Premier League aged 21 or younger," said Carragher.

“I remember being a young lad going in myself at Liverpool and it’s an unforgiven position, I had to go to full-back for the next three or four years and then go back to centre-back, so you can see the quality we have.

“Branthwaite has been outstanding, Murillo I think has been outstanding. But I think this lad has been pretty special and he’s a big part of why in my eyes Everton still have a great chance of staying up, him and his partnership with Tarkowski.”

Amid the Toffees' fierce relegation battle, their potential drop to the Championship could give Tottenham a big opportunity to tempt him down south.

Eze, 25, was deeply touched when he saw a video of the mural being painted. The artwork, which captures his likeness in stunning detail, has impressed the Crystal Palace star. "Nah this is deep man," Eze exclaimed.

"In the ends as well… this is insane man, this is insane. Your picture's on a wall now somewhere, someone has painted you. It's in the ends as well so that's huge. My family is gonna be out there taking a picture soon. Nah, grateful man. I feel like I'm representing the whole of south! That's what it feels like, probably not but it feels like I am. Glory to God.

"In south London, that's what they do man, they always try and celebrate someone. So to have my own now. My boys live there as well that's what's mad. My whole group chat was going off. That's a big blessing man, big blessing."

Street artist Mr. Meana, who created the mural, faced unique challenges due to the texture of the brickwork. "It was difficult to get the natural look because the brickwork is a lot deeper than we are used to. So it was a little bit harder work than usual. But you know you've got to earn it sometimes. Right?" He is a local lad and we believe he's a fantastic prospect, a great player."

Spurs must ditch 5/10 star alongside Bentancur after Brighton

Next weekend, Tottenham Hotspur will face Wolverhampton Wanderers on home turf. It could be coined as a 'winnable' fixture for Ange Postecoglou's side, who have won their past five home matches in the Premier League.

Of course, it's rarely that easy in English football and Wolves' last-gasp turnaround to sink Spurs out of nothing proves the dangers that lay embedded throughout the pathway to success come summer.

But Postecoglou will be emboldened by the return of many absentees since the new year, plus the turn in form that has put a poor patch throughout November and December in the past and has placed Tottenham back in top-four contention.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

Indeed, Brennan Johnson's late winner against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend proved pivotal as Aston Villa lost their hold on fourth place one day later, losing 2-1 to Manchester United in a thrilling encounter at Villa Park.

Johnson, a £47.5m summer signing from Nottingham Forest, has now struck home across his past two substitute appearances in the top-flight, indicative of a fresh weight of depth that has unshackled Postecoglou's free-flowing attacking ideology.

Spurs missed out on Werner upgrade in "brilliant" Premier League star

The Lilywhites were reportedly eyeing up the Wolverhampton Wanderers whiz last month.

ByDan Emery Feb 12, 2024

Now, the brooding clouds have scudded away and, suddenly, Tottenham have options. No longer is the squad constrained by injuries, suspensions and mid-season international tournaments.

For this reason, perhaps it's time for certain stars such as Timo Werner to return to the bench…

Why Timo Werner must be dropped

Throughout the early phase of Postecoglou's reign, it was clear that a talented squad had married into the Australian's expressive tactical set-up, but the tenuous thread banding it all together always threatened to snap and so it did when the absences started mounting after a stunning start.

The defence was always going to be chairman Daniel Levy's priority heading into the January transfer window and the £27m addition of Radu Dragusin from Genoa confirmed this notion not two weeks in.

Dragusin had been pursued for weeks and a deal always looked likely to reach completion, but the Romanian wasn't the first to join the fold, with Werner arriving from RB Leipzig on a loan deal until the end of the term to bolster the frontline, with an option to buy for around £15m.

A Champions League winner with Chelsea, Werner, aged 27, always impressed with his fleet-footed gait and dynamic ability but has been marred by positional unawareness and a lack of potency in goalscoring moments, something on display for Tottenham thus far.

After five matches in all competitions, the Germany international has supplied two assists and is yet to score, sort of capturing the above-mentioned traits that many expected from him.

There's no doubting that he's a valuable option and has opened up a new dimension to the Spurs attack but is he worthy of a starting berth on the biggest occasions? Perhaps not.

As per Sofascore, the 5 foot 11 star has taken 2.5 shots, created 1.5 key passes and averaged 3.5 ball recoveries per Premier League game so far, crisp in possession with an 84% pass success rate.

These are not bad metrics by any stretch and Werner clearly makes an impact down the left flank, driving play forward, keeping it tidy and creating chances for his peers, but after four successive starts in the Premier League, it's time for a place on the bench.

Spurs forward Timo Werner.

Last time out, against the Seagulls, he completed just over an hour before being replaced – alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski – by Heung-min Son, Yves Bissouma and Johnson.

Kulusevski is the attack's engine and is considered among the club's most important assets but Bentancur has assumed quite the heavy load since returning from injury problems that had ravaged his progress throughout 2023, and with Pape Matar Sarr scoring and Bissouma making his return, it might be time for the Uruguayan to spend a bit of time on the bench.

There's a case that the starting players are worn out, with Son and Bissouma returning from international duty and significantly strengthening the squad in doing so, and for Werner, this was especially so, with football.london's Alasdair Gold handing him a 5/10 match rating.

The journalist wrote: 'A quiet first half with the odd little run and pass without really threatening. Started the second half well though with a strong run past a few challenges before a low deflected effort wide. His end product remains inconsistent.'

A quiet first half indeed, with Lilywhites shot-stopper Guglielmo Vicario even having more touches (44) than Werner managed (41) across his 61 minutes of action.

The best option to replace Werner

With Son producing the weighted, curling cross-field pass to provide Johnson with the space to rifle home in the dying embers, it's pretty much a no-brainer that the South Korea international must be handed a starting berth going forward.

Not too long ago, a case could have been made to field Werner on the left and have Son occupy the focal role in the centre, but Richarlison has posted nine goals from nine matches in the Premier League so his place at centre-forward is pretty much locked in.

Son's not exactly ineffectual on the wing either. The 31-year-old club captain has scored 12 goals and supplied six assists from 21 league games this season and left Postecoglou gushing over his "world-class" ability after his match-winning moment on Saturday.

It was yet another creative decision to pay off handsomely for his side, and that's without even touching on his deadliness as a first-rate goalscorer.

There's a case to be made that Son is one of the game's finest natural finishers, taking just 2.5 shots per game in the Premier League this year compared to Erling Haaland's 5.8 and Mohamed Salah's 3.3.

Tottenham captain Heung-min Son.

With James Maddison fully fit once again, Son can release the creative burden he has held for much of the campaign and focus on his most effective threat on the field: bypassing goalkeepers' nets with alarming incisiveness.

Of course, he's hardly averse to supplementing his teammates, is he? And there's no question about the £190k-per-week machine's technical ability and tactical intelligence.

Werner will start again and has proved himself a good option for Postecoglou to have, but the time has come for Son to reclaim his rightful place at the heart of Spurs' exploits and after such a sublime assist on his first game back from a disappointing and likely dispiriting Asia Cup tournament, his unparalleled place in this Tottenham team is underpinned.

Lionesses goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck finally joins Barcelona on free transfer after emotional departure from Man City

Lionesses goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck has officially joined Barcelona on a free transfer, three weeks on from her emotional exit at Manchester City.

Roebuck exit announced by Man City last monthNow officially unveiled at Barca 'Excited' to begin new challengeGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Roebuck called time on her nine-year stint with the Manchester City senior side as she decided not to renew her contract with the Women's Super League runners-up. The Sheffield-born goalkeeper made 93 appearances with the senior team having played as second fiddle for the majority of her tenure. She will now be taking on a new challenge in Spain, with Barcelona confirming her arrival at the club on Wednesday.

AdvertisementWHAT ROEBUCK SAID

"I am very excited, I had been waiting for this opportunity for a long time," the Lionesses keeper told Barca's official website. "I am very happy to be here. You could say that now everything has fallen into place, it was the perfect time to come. I want to go private and live a new experience. There's no better place to do it than here, so I'm grateful for the opportunity."

Roebuck added on what she will bring to the team: "I like to play with the ball at my feet and this is the perfect team to do that. They like to have possession and play from the back, so I hope to bring my style."

LEAVING MAN CITY BEHIND

Roebuck said a final goodbye to City fans in an emotional statement at the end of May, having spent almost a decade on the books of the English side. "Manchester became my home 9 years ago and I'm leaving with nothing but pride," she wrote on social media.

"To the fans, thank you for growing with me. Since the age of 15, I've been welcomed with open arms and loved every second of representing your club. We've enjoyed so many special times together – FA and League Cups being absolute highlights, as well as playing Champions League football. You give up everything to support us and it's truly appreciated.

"I hope you know I gave everything each time I played for this club that I consider home and will now support for life To my teammates you guys are special people and will continue to shine, I have no doubts. Things don't always have the perfect ending but I can reflect on some of the best moments of my life playing in blue."

Roebuck is likely to join forces with fellow Lionesses stars Kiera Walsh and Lucy Bronze at Barcelona, though the former is being touted for a big transfer to Arsenal in the WSL. 8/10 Leeds star outshone Patrick Bamford vs Norwich

Leeds United closed out their January run of fixtures in th Championship with a fourth straight victory, overcoming a lacklustre Norwich City 1-0 under the lights at Elland Road.

Picking up another three points to put on the board means the Whites are now only two points behind second-place occupied by Ipswich Town, with winnable games to follow to start February versus Bristol City and Rotherham United.

There were a number of standout performers in the assured win over David Wagner's uninspiring Canaries, including goalscorer Patrick Bamford who continued his goalscoring purple patch to steer Daniel Farke's men away from firing an unwanted blank and pile even more pressure onto the Tractor Boys as a result.

Patrick Bamford continues to shine

With four goals in his last five games since being reintroduced into the first team fold this year, Bamford continued to be the focal point in attack for the promotion chasers on Wednesday night.

Found in acres of space free in the box after a delightful Daniel James delivery into the danger area, Bamford had the simple task of connecting with the cross and powering a header in to give Leeds a 1-0 lead early into the first 45 minutes.

The reinvigorated number nine was also useful in his attempts to play others into the contest to try and make the lead more emphatic, registering two key passes during his excellent 90 minutes on the Elland Road turf and only misplacing three of his 26 passes.

Yet, Georginio Rutter was even more unerring in his calmness spraying the ball around the park with ease against the visitors from Norfolk and arguably stole the spotlight away from the 30-year-old centre-forward.

Georginio Rutter's performance in numbers

Not exactly endearing himself to the expectant Leeds fanbase last season as the club suffered relegation, alongside Bamford, Rutter is now a firm fan's favourite in West Yorkshire and for good reason.

The 21-year-old is oozing confidence at this moment in time when he struts onto the field of play, successful with six dribble attempts in the game as Norwich found it hard to keep tabs on the intricate Frenchman foraying forward all night.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

Rutter also helped himself to two key passes in the contest, alongside two accurate long balls in a bid to push his team up the pitch and to help his side not just sit back with a precarious one-goal advantage.

Leeds did get over the line in the end – picking up their 11th clean sheet of the campaign – but they could have had more goals courtesy of their dynamic number 24.

The 21-year-old would have one on-target effort on Angus Gunn's goal in the 1-0 win, with his dogged determination to continually regain the ball also not going unnoticed.

Winning a staggering 13 duels, there's no doubt in Farke's mind that his star Frenchman will continue being a fixed presence in the first team for some time to come after such a tireless display.

Given an 8/10 post-match rating by Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross – with Cross stating that Rutter's trickery constantly 'bamboozled' a stunned Canaries back four – the Leeds number 24 arguably offered more in the win than Bamford.

Farke will want both of his star players firing on all cylinders next month, the West Yorkshire giants still very much in the automatic promotion mix.

Sri Lanka seamer Nuwan Kulasekara retires from international cricket

Sri Lanka seamer Nuwan Kulasekara has retired from international cricket with immediate effect. He remains open to playing global domestic T20 tournaments.Known for his ability to swing the new ball both ways, the 37-year old exits as Sri Lanka’s third-highest ODI wicket-taker among seamers, behind Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga, with 199 wickets in 184 matches. Kulasekara is also the joint second-highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka in T20Is, with 66 wickets in 58 matches, behind Malinga on the list.ALSO READ – The Nuwan Kulasekara profile by Andrew Fidel FernandoKulasekara last represented Sri Lanka in an ODI against Zimbabwe in Hambantota in July 2017 and hasn’t played a competitive game since March 2018.Kulasekara revealed that he had been due to announce his decision immediately after the World Cup but had held off following a special request by Lasith Malinga to play alongside him in one final ODI.”I was going to announce my retirement straight after the World Cup but Lasith Malinga made a special request during the world cup to play alongside me in his final game. As such, I wanted to see if there was any way to make that happen. That’s why my retirement announcement was delayed,” he explained.”I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Lasith for remembering me. It shows great strength for one cricketer to speak about another, and it’s not the first time Lasith has done something like this.”With Malinga set to retire following the first ODI against Bangladesh, Kulasekara revealed that he had followed Malinga in making an official request to SLC to be included in that game. However, with SLC not having responded to either request, Kulasekara said he knew his time was up.”It was because of Lasith’s request that I also made a request to SLC, to see if there was a possibility of being selected in a farewell match. But I don’t think it fit in with SLC’s plans as I haven’t heard back from them.”They did however say that the third ODI will be dedicated to me, even though that’s not what I had requested. What I had asked was whether it was possible to do what Malinga had suggested, and play [with him] in his final game, together. But a 22-man squad had already been selected, and it’s from that squad that the team for the first ODI is going to be selected. So, with the match just a couple of days away, I felt that there was no chance of that happening, which is why I’m announcing my retirement now.”In ODIs, Kulasekara was ranked as the No.1 bowler in March 2009 and nearly four years later, he took career-best ODI figures of 5 for 22 against Australia in Brisbane. Kulasekara, though, wasn’t as effective in Tests and ended with 48 wickets in 21 games, the last of which came in 2014 at Lord’s, where Sri Lanka clung on for a thrilling draw. For a player constantly in the background, a rare moment in the spotlight saw him look back on these moments fondly.”I had the privilege of representing Sri Lanka in every major ICC event between 2007-2014, where the team played in two 50-over World Cup finals, three T20 World Cup finals, including our victorious one in 2014 against India. I was honoured to be the vice-captain of this World Cup-winning team.”There are several instances that come to mind [when I think of my favourite memories on the field]. Bowling the penultimate over of the 2014 World T20 final definitely stands out. Before that, in the first match we played in that tournament against South Africa; I won’t forget bowling the 19th over in that game either. My five wickets against Australia in Brisbane also stands out.”There was also the Test against England at Lord’s in 2006, where [Chaminda] Vaas and I managed to put together a good partnership [of 61 runs in the first innings and then a 105-run stand in the second] to help draw the game [in which Kulasekara also scored 64, his only Test fifty].”I represented my team and nation with the highest amount of pride and admiration; nothing was more important to me than seeing Sri Lanka at the top of world cricket. I have no regrets, every day that I played cricket I was happy, and I leave the sport happily.”

Everton points deduction latest: Journalist shares worrying new update

A worrying new update regarding Everton's points deduction in the Premier League has emerged, courtesy of journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Everton's ten-point deduction

The Blues have suffered so many disappointments this season, with off-field issues threatening to completely derail Sean Dyche's side's campaign as they desperately fight for survival between now and May.

While results have been adequate for much of the season, the ten-point penalty that has come Everton's way has rocked the club, throwing them into the relegation zone in the process. The Merseysiders have never dropped into the Championship since its former Second Division days, but there is now a genuine threat of that happening.

Some reports have even suggested that further punishments could come Everton's way due to their financial breaches, and another deduction would surely be too much to come back from in the relegation battle.

There has also been the ongoing issue surrounding the takeover of the Blues, with 777 Partners still not getting a deal over the line to replace Farhad Moshiri as owner, so it's fair to say that Goodison Park is a tense place to be at the moment.

Worrying new Everton update

According to a new update from Football Insider's O'Rourke, Everton may not be successful in appealing their points deduction, with a decision expected very soon.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri.

"Everton are not likely to receive good news when the results of their appeal against the 10-point deduction for Financial Fair Play breaches is announced, sources have told Football Insider.

"The verdict is set to be announced in the middle of February. That means news on Everton’s potential fate for the 2023-24 campaign may be just days away."

This is another blow in what feels like a constant stream of negative updates this season, although it may not come as a huge surprise that an appeal is unlikely to be successful.

It is a hugely frustrating situation for Dyche and his players, whose performances this season don't warrant being in the relegation zone at all, with a mid-table spot coming their way currently without the 10-point penalty. It can't be easy to remain focused on on-pitch matters, but Everton have to do all they can to get themselves away from danger, preserving their Premier League status for another year.

The idea of dropping into the Championship doesn't bear thinking about, considering the impact it could have on the potential takeover and their finances in general, while the move to Bramley-Moore Dock next year needs to happen with the Blues playing in the top flight, not the second tier.

These clubs had the book thrown at them…

The hope is that the appeal does end up being successful, but the manner of this season suggests that good news won't come Everton's way, making for what could be a stressful next few months in the league, with big matches arriving every week.
