Warner's epic 335 not out overwhelms Pakistan before Starc burst

If the opening day was wretched for Pakistan, the adjectives to describe the second are best left unprinted. There was no humiliation spared, no skillset left unexposed as Australia’s batsmen – led by David Warner’s epic unbeaten 335 – did what they liked to Pakistan for the first half of the day, with the bowlers cutting in on the action in the final session.Warner will grab tomorrow’s headlines, and cement a place in Australian cricketing folklore for his innings, becoming the first triple centurion in the Adelaide Oval’s history, and surpassing Donald Bradman’s 334 which Mark Taylor equaled in 1998. That was when Tim Paine finally took mercy on the hapless visitors, calling his side in just as the cricketing world was settling in to see a serious challenge to Brian Lara’s record 400 not out.Moment of history: David Warner brings up his triple century•Getty Images and Cricket Australia

If that tempted you to decry the pitch a mundane road, the final session would have had you reaching for the emergency brake. Mitchell Starc was one wicket away from a five-fer, while Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins swarmed all over Pakistan early. Regular breakthroughs meant there was never any chance of a partnership building that so much as hinted Pakistan might challenge Australia’s 589 enough to force them in to bat again at some point this Test. When it was time to wind up, Pakistan were 493 runs behind, with the tail already exposed. Babar Azam, predictably, was the lone source of resistance from the other end, but when the umpires called stumps, they might as well have been calling a halt to a boxing match.Pakistan were still seven overs away from the new ball becoming available when the day began, but the signs were ominous in that early half hour. Instead of being able to rein Australia in during that initial spell, Yasir Shah and Iftikhar Ahmed operated ineffectually, with Australia piling on 65 in nine overs of the old ball, scoring more freely than they had across the entirety of the first day. Any pressure they might have felt at the start was already well off when the new pink ball was called for, and the records were quickly stacking up.The 361-run partnership between Warner and Marnus Labuschagne was the second-highest second-wicket stand for Australia in Test cricket, with the pair joining an elite group to have scored 150 in consecutive innings. By the time Shaheen Afridi – again Pakistan’s best bowler – castled Labuschagne’s offstump with a genuinely delightful inswinger, he had amassed 162. Australia were 2 for 369, with Steven Smith walking in. Hardly a sight for sore bowling shoulders.Warner would continue to bring up milestones. He reached 200 and celebrated with the steel of a man only halfway through his journey. Moments later, it seemed, he was raising his bat for 250, which is when he really cut loose as Australia looked to wring every last run out of their innings. Pakistan didn’t help themselves when debutant Muhammad Musa had Warner caught at fourth slip from a no-ball, the second time a Pakistan debutant reprieved Warner in this way this series after Naseem Shah’s overstep in Brisbane.Tim Paine took a brilliant catch to remove Iftikhar Ahmed•Getty Images

Pakistan’s bowling might have been consistently listless, but the extent of Yasir’s nightmare may yet have career-affecting consequences for him. His struggles in the southern hemisphere are well-documented, particularly his record in Australia. But here it almost seemed safer to have Iftikhar bowling instead. He was, after all, “only” going at five per over, while Yasir conceded 197 in his 32 at more than a run-a-ball, unable to keep himself from dragging the ball down several times every over, or feeding them faithfully into the left-handers’ hitting arcs. If, in these past three years, Yasir worked on how to manage a game where wickets come at a premium, it did not show today. After Smith edged a wild hack, Warner and Matthew Wade combined for a breezy 99-run partnership which saw Warner bring up 300 with a pull off Mohammad Abbas – who still wasn’t targeting the stumps – and brought out a celebration so emotive it moved his wife, sitting in the stands, to tears. After that he was even more unconfined, and when he took Abbas for 17 in an over, it really appeared that 400 was going to be given a shot. But when a single to extra cover took him past 334 – to stand second behind Matthew Hayden’s 380 for Australia – Paine emerged from the dressing room and called them in, a cue for Adelaide to stand as one as its most prolific scorer walked off.It is perhaps no coincidence that was the precise moment when the wicket decided to change character as the lights took hold. Shan Masood was given out in the first over, and though he had it overturned, the breakthrough was never far away. Imam-ul Haq nicked off to Warner – who else? – in the slips in the fifth over, and it wasn’t long before Cummins found Azhar Ali’s outside edge after the dinner break, allowing Smith to take a sharp catch diving forward at second slip.It was, more or less, the way every Pakistan batsman was dismissed. Each one of the six that fell would have their outside edge tickled, with Starc doing much of the damage in the final half an hour. Asad Shafiq fell to one he could do little about, while poor shot selection from Iftikhar and Mohammad Rizwan meant Pakistan were making Australia’s task much easier than it needed to be. Sunday might be affected by rain, but it appears little can impact the outcome of this match.

Nottingham Forest must regret selling a star who’s worth more than Murillo

Nottingham Forest endured a horrible few years under the ownership of Fawaz Al-Hasawi, with the club narrowly avoiding relegation to League One during the 2016/17 season.

Mark Warburton's side beat Ipswich Town 3-0 on the final day of the campaign, securing their safety by the barest of margins – with the club taken over by Evangelos Marinakis over the summer.

He would invest in the playing squad, with the club developing rapidly under Frenchman Sabri Lamouchi before an infamous collapse on the final day of the 2019/20 season that saw the Reds miss out on the playoffs despite an eight-goal swing.

The failure to gain promotion to the Premier League saw multiple departures from the City Ground that summer, with one player in particular moving to play in England's top flight.

He's since excelled, with the former Forest player now a full international and excelling more than any Reds fan could have anticipated.

Matty Cash's stats at Nottingham Forest

After coming through the Nigel Doughty Academy at Forest, winger Matty Cash made his first-team debut in the 4-3 opening-day victory against Burton Albion during the 2016/17 campaign, with the youngster going on to make 28 appearances throughout the season.

He would spend two more seasons as a right-sided midfielder, before dropping back to right-back under Lamouchi during the 2019/20 season.

It was a decision that would shock Forest fans, with the then-Reds boss claiming that Cash had "all the qualities" to play as a right-back in his 4-2-3-1 system.

Despite it being his first full campaign in his new role, Cash excelled in his 42 appearances, scoring three times and being named Nottingham Forest Player of the Season.

His sensational form at the City Ground, coupled with the club's failure to win promotion to England's top flight saw the defender complete a move to Aston Villa for £14m in the summer of 2020.

Matty Cash's market value in 2024

Nearly four years on from his move to Villa Park, the defender has gone on to achieve remarkable things with Cash now a prevalent figure for the Poland national team and for the West Midlands side under boss Unai Emery.

The now 26-year-old has since made 136 appearances for Villa, with the right-back also winning the Player of the Season award in his second full term with the club.

matty-cash-aston-villa-injury-poland

He's since been the subject of interest from Spanish side Atlético Madrid, with the defender's market value taking a sharp upturn since his move from Forest.

The Polish full-back is now worth £24m as per Transfermarkt, a figure that is £2.5m more than Forest's current young talent, Murillo, who is currently valued at £21.5m according to the same source.

Matty Cash.

Given his rapid rise, the Reds must regret selling him for as little as £14m – with Cash now an established full-back in the Premier League.

The club undoubtedly had to sell him to comply with FFP rules, but the club must hold some regret with Cash being the perfect fit in Nuno Espírito Santo's current system.

His energetic playstyle and ability to create chances down the Reds' right-hand side would be perfect under Nuno, with the 26-year-old an upgrade on current full-back Neco Williams.

  • City demand £77m for the striker
  • Atletico Madrid unwilling to match the valuation
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to the forward remains keen to get more playing time and relocate to a warmer climate. However, he might find himself hindered by City's valuation which is reportedly around £60m ($77m), with an additional £17 million ($22m) in potential add-ons. Atletico Madrid, who have shown considerable interest in the player, disagree with City's demands and might pull out of any potential deal if further negotiations fail to convince the Premier League champions to lower their asking price.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alvarez has flown to Paris to participate in the Summer Olympics with Argentina after plying his trade in the Copa America, which will further deter Pep Guardiola from handing him a starting role, at least in the initial phase of the 2024-25 campaign. He hasn't had a substantial break in three years owing to club and international commitments, making his situation even more complex.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In recent years, City have demonstrated a willingness to allow players to leave if they desire, a policy highlighted by the transfers of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal. However, they have also shown resistance when it comes to key players, whom they will struggle to replace at short notice, creating challenges for potential suitors. Last summer, they blocked the sales of Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva, demonstrating their selective approach to player transfers.

    WHAT NEXT?

City's financial prudence while dealing with key assets has come to the forefront once again. They are likely to be rigid with their valuation of Alvarez, who has already reportedly rejected a four-year extension offer, which could force the player to continue at Etihad as a backup to goal-machine Erling Haaland, at least for another year.

Man Utd have “discussed” move for £34m "young Pogba" to replace Casemiro

Thursday's infuriating 4-3 defeat to Chelsea underlined the fact that incomings and outgoings must occur at Manchester United.

Over previous seasons, the Red Devils haven’t recruited brilliantly, with multiple high-profile signings, such as Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho, failing to impress.

That said, last summer was rather successful, with Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana already improving the team, despite results stating otherwise – the former having netted a respectable 13 goals in all competitions.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will look to repeat that again at the end of the season, with one target surely being viewed as a replacement for Casemiro.

Man Utd’s midfield search

According to a report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Man United will attempt to complete a midfield overhaul in the summer.

With the new ownership, the Red Devils may raid French side Nice – who are also owned by Ratcliffe and Ineos – with Khephren Thuram the main target to replace the likes of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, having been “discussed” internally.

Nice midfielderKhephren Thuram.

The midfielder's exit from the Ligue 1 side seems inevitable, as this summer may prove to be the final opportunity for Nice to receive a large fee for him, with his contract expiring in 2025.

This means that a move to United at the end of the season is a possibility, but according to news from Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, via Football Italia, he could cost around the £34m mark.

Man Utd ace who was worse than Dalot vs Chelsea must immediately be binned

ByTom Lever Apr 5, 2024 How Thuram compares to Casemiro

Unfortunately, the £70m that Man Utd spent on the Brazilian at the start of Ten Hag’s reign seems to be looking like a waste of money, with the club already reportedly looking to get rid of the defensive midfielder.

At 32 years of age, the former Real Madrid player has been largely ineffective this season over his 16 Premier League games, with his performance against Chelsea highlighting that.

Unfortunately, this decrease in form and performance is only set to continue in one direction, and Thuram could just be the key to United’s progress over the Ineos era.

The 23-year-old has featured in 20 French top-flight matches this campaign, where he has proven to be a very well-rounded midfielder who impacts the game at both ends of the field.

As you can see by the table above showcasing both Casemiro’s and Thuram’s stats from their most recent outing, the differences are clear.

The statistics that stand out instantly are Thuram’s superior defensive ability, with his six tackles blowing Casemiro’s zero out the park, while he’s also much stronger during his individual battles.

Furthermore, although statistics don’t always paint the real picture, Thuram is extremely athletic and physical, with football analyst Ben Mattinson referring to him as a “young Paul Pogba” with more defensive capabilities – an intriguing prospect indeed.

On the ball, Thuram is relatively composed, and his technical ability means he’s best-suited to a role as a box-to-box midfielder rather than a defensive one, as he can also carry the ball with ease, as shown by the clip above – thus illustrating that likeness to his World Cup-winning compatriot, Pogba.

Overall, the French midfielder still has plenty of room for development despite already being a star, which means United won’t just be buying a midfielder for the present but also one for the future.

ICC should not mandate four-day Tests 'for the sake of it', warns Andrew Strauss

Length of Test matches only part of the discussion says former England captain who sits on ICC cricket committee

Andrew Strauss, the former England opener and ECB director of cricket who now sits on the ICC’s cricket committee, has warned that any move towards making four-day Tests mandatory “should be an easy sell or we shouldn’t be doing it”.As revealed by ESPNcricinfo, cricket’s governing body is mulling the possibility of stipulating that World Test Championship matches be played over four days – with a minimum of 98 overs per day – from 2023 onwards. However, while conceding that efforts had to be made to improve the health of Test cricket globally, Strauss suggested game length was “only one part” of the discussion.”If you asked how many people want to reduce Test matches down from five days to four, the answer is probably not that many,” Strauss told the . “My gut feeling is that we should be looking at the whole picture, how Test cricket can be looking as healthy as possible in future, then work back from that.”We shouldn’t assume Test cricket is healthy just because it is popular in England. In lots of parts of the world, boards are struggling financially and Test cricket is not paying the bills. So we have to look at ways to improve the product for all. That’s the spectacle, the cricket itself, the costs, the schedules, the pitches, the balls, the experience. We need a World Test Championship that is meaningful and compelling. The length of the game is only one part of that bigger discussion.”This isn’t something that is being proposed with an agenda behind it. No one wants to change for the sake of it. It should be an easy sell or we shouldn’t be doing it.”Strauss, under whose captaincy England held the No. 1 Test ranking between 2011 and 2012, also highlighted the concern that pitches in Asia may not deteriorate enough over four days in order to produce results. The ICC’s cricket committee, currently chaired by Anil Kumble, is set to meet in March to discuss the proposals – which could free up considerable room in cricket’s crowded international schedule – before putting their recommendations to the executive body. Two other members of the cricket committee, former Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene and Mickey Arthur, Sri Lanka’s coach, both expressed their preference for five-day Tests earlier this week. There have been plenty of dissenting voices among current players, too, with the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations demanding clarity about how the change would positively affect the calendar, amid fears any space made could be filled by “additional or meaningless cricket”.

This "very special" Celtic star out on loan is already a Kuhn upgrade

Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers dipped into the market during the January transfer window to make two new additions to his first-team squad.

The Northern Irish boss brought in German winger Nicolas Kuhn on a permanent deal from Austrian side Rapid Wien and Republic of Ireland international Adam Idah on loan from English outfit Norwich City until the end of the season, with no option to buy.

However, the Hoops also reportedly wanted a goalkeeper and a left-back to bolster their options before they then targeted a central midfielder on deadline day after David Turnbull's permanent move to Cardiff City.

Unfortunately, they could not land any of their targets in those three positions and have had to make do with Kuhn and Idah as their only signings of the window.

Adam Idah

The Irish centre-forward has already hit the ground running with five goals and one assist in six Scottish Premiership outings for the Hoops but the former Rapid Wien star has not been as impressive.

Kuhn's slow start to life in Scotland has not been helped by Mikey Johnston – who was sent out on loan to West Bromwich Albion in January – being on fire in England, as the Irish forward currently looks like an upgrade on the recent signing.

Nicolas Kuhn's Celtic stats so far

The 24-year-old whiz was brought in on a five-and-a-half-year deal earlier this year for a reported fee of £3m after a strong first half of the season with his former club.

He had produced two goals and five assists, along with having created 11 'big chances' for his teammates, in 16 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga before his move to Parkhead.

Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn.

Kuhn has not hit the ground running in Scotland, however, as he has only managed one goal and zero assists in five Premiership matches so far.

The left-footed dynamo did, however, score on his second appearance for the club. He came off the bench against Aberdeen to rifle in a deflected effort, assisted by Idah, to secure a 1-1 draw for the Bhoys.

However, as you can see in the table above, the forward has not kicked on since that goal at Pittodrie, with zero goals, zero assists, and zero 'big chances' created in the subsequent three matches.

The German attacker was then an unused substitute against both Dundee and Hearts, which speaks to how unimpressed Rodgers was with his performances on the pitch, before he registered an assist against Livingston in the SFA Cup last weekend.

This means that Kuhn has contributed with one goal and one assist in seven appearances in all competitions since his move to Scotland in January, which is one direct goal contribution every 3.5 outings on average.

He was brought in to bolster the club's wide options after Johnston, and others, did not earn regular game time during the first half of the season.

Mikey Johnston's Celtic stats this season

The Ireland international was not offered many opportunities to showcase his quality for Celtic before Rodgers allowed him to join West Brom on loan during the last transfer window.

Johnston started three times and featured in nine games in the Premiership during the first half of the campaign, as he was stuck behind the likes of Daizen Maeda, Hyun-jun Yang, and Luis Palma in the pecking order.

The academy graduate did, however, show glimpses of his quality in those limited minutes on the pitch. He chipped in with two goals and two 'big chances' created in three starts, to go along with an 85% pass accuracy.

Celtic winger Michael Johnston.

Both of those goals came in a stunning 11-minute cameo against Dundee in the Premiership in December as he scored two goals, registered three shots on target, and completed 95% of his passes to earn a 9.5 Sofascore rating in the 3-0 win.

The 24-year-old whiz's impressive displays were not, however, enough to convince Rodgers that he deserved more – or regular – minutes on the pitch moving forward, which is why a loan move to the Baggies was then sanctioned after Kuhn was brought in from Rapid Wien.

Why Mikey Johnston is an upgrade on Nicolas Kuhn

Johnston has been in fantastic form in the English Championship since his move to the Hawthorns earlier this year, and his statistics for Carlos Corberan's side suggest that Celtic already have an upgrade on Kuhn ahead of the summer.

The right-footed gem has been on fire for West Brom as they compete to secure promotion to the Premier League, with a return of six goals and one assist in nine league appearances.

Corberan hailed the 5 foot 9 wizard as "very special" and it is not hard to see why when you look at his recent form, as the talented star has scored four goals and provided one assist in his last three Championship games.

As you can see in the table above, Johnston has significantly outperformed Kuhn in the final third throughout 2024 so far, with six more goals and 'big chances' created combined.

In total, the Irish dynamo has scored eight goals and created three 'big chances' in nine starts and 18 league appearances for Celtic and West Brom combined this season.

That is a return of a goal or 'big chance' created every 1.64 matches on average. Whereas, Kuhn has managed one in seven outings for the Hoops, and a goal or an assist every 3.5 clashes on average, which illustrates the gulf in class between the two at the top end of the pitch.

The Glasgow-born magician currently ranks within the top 1% of Championship attacking midfielders and wingers for non-penalty goals (1.05) per 90, and the top 6% for progressive carries (5.27) per 90, which shows that he also looks to bring the ball forward for his team with driving runs.

Mikey Johnston

Overall, Rodgers appears to already have an upgrade on Kuhn to bring back into the first-team squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign as Johnston's loan spell in England has been a roaring success so far.

Celtic played a blinder by selling a star who's now worse than Johnston

Hopefully, the academy graduate will return to Parkhead an improved player and prove himself to offer more than the German winger with his superior ability to score and create goals on a regular basis, as evidenced by their respective form this year, to bolster Celtic's side next term.

Sam Curran provides tonic on England's off-colour day

Not so long ago, had an England team produced a performance like this at a moment like this, it might well have been blamed on the over-indulgences of Christmas. Indeed, a couple of decades ago, some members of an England team credited a memorable victory in Sydney, in January 2003, precisely to the manner in which they had celebrated over the previous days. There’s no question of that here. Yes, England’s bowlers struggled with their lines and lengths. And yes, they struggled to generate the pace we might have expected on the Highveld. Having won the toss and inserted, a total approaching 280 is probably a fair few more than they anticipated. The simple truth is that, through little fault of their own, England have gone into this game underprepared. Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad, who actually bowled quite nicely after his first spell, have not been able to bowl a competitive delivery on tour ahead of this match due to illness while James Anderson is, for all his class and experience, playing his first first-class game since August. There were times here when it showed. To make matters worse, in the afternoon session Ben Stokes reported symptoms of the illness that has ravaged this squad in the early stages of this tour. As a result, he spent a considerable part of the day in the dressing room with the medical team trying to rehydrate him. It’s not just that they hadn’t enjoyed much match practice, either. It’s that they looked, unusually among modern England sides, a little short of the peak levels of fitness to which we have become accustomed. And that, again, is not a criticism. The fact is, three of the five-man seam attack have been ill in recent days and have, as a consequence, struggled to put in either the training sessions they might have liked or take on the fluids and food required. In this heat, at this altitude, such issues are mercilessly exploited. So while there is no way we can class this as a good bowling performance, we do have to be mindful of the mitigating factors. Perhaps, in retrospect, the long training session England were put through on Christmas Eve was self-defeating, but it was an understandable attempt to make up for lost time. Really, England have been quite unlucky on this tour to date and it would be churlish not to acknowledge it.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

They also took a couple of questionable gambles, though. The first was inserting South Africa on a surface which is famous for its deterioration; the second in opting for that all-seam attack. There was some logic in both decisions. There was, as Joe Root pointed out at the toss, a little live grass on the surface he hoped his bowlers “could exploit” in the opening session. And while the surface was likely to ease after the first couple of hours, England could be forgiven for concluding they might have the opportunity to bat on the pitch at its best on day two. There was certainly assistance available for the bowlers in that first session; they simply didn’t put the ball in the right areas often enough to take advantage of it.It was a risk, though. Not only did it expose England’s under-the-weather bowlers to an early outing – might they have recovered further given another 24 hours? – but it also sentenced England to the likelihood of batting last on a pitch which tends to offer an increasing amount of variable bounce. Some knowledgeable locals feel that, in this heat – mid-30s – the cracks will open as early as the second afternoon. The absence of a spinner was perhaps more understandable. Jack Leach is unavailable through illness and Matt Parkinson, for all his white-ball promise, has not been bowling especially well in training. Indeed, suggestions are that Dom Bess, who hasn’t played a match since been added to the squad, has risen above him in the pecking order. Root looked the best of the spinners in the warm-up matches here. But the absence of that spinner was shown up most of all in the period ahead of the second new ball. With the ball softer and the swing having all but vanished, England were left – not for the first time – to tread water in the period when a good spinner might have proved invaluable. Not for the first time it occurred that, had Moeen Ali been managed a little more sensitively, he might be here and playing his part: he averages 21.14 with the ball in overs 61-80 over the last couple of years. Anderson, by comparison, averages 101 and Broad 47.50.ALSO READ: Curran takes four, de Kock 95, on see-saw dayEqually, England’s slow over-rate – there were 15 overs still to be bowled at the scheduled close at 5pm and, in the end, seven overs were lost from the day – may come back to haunt England. In this day and age, they can be penalised World Test Championship points for such tardiness. A spinner would have helped. We probably shouldn’t be surprised that Sam Curran was the pick of the bowlers. Unlike Archer and Broad, he has not spent much of the last week curled up on his bathroom floor and unlike Anderson, he enjoyed some competitive cricket in the last few months. By getting through 19 overs on the first day – he has only bowled more overs once in a Test innings – despite suffering from cramp, he at least helped mask the holes elsewhere in the attack. There was more than that, though. In these circumstances, with the ball offering just a little lateral movement, his skills and his left-arm angle offer England a valuable point of difference. If the delivery to dismiss Quinton de Kock, a peach of an outswinger that came at a time when the other bowlers were struggling to find any movement, was the highlight, the dismissals of Rassie van der Dussen and Dwaine Pretorius – both anxiously playing for inswing that never came – were also testament to his skills. There were still moments, such as when his short ball sat up a little too invitingly, when you wondered how Curran would fare in less helpful conditions. But the encouraging thing is that, at 21, he is improving all the time with plenty of scope for further progress. These were not only his best Test figures but by far his best with the Kookaburra ball. This was a desperately tough day for a sickly England side but Curran, at least, offered hope for the future – both immediate and long-term.

One club's £86 million star has now decided he wants to join Mikel Arteta at Arsenal this summer, as he deems north London his "first choice".

Arsenal's steady growth under Arteta has been nothing short of exceptional, with the Gunners spending years outside of England's elite circle but now find themselves consistently contending at the top end of the table.

This is largely down to the players brought in, as both Arteta and Edu work in tandem to continue investing into the club's long-term project. Attention soon turns towards the summer transfer window and how best to keep building upon Arsenal's recent success, with their transfer chief explaining that they're after young, hungry and passionate new recruits.

"We already have our targets,” said Edu on Arsenal's summer transfer policy.

“We have planned a lot ahead and I will be worried if we don’t score a lot of goals and if we’re not creating chances, which is the opposite because we create a lot and score a lot of goals. The plan is to try to get better every year and I think we are in a good moment. Let's see if we can keep improving.

“Many times in certain conversations to recruit the players you don't see the character of the player or the character of the player does not fit well with what we are trying to do and then you have to move on and try to find what we’re really looking for. If you see all the signings we’ve made since we started together, everyone is almost the same, young, energetic and passionate, and good talents with big, beautiful futures ahead of them.”

One position Arsenal are certain to strengthen this summer is up front. Fabrizio Romano says Edu will sign an "important" striker this summer, and the reliable journalist has backed interest in Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres.

The "unplayable" Swede's phenomenal haul of 36 goals in all competitions is a real attraction for Arsenal, but many other elite sides will also be keeping tabs.

Gyokeres decides he wants to join Arsenal this summer

Now, according to Football Transfers, Edu and Arteta have may received a timely boost in their pursuit.

Viktor Gyokeres in action for Sporting

Indeed, it is now claimed that Gyokeres has made Arsenal his "first choice" club if he is to leave Sporting this summer. The former Coventry City star's contract includes an £86 million release clause, but Sporting are willing for sides to pay £68m up front and the rest further down the line.
