Newcastle United have been linked with a move for an "outstanding" player this summer and Eddie Howe thinks he can be a regular starter for many years to come if they get a deal done.
Newcastle transfer news
The Magpies continue to be linked with new signings after a relatively disappointing season, in what has hopefully just been one year out of the Champions League, hampered largely by long-term injuries throughout the squad.
It looks as though Newcastle are targeting a new goalkeeper before the start of next season, with Arsenal stopper Aaron Ramsale emerging as a strong target. Not only is the England international likely to be desperate for regular football after losing his place to David Raya, but he and Howe also know each other well from their time together at Bournemouth.
Ramsdale isn't the only 'keeper seemingly being looked at, however, with Valencia ace Giorgi Mamardashvili seen as an alternative option to come in and provide competition for Nick Pope, if not usurp him between the sticks.
Attacking reinforcements are also important for Newcastle, though, especially if Callum Wilson moves on this summer, and Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri is considered a contender to come in and provide additional firepower. Fifteen goals have come his way in La Liga this season, and he could be primed to make an impact in the Premier League.
Newcastle want to sign "outstanding" ace
Another transfer rumour has now droped, with journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon [via The Boot Room] claiming that Newcastle are interested in signing Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford ahead of next season.
The young Englishman is another option alongside Ramsdale and Mamardashvili, with Howe reportedly seeing him as a quality long-term addition who could be a starter for many years to come, eventually maturing to the point where he is the Magpies' undisputed No.1.
Trafford may have had a tough first season at Burnley, suffering relegation from the Premier League and losing his spot in the team, but he is still a young player with so much potential. The 21-year-old has already won 17 caps for England's Under-21s, with his manager at international level, Lee Carsley, heaping praise on him last summer for his performances at the triumphant European Championships:
"Wherever he goes and wherever he plays, he's got a really top mentality. He's been outstanding through the tournament. Not conceding a goal is a great achievement. He's been a really important part of us playing out from the back and playing through."
Granted, it would be a surprise if Burnley were willing to sell Trafford so soon after arriving on a permanent basis from Manchester City last year, but his head could be turned by staying in the Premier League instead of heading to the Championship.
Newcastle pushing to sign “exceptional” £120k-a-week ace this summer
The update comes from a reliable journalist.
ByHenry Jackson May 18, 2024
The £25,000-a-week Trafford would have to accept that he likely wouldn't be a regular at Newcastle from the off, though, given his lack of experience, but Howe clearly values him greatly and views him as a part of his plans for a long time to come.
Newcastle United have been hampered by inconsistency and a number of injuries over the past months, with a top-four spot now firmly out of reach.
However, a European berth is still firmly within their grasp, with the Magpies sitting in seventh place ahead of their home game against rock-bottom Sheffield United this weekend.
As we get closer towards the business end of the season, Eddie Howe will be eager to avoid any further blows to his squad, so with that in mind, Football FanCast is here to keep you updated with the latest injury and suspension news coming out of St James' Park.
Latest Newcastle United injury news
Eddie Howe gave his latest update ahead of the Blades' visit on Saturday. Tino Livramento appears set to feature at St James' Park after being left on the bench against Crystal Palace. Elsewhere, Miguel Almiron looks to be the closest to a first-team comeback, though he has been ruled out for this weekend, with the trip to Burnley a more likely return date.
The manager also hinted that the likes of Kieran Trippier, Joelinton and Nick Pope were all potentially able to return before the end of the campaign.
However, Howe was less positive about Matt Targett, who he expects to miss the remainder of the season, as he joins the likes of Lewis Miley and Joe Willock on the treatment table.
Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and the suspended Sandro Tonali remain long-term absentees for the Toon.

Miguel Almiron – knee
Based on Eddie Howe's latest press conference, Miguel Almiron is the closest to returning to the first-team fold after tweaking his knee earlier this month.
According to The Chronicle, Howe indicated that although Almiron is out of the clash with Sheffield United, the Paraguayan will be "there or there about" ahead of Newcastle's trip to Turf Moor next weekend.
Kieran Trippier – calf
Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier.
Kieran Trippier has been out for a while now, but Howe indicated that a return is not too far away for the defender. He could even be in contention for the squad against former club Burnley, but faces a race against time.
Ahead of this weekend, Howe said: "We hope he’ll be back soon, but not for this game."
Joelinton – thigh
Joelinton could miss the remainder of the current campaign due to a thigh injury, which was picked up during the 3-0 win over bitter rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup. It was confirmed by the club after the midfielder underwent thigh surgery.
Howe was understandably despondent when commenting on it back in January, saying (via The Chronicle): "Massive blow for us. We knew when he did the injury it immediately didn't look good. We didn't know he'd be out as long. He's had a stop-start season. When he is fit and firing, there's no one like him and he brings a different dynamic to our midfield. He's a leader as well. He'll be a big miss."
More recently, he has hinted that a return before the end of the season is possible, with The Chronicle stating that he could return alongside Kieran Trippier in the coming weeks.
Nick Pope – dislocated shoulder
Nick Pope dislocated his shoulder during his side's 1-0 victory against Manchester United in early December, and it was stated that he could miss up to four months, keeping him sidelined until April.
Howe provided an update on Pope's conditionsoon after whenspeaking to BBC Radio Newcastle: "He's had a couple of appointments, visited specialists. I am sort of awaiting final news on what is going to happen.
"The operation hasn't happened yet but we are thinking roughly around four months. So it is a big blow to us, but one that we expected after the game. As soon as you see the dislocation, we were fearing the worst."
Pope is not expected to face ex-employers Burnley next week, but he could be between the sticks again before the end of the campaign, having returned to training.
Lewis Miley – back
Lewis Miley picked up a back problem while away with the England Development Squad.
And, it doesn't look like he'll be back before the end of the season, as Eddie Howe said this:
"The decision was made on Lewis to protect him long-term. We won’t see Lewis again this season. Even if there was a chance, we took that away quite early on with his age, we are just thinking about his long-term prospect."
Matt Targett – Achilles
Eddie Howe also revealed recently that Matt Targett's Achilles injury will likely see him sit out the rest of the season.
He told reporters before Newcastle's clash against Sheffield United (via The Chronicle): "We'll not [see him again], I'll say. If we rushed him back and hit the accelerator, he might be back for the last game. But with that in mind, we'd be better off waiting for next summer."
Joe Willock – Achilles
Joe Willock
Joe Willock was added to the injury list at Newcastle after lasting only 40 minutes against Fulham in early April.
He's now set to miss the remainder of the current campaign. Here's what Howe had to say:
"We have decided that a period where he strengthens the area around his Achilles will benefit him more. The long-term view was taken, we will get him right for next season. Surgery wouldn’t be beneficial for him in this situation. It is frustrating for Joe, but hopefully we can get to the situation where he is playing freely next season.”
Sven Botman – ACL
Newcastle defender Sven Botman.
Sven Botman picked up an ACL injury while playing against Manchester City in the FA Cup prior to the March international break, and is now set to be out for an extended period of time.
Howe had this to say on his situation:
“A big blow. It’s a complex story around Sven this season since he got his knee injury. Initially, he had a partial tear of his ACL, we saw [the] specialist opinion on that injury and there were conflicting reports on what he should do next.
"Ultimately, our medical team advised him to get surgery. He wanted to carry on playing and we'll always try to guide and help the players but it's their bodies and they have to make the final decision.
"I've seen several players from that injury come back and carry on playing and stay fit. It's a delicate issue for him. He now has a long period of rehab ahead of him and we wish him well and hope he comes back in a really good place."
Jamaal Lascelles – ACL
Jamaal Lascelles for Newcastle.
Eddie Howe also has to contend with Jamaal Lascelles's own ACL injury. This is set to see him miss around 6-9 months of action.
Latest Newcastle United suspension news
Sandro Tonali is the only Magpies player currently serving a long-term suspension.
Sandro Tonali – suspended (illegal betting)
The Italy international will be sidelined from competitive action until next August after breaching betting rules.
A Newcastle statement read: "Sandro Tonali has been banned from competitive football for ten months, as effective from Friday, 27th October 2023, following illegal betting charges by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
"FIGC's sanction includes an overall 18-month ban, with eight months commuted as the player participates in a therapeutic plan and educational programme in Italy consisting of 16 commitments.
"On the evening of Friday, 27th October, Newcastle United received confirmation that FIFA has endorsed FIGC's sanction to be applied worldwide, meaning Sandro will be eligible to return to competitive football from Tuesday, 27th August 2024."
‘The way he’s been bowling the last 18 months has been outstanding’
Daniel Brettig28-Jul-2020Stuart Broad’s Ashes batting bunny David Warner is still trying to figure out how it was even possible that the paceman was dropped from England’s first Test match of the northern summer, and paid tribute to the 34-year-old as he stood on the brink of 500 wickets. In getting out seven times in 10 innings to Broad in England last year, Warner had a previously respectable record in England scythed down to an embarrassing size. The Australian was left questioning plenty about himself and his game in foreign conditions before he returned home to a typically bountiful home season against Pakistan and New Zealand.Warner admitted to some shock when he saw that Broad was left out for Mark Wood when England played the first Test match since cricket’s return amid the coronavirus pandemic, before the Nottinghamshire seamer was recalled and proved instrumental in securing the hosts victory in the second match of the series and then taking the hosts to the outskirts of another in the decider.”I think they should drop him again, I don’t know why they dropped him for that first game,” Warner laughed. “It’d be nice if I was to play over there again and he wasn’t playing. I saw he got a 50 and he’s taking some batting tips off Shane Warne, which is weird, but the way he bowls, the way he’s been bowling the last 18 months has been outstanding. I don’t know what was the reasoning behind leaving him out of that first Test, but obviously he’s come back and taken a few wickets.”Personally, I think he’s a world-class bowler and the last 18 months he’s really worked hard on pitching the ball up. When I look back on the stats it is probably the first time in his career, he’s actually pitched the ball up in that sort of five to six metres area the bowlers talk about quite a lot. He’s got a hell of a record against left handers as well, and I think the capability of him bringing the ball back off the wicket into the left handers has been another string to his bow.”Bowlers do tend to talk about not meaning to do that off the seam, but if you keep producing the right seam consistently enough, you’re going to get that sideways movement both ways and he’s been able to get that, and it’s not by fluke that he’s had success the past 18 months, he’s worked really hard to get to where he is and credit to him. Hopefully, yeah, I do get another crack against him.”
They’re both not express pace, and to take [nearly 1100] wickets between them as a pair when playing together is exceptional. You just can’t go after them, they don’t take their foot off the pedal and when you’re up against them, you’ve got to think of ways to rotate strike.Warner on the enduring Broad-Anderson partnership
The sequence of dismissals endured by Warner last year was testament to Broad’s ability to improve himself, having previously struggled to find the right lines and lengths with which to challenge the Australian left-hander, either in challenging Australian conditions or even friendlier home environs during the 2013 and 2015 series. Broad made his own disappointment plain during the first Test against the West Indies in Hampshire, but in the final match of the series at Old Trafford, he has returned to a familiar and prolific partnership with James Anderson.”I think when you’ve got two quality bowlers who’ve bowled in partnerships for a long, long time, in the partnership they bowl they don’t leak runs, and that’s the most important thing when we bat in partnerships, we try to get off strike, rotate strike, get bowlers off their lines and lengths,” Warner said. “These guys have the ability to keep those runs restricted, and they bowl a length where in England if you go to drive that length, you’re probably going to nick, but also the length means they’re still hitting the stumps, so you can’t really leave it.”In English conditions they just know how to get wickets and how to not leak runs. I know as well, James Anderson can not take a wicket, but still go for less than two an over. That just shows his experience as well. They’re both not express pace, and to take [nearly 1100] wickets between them as a pair when playing together is exceptional. You just can’t go after them, they don’t take their foot off the pedal and when you’re up against them, you’ve got to think of ways to rotate strike. Otherwise if you give them too many overs at you, they’re going to get you out.”
The teenage wonderkid was simply too good for Girona, as he scored a brilliant brace in a 4-1 thumping of last season's third-placed finishers.
Barcelona may well have expected a tricky trip to Girona, given that they upset the applecart by qualifying for the Champions League last season, but inspired by Lamine Yamal, they ran riot.
On the half-hour mark, Barcelona found a way through thanks to wonderkid Yamal, who robbed defender David Lopez on the edge of his own box, turned, and finished coolly.
And he had a second just six minutes later, curling an effort into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, through a clutch of Girona bodies.
Girona thought they had a penalty before half-time, as the ball struck Inigo Martinez's hand, but the referee was overruled by VAR and the decision was amended.
Within two minutes of the second half, Barca were 3-0 up, as Dani Olmo finished viciously from an acute angle.
Just after the hour, Pedri added a fourth, sprinting onto a brilliant through ball from Marc Casado and lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.
Girona pulled a goal back in the final 10 minutes through Christhian Stuani, while Ferran Torres was sent off before full-time after a nasty lunge in midfield.

Goalkeeper & Defence
Marc-Andre ter Stegen (6/10):
Made an excellent first-half save to deny Bryan Gil. Rarely tested thereafter but went walkabout when Christian Stuani scored.
Jules Kounde (7/10):
Set up shop in Girona's half and provided an assist for Olmo's strike. Very effective in both halves.
Pau Cubarsi (7/10):
Stood up well to Girona's attack. Passed the ball well too; a defender beyond his years.
Inigo Martinez (5/10):
Fortunate not to give away a penalty as he handled the ball in the box. Solid otherwise.
Alejandro Balde (6/10):
Smashed an early effort just over. Got forward whenever he could, and had Girona's defence running scared but the goal came down his side as he was not able to cover.

Midfield
Pedri (7/10):
So rarely loses the ball. Scored a fabulous goal as he sprinted onto a glorious through ball and finished. Subbed.
Marc Casado (7/10):
Heavily involved in build-up and put his body on the line defensively too, with more than one successful tackle. A glorious assist for Pedri, as he split the defence with one pass.
Dani Olmo (7/10):
Scored Barca's third, as he fired a rasping effort into the roof of the net from an acute angle. Subbed on the hour in a clearly pre-planned change. Replaced by Eric after a lively display.

Attack
Lamine Yamal (9/10):
Opened the scoring in emphatic fashion, pressing high and finishing calmly. Scored again soon after as his effort from the edge of the box found the bottom corner. Amazingly, one of the players to make the most tackles in the game. He's unbelievable, and at this rate, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he could go on and become Barcelona's next Lionel Messi.
Robert Lewandowski (5/10):
Assisted Yamal's second goal. Missed a superb opportunity when sent through one-on-one. Replaced by Ferran Torres. Some excellent hold-up but will be disappointed not to have scored.
Raphinha (6/10):
Tracked back well. Some excellent dribbles but was not able to turn his excellent positioning into a clear-cut chance.

Subs & Manager
Eric Garcia (6/10):
On for Olmo. Kept the midfield ticking.
Hector Fort (5/10):
On for Cubarsi. Was nowhere when Girona got in behind to score their consolation.
Ferran Torres (4/10):
Replaced Lewandowski. Sent off with five minutes to go after a nasty lunge in midfield. At 4-1, it was a completely unnecessary challenge, and he is now suspended.
Pau Victor (6/10):
On for Pedri. Did not have quite the same impact in midfield, but that was a mighty task.
Gerard Martin (N/A)
On in injury time.
Hansi Flick (7/10):
Managed to rotate heavily within the game and got his lineup and tactics spot on. Barcelona's high press yielded a goal, and more than one high quality chance. They're starting to purr.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta could have a real say in the club's potential pursuit of a £205,000-per-week forward, as the Gunners' transfer plans begin to take effect.
Edu looking to make new attacking signings for Arsenal
As reported by reliable journalist Charles Watts recently, Arsenal could look to bring in both a striker and winger this summer, despite their excellent attacking form this season.
Arsenal table formal bid to sign £52 million man who's "perfect" for Arteta
The Gunners are moving quickly pre-summer.
ByEmilio Galantini May 15, 2024
A final day win over Everton would take Mikel Arteta's side beyond 90 goals for the Premier League campaign alone, with Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz scoring 50 top flight goals between them over 2023/2024.
These numbers are impressive, but the trio can feel hard done by as sporting director Edu is still very much planning to bolster Arteta's front line for next term. Arsenal are expected to sign an "important" out-and-out striker, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, while a new winger is indeed on the cards according to Watts.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise is reportedly on Edu's transfer shortlist heading into the summer window, which officially opens on June 14, while Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams and his reps have apparently held talks with Arsenal.
Another wide man who's been sporadically linked, and who possesses real Premier League pedigree, is Barcelona winger Raphinha. The £205,000-per-week Brazilian, who starred for Leeds in the top flight before his move to the Camp Nou, could make a return to England this summer.
Arteta could spearhead Arsenal move for Raphinha
According to GiveMeSport this week, Arteta could personally "up the ante" in a potential Arsenal pursuit for Raphinha, if moves for their other attacking targets appear like a lost cause.
There is the possibility of a "tug-of-war" between Arsenal and Newcastle United over the South American ace, who's bagged six goals and nine assists over 16 La Liga starts under Xavi this season.
Barcelona star Raphinha.
Raphinha isn't exactly a key player at Barcelona like he was in Yorkshire, but if he can replicate his Whites form in an Arsenal jersey, then we believe the 27-year-old could be worth looking at.
“Each week we are seeing more and more of his repertoire. He has so much to offer Leeds United," said former Leeds striker Noel Whelan on Raphinha during his time at Elland Road (Football Insider). “That skill in the corner against Gary Cahill was a typical bit of Brazilian magic. He really embarrassed Cahill with a clever megs.
“He is a player now who continuously has an effect on a game, in a positive way. Even if he is not on the scoresheet, he will have played a hand in the goal. He is relentless.
“He gets on the ball, has great balance, is very dynamic and he takes the game to the opposition. What impresses me is that he is not afraid to do the horrible side. I get more and more impressed by his worth ethic.”

Barcelona wanted to keep GuiuStriker joined Chelsea this summerSpanish side offered 'important deal'WHAT HAPPENED?
Guiu joined Chelsea from Barcelona earlier this summer after the Premier League side triggered the 18-year-old's release clause €6 million (£5m/$6.6m). Barcelona sporting director Deco has now revealed that the Catalan side wanted to keep the striker at the club, but they failed to do so despite offering Guiu a massive contract upgrade.

Speaking to the media, Deco said: "Chelsea paid the release clause and he left. He had an old contract, with a €6 million release clause. He was offered an important contract and an important project, but he made the decision to go another way."
He added: "The player opted for an offer from Chelsea. We offered him a project to be a forward for Barca, but he did not want to."

Guiu has now been at Chelsea for just over a month, but has featured just once in the Premier League for Enzo Maresca's side having played in their league opener against Manchester City. He did play in both of Chelsea's Europa Conference League play-off clashes against Servette but has failed to impress.

Protect your stumps. Play beside the line of the ball. Two nuggets of wisdom to succeed in England, from former greats Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar, to Jason Holder’s West Indies, before the first Test against England in Southampton. The visitors won the previous leg of the Wisden Trophy at home in 2019, but they have struggled in England, having failed to win a Test series in the country since 1988. They have managed only six Test wins during this period.Batting remains West Indies’ weakness. Holder and head coach Phil Simmons have underlined that as a big concern. In the rain-affected second intra-squad warm-up match in Manchester, none of the top-order batsmen even got a decent start. After the first-innings collapse in that match, Holder was embarrassed to admit some of his batsmen needed to “look in the mirror”.In the absence of Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer, West Indies will look at the pair of Kraigg Brathwaite and Shai Hope to lead the batting department. They were the standout performers for West Indies on their 2017 tour, as the visitors clinched a rare Test win in the country at Headingly on the back of their heroics. However, both batsmen have struggled since. In terms of average, since their tour of England in 2017, Holder has been West Indies’ best batsman.Lack of application and focus, and absence of partnerships, have been outlined as the major issues with the batting by Simmons. Lara, meanwhile, said that batting remained the “key” to West Indies’ fortunes.”The key to any team taking the field, especially if they are taking the field after batting, is the amount of runs they have to play with,” Lara told Tendulkar in a chat on the . “This present West Indies team need the luxury of having runs on the board. They need their batsmen to come up trumps and give them that sort of comfort. So the effectiveness of a Kemar Roach or Shannon Gabriel will only come into play if they don’t have to go on the defensive because of the lack of runs. That has been our problem for many, many years.”According to Lara, quickly understanding the conditions, playing late, and dominating bowlers selectively were some of the cues West Indies batsmen needed to understand. When pressed by Tendulkar, who asked: “In short, your message to West Indian team is try and stay beside the line, don’t get behind the line too much?”, Lara agreed.”In England it is protect your stumps. And get acclimatised quickly, get the pace and bounce of the pitch, know what the bowlers are doing. And then when you feel comfortable then you sort of grow. You don’t necessarily have to dominate every single bowler that is bowling to you – if you get to 70-80 and there’s somebody that is giving you trouble, back off. That’s key.”When Tendulkar joked that West Indies ought to take Lara “seriously”, the former West Indies captain cited the example of Tendulkar’s masterful 241 in 2004 in Sydney where he abstained from playing the cover drive, a shot that had got him into trouble throughout the series. To cut out what hurts you, Lara said, was the “key” to batting.”You know that Sachin, as well. In terms of that great innings that you played in Sydney: it was not about a particular bowler getting you out, but it was a particular shot getting you out. And you stopped yourself from playing it and you were able to score in other areas. So it is similar sort of approach – be it your technique and may be having a problem with a particular shot or a particular bowler.A good example would be Australia. Playing against Australia, I will be 70-80 or may a 140 and [Glenn] McGrath comes back for a spell. And I know he is going to bowl 36 balls or six overs, seven overs, I don’t need to sort of take any great risks. Give your other guy at the other end, give him the opportunity to score.”Summing up the chat, Tendulkar said: “You just have to be smart.”Lara nodded, “Yes, that’s all”.
