Mitchell Claydon misses Sussex's Blast defeat after hand-sanitiser ball-tampering ban

The ECB have confirmed that Mitchell Claydon, the Sussex seamer, missed Thursday’s T20 Blast quarter-final defeat against Lancashire due to a nine-match suspension for ball-tampering after applying hand sanitiser to the ball.Claydon, the veteran Australian who joined the club from Kent last winter, admitted a charge relating to altering the condition of the ball after being pulled up in a Bob Willis Trophy match against Middlesex, in which he took three first-innings wickets.Sussex initially suspended him for six games across formats, releasing a short statement at the start of September ahead of their Bob Willis Trophy fixture against Surrey, before he returned to the side for the final two matches of the Blast group stage. He was left out of the side for the quarter-final on Thursday after initially being named in a 16-man squad – his replacement, Will Beer, batted at No. 8 and was not used with the ball – and the ECB announced after the game that he had been made unavailable for selection.A Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) panel met on Wednesday to discuss Claydon’s sanction. He was charged with a breach of two ECB directives which said that his conduct should be regarded as “unfair and improper” and “prejudicial to the interests of cricket and likely to bring the game into disrepute”.The CDC panel took into account the six-game suspension that Sussex had already imposed, and suspended him for a further three matches, including the Blast quarter-final. He will now miss the first two games of the 2021 season.Sussex will also face a CDC hearing panel after being charged in relation to the incident, which could see them docked points for the 2021 season.

Jayawardene says fast bowlers have 'bigger role' to play even as IPL pitches get slower

“As long as they are making contributions, it doesn’t matter what kind of surfaces we play on”

Vishal Dikshit15-Oct-2020

Mahela Jayawardene said it was Rohit Sharma’s idea to replace Lasith Malinga with James Pattinson•BCCI

Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene says his fast bowlers still have a “bigger role” to play in the IPL even if some pitches have showed signs of slowing down in the UAE. Mumbai will think about changing their bowling attack to bring in a spinner for one of their quicker bowlers only when the conditions will require them to, Jayawardene said. With fast bowlers from others teams too – as was shown by Jofra Archer, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Norte on Wednesday night – picking wickets and troubling batsmen consistently, and Mumbai’s own trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult and James Pattinson excelling with their combined wickets tally of 31, Jayawardene says he is “happy” with their current combination.”We need to see how it (the conditions) will evolve,” Jayawardene said a day before their clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday. “Last year as well we made that adjustment at the back-end of the tournament when we played in certain pitches (in Delhi and Chennai) that were suited for spinners. I cannot say that right now because still the fast bowlers have a bigger role to play in this competition, whether it’s in the powerplay, middle overs or back-end.”As long as they (fast bowlers) are making contributions, they are penetrating the oppositions’ batting line-up, it doesn’t matter what kind of surfaces we play on because the quality of the fast bowling that we have is always going to create opportunities. If the conditions suits, then yes, we will look into that but right now we’re happy with the combination that we have.”Mumbai were second on the points table before Thursday’s game with five wins out of seven games, and their performances so far have come down to almost all of their batsmen firing, and their fast bowlers’ ability to adapt quickly to conditions that aren’t tailor-made for them. Jayawardene said they were a “little wobbly” in the first few games but he is pleased with their consistency since the Super Over finish against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, to win four games in a row.One of the surprise packages for Mumbai has been Pattinson, who is playing his maiden IPL and has picked nine wickets from seven games with an economy rate of 8.25. While the pace attack is led by the more experienced campaigners Bumrah and Boult, Mumbai were forced to fill the big void of Lasith Malinga, who opted out of the IPL for personal reasons. Jayawardene revealed it was captain Rohit Sharma’s idea to bring in Pattinson as the replacement, who could create wicket-taking opportunities for them in the opening and middle overs.ALSO READ: How James Pattinson is turning the heat on from ‘back-seat role'”I have to be honest, there were quite a few names that we discussed [to replace Malinga] but Rohit was the one who put his hand up and said Patto will be someone who will definitely add value to the attack,” Jayawardene said. “What he brings is pace, accuracy, bowls the hard ball and has that wicket-taking ability which we always look at. I know he was replacing Mali who is a death overs specialist but the requirement for us was always going to be tough to replace a like-to-like match for Lasith.”How to compensate that is by try and get someone who is going to create opportunities up front and in the middle by picking up wickets. So that’s where Jimmy’s name came up. So that was the path we took and he hasn’t let us down from the day he arrived – the way he trained, the way he understood the role we wanted him to do in the team and he adapted really, really well. He has formed a very good partnership with Boulty and Boom, and these few guys have been really, really good. So far it’s been brilliant. As a result, Mumbai are the only team so far to have used only 12 players from their squad, bringing in Ishan Kishan at No. 4 for Saurabh Tiwary, who picked a niggle after their first two games. With “very good” players like Chris Lynn, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Mitchell McClenaghan still on the bench, Jayawardene said it not only created a healthy rivalry in the dressing room but also gave them the option to pick players for very specific conditions and oppositions, apart from bringing in changes to manage players’ workload.”It makes a healthy rivalry within the group, we monitor everyone’s attitude and focus, whether they’re actually prepared for each and every game,” Jayawardene explained. “Depending on that we might make certain changes, if we feel they’re not physically capable or whether they are mentally fresh, then we make those rotations and make sure we manage the workloads. So that’s the reason we’ve got a lot of good players on the bench ready to go at any given time.”For now, the coach is satisfied with their 12 points that have given them an early advantage in the playoffs race as “the tournament will always get tougher and tougher at the back-end.”

Leicester could sign "outstanding" Vardy heir as first Potter signing

Leicester City will hope that they can consolidate themselves as a Premier League club again from next season onwards after the disaster of slipping down to the Championship was immediately rectified by going back up as second-tier champions.

Enzo Maresca is now gone from the Foxes hot seat after being the mastermind from the dug-out that steered the East Midlands side back up to the top flight, but that doesn't have to completely disorientate the newly promoted team, especially if Graham Potter walks in as the Italian's successor soon.

Named as the frontrunner for the King Power Stadium vacancy, the former Chelsea manager could well fancy the task of managing the Foxes, especially if recent developments surrounding a transfer embargo being lifted turn out to be true.

This could see a transfer spree occur off the back of the positive news, with a new striker potentially following Potter into the building.

Potter's first potential signing at the King Power

According to a report from Italian outlet GialloRossi.net last month, Leicester City hold an interest in AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham this summer, with a new development potentially piquing the interest of the Foxes even further.

Indeed, journalist Matt Law, writing for the Telegraph, further speculated about interest coming from the Premier League for the ex-Chelsea centre-forward earlier this week, with the likes of Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa all queueing up for his services, as his Serie A employers place a reasonable £20m price-tag above his head.

What Abraham could offer Leicester

It could be a risky capture by the newly promoted outfit, however, owing to Abraham only completing eight league games last season across an injury-ravaged campaign, but it could well be a signing that shows Leicester mean business after taking the Championship by storm to return to the top-flight.

Potter would also love the new addition of the 26-year-old striker to strengthen the Leicester ranks, if both faces do end up joining the East Midlands side, with Abdul Fatawu a potential teammate he could cause havoc with up-front.

Fatawu – who looks to be edging closer to a permanent switch to Leicester – could explode into life in the Premier League operating from an inside forward position next to Abraham.

He bagged seven goals in the Championship whilst on loan, with three of those coming in just one game against Southampton back in April.

Thus, the thought of the winger playing alongside a prolific striker – of which Leicester will need once 20-goal Jamie Vardy eventually departs – is a tantalising one indeed.

He could be a perfect Vardy heir when the seasoned striker hangs up his boots, alongside being a major upgrade on the likes of Patson Daka waiting in the wings as a reserve option to lead the line.

Abraham would give Potter another option he can use in his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation if he was to take over the reins at the King Power, with the lofty 6 foot 4 presence playing up top in this formation last time out when donning a Roma strip under Daniele De Rossi.

Abraham will aim to prove he's a Premier League calibre striker for the Foxes if a move comes to fruition, only finding himself 16 goals shy of Iheanacho's haul at the level already, and will act as his replacement if signed with the ex-Manchester City striker now allowed to leave for nothing.

He certainly showed himself to be a goal machine in Serie A, with 17 goals managed in his debut season when relocating. Writer Henry Winter even described him as being "outstanding" performing in Italy.

Abraham would be a superb signing but combining him with Potter would be of great benefit to Leicester, particularly when you consider he helped to make Brighton a distinguished top-flight outfit as boss.

Potter could find his next Dunk by reviving Leicester's £50k-p/w gem

Graham Potter could get even more out of this defender if appointed as Leicester City boss.

Liverpool player ratings vs RB Leipzig: Darwin Nunez has lift-off! Striker & Caoimhin Kelleher come up clutch as Reds maintain 100% Champions League record

GOAL rates all the Reds on show at the Red Bull Arena as Arne Slot's side showcased their invaluable strength in depth

Liverpool’s perfect record in this season’s Champions League remains intact, even if their performance in Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over RB Leipzig was far from flawless. The Reds started and finished the game at the Red Bull Arena poorly but got the job done thanks to two players who probably wouldn’t have been used had everyone been fit.

Darwin Nunez, standing in for Diogo Jota in attack, proved unusually decisive, scoring the game’s only goal when he arrived into the six-yard box to tap in Mohamed Salah’s downward header, while Caoimhin Kelleher once again showed why he’s considered the best No.2 in world football by making a couple of crucial late saves that first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker would have been very proud of.

Below, GOAL rates all of the Reds on show in Germany as Liverpool leaned on their impressive resilience and strength in depth to make it 11 wins from 12 games in all competitions so far this season ahead of Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash with Arsenal at the Emirates…

Getty Goalkeeper & Defence

Caoimhin Kelleher (7.5/10):

Got away with making a mess of an early attempted clearance but made a couple of decent stops from well-struck drives in the first half before essentially earning Liverpool the win with a couple of great saves in the final quarter.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (6.5/10):

No issues from a defensive perspective and, as usual, caused problems with his passing. It was Trent's cross-field ball to Gakpo that led to Liverpool breaking the deadlock. Far from his most influential display, though.

Ibrahima Konate (6.5/10):

Hadn't been remotely troubled before losing the ball in a horribly dangerous area and was lucky to be bailed out by Kelleher.

Virgil van Dijk (7.5/10):

His usual commanding self and very nearly scored from a Tsimikas corner.

Kostas Tsimikas (7/10):

A couple of loose passes from the Greek here and there but his crossing was a constant threat. No surprise to see him effectively create the opener with a great ball for Salah.

AdvertisementGettyMidfield

Ryan Gravenberch (7.5/10):

Yet another impressive showing from the Dutchman, who really does look like the real deal as a defensive midfielder. Work rate is excellent and is great on the ball, with this wonderful ability to just glide past opponents.

Alexis Mac Allister (7/10):

Inexplicably booked for diving after being bundled over in midfield but grew into the game and struck the bar with a fine curling effort from the edge of the area after a sublime one-two with Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboslzai (7.5/10):

Still doing so much of the dirty work for his team but also showed his quality going forward, linking superbly with first Gakpo and then Mac Allister to create two big chances.

AFPAttack

Mohamed Salah (6/10):

Registered an assist with the goal-bound header that Nunez poked home but was pretty quiet overall. Indeed, he was the least ineffective of the front three by some distance, so Slot was right to replace him midway through the second half – no doubt with one eye on Sunday.

Darwin Nunez (7.5/10):

Started up front in the absence of the injured Jota and led the line very well, proving a real pain in the neck for Leipzig's defenders. Deserved his goal and probably should have had a penalty too.

Cody Gakpo (7.5/10):

Retained his spot on the left wing ahead of Luis Diaz and was once again a real livewire in his preferred position. Flashed an effort wide after a terrific run into the centre and also saw an instinctive, close-range effort blocked by Peter Gulacsi.

GettySubs & Manager

Luis Diaz (6/10):

Came on for Salah just after the hour mark but made little impact aside from one late strike that was easily saved.

Curtis Jones (N/A):

Replaced Nunez as Slot sought greater solidity in midfield with Liverpool losing control of the game late on.

Andy Robertson (N/A):

Took over at left-back from Tsimikas for the final 15 minutes of normal time.

Joe Gomez (N/A):

As against Arsenal, the versatile defender was brought on in place of Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool looked to shut up shop.

Arne Slot (7/10):

It was by no means pretty but Slot will be delighted with his side, who are developing a nice habit of managing to win without playing well. He'll also be thrilled by the performance of Nunez up front, particularly if Jota won't be ready to return up top against Arsenal.

Celtic scouting "skilled offensive" star who could be McGregor 2.0

Celtic could look to bolster their playing squad over the next couple of months after the summer transfer window officially opened for business recently.

The Hoops won the domestic double during the 2023/24 campaign – lifting the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup – but still want to strengthen Brendan Rodgers' options across the park.

Celtic have been credited with interest in Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers, Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden, and Dundee star Luke McCowan, among others this summer.

Along with players who could come in and make an immediate impact in the first-team, the Premiership champions could add more young talent to the group.

Celtic's interest in teenage starlet

According to FD, as relayed by Football Scotland, the Scottish giants are keeping tabs on 18-year-old central midfielder Pontus Dahbo ahead of a possible swoop for his services.

The report claims that Rodgers has sent Celtic scouts to watch the Hacken star in action this season, as the Bhoys view him as a potential future star for the club.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

It states that the Swedish outfit are set to demand a fee within the region of £3.4m for their talented academy graduate, who has done enough on the pitch to attract interest from the Hoops.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Premiership side are prepared to pay that fee or if they will wait to pursue him in a future window.

If they can strike a deal for his services, though, then they could land the future heir to Callum McGregor's role in Rodgers' midfield set-up at Parkhead.

Why Pontus Dahbo could be Callum McGregor 2.0

The 18-year-old is not a player who the Hoops would sign and expect to come in and immediately be a huge upgrade to their existing first-team squad.

He is in the early stages of his playing career and would arrive at Parkhead as a long-term project and, potentially, as someone who could go back out on loan to gain valuable experience.

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

As a left-footed central midfielder who likes to retain possession at an impressive rate whilst making an impact at the top end of the pitch,

Dahbo could develop into Rodgers' next version of McGregor.

As you can see in the table above, the teenage talent showcased his talent in and out of possession in the Swedish top-flight during the 2023 campaign.

Like McGregor, Dahbo completes his passes, in general and in the opposition's half, at a high rate and has the quality to chip in with goals and assists, whilst remaining strong out of possession by winning the majority of his battles.

The 18-year-old gem, who was hailed as a "skilled offensive" player by scout Philipp Hollenhorst, has also completed 89% of his attempted passes in the Allsvenskan this year.

Imagine him & Kyogo: Celtic competing to land deal for "in-form" phenom

The Hoops are one of the teams keen on a deal for the impressive young winger.

ByDan Emery Jun 26, 2024

There is no guarantee that he would be able to translate that form over to the Premiership but the talented prospect still has plenty of years left to develop and grow and could be a fantastic long-term project for Rodgers to work on.

Najmul Hossain Shanto's fifty sets up Rajshahi's emphatic win

Minister Group Rajshahi made it two wins out of two with their six-wicket win over Gemcon Khulna. Their captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s burst in the powerplay, which saw him hitting his first half-century of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, clinched the game for Rajshahi.Shanto struck three sixes and six fours in his 34-ball 55, as he added 47 runs for the second wicket with Rony Talukdar, who struck a six and three fours in his 26. Shanto fell in the 11th over, lbw to legspinner Rishad Hossain, but Mohammad Ashraful and Fazle Mahmud took them towards the target, before Nurul Hasan got them home with 2.4 overs to spare.Rishad took two wickets while Al-Amin Hossain, who bowled just two overs, and Shahidul Islam took one wicket each.Khulna made 146 for 6 after a late boost of runs from Ariful Haque, the hero of their opening-day win over Fortune Barishal. Ariful slammed two sixes in the penultimate over, in which young pace bowler Mukidul Islam went for 17 runs after bowling three wide balls at the start of the over. Ariful and Shahidul Islam added 42 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket, which spruced up Khulna’s innings that was mostly lackluster.Opener Imrul Kayes was the first to go, caught at short fine-leg after mistiming a sweep off Mahedi Hasan. Shakib Al Hasan, too, got caught playing across the line against Mukidul, at deep square-leg in the fifth over. The Khulna innings unravelled further when Anamul Haque, having made 26 with three fours and a six, was run out in the eighth over. Jahurul Islam and captain Mahmudullah fell in the next two overs respectively, as they slipped to 51 for five in the tenth over. Young left-hander Shamim Hossain revived the innings somewhat, with a 25-ball 35 that had three fours and two sixes. He fell to Ebadot Hossain’s bouncer shortly after hitting his second six, leaving Ariful to play out the last 4.5 overs with the tail.
Gazi Group Chattogram blew Beximco Dhaka away by nine wickets, after bowling them out for a paltry 88. Chattogram reached the target in 10.5 overs, making it one of the biggest wins in Mirpur in terms of balls remaining. Chattogram’s big win will worry the rest of the field in a tournament where the five teams have very little room to make changes to their rosters.Chattogram’s decision to bowl first was vindicated when left-arm quick Shoriful Islam had his Under-19 teammate Tanzid Hasan in the second over, caught at slip with a fine away-going delivery. It followed an infuriating period for Sabbir Rahman, who struggled for nine balls before skying Shoriful in the covers for a duck. But Dhaka had worse luck when their captain Mushfiqur Rahim, uncharacteristically, gave Soumya an easy grab at slip after his attempted reverse-sweep, off the first ball he faced, went awry.Mohammad Naim and Akbar Ali provided a brief respite with their 44-run fourth wicket stand but Mosaddek Hossain bowled both of them in the space of three deliveries. Chattogram hardly gave them an inch afterwards, bowling them out for 88 in 16.2 overs.Apart from Shoriful and Mosaddek’s miserly figures, Mustafizur Rahman and Taijul Islam also took two wickets each while Nahidul Islam, who took the prized wicket of Mushfiqur, and Soumya Sarkar got one each.Soumya and Liton played a range of attractive strokes, including lofted straight drives and punches through cover. They reached 51 in the Powerplay, before taking them to 79, when Liton got out for 34. Soumya remained unbeaten on 44 off 29 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.
