Sharjeel Khan returns to Pakistan T20I side for tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe

Sharjeel Khan’s PSL form has been rewarded with a recall to the national side for the first time in over four years, as he was included in Pakistan’s T20I squad for the tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe next month.Sharjeel was the third-highest corer in this year’s curtailed PSL season, finishing only behind Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam, but at a fantastic strike rate of 170.94, well ahead of what the other two recorded. Sharjeel, playing for the Karachi Kings, was the only player to score a hundred in this edition, against the Islamabad United. The recall capped an eventful four years for the left-handed opener, who was out of the game altogether for two and a half of them, banned for his part in the 2017 PSL spot-fixing scandal. There have, however, been question marks about Sharjeel’s fitness. “Fitness isn’t the only criteria for selection – at the end of the day, a player has to play cricket. We are already working on reviewing the fitness testing levels and will introduce a new strategy [to gauge fitness],” Mohammad Wasim, Pakistan’s chief selector, said in a press conference. “I didn’t comment on Sharjeel’s fitness earlier as his performances [last year] were patchy, but now we have to look at anyone who performs, whatever the fitness they have.”Yes, I understand there is still a lot work that needs to be done on his fitness and he will improve with time, but at the moment he can win us big games with his bat.”The view on Sharjeel’s fitness marked something of a U-turn for the PCB. As recently as a year ago, PCB CEO Wasim Khan, not normally known for singling out players for criticism, had made an exception for Sharjeel, bemoaning his inability to remain fit while serving his ban, and said there was “a long way to go” before he could be considered for national selection. The other significant development was the absence of Yasir Shah from the Test side as he continued to nurse a left knee injury. The senior legspinner has been a regular in Pakistan’s Test squads for much of the past seven years, but has also experienced a form dip in recent times. The emergence of spinners like Sajid Khan, Zahid Mahmood and Nauman Ali – all included in the expanded Test squad – have also meant that Pakistan can afford to look beyond him. Shah’s performances in the southern hemisphere have been particularly underwhelming, with an average of 87 in that part of the world over the years.Shahnawaz Dhani, the Multan Sultans fast bowler who was something of a feel-good story during the PSL, was also called up for the Test series against Zimbabwe, with the chief selector saying that his performances during the tournament showed he could perform under pressure.Dhani took nine wickets in four PSL matches this season – the second-most among all bowlers, and while an economy rate of 10.33 needs work, there was enough for Mohammad Wasim to suggest he could be a white-ball prospect.”We basically saw him playing red-ball cricket in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and in the PSL he exhibited that he can handle the pressure,” the chief selector said. “He has the quality, the way he is bowling with control and pace… if we were playing Tests against South Africa, we would have reconsidered it, but we picked him because we are playing Zimbabwe.”Also, we are lacking fast bowlers in red-ball cricket. In white-ball cricket, we have more options than him. He is presently our future in red-ball cricket and we are trying make a pool and attract players in this format. He is definitely going to be considered for white-ball cricket in future.”Pakistan play three ODIs and four T20Is against South Africa before moving to Zimbabwe, where they are scheduled to play two Test matches and three T20Is.Test squad: Babar Azam (capt), Imran Butt, Abid Ali, Abdullah Shafique, Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam, Saud Shakeel, Agha Salman, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Tabish Khan, Hasan Ali, Shahnawaz Dhani, Nauman Ali, Zahid Mahmood, Sajid Khan.ODI squad: Babar Azam (capt), Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Abdullah Shafique, Haider Ali, Danish Aziz, Saud Shakeel, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Usman Qadir, Hasan Ali.T20I squad: Babar Azam (capt), Shadab Khan, Sharjeel Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Haider Ali, Danish Aziz, Asif Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk), Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Usman Qadir, Hasan Ali, Arshad Iqbal.

United's troubles this season are well-documented as Erik ten Hag led the Red Devils to just four wins in the first 14 games of the season scoring just 20 goals, with seven of those coming against League One side Barnsley. The Dutchman was fired last month and Ruud van Nistelrooy was appointed as interim boss, while the former forward was able to get his side to score goals, the Red Devils' top bosses want to refresh the squad's attacking options for new boss Amorim, and they are now monitoring the situation of two highly-rated forwards.

As per , Manchester United have earmarked Eintracht Frankfurt's Omar Marmoush and Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface for the winter transfer window, as the Red Devils want to hand Amorim the best possible squad to try and rescue United's poor start to the season. Both the forwards have long-standing contracts with their current clubs and Manchester United will have to pay through their pockets to try and sign them in January.

The report has suggested that Eintracht Frankfurt are likely to ask for a price tag close to €60 million (£50.1m/$63m) for Marmoush. Additionally, as Liverpool are likely to make their interest in Marmoush solid, United may have to pay more for the Egyptian if pulled into a bidding war by the Reds. As for Boniface, Bayer Leverkusen are said to value the Nigerian highly and could demand a hefty fee for a January sale.

The Red Devils are also said to be facing a few economic issues at the moment, and making big signings in January could be off the table for Amorim this winter. As such, it will be a game of wait and watch to understand what solutions United's top brass come up with if they are to sign either Marmoush or Boniface.

Move over Rutter: Leeds could land talisman who’d be perfect for Gnonto

With Georginio Rutter’s £40m move to Brighton edging ever closer to completion, Leeds United will have the mammoth task of trying to replace the 22-year-old before the end of the transfer window.

He may have taken his time to settle into life at Elland Road, but last season he was a crucial cog in Daniel Farke’s side that fell at the final hurdle, losing in the play-off final to Southampton.

The Frenchman registered six goals and 15 assists in his 45 Championship appearances during 2023/24 – ending the campaign as the club’s second-highest goal contributor Crysencio Summerville, who has also left the club during the off-season.

The aforementioned pair contributed to 49 of the 81 goals scored by the Whites in the Championship – highlighting the size of the task Farke has to replace such effective and clinical options.

As a result, he could raid his former club before the end of the window, signing one talent who has proven his goalscoring talent in recent times.

Leeds could land Championship star to replace Rutter

During the transfer window, Leeds have been linked with a plethora of attacking options to try and soften the blow of losing key players such as Summerville and now Rutter.

They’ve previously been linked with a move to sign Norwich City talisman Josh Sargent after his impressive form during the 2023/24 campaign.

Norwich striker Josh Sargent.

The USA forward featured in 26 league matches for the Canaries last time out, scoring 16 goals and registering two assists, helping his side reach the play-offs before the eventual defeat to Farke’s side.

It was previously claimed that it would take a bid over the £10m mark for Norwich to part ways with their star striker, with Leeds now having the funds for such a deal after the recent influx of big-money departures.

His excellent goalscoring record would undoubtedly reduce the loss of other attacking players, whilst also aiding one current star who’s plying his trade at Elland Road.

Why Sargent would be perfect for Gnonto at Leeds

With two weeks remaining in the transfer window, it’s not out of the question that Wilfried Gnonto will remain as a Leeds player, but he has the potential to supercharge their promotion hopes after the recent departures.

Whilst he never matched the figures produced by the likes of Summerville and Rutter, he still contributed with ten goal contributions, which included two goals and an assist in the 4-0 demolition of Swansea City.

Wilfried Gnonto

He would’ve undoubtedly registered more assists should the club have had a more clinical option at the top end of the pitch, with current forwards Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe missing a combined 17 big chances last season.

The “exceptional” Norwich man, as dubbed by teammate Ashley Barnes, was more clinical in front of goal last campaign, finishing with a conversion rate of 24% compared to the Leeds duo who could only muster 15% each.

Such figures would be perfect for Gnonto, who averaged 4.3 progressive passes per 90 whilst also completing 3.1 crosses per 90 – an example of the threat he can provide in the final third.

The Italian also managed 1.8 passes into the final third, alongside 1.5 successful take-ons per 90, proving he has all the ammunition needed to supply Sargent with the opportunity to further increase his already impressive goalscoring tally.

Whilst losing Rutter would be a huge blow for Farke’s side, it gives the club a great opportunity to invest in a similar talent to provide the goods in front of goal.

He’s cemented himself as a fan-favourite at Elland Road, but the pull of the Premier League is irresistible – with Sargent’s goalscoring talents having the ability to allow the supporters to forget about the departing Frenchman.

Bruno’s next Pogba: Man Utd want to sign £30m "one-man army"

Manchester United begin their competitive season on Saturday afternoon when they face their big rivals Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in the traditional season opener, the Community Shield. It is a repeat of the FA Cup final from last season, in which United ran out 2-1 victors thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Following their return to Wembley on Saturday at 3pm, the Red Devils’ first day of the Premier League season sees them host Fulham at Old Trafford. That fixture is the Friday night slot, meaning it is the first game of the English top-flight season, in which they will be hoping to get off to a winning start.

Manchester United players celebrate

United’s first away trip sees them travel down south to face Brighton and Hove Albion at the AMEX, before their final game before the September international break is a crunch clash against another huge rival, Liverpool, at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s side still need to add some depth to their squad, having signed two players so far this summer, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee. Recently, they have been linked with a midfielder who could add quality and depth to United’s squad ahead of next season.

Man United target Bundesliga midfielder

The player in question here is Borussia Monchengladbach and French midfielder Manu Kone. The 23-year-old, who is currently representing his nation at the Olympic Games, has impressed for Monchengladbach in recent times and has now been linked with a move away during the summer transfer window.

According to a report from Graeme Bailey, Kone is one of the names on a sizeable list of defensive midfielders currently being considered by United as they look to strengthen in the centre of the park. Bailey explains a potential deal for the midfielder has ‘been discussed internally’ at Old Trafford.

kouadio-manu-kone-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

Indeed, a deal certainly seems plausible for the young midfielder this summer. The report from Bailey states that Kone is ready to leave Monchengladbach this summer, and the club themselves are ready to part ways with him as well.

In terms of a price, the French Olympian could cost less than £30m this summer, and given the fact the club and the player want the move, it does not seem hard to get over the line. Bailey explains the Frenchman has ‘fans within the club’ at United, too.

Why Kone would be a good signing

Kone struggled with a couple of injuries last season and only played 22 times in the Bundesliga last term. However, he was still a key player when he was fit, and started 18 times out of those 22 appearances in total.

In terms of his profile, Kone is a tough-tackling, tenacious ball-winner who was described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig as a “one-man army” in the centre of the park. He excels in a double pivot and could be a perfect player to unlock Mainoo, United’s 19-year-old starlet in midfield.

kouadio-manu-kone-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

Given the Frenchman’s ability off the ball would certainly allow Mainoo to flourish in the second and third phases of the game. The 23-year-old is excellent out of possession, and averages 6.4 ball recoveries and 3.46 combined tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes, according to FBref.

Indeed, having that defensive security behind him would allow Mainoo to progress play forward and operate in the final third. The youngster flourishes when carrying the ball, and is superb at receiving possession off the back line and looking to carry through the opponent’s lines. He averages 2.70 attempted take-ons per game and completes 1.46 of them. According to FBref, that ranks him in the top 9% and 8% amongst midfielders respectively.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo

Having the security of the Monchengladbach midfielder in the pivot next to him, an athletic player who can cover lots of ground and win the ball back quickly and efficiently will certainly give Mainoo license to get forward more and affect the game in the final third.

Why Kone can be the next Pogba

Not only is Kone good out of possession, but he is also impressive on the ball too. In fact, he has previously been likened to former United midfielder Paul Pogba, such as in this instance by Marco Conterio. The journalist likened the pair, explaining Kone, like Pogba, is a ‘dribbler with great physique and long levers’.

Although his time at United split opinion, there is no doubt that Pogba was one of the most elegant players in the Premier League, who, when in full flow, was exemplary to watch. His ability on the ball was second to none, and he glided with the ball at his feet, dancing past opponents with ease. He regularly contributed to goals and assists, with 2018/19 being a particularly exceptional season.

The World Cup winner formed an exemplary partnership with United’s talismanic midfielder, captain Bruno Fernandes. The pair played 79 times with each other in the middle of the midfield for the Red Devils. They combined eight times for a goal, the third most the Portugal international has with a single teammate at Old Trafford.

Some of those goals included one in the 2020/21 Europa League semi-final against Roma and two on the opening day of the 2021/22 season, in which Fernandes scored a hat-trick, assisted twice by Pogba, a game where the Frenchman got four assists.

Should United bring Kone to the club this summer, they could well see a partnership form between the Frenchman and the captain, similar to the one we saw between Pogba and the former Sporting midfielder.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes

Given the 23-year-old’s ability on the ball, and his similarity to the 2013 Golden Boy winner when looking at his ball-carrying skills and technique, United fans could well expect to see a similar duo form.

For a fee of £30m at the most, this is a deal that United might not want to miss out on, given Kone’s profile, age and the fact he could unlock Mainoo and form a deadly partnership with Fernandes at Old Trafford.

Club back in for 29 y/o Rangers ace who "no defender likes to play against"

A European club have now reignited their interest in signing a Rangers ace who "no defender likes to play against", according to a new transfer claim.

Rangers transfer news

After the disappointment of drawing 0-0 at Hearts in their opening Scottish Premiership game of the season last weekend, the Gers picked up their first win of the campaign on Saturday afternoon. Philippe Clement's side battled their way to a 2-1 victory at home to Motherwell, with all the goals coming in the first half.

It has been such an exciting summer for Rangers in the transfer market, with so many new faces to bring in, and while ensuring they all gel together is hard, such reinforcements were needed to help close the gap on rivals Celtic. There could even be further additions to come, with fresh rumours continuing to emerge.

Chelsea youngster Leo Castledine is one rumoured target, with the 19-year-old midfielder potentially seen as an alternative option to Manchester United ace Hannibal Mejbri, who has also been touted as a summer signing.

There is also Rangers' possible pursuit of Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, who could be a gamechanger of a signing in terms of giving Clement a more potent attacking option than he currently has. Queens Park Rangers star Lyndon Dykes has also been linked, and could be a good choice alongside his Scotland teammate.

European club back in for Rangers ace

According to a new report from TuttoMercatoWeb (via Ibrox News), Cagliari are now back in for Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers this summer, reigniting their interest in the process.

They see the 29-year-old as an ideal replacement for Gianluca Lapadula, who could leave in the near future. The Gers have previously slapped a £4.2m price tag on Dessers' shoulders throughout the current transfer window.

Cyriel Dessers

It does feel as though Dessers is considered an expendable figure at Ibrox this summer, even though he has started both of his side's Scottish Premiership matches this season, scoring against Motherwell at the weekend and in their Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv.

However, Rangers' financial situation could be key in terms of whether they have the funds to bring in another striker to replace him.

The fact that the Gers appear to be pushing to get a deal for Shankland or Dykes over the line further suggests that he could be pushed further down the pecking order, even though Clement had said of the Nigerian in the past:

"If you compare him to seven months ago, he does much more for the team. Maybe people have a perception of him, but I know that no defenders like to play against him. He's only growing. That's what we want."

Fewer touches than Butland: Clement must now ditch Rangers' 16-pass star

The Light Blues won their first league match of the season

ByRoss Kilvington Aug 11, 2024

Dessers staying put at Rangers would certainly be no bad thing, with Clement's praise suggesting as much, and his tally of 23 goals in 56 appearances for the Scottish club is impressive. Squad depth is also important, and he would remain a good option off the substitutes' bench if a superior striker comes in, but whether he would be happy with that role remains to be seen.

Australians at IPL 2021 – the teams, the stats, and the form guide

Dan Christian (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

“Old blokes win stuff,” is Christian’s mantra, and he has become a T20 title machine. The BBL title with the Sydney Sixers was the ninth of his career, but he doesn’t have one from the IPL, where he returns after three years. Christian has turned himself into a superb finisher with the bat and there is a belief in some quarters that Australia should consider him again for their troublesome middle order. That seems unlikely now, but if he impresses at the IPL, the conversation will continue.Price tag INR 4.4 crore (approx A$850,000)

He had chipped in with bat and ball for the Karachi Kings at the PSL before the tournament was called off too.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (Mumbai Indians)

No longer in the frame for Australia selection and without a state contract, Coulter-Nile is heading towards a team-by-team T20 lifestyle in the latter stage of his career. Having been bought for A$1.63 million in the 2020 auction, he was released by champions Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2021 season after having claimed five wickets in seven games last season, But then he was bought back at a still-not-insignificant price.Price tag INR 5 crore (approx A$885,000)

The allrounder is back in the IPL after missing last season, this time with his fourth franchise. A strong middle-order hitter (another player who made use of the BBL Power Surge rule well) and a bowler who can still get it through at decent pace – although it’s certainly his second-string these days. Pat Cummins (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Among the premier fast bowlers of the current generation, after his record-breaking IPL deal in 2020, Cummins had a slow tournament with three wickets in ten matches before claiming nine in the last four, including a haul of 4 for 34 in the last group match, but it was enough for the Knight Riders to reach the playoffs.Price tag INR 15.5 crore (approx A$2,900,000)

Glenn Maxwell (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The curious world of the IPL! Maxwell was released by the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) after a poor 2020 tournament where he scored just 108 runs in 11 innings and did not hit a six, but was then bought for an even more eye-watering sum by the Royal Challengers, which sees him join forces with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Riley Meredith (Punjab Kings)

One of this season’s new faces in the IPL, Meredith is a bowler capable of high speed – an asset clearly in demand in the competition – although his price tag, as he become a millionaire, was still something of a surprise.Price tag INR 8 crore (approx A$1,400,000)

Jhye Richardson (Punjab Kings)

Like Meredith, this is Richardson’s first appearance in the IPL after an injury-disrupted couple of years, which began with a dislocated shoulder ahead of the 2019 World Cup. He came with some hectic bidding, which eventually went the way of the Punjab Kings. Capable of skiddy pace and late swing, he could be valuable in the powerplay.Price tag INR 14 crore (approx A$2,500,00)

Daniel Sams (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Sams was a late addition last season when he replaced Jason Roy at the Delhi Capitals, but they released him after three wicketless outings and he has been picked up by the Royal Challengers. He has enjoyed a batting revival of late with some powerful displays for the Sydney Thunder and Australia, although he probably remains a 50-50 shout to make the World Cup squad.Price tag INR 30 lakh (approx A$54,000)

Steven Smith (Delhi Capitals)

It has been a major pay cut for Smith after he was released by the Rajasthan Royals following a disappointing 2020 (311 runs at 25.91) and then bought by Ricky Ponting’s Capitals. David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Last season’s IPL was not as prolific as some for Warner (although 548 runs at 39.14 isn’t too shabby) and he has since had an injury-disrupted Australia season because of the groin strain he suffered against India. He has admitted he came back too soon for the Test series and would likely be feeling the effects of it for much of the year.Price tag INR 12.5 crore (approx A$2,300,000)

Sunderland submit new £5m offer for hugely in-demand "outstanding" talent

Sunderland are believed to have submitted a £5m offer for an "outstanding" player, as they look to strike a deal before the end of the transfer window.

Sunderland flying but transfers still on the agenda

It's fair to say that life under Regis Le Bris has got off to a fantastic start at the Stadium of Light, following a superb beginning to the Championship season.

Sunderland sit top of the table on maximum points after three matches, with seven goals scored and a trio of clean sheets also recorded at the same time. Last Saturday's 1-0 victory at home to much-fancied Burnley felt significant, showing that Le Bris' side can go toe-to-toe with the best teams in the division, as hope grows that a serious promotion bid is on the cards.

The Black Cats have suffered the blow of losing star man Jack Clarke to Ipswich Town, however, and they would be wise to use those funds to bring in new attacking signings before the summer transfer window closes. RB Salzburg forward Roko Simic has been linked with a move to the Championship leaders, with Sky Sports even claiming that talks are at an advanced stage.

Meanwhile, Caen attacker Alexandre Mendy has also emerged as a strong summer target for Sunderland in recent times, with a £2m offer lodged and the 30-year-old extremely keen on the idea of moving to the Stadium of Light, looking to get a transfer over the line.

Sunderland submit bid for "outstanding" player

Taking to X, journalist John Percy claimed that Sunderland have now bid £5m for the services of Leicester City attacker Tom Cannon, as they aim to bring him in before Friday's cutoff. Other Championship clubs are planning the same, though, with a big battle for his services looming this week.

Cannon could be a great option for Sunderland, having reached a point in his career where he is likely to want more regular football than he is currently getting at Leicester. The 21-year-old Englishman enjoyed an excellent spell on loan at Preston North End back in 2023, scoring eight goals in 21 appearances, and it led to former Hull City manager Liam Rosenior heaping praise on him.

Cannon's pedigree has been there for all to see since his youth team days at Everton, too, when he scored 51 goals in just 97 appearances for the Blues' Under-21s and Under-18s combined, showing what a prolific marksman he was.

Sunderland would be getting a player with a massive amount of potential whose best years are still to come, leading the line and providing the extra ammunition needed for the Black Cats to remain one of the Championship promotion favourites this season.
