Ipswich let youth star leave for £0, now he’s outperforming Hutchinson

Ipswich Town just about find themselves above the Premier League bottom three at this moment in time, but that could all change on Monday evening if Crystal Palace pick up three points away at Nottingham Forest, resulting in Oliver Glasner’s Eagles potentially leapfrogging the Tractor Boys.

There will need to be major improvements going forward as the magic of being in the top flight begins to wear thin for Ipswich, with back-to-back defeats to West Ham United and Everton unsettling the feel-good mood in Suffolk.

Kieran McKenna will especially want more from Omari Hutchinson, who cost £20m to get in through the door this summer but has offered very little since making the step up to the top division.

Hutchinson's numbers so far this season

Hutchinson’s flat form for the Tractor Boys is a far cry away from his Championship heroics, with the ex-Chelsea man thriving in the league below as an exciting loanee, notching up an impressive ten goals and six assists as automatic promotion was secured.

Now, his displays are passive in contrast as the once wild and energetic attacker looks frightened by the prospect of the Premier League, with just one paltry assist allied up this campaign from nine appearances in all competitions.

Of course, it is still early days and the Ipswich number 20 could suddenly burst into life, but the £20m price tag next to his name is starting to look slightly extortionate.

His showing against Everton last match did see him flirt with being back to his explosive best, with three key passes amassed and two shots registered on Jordan Pickford’s goal, but more will be needed from Hutchinson over the games to come to justify a starting spot week in week out.

Ipswich will be annoyed that they didn’t try to keep a firmer grip on one former youth player now, who could have added to the firepower of Liam Delap nicely if he was still on the books at Portman Road.

Marcelo Flores' time at Ipswich

Marcelo Flores would never go on to make the cut in Suffolk, poached by Arsenal at a very young age away from the Tractor Boys where his story all began.

The 5 foot 7 winger was in and around the youth set-up at Ipswich for three years but was allowed to leave for the Gunners in 2019 on a free transfer, a switch that will irritate those at Portman Road now when viewing what Flores has gone on to do in 2024.

Flores made a slight impression at the Emirates after arriving on a free transfer, with 15 goals registered playing on youth pitches in North London, but would never go on to leap up to the first team.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Still, there were outlandish comparisons in 2020 that even stated the Ontario-born attacker modelled his game on the likes of Eden Hazard and Phillippe Coutinho and he could well be the next iteration of those talents, after being included on the esteemed Next Generation list by the Guardian.

He has since made a name for himself playing for Tigres, where he has two goals and one assist next to his name from his last 13 games for the Mexican side.

Those numbers better Hutchinson’s current output for this season, with Ipswich potentially left to ponder whether they could have turned Flores into a first-team star if he didn’t up and move to Arsenal as a promising teenage talent.

Once hailed as “incredible” by Oviedo president Martínez Peláez when out on loan in Spain earlier in his career, Flores will hope he can keep those top performances coming for Tigres.

Back in England, Hutchinson will aim to reignite his own form as Ipswich pray that a first win in the Premier League comes imminently.

'I can complain!' – Andoni Iraola left stunned after Liverpool's Cody Gakpo wins penalty against Bournemouth despite confusion over whether he tripped himself up

Bouremouth boss Andoni Iraola has complained about the decision to award Liverpool a penalty after Lewis Cook was judged to have fouled Cody Gakpo.

Iraola was incensed that the Reds were given the opportunity to take the lead from the spot after it appeared there had been minimal contact from Cook on the Liverpool forward. Mohamed Salah, who scored both in the 2-0 win, put away the penalty and ensured the visitors won a crucial three points on the road. The Spanish coach was not alone in his criticism of the decision either, with a number of fans also bemused by the decision.

Speaking after the game, Iraola said: "They give this one – then I will complain for the other one [in a previous game] because it's even more clear. So, I can complain about the consistency of the decisions.

"The levels of the players we deserve to talk about them. I will try to speak about the players -they're the ones who deserve that. We were ready for this, but we needed to punish them and put them under more pressure."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Iraola's Bournemouth have impressed in recent weeks, picking up impressive victories over Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, to put themselves right amongst the contenders for Champions League qualification. The Cherries are seventh but just one point off fourth placed Manchester City, who travel to Arsenal tomorrow. Iraola will also be hopeful that fifth place would be enough for qualification as English club's European coefficient may provide an extra spot.

Peirson century and Steketee 10-wicket haul in vain as South Australia hold out

Half-centuries from Jake Carder and Alex Carey ensured South Australia survived

Alex Malcolm18-Oct-2021Jimmy Peirson produced his second century of the season and Mark Steketee claimed a career-best 10-wicket haul but Queensland fell four wickets short of a stunning come-from-behind victory at Adelaide Oval as South Australia held on in an enthralling draw.Jake Carder and Alex Carey produced fighting half-centuries, with Carey finishing 66 not out to hold off a desperate Bulls’ attack late on the final day.Queensland made a bold declaration after Peirson dashed to his second century of the season and his third in the past 12 months. He has made three centuries and four half-centuries in his last 12 Sheffield Shield innings, and averaged 59.63, to add his name to the list of wicketkeeper-batter candidates to replace Tim Paine in the Test side whenever the Australia captain retires.Peirson and Usman Khawaja continued their fine partnership sharing a 195-run stand. Both men played with aggression on the final morning to set up the declaration. Khawaja fell for 174 to a fine catch at midwicket while Peirson raced to 132 before holing out at deep midwicket with the lead at 323. Khawaja immediately declared giving South Australia two-and-a-half sessions and more than 80 overs to chase the target. The hosts lost Henry Hunt early with Carder and Nathan McSweeney put under extreme pressure as Steketee and Jack Wildermuth gave away just 10 runs in the first 10 overs. But the pair found their groove and put together an 88-run stand to give South Australia a platform with plenty of time remaining. However, McSweeney was incorrectly adjudged lbw off an inside edge on 32, giving Steketee his ninth wicket of the match. Carder pushed on, taking a liking to Queensland’s two spinners. He moved to 79 before making a mistake, spooning a return catch to Matt Kuhnemann. That brought Travis Head and Alex Carey together with 194 to win and more than 50 overs remaining. But Steketee snuffed out nearly all of South Australia’s hopes when he removed Head for the second time in the match to secure his first career 10-wicket haul. Head was caught at midwicket chipping a length ball off his pads.Carey kept the runs flowing but when Harry Neilsen holed at deep square for 13, South Australia shut up shop. Nathan McAndrew faced 30 balls before scoring and chewed up 66 in total to get to the second new ball. Queensland were frustrated by the pair and the umpires making several frivolous appeals an over, with Marnus Labuschagne particularly exasperated that none of the appeals off his bowling were upheld.Wildermuth knocked over McAndrew with a peach in his first over with the second new ball, but Carey and Daniel Worrall held out as shadows lengthened across the ground in 89th over of the innings.

Why Aston Villa have advantage in race for Bristol Rovers prodigy Kofi Shaw

Aston Villa are among a handful of teams that interested in signing a promising young star, according to a recent report. The Villans have made another impressive start to a campaign, but they will be disappointed to have thrown away three points on Sunday, as Ipswich Town came back to claim a 2-2 draw. But it continues an impressive start, and they will be looking to build on that as they prepare to face Bayern Munich and Manchester United this week.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Midlands side were very busy during the summer months, as Unai Emery was keen to put together a squad that is able to compete on multiple fronts. But despite the many comings and goings, it seems that the Premier League side are already putting plans in place for January, when the transfer window opens once again.

According to a recent report, Aston Villa are interested in a deal for Alex Baena, who plays for Villareal, a team that Emery used to manage. The 23-year-old broke into the first team during Emery’s reign, and he hasn’t looked back since, impressing a lot this season, so much so that Emery is keen to bring him to England.

As well as looking to sign Baena, Villa are also interested in signing Castello Lukeba from RB Leipzig in 2025. Real Madrid are also keen on signing the defender, but Monchi is positioning Villa ahead of the Spanish giants in a deal that could cost £60 million. And while Villa look at potential deals for first team additions like Baena and Lukeba, they are also keeping an eye on a younger talent, who could be one for years to come.

Aston Villa tracking Kofi Shaw from Bristol Rovers

According to journalist Alan Nixon, relayed by Birmingham World, Aston Villa are among the teams keeping an eye on Kofi Shaw of Bristol Rovers. Shaw, who is only 17, has burst onto the scene for the Gas this season, featuring a handful of times for them in various competitions.

The right winger’s performances have caught the attention of teams from higher up the football pyramid, with Leeds United and Southampton also keen on the player, as well as Villa, who will have an advantage due to NSWE’s previous dealings with his club.

Villa already have a relationship with Rovers, as they sent Lino Sousa to the Memorial Stadium in the summer, and while they may keep their eye on his development, they could also be taking in performances of Shaw in the coming weeks and months. Villa also sent Lamare Bogarde to Rovers to develop and he recently played in the club’s opening Champions League game against Young Boys.

Bristol Rovers boss Matt Taylor spoke last month about Shaw and stated that they are still aware of his age and taking their time with him. Taylor said: “We are still conscious that he is still only 17, so you do have to manage him a little bit, and he’s running as hard as he possibly can. Now we want to keep him in and around the first team.”

Leeds ace who left under Bielsa is now being compared to a £100m hero

It’s rare you get many managers who completely change football for the better. Leeds United and Elland Road have had one of the greats in Marcelo Bielsa, a coach who has inspired perhaps the greatest we’ve ever seen in Pep Guardiola.

Coincidentally, it does seem to be within the English game that these revolutionary managers rear their heads. Of the last few decades, think Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, think Jose Mourinho, think Jurgen Klopp. Yeah, the Premier League has been a pretty special place.

Former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.

All of them have their intricacies but Bielsa – despite his trophy record saying otherwise – should stand proud as one of the most iconic managers we’ve seen on these shores.

He was a lovely bloke, let’s be honest, but some of his methods were bizarre. Naming the entire starting XI in your press conference? Yep, Bielsa did that. Ordering his team to concede a goal against Aston Villa? The former Leeds boss did that too.

Marcelo Bielsa

It was a hell of a ride, wasn’t it? It may have ended in the Argentine’s sacking from his position in West Yorkshire but that promotion will never be forgotten. At long, long last, Leeds were finally dining at the top table again.

He’s also made some pretty fine careers for those he tutored…

Leeds' best players under Marcelo Bielsa

Perhaps Bielsa’s finest achievement at Leeds, promotion aside, was the rise of Kalvin Phillips.

The Leeds-born midfielder was an unsuspecting young prospect at the time, a player who no doubt had hopes of reaching England’s top flight but would probably be condemned to the Championship.

Kalvin Phillips

Well, the Argentine coach put his faith in Phillips and turned him into one of the second-tiers best players.

Under Bielsa, the now 28-year-old made 131 appearances, scoring five times and registering eight assists. He was all-action, he was imperious, he was a fan favourite and that was largely thanks to Bielsa.

Whatever you think of Phillips now, prior to his move to Manchester City he was one of the most impressive holding midfielders in England, dominating in the centre of the park en route to the Euro 2020 final with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.

There have been some others, though. Raphinha – who scored a famous hat-trick against Bayern Munich in the Champions League a few days ago – had a period of time with Bielsa, while the likes of Pablo Hernandez and Mateusz Klich must be celebrated too. Players such as Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas deserve their flowers too.

Raphinha

But, there were some who perhaps left too early. Leeds lodged three unsuccessful bids for Ben White and as such, he only enjoyed one season under Bielsa.

Jack Clarke arguably left a bit too early too.

Jack Clarke's story after leaving Leeds

Shine in the Championship as a young individual and a Premier League move will come calling. Leeds found that out with three players this summer; Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray all moving on.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Yet, back in the summer of 2019, it was Clarke who was earning his big move to the Premier League. Like Gray, he headed off to Spurs but this time the fee was smaller, joining in a £10m deal.

Since then, the young winger’s career has been a case of trial and error. The 23-year-old never made the grade at Tottenham, featuring for the first team on just four occasions before Sunderland snapped him up.

It was in the North East where Clarke made a name for himself with some devastating performances for the Black Cats.

He scored 28 goals and supplied 23 assists before, like a host of Leeds players a few months ago, was poached by one of England’s top clubs.

The York-born forward is now at Ipswich following a £15m move and despite not hitting the ground running in thrilling fashion, has delivered some impressive displays.

Clarke has just the one Premier League goal involvement to his name at the moment, supplying Liam Delap’s opening goal against Aston Villa prior to the international break, but it was a piece of play that drew a remarkable comparison from Sky Sports’ Alan Smith.

Looking at the young attacker’s slicked-back hair, low socks and mazy dribbling ability, Smith remarked that he “has a bit of Grealish about him.” Fine praise indeed considering the England star’s lofty £100m valuation.

The way he assisted that goal was certainly Grealish-esque, keeping hold of the ball in a tight space, manoeuvring it in a similar way at the byline before cutting the ball back. The pre-assist for that goal? Well, it came from Phillips – funny how football works out, isn’t it?

At the age of just 23, there is much more to come from Clarke and we can’t wait to see how he performs at Ipswich throughout the rest of the season.

9 passes all game: Slot must ditch Liverpool star after 5/10 display

All told, Liverpool will be satisfied with their point claimed against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, not least because their Premier League title rivals secured a lead on two occasions yesterday evening.

Last season, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were a day late and a dollar short in north London, outfought and outthought in February in what seemed a critical juncture in the enthralling three-horse race.

On that day, the error-strewn Reds failed to match their opponent’s gusto and assurance, with Ibrahima Konate sent off late on. The Frenchman was colossal this time around, winning all of his duels and being hailed for his “world-class” performance by analyst Raj Chohan.

Mohamed Salah was also absent for that one, playing at AFCON with Egpyt, but his appearance against Mikel Arteta’s side proved all the difference for Arne Slot and his booming project, who remain four points above the Gunners.

Mohamed Salah saves Liverpool again

Once Darwin Nunez had made that slick run, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deliciously weighted pass carving the Arsenal backline open, you just knew that Salah was going to find the space to bypass David Raya in the box.

Mohamed Salah scores for Liverpool

And he did. The 32-year-old’s neat finish marked his eighth goal of the season across all competitions – with seven assists besides. He’s been a marvel under his Dutch boss and is supercharging the Anfield side’s budding title charge.

Described as “unstoppable again” by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Salah’s positioning and intelligence bore dividends in a hostile Emirates environment, with his relentless proving to make amends after a shocking blunder when presented with a goalscoring chance only 15 minutes into the clash.

Arsenal were dangerous and sought to use their crowd to their advantage, but with the likes of Salah pulling the strings for Slot, there’s every chance that the Merseysiders can continue their stunning start to the season and challenge Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Not everyone was at their best, however, with Luis Diaz sure to thank his opposite-flanking peer after an indifferent effort that saw him marshalled by Thomas Partey, who was moonlighting at right-back.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Time for Luiz Diaz to be dropped

Diaz has been excellent for Liverpool this season – scoring five times – and let’s not forget that it was the Colombian’s neat flick-on from a corner that allowed Liverpool to beat the hosts at their own game and score from a corner, courtesy of hulking skipper Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

But that wasn’t enough to save the 27-year-old from criticism, with This Is Anfield only affording him a 5/10 match rating after an indifferent showing that led to comments regarding his lack of impact and success on Liverpool’s attacking left flank.

As you will see below, it was a display that failed to capture Diaz’s finest essence, hooked just after an hour having been well marshalled by the makeshift Partey, who impressively won 13 duels and five tackles.

He left something to be desired to be sure – completing just nine passes all evening and dismally completing just one of his four dribble attempts. A tally of just six duel wins from 19 contests also doesn’t paint a pretty picture of the former Porto winger’s time in north London this weekend.

That said, Diaz is still one of the Premier League’s finest wide forwards and showcased his worth with a match-defining contribution in the first half

Gakpo was impressive off the bench, however, winning three of his four duels, and must now be unleashed from the outset again after proving that his current form demands a starting berth.

WBBL round-up: Mooney plunders century, Gardner helps Sixers to third

Ash Gardner returned to form with a half-century•Getty Images

Ellyse Perry fell just short of a birthday half-century but it mattered little as Sydney Sixers powered their way to a 31-run WBBL victory over the Hobart Hurricanes at the WACA Ground.Perry, who turned 31 on Wednesday, continued her strong form with the bat by posting 47 off 52 balls, while player-of-the-match Ashleigh Gardner recorded her highest score of the season to lead the Sixers to 4 for 141.In reply, the Hurricanes were restricted to 7-110, with opener Rachel Priest (27 off 29 balls) and Molly Strano (22no off 16 balls) the only two batters to get going. Sixers star Nicole Bolton snared 2 for 28 with the ball and also took a spectacular diving catch to remove Priest. Maitlan Brown was crucial with 2 for 15 off her four overs. The Sixers’ fourth win of the season moves them into equal second spot on the ladder, while Hurricanes have now lost three on the trot and have just two wins from nine games. The day started splendidly for Hobart after they snared the prized scalp of Sixers star Alyssa Healy for one in the first over. Gardner and Perry struggled to get into the groove early as the Sixers crawled to 1-5 after three overs. Perry in particular found the going tough, posting just 3 off her first 12 balls. But she and Gardner soon flourished, with the pair combining for a 103-run stand that helped set up a competitive total. Bolton (18 not out off nine balls) added the late fireworks.

Talks about a potential tour of Pakistan by the Sri Lankan women’s team later this month have hit a stumbling block following a change in management at the PCB. As a result, the series will not be taking place in October but both boards are working to find a window for it before the 2022 ODI World Cup.Earlier this week, the SLC had seemed confident of the tour going ahead, with three ODIs and a practice game all but rubber-stamped. It would have been Sri Lanka’s first taste of international cricket since the T20 World Cup in February-March last year.Related

However, PCB sources said they were finding it tough to arrange the matches on such short notice given the administrative changes the board is currently undergoing. It is also understood that some of the Pakistan players were unavailable for an assignment in October.SLC, for their part, are hopeful of the tour going ahead sometime before the World Cup, which is scheduled for March-April next year.”These were ongoing discussions, but with the change in management, it seems that they’re finding it difficult to find a window for us,” SLC CEO Ashley De Silva told ESPNcricinfo. “We’re hopeful of doing it before the World Cup. If everything goes well, we will see if we can fit in before then.”The next scheduled assignment for both teams is the ODI World Cup global qualifier starting November 21 in Zimbabwe.
