South Africa look to re-focus against favourite opponents

Sri Lanka’s batting is a concern, having already come apart at the hands of Shamsi, Maharaj and even Markram

Andrew Fidel Fernando29-Oct-2021Big pictureOver the past week, South Africa have had much more to confront than their opponents on the cricket field. If you haven’t followed closely, here’s a quick recap.Ahead of the first match against Australia last Saturday, South Africa’s players chose different gestures through which to express their support for anti-racism, some kneeling with a raised fist (incl. Rassie van der Dussen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi), some raising a fist while standing (incl. Dwayne Pretorius, Aiden Markram, David Miller), and others simply standing to attention (incl. Anrich Nortje, and Heinrich Klaasen). But although CSA had allowed their players to show their support for the global movement in these three ways, they had decided on the morning of the next match – against West Indies – that everyone must kneel, in order to avoid the appearance of disunity.Quinton de Kock, who seems to have been taken aback by the suddenness of the kneeling mandate (it was only conveyed to the players on the day of the game), chose not to be available for the match. Days later, though, he issued an emotional press statement, apologising for any hurt he may have caused through his withdrawal, stating that he was ready to kneel, and that he has always opposed racism, even if he did not always agree with making such gestures. The good news for South Africa, hopefully, is that they can now put the issue behind them. Difficult conversations have been had. Captain Temba Bavuma, who has always been adamant that the door remained open for de Kock, can now have South Africa’s best batter in his XI. They will hope that the events of the past few days, and that their confronting of their differences, will make the team stronger. They will breathe easier too, that their next opponent is a side they have dominated over the past two years. South Africa whitewashed Sri Lanka in a three-match T20 series in September. In fact they’ve won the last six T20Is against Sri Lanka, and for the majority of that time have seemed by far the better team. In a reversal of much of these teams’ cricketing history, Sri Lanka have struggled substantially against South Africa’s spinners. Against the left-arm wristspin of Shamsi, yes, but also against the left-arm fingerspin of Maharaj, and even the gentle offbreaks of Markram, who took four wickets in six overs in that September series. Less than 48 hours before this match, they had also stumbled against the legspin of Adam Zampa.Sri Lanka’s quicks had a bad outing against Australia too, but where the attack has largely been good over the past few months, the batting has only sporadically clicked, and this remains their area of greatest concern. Even if the top order delivers a good start, as was the case on Thursday, there has been a tendency to lose their way against high-quality spin through the middle overs. That captain Dasun Shanaka is yet to make a substantial score this tournament is also a worry.Dasun Shanaka is yet to fire in the T20 World Cup•Sri Lanka CricketForm guide (completed matches, most recent first)South Africa WLWWW
Sri Lanka LWWWW
In the spotlightWhatever baggage he brings to this match, Quinton de Kock also brings a good record against Sri Lanka from that September series in which he was highest scorer. Across those three matches, he struck 153 runs and was dismissed only once – a performance for which he was named Player of the Series. That was largely against the same attack he is likely to face on Saturday too (only Lahiru Kumara was missing), and you suspect that nothing would please de Kock and his team more than for him to get runs, and put the week’s controversy behind him, to the extent that such a thing is possible.Dasun Shanaka has drawn acclaim for his leadership (Sri Lanka have arguably already overperformed in this World Cup, relative to expectations), but his own batting has been poor. In domestic cricket, Shanaka is a T20 gun. He finished atop the run charts by a distance in a recent SLC T20 league. But in internationals, his top-score as captain (from 11 innings) is 27 not out. What’s worse, though he’s in the team as a finisher, he has struck at a paltry 102.68 since taking the reins. Lately, Sri Lanka have even taken to promoting Wanindu Hasaranga up the order ahead of him. But if they are to make a deep run in this tournamemnt, they desperately need Shanaka to produce the kinds of innings they see from him in domestic cricket.Pitch and conditionsSharjah’s tracks tend to be on the slower side. Though, there is also the chance – depending on the exact strip that will be used – that the ground will be strongly asymmetric again, which is not a situation spinners enjoy. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 30s celsius range.Team newsMaheesh Theekshana was deemed fit enough to play against Australia, but he did need attention on his side strain during the match. Since there is less than 48 hours between the two games, perhaps Sri Lanka will be tempted to rest him, especially if the strain is likely to impact his performance. Lahiru Kumara was taken apart by the Australia top order, so while Sri Lanka may be tempted to leave him out for left-armer Binura Fernando, they will probably persist with Kumara.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Pathum Nissanka, 2 Kusal Perera (wk), 3 Charith Asalanka, 4 Avishka Fernando, 5 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 6 Dasun Shanaka (capt.), 7 Chamika Karunaratne, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Dushmantha Chameera, 10 Maheesh Theekshana/Akila Dananjaya, 11 Lahiru KumaraWith de Kock returning, Reeza Hendricks will probably drop back down to No. 3. Heinrich Klaasen is likeliest to make way.South Africa (possible): 1 Temba Bavuma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk) 3 Reeza Hendricks, 4 Aiden Markam, 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 David Miller, 7 Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiStats and trivia South Africa have won two World Cup matches (in 2012, and 2016) to the one they have lost (2014) against Sri Lanka. After 50 T20I innings, Shanaka’s overall strike rate is 106.26. He has hit only two fifties.Shamsi, the top-ranked T20I bowler in the world, has taken 29 wickets and maintained an economy rate of 5.81 this year. Wanindu Hasaranga, the world No. 2, has arguably been better however, taking one fewer wicket in two fewer outings, with an economy of 5.52.Quotes”I don’t think there’s a weakness against spin. There’s only a problem with the option we take in certain situations. In the previous match we lost four wickets in a short space of time and that made it hard. If we control spin a bit more and figure out when we take the boundary options, that would be better.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo's comments reignited debates over whether his relentless pursuit of personal records overshadows his team contributions. Critics have often portrayed him as ego-driven, pointing to his visible frustration on the pitch when things do not go his way.

  • WHAT FERDINAND SAID

However, Ferdinand was quick to dismiss those accusations, arguing that Ronaldo’s mentality is what makes him a once-in-a-lifetime player.
"People need to understand sometimes – they look at him and think that he is the highest-paid, a good-looking guy – he is going to be selfish, etc. They are far from the truth," he said in an interview with

"He is a man who wants to be remembered forever. He has done nothing short of greatness. He has rejigged the record books in so many different categories within the game – physically, he has taken it to another planet, another stratosphere. What he is achieving, what he is doing, his age, his consistency over so many years. He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. He has got more money than God. He has won more trophies than most. He has the most goals. He still wants to get up and see himself looking for that extra one per cent to be the best. He is just different. He is made different."

Fewer touches than Vicario: Ange must drop 4/10 Spurs dud after Palace

This has been an incredibly topsy-turvy season for Tottenham so far and that showed no sign of changing against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

A week ago, Spurs had demolished out-of-form West Ham 4-1. They did go a goal down but Ange Postecoglou’s side responded in emphatic fashion.

The Lilywhites went and beat AZ Alkmaar in midweek too so arrived at Selhurst Park full of confidence. Alas, that does not always result in a win, particularly if you are of a Tottenham persuasion.

They were distinctly average against the Eagles this weekend, losing 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Even though there was a debut for Mikey Moore – perhaps their biggest positive of the weekend – the young 17-year-old could not inspire them to victory.

Tottenham's worst performers against Palace

Moore was handed his first Premier League start of his career on Sunday afternoon but despite being compared to Neymar in midweek by James Maddison, did not take his chance on this occasion.

He was replaced just after the hour mark having failed to register a single key pass or complete any of his three dribbles.

Dejan Kulusevski also wasn’t at the races, a rarity this season for such a strong chance creator. This time around, he was substituted early as well after a game in which he lacked much inspiration in the final third.

The Swede had just one shot and could only provide one key pass during the clash but arguably wasn’t the main culprit. That goes Micky van de Ven’s way.

The Dutchman has starred at times this term – notably supplying that wonderful assist at Old Trafford but this time he put his team in all sorts of danger, giving the ball away that led to Mateta’s goal.

While he will likely his place, colleague Maddison should be put back on the bench.

James Maddison's performance in numbers

Like Spurs’ season, this has been a topsy-turvy week for the former Leicester midfielder. Maddison was withdrawn at half-time in the 4-1 win over West Ham last week.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The score was 1-1 at the time before the Lilywhites went on to score three goals without him on the field.

There was a show of faith in the England international in the Europa League in midweek as Postecoglou gave him the captain’s armband. He certainly led by example, selflessly handing a penalty to Richarlison rather than taking it himself.

However, he certainly didn’t lead by example too much at Selhurst Park this weekend. Alongside Kulusevski and Moore, Maddison was withdrawn on 62 minutes and he did so having had a pretty poor game truth be told.

The Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick handed the playmaker a 4/10 rating, writing that he ‘struggled to influence the game, as was ‘outshone by his England rival Eberechi Eze.’

Eze – who supplied the assist for the game’s only goal – did register the same number of key passes as Maddison (1) but he was ultimately better in most facets of the game.

The 27-year-old proved why he’s been snubbed by Lee Carsley in the latest two England squads, having 48 touches of the ball, four fewer than Guglielmo Vicario in the Spurs net and ceding possession 12 times.

It was wasteful, lacked creativity and showed why he cannot be trusted to start every game. Spurs scored three without him on the pitch last weekend and should consider attempting to go without him again next time out.

Levy wasted £21m on Spurs flop who was just a "poor man's Soldado"

Spurs have wasted a lot of money on forwards over the years, but this striker might have been the most disappointing of the lot.

USMNT star Christian Pulisic shows off AC Milan’s fourth kit in collaboration with Off-White and PUMA

The American and several other Rossoneri stars modelled the bold new kit that blends high fashion with football heritage

    WHAT HAPPENED

AC Milan has revealed their new fourth kit for the 2025 season, officially named the “Dreamland” kit. The design, displayed by USMNT star Christian Pulisic and other players, is a result of a collaboration between the club, PUMA, and luxury streetwear brand Off-White, marking Off-White’s first venture into on-field football wear.

The kit’s design, inspired by Pan-African colors pays homage to the influence of Black culture on football and fashion. The kit also has the number “63” inside the collar which references both AC Milan’s first European Cup victory in 1963 and Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech as per the club.

“This collaboration represents a milestone for AC Milan, bringing together football, fashion, and values in a way that is both bold and meaningful. Partnering with Off-White on their first-ever playing kit alongside PUMA allows us to create something truly unique, perfectly aligning with AC Milan’s legacy and vision for the future and celebrating the partnership with Off-White™, Maikel Oettle, chief commercial officer of AC Milan, said. “Building on the success of our Fourth Kit strategy with PUMA, this project reaffirms our dedication to pushing creative boundaries and connecting with fans in innovative ways. We are proud to celebrate this cultural moment and bring the transformative power of dreams to life on and off the pitch.”

Arsenal can forget Gyokeres & Havertz by signing "the best 9 in the world"

The last month or so has put a serious dent in Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have dropped points in three consecutive league games and now find themselves seven points and five places adrift of leaders Liverpool.

Worse yet, the Gunners look porous at the back, and utterly ineffective in attack, which has led some fans to demand the club look for a new striker in 2025, with names like Viktor Gyokeres at the top of a lot of fan’s wishlists.

However, there is another sensationally gifted centre-forward the North Londoners could target instead, an experienced international who could spell trouble for Kai Havertz’s place in the team and was actually linked with the club this summer alongside the Sporting CP ace.

Why Arsenal might want Gyokeres

So, the name on everyone’s lips at the moment is, of course, Gyokeres, who has been in scintillating form for Sporting and showed the world just how effective he can be in the Portuguese side’s spectacular win over Manchester City in the Champions League last night.

Viktor Gyokeres vs Manchester City

The Swedish superstar played like a man possessed against Pep Guardiola’s juggernaut, and thanks to two penalties and a brilliantly taken goal to level the score in the first half, came away with a European hat-trick against one of the best teams in the competition.

It was a potentially career-defining display for the former Coventry City star, but it probably shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise as, since moving to Lisbon, the 26-year-old has been a goalscoring machine.

For example, in 50 appearances last year, he scored a whopping 43 goals and provided 15 assists, meaning that the Stockholm-born phenom averaged 1.16 goal involvements every game.

This season has seen the 22-capped international somehow reach yet another level, scoring 23 goals and providing four assists in 17 appearances, equating to an average of 1.58 goal involvements per game, which is frankly absurd.

In all, Gyokeres looks like he could already be one of the best strikers in the world, but there is one issue, aside from the potential fee, that might prevent Arsenal from signing him: his lack of experience in a top-five league, which is not something that can be held against another forward the North Londoners could turn to.

The sensational striker Arsenal could sign instead

The striker Arsenal could turn to in place of Gyokeres and to challenge or replace Havertz next year is Inter Milan’s leading man, Lautaro Martinez.

Inter Milan'sLautaroMartinezcelebrates scoring their second goal

The Gunners were linked with a £94m move for the Argentine during the summer, and even though he has since signed a new deal with the Italian giants, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be available for the right price.

With that said, how does the World Cup winner, who renowned football podcaster Angelo Valdes described as “the best 9 in the world,” compare to the Gunners’ number 29? Would he be a clear upgrade worth splashing the cash on?

In short, yes, he would, as while Valdes’ claim might be slightly hyperbolic, it isn’t too far off the mark.

In 295 appearances for the Nerazzurri, the 27-year-old has scored 135 goals and provided 47 assists, which equates to a goal involvement on average every 1.62 games over six years.

Moreover, if we compare his form to Havertz’s from last season, there remains very little comparison regarding whom the better goalscorer is.

For example, in his 66 appearances for the club since his £65m move, the former Chelsea star has scored 21 goals and provided eight assists, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.27 games.

In contrast, the former Racing Club Gem has scored 33 goals and provided 11 assists in just 57 appearances, which breaks down to a goal involvement on average every 1.29 games.

Ultimately, while Havertz remains a valuable member of Arsenal’s team, his raw output falls significantly below Martinez’s, and with Gyokeres having never played in a top-five league, signing the Argentine in 2025 appears to be the best option for the Gunners.

Manchester United's problems continue to pile up, with the Red Devils travelling by road rather than rail for their next Premier League clash against Tottenham. Signalling problems saw services either delayed or cancelled on Saturday and forced Amorim's men to scrap plans to take a train down to the capital and to jump onto a coach instead. The journey takes almost twice as long by coach – almost four hours – disrupting the club's preparation plans either further.

Sunday's match sees two underperforming teams meet with both desperate for three points. United were beaten by Crystal Palace last time out in the Premier League and have won just eight of their 24 matches so far in the English top flight. Amorim is also having to cope with a growing injury crisis, with Amad Diallo now expected to miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. The winger, who has been one of the few bright spots in United's dismal season, joins Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer on the sidelines.

Wade, Stoinis tee off at the close to put Australia in final

Second night in a row, second tournament favourites – Pakistan this time – paid the price for conservative batting in the first innings and were consumed by the curse of the defence. They looked in much more control than England did in Abu Dhabi, with Australia needing 62 off the last five with just five wickets in hand. They had two batters, who had barely batted in the tournament, but Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis got the better of possibly the best attack of the tournament with clean hitting.

It will be tempting to paint Hasan Ali, whose 18th over went for 15 and who dropped Wade in the 19th before he unfurled a hat-trick of sixes, as the villain, but the match was lost when Pakistan scored just 71 in the first 10 overs on arguably the best batting track Dubai has rolled out all tournament. They somehow got to 176 thanks to Fakhar Zaman’s 32-ball 55. Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan then kept Pakistan’s noses ahead – Shadab’s 4 for 26 are the best figures in a T20 World Cup semi-final – but Stoinis and Wade had the final say.Babar, Rizwan get stuckMohammad Rizwan was in the hospital till late Wednesday night, getting treated for flu-like illness. He cleared the fitness test on match day, and there was no way Pakistan were splitting a successful opening partnership. Asked to bat first, the questions for them was: do you go for a par score and ask your bowling to bail you out, or do you try to provide them some cushion?Rizwan attacked almost everything. His approach was clear the moment they saw what a belter the pitch was. Babar Azam, though, failed to help his partner out. Together they let Australia take out their fifth bowler’s quota for just 31 runs within the first 10 overs. Glenn Maxwell bowled an over to two right-hand batters with no boundary attempts. When Babar finally slogged Adam Zampa to be caught at long-on, Pakistan were 71 for 1, and had once again left themselves needing 120 off the last 10. At what is considered the best time to bat in T20s, Babar scored at 114.7 per 100 balls.No-balls help Pakistan outBackloading their best bowlers, Australia managed to put Rizwan and Zaman under immense pressure. Mitchell Starc conceded just three off the 13th. Zampa gave five in the 16th. Rizwan and Fakhar kept trying to hit, but nothing came off. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, though, ended up bowling two high full tosses which got deposited – with one of the free hits going for a six too. This was just the momentum Pakistan needed, reaching 158 for 2 in 18 overs.Cummins sucks momentum outCummins, though, bowled a superb 19th over, with slower ones into the pitch, conceding just three runs and also taking out Asif Ali. The template was set for Starc in the 20th over, which gave him Shoaib Malik’s wicket and also just a single to Zaman. However, Starc went back to attempting yorkers in the end and conceded two sixes.Boom boom AfridiFirst ball to a right-hand batter, and Afridi ripped off the front pad of Aaron Finch. It was plumb. Second ball to a right-hand batter, Mitch Marsh had his toe taken off, only to survive an lbw on an umpire’s call. Australia 1 for 1 in 1.Warner sets up the chaseGiven the kind of finish, it is easy to forget the man who set the chase up. David Warner was in sublime touch, hitting three sixes in his 30-ball 49, one of them an incredibly powerful hit off a ball almost rolling along the ground. He looked nothing like a batter who had just been left out by his IPL side, and Pakistan needed to get him out if they were hoping to compete.Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade were involved in a half-century stand•Getty Images

Shadab keeps Pakistan inShadab actually did nothing extraordinary. He bowled like he usually does. Good length, high pace, slight variations. Nor did the pitch do much for him. It is just that the batters kept attacking him, and they kept mis-hitting. Except for Warner, who walked when he thought he had nicked a slider that he actually hadn’t, Shadab had little agency over his other three wickets. Marsh and Steven Smith slogged him to deep catching fielders, and Maxwell switch-hit for the same result. By the time Shadab was done, Australia needed 74 off the last seven overs. The Stoinis-Wade finaleAustralia might have lost four extra wickets than Pakistan at this stage because of the risks they took, but they had 12 extra runs. Those 12 extra runs proved to be the difference in the end as Stoinis and Wade didn’t panic and finished the game off with one full over to spare, roughly worth 12 runs.It wasn’t Hasan’s night, though. With 62 required in five overs, he bowled a no-ball in the 16th over to give away 12. Then he went for 15 in the 18th, which can happen to any bowler when batters are swinging for the hills. In the 19th, 20 required off 10, Hasan over-ran a catch in the deep, possibly the first big error from Pakistan in the field. What should have been 20 off nine with one bowler in was now 18 off nine. Wade then unleashed his pace hitting, pouncing on the small errors Afridi made in length. Two of the sixes were ramps, using Afridi’s high pace to his advantage. Rauf ended up not bowling 25% of his quota because Hasan was given the 18th. That was not the first mistake Babar made on the night.

Forget Sane: Newcastle want "unplayable" £50m star who’s just like Perez

Newcastle United have made an indifferent start to the 2024/25 campaign. Eddie Howe’s side are eighth in the Premier League table, having racked up 12 points. They have won three games, drawn three and lost twice this term. With that being said, the Magpies have not won their last four games.

Arguably their most important player this season from a goal involvements point of view has been Harvey Barnes. The winger has three goals and one assist, more goal contributions than any other Magpies player. Star winger Anthony Gordon has just two goals to his name, and Alexander Isak has scored once.

With their biggest attacking threats struggling to fire, it is arguably no surprise that they are looking to add to the depth in attacking areas over the next few transfer windows.

Newcastle target Premier League winger

The player in question here is Bournemouth and Ghana international winger Antoine Semenyo. The 24-year-old has impressed for the Cherries over the past 18 months and has been linked with a move away from the South Coast side.

According to a report from Football Insider, the Magpies would have to pay between £40m and £50m to sign the winger and are showing keen interest in bringing him into the club next summer.

However, they would not be alone in the race for the Ghanian’s signature. Fellow Premier League sides Arsenal and Tottenham are also showing interest. Spurs have done business with the Cherries recently, having signed Dominic Solanke last summer.

Why Semenyo would be a good signing

The in-demand winger has been superb in the black and red stripes of Bournemouth. Last term, he impressed under Spaniard, Andoni Iraola, scoring eight goals and grabbing two assists in 33 games.

The attacker has carried that impressive form into this season. Semenyo already has three goals and one assist in eight top-flight games, as many as Newcastle’s leading scorer and creator, Barnes.

Not only would the forward add quality and depth to the Newcastle line-up, but he also brings great versatility for Howe to rely on. This term, Semenyo has played as a centre-forward, left-winger, right-winger and at right midfield.

From this point of view, he is certainly a handy player to have in the squad.

The former Bristol City winger, who cost the Cherries £10.5m, could prove to be an excellent alternative to Leroy Sane for the North Eastern outfit on that right flank.

They have been linked with the former Manchester City star on a free transfer, but face competition from La Liga giants Barcelona, and Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.

Comparisons between former Magpies attacker Ayoze Perez and the “unplayable” Semenyo, as football writer Ed Aarons described him, can also certainly be drawn.

The Spaniard, who now plays for Real Betis, was impressive during his time at St James’ Park. He scored 48 goals and grabbed 17 assists in 195 appearances in that famous black and white shirt.

When looking at their pair’s stats on FBref – who deem the two men to be similar players, among those in Europe’s top five leagues – from this season, there are certainly some similarities that stand out. Firstly, the pair are both notable ball carriers, with Semenyo are powerful dribbler, and Perez able to ride tackles well with his low centre of gravity.

The Bournemouth player averages 3.43 progressive carries per 90 minutes, compared to Perez’s 4.35 each game. They also complete a similar number of completed take-ons per game, with the Ghanaian averaging 1.79 compared to 1.52 for the Betis attacker.

From a creative point of view, the Bournemouth number 24 averages 1.04 key passes per game and 2.09 progressive passes. Comparatively, the Spaniard Perez plays 1.3 key passes and 4.35 progressive passes.

Should Newcastle bring Semenyo to the club next summer, it could be a very smart signing. The winger would add a lot of quality and versatility in attacking areas and could have a similar impact on the club to Perez, who was an effective performer as a Newcastle player.

For around £40m-£50m, it could be a superb piece of business for the Magpies, representing a perfect alternative to the more high profile talent of Sane.
