Clement can ditch Diomande by unleashing Rangers’ "impressive" star

Glasgow Rangers will be looking to carry on where they left off in the Premiership as they face a trip to Rugby Park this afternoon to play Kilmarnock.

A 2-0 win over St Johnstone during their last outing before the international break meant they had won their previous three league games; can the Light Blues make it four in a row today?

Philippe Clement won’t just be aiming for all three points, but also ensure his team deliver a solid performance in the bargain, scoring a few goals in the process.

Against the Saints, several players stood out, yet one failed to truly showcase their abilities – Mohamed Diomande.

Why Mohamed Diomande could be dropped by Clement

The promising midfielder played just the opening 45 minutes against the Saints a couple of weeks ago, coming off at halftime to be replaced with Connor Barron.

During the first half, he lost possession seven times while making zero tackles or interceptions in what was another poor display.

Indeed, the 22-year-old even received a match rating of just 4/10 by Glasgow World for his performance, and it could be time for Clement to drop the Ivorian to the bench against Killie.

With Nico Raskin shining in the same match, it looks like Barron will come back into the starting XI to partner the Belgian, thus seeing Diomande dropped to the bench.

The Rangers star who could replace Diomande

Since joining from Aberdeen, the young midfielder has played a part in every single match so far this term.

The clash against the Saints was just the second match he had not started for the Light Blues, but after Diomande’s lacklustre display, the Scot should be brought back into the team.

Hailed as “very impressive” by Scotland U21 manager Scott Gemmill, Barron has emerged as a key component in Clement’s midfield, showing maturity way beyond his tender years.

In the Premiership this campaign, Barron has succeeded with 91% of his passes, averaged 69.6 touches per game, made tackles and recovered 3.7 balls per game, showcasing his abilities at the heart of the midfield.

These attributes have made him an instant hit with the Ibrox faithful, especially considering they snapped him up for free during the summer.

There is no doubt that he will continue to get better and better as time goes on, especially with exposure to European football on a regular basis.

While he has formed a decent partnership with Diomande, it will be interesting to see him and Raskin slotting into the engine room against Killie.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The duo have the potential to shine and a solid showing from the pair could mean Diomande has to work even harder to get back into the starting XI.

Three points is all that matters at Rugby Park this afternoon, although a good performance could certainly boost morale among the supporters, no doubt about that.

Sky Sports: Man City keen to sign Gyokeres who may now leave for just £50m

Manchester City are interested in signing a “top” striker, and they could be able to secure a transfer with a 40% discount, according to a new report.

The Blues continued their strong start to the league season over the weekend as they beat Southampton 1-0, a result that now sees them sitting top of the Premier League table.

£400k-p/w Man City star De Bruyne negotiating Etihad exit after talks held

He’d be a huge loss for Guardiola…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 27, 2024 Man City news and updates

There was more delight for Pep Guardiola’s side during the week, as they got to celebrate the fact that their midfielder Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d’Or. The Spanish midfielder beat Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior to the award, as he played a key role in City’s 2023/24 success and helped Spain win Euro 2024, as he was named player of the tournament.

Guardiola heaped praise on his midfielder, stating it is “incredible news for him”. “Hopefully it can give him energy to recover well and to be with us next season again. We are going to play this season without the best player in the world.”

While City celebrate Rodri’s success, there could be bad news on the horizon, as star man Kevin de Bruyne has held talks with MLS side San Diego, according to a recent update. The Belgian international is said to prefer a move to the MLS over the Saudi Pro League as he begins to negotiate his exit from the Etihad.

Now, while he may not be a direct replacement, City seem to have their eyes on one player for next summer, and a deal could come cheaper than what many may have expected.

Man City "interested" in signing Viktor Gyokeres

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Manchester City are “interested” in signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. The Swedish international joined the Portuguese side back in July 2023 and has been an instant hit, scoring goals for fun as Sporting were crowned Champions last season.

Plettenberg states that despite Gyokeres having a release clause of €100 million, which is roughly £83 million, there is an agreement in place for him to leave for as little as €60 million (£50 million) next summer. That means were City to land the striker, they could get a 40% discount.

Gyokeres, who is described as being a “top striker” by Plettenberg, has already scored 12 goals in nine Liga Portugal games this season. That form in front of goal has gained him the attention of City, as well as Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea. This news comes after it was reported last week that City are looking to use their new director of football, Hugo Viana’s connections, as he currently works at the Portuguese club and is set to join City at the end of this season.

Gyokeres has experience in English football, as the forward played for Coventry City, Swansea City, and Brighton. It was with the Sky Blues where he really excelled, as he scored 21 goals in 46 Championship games in his final season, as Coventry reached the play-off final. If Man City manage to get a deal over the line, they would be adding one serious goal-scoring machine to another in the form of Haaland.

Mzansi Super League 2021 cancelled amid Covid-19 concerns

The 2021 edition of the Mzansi Super League (MSL), which was scheduled to be played in February 2022, has been cancelled owing to Covid-19 concerns in South Africa. A CSA statement said that the discovery of the new Omicron variant of Covid-19 has “made it difficult to maintain the brand proposition of being the premium international T20 tournament, due to increased travel restrictions as imposed by many nations on South Africa”.Pholetsi Moseki, CSA’s acting CEO, confirmed that the CSA T20 Challenge would be played instead of the MSL in that slot in February.”The decision to cancel the 2021 edition of the MSL is meant to allow CSA and its strategic partners to revamp and review the tournament post-Covid-19 to regain its market and commercial position,” Moseki said. “For its purposes, the MSL slot will again be replaced by a domestic CSA T20 Challenge, featuring the 8 (eight) Division 1 teams and this tournament will take place in February 2022.”Related

Chelsea must regret selling "sensational" star more than Hall & Livramento

Chelsea are renowned for having one of the very best academies in English football, developing some elite-level talents who either go on to impress in the first team or earn them a huge profit.

Mason Mount is a prime example of a player who has done both during his time at the club, making 195 appearances at Stamford Bridge, during his four years in the first-team.

He was part of the Champions League winning squad during the 2020/21 season under Thomas Tuchel, scoring twice in his 11 appearances during the competition.

However, he would depart his boyhood club in a £60m deal to join Manchester United last summer, a decision that was an unpopular one with the supporters.

Tammy Abraham is another star who featured in West London, making 82 appearances, scoring 30 times before leaving to gain more valuable first-team minutes elsewhere.

The striker would join Italian side Roma in a £34m deal back in 2021, an excellent deal for both parties considering he was mainly a backup option during his time at the Bridge.

Two other academy graduates have also left the club in recent times, going on to star in the Premier League after their transfers away from the club.

Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento’s stats since leaving Chelsea

Left-back Lewis Hall made his first-team emergence during the 2022/23 season, making 11 appearances in all competitions – appearing to be a long-term option in the full-back area.

However, his time with the Blues would be short-lived, joining Newcastle last summer on an initial loan with an obligation to buy for £35m, a move that has taken his professional career to the next level.

The 20-year-old has featured in 11 league outings for Eddie Howe so far this campaign, catching the eye of temporary England boss Lee Carsley, leading to a call-up during the ongoing international break.

He’s featured for 135 out of 180 minutes for his nation in the last outings, looking to be an outstanding option for his nation in a position that has caused so many issues over the years.

He’s not the only former Chelsea youngster to have recently made his England debut, with right-back Tino Livramento also rewarded for his excellent performances alongside Hall at St James’ Park.

The 22-year-old originally left the Blues for just £5m in the summer of 2022, joining Southampton before also moving to Newcastle last summer after the Saints’ relegation during the same campaign.

He started and played the entire 90 minutes in the recent win over Ireland, looking assured in the full-back role under Carsley.

However, despite the duo’s recent rise away from the club, there’s also another player who has impressed after his move away from Stamford Bridge.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

The player who Chelsea must regret selling

Attacker João Félix moved to Chelsea on a permanent basis this summer after previously spending the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan at the Bridge.

However, the deal saw midfielder Conor Gallagher end his 18-year association at the club, joining Atlético Madrid in a £38m deal, preventing them from losing on a free transfer next summer.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

The 24-year-old has already made 15 appearances for the Spanish side, scoring twice and becoming a regular under Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano.

As a result, the “sensational” talent, as dubbed by journalist John Cross, has featured in Carsley’s plans at international level, starting both matches this break – scoring his first England goal in the win over Ireland on Sunday night.

However, it’s his stats for Atletico that have caught the eye, winning 68% of the tackles he’s entered this campaign, whilst also winning 43 duels – an average of 6.5 per game.

Given his form away from his boyhood club, there must be an ounce of regret by the Blues in allowing such a talent to leave – with Gallagher still having the potential to play ahead of someone like Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia.

As far as Hall and Livramento are concerned, however, they would find it a struggle to break in ahead of Euro 2024 winner Marc Cucurella and club captain Reece James.

91 touches, 7/10 rating: The Celtic star who was even better than Johnston

Celtic maintained their place at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, on goal difference, with a 2-0 win over Dundee at Parkhead on Wednesday night.

The Hoops came into the game off the back of a 3-0 win over Motherwell in the top-flight on Sunday, and secured all three points yet again, with their ninth win in ten league games.

Alistair Johnston came off the bench to open the scoring for a much-changed Celtic XI, before Arne Engels doubled the team’s advantage from the penalty spot.

Brendan Rodgers elected to go with Anthony Ralston from the start but needed his first-choice right-back to come on to break the deadlock against Dundee.

Alistair Johnston's performance against Dundee

The Canada international came on for Ralston in the 57th minute of the match and played the last 33 minutes at Parkhead, scoring the opener in the 60th minute.

With one of his first touches of the ball, Johnston prodded his finish into the back of the net after Hyun-jun Yang’s ball into the box fell his way.

Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.

The former MLS star also created one ‘big chance’ for his teammates and completed 94% of his passes, which shows that he was reliable and creative in possession after coming on.

However, Johnston did lose all three of his ground duels and was dribbled past twice without making a single tackle or interception, suggesting that there was some rust on him from a defensive perspective.

Despite him coming on to open the scoring, there was one player who was even better than Rodgers against Dundee on Wednesday night – Engels.

Arne Engels' performance against Dundee

The Belgian whiz came back into the starting XI after being rested from the start against Motherwell last time out and showed Rodgers what he is all about.

Of course, he was directly involved in the second goal in multiple ways. The former Augsburg man played the through ball to send Kyogo Furuhashi into the box to be fouled, before stepping up to take the penalty and score to make it 2-0.

His involvement in the second goal for the Scottish giants was far from his only contribution to the game, though, as Engels put in a fantastic all-round display in the middle of the park.

As you can see in the table above, the Belgium international was involved in and out of possession and was effective in everything that he did.

The 21-year-old star, who was handed a player rating of 7/10 by 67HailHail, showcased his creativity, with four key passes, but also made three tackles without being dribbled past, as he made it difficult for opposition players to get the better of him.

Therefore, Engels was even better than Johnston as he showed his quality in and out of possession, whilst also playing the full 90 minutes and influencing the play throughout the entire game.

Tottenham worried £60m player could be out until 2025 with Wilson Odobert

Tottenham Hotspur officials are concerned that a “real force” in their squad could be missing until next year, alongside winger Wilson Odobert, who recently underwent surgery on his right hamstring.

Odobert tipped for lengthy absence after Spurs surgery

Spurs officially announced that Odobert had a successful procedure on his hamstring last weekend, with the £25 million winger signed from Burnley now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines as he begins his recovery.

The South Korea star’s future is a real talking point this week.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 20, 2024

Odobert has endured a pretty unlucky start to his Lilywhites career since making the move from Turf Moor, missing their last seven Premier League games with a combination of hamstring and thigh problems, and he’s managed just 272 minutes across all competitions as a result.

The Frenchman is now set to miss even more game time following his surgery, with ex-Spurs scout Bryan King predicting that he could be out until late February at the earliest.

“I can’t see him returning before the end of February,” said King to Tottenham News earlier this week.

“That is quite a serious operation that he has had. For someone to have it at this age, it is very hard on him, he was progressing quite well. Now he has had to undergo surgery which will leave him out for quite some time.”

Odobert’s absence, and manager Ange Postecoglou’s resulting selection headache, is compounded by mainstay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-game domestic ban, which will result in the Uruguay international missing an array of crucial Premier League games and their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Man United.

Bentancur isn’t eligible for a single domestic match until Boxing Day, but he is at least permitted to play European matches during his English ban.

On top of this, Postecoglou is also set to be without striker Richarlison, who has been sidelined with his own hamstring problem. The Brazil international’s struggles with injury have resulted in him missing 10 games across all competitions already this term, which is a crying shame for Richarlison after his decision to reject a move to Saudi Arabia in the summer and fight for his place at Spurs (ESPN).

Tottenham worried Richarlison will be out injured until next year

According to GiveMeSport, it gets worse for the £60 million forward. Those within Tottenham are worried that Richarlison will be out injured until next year, and that could significantly affect his market value, as chairman Daniel Levy ponders whether to cut his losses on the ex-Everton star.

Spurs are apparently hoping he makes a swift recovery and returns to form, so Richarlison can tempt interested parties into bidding. The 27-year-old enjoyed a terrific purple patch under Postecoglou midway through 2023/2024, and that kind of run would work wonders to secure him a move away in 2025.

“I’ve never thought in those terms because if you do, you box yourself in,” said Postecoglou on Richarlison last season.

“What I want is for Richy to keep improving, and keep developing his football and becoming a real force for us, and we’ll see where that takes us.”

Transfer expert drops Nottingham Forest update on links to Bayern Munich gem

Nottingham Forest have received an update on their pursuit of an “absolute jewel”, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey providing the latest information.

Nottingham Forest's superb start

Few would have predicted that Forest would be competing right at the very top of the Premier League table this season, but an impressive victory at Anfield and brilliant recent form means Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are faring extremely well after 11 games.

However, Nuno’s side may need to find an extra gear in the coming weeks, as their fixtures are set to get a lot trickier, with a difficult trip to the Emirates Stadium coming before the end of the month.

Chris Wood has been the star man for the Tricky Trees, in light of his fantastic form in front of goal, but Callum Hudson-Odoi has also been extremely impressive, averaging the highest SofaScore match rating in the squad in the Premier League.

As such, it is clear that Nuno is blessed with some fantastic attacking talent, but that hasn’t prevented Forest from being linked with other players, namely Bayern Munich winger Mathys Tel. Earlier this month, Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg made it clear that the 19-year-old was a player of interest to Nuno, saying:

However, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has now dropped a new update on the reported interest in the youngster in an interview with Nottingham Forest News, with the journalist saying:

“My understanding is there’s not much into that, that was played down to me on the Forest end. I think it’s more the players end trying to generate some interest.”

Nottingham Forest not interested in Tel

As such, it appears as though Forest are uninterested in signing Tel this winter, which may come as disappointing news to some fans, given that he put in some very impressive performances for Bayern in the Bundesliga last season.

Despite his age, the winger appeared in 30 of his side’s 34 Bundesliga games, during which time he managed to chime in with seven goals and five assists, while he has also made a total of 14 appearances in the Champions League.

Managing to secure the Frenchman’s signature on loan would be a real statement of intent for the Tricky Trees, particularly considering how highly he is rated by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who described him as an “absolute jewel”.

That said, Forest are faring well at the moment without Tel, and if Nuno continues to get the best out of his current group of players, then his side could go on to have a season beyond anyone’s expectations back in August.
